The Brilliance of Konstrakta's "In Corpore Sano"

  • I’m not gonna lie to you, when I first heard "In Corpore Sano" I was ready to pull out the “old man yelling at the clouds” side of my personality, because… yeah… she’s not singing. She’s talking. There’s barely any melody in this song. And the lyrics are… bizarre at first. It was giving me “weird girl trying to be weird to show just how weird and artsy she is and just how above Eurovision she is”. There is SOME of that, but the song and the performance actually have a very strong message, and unlike some songs, a cleverly hidden political statement.
    Chapters:
00:00 - Go Girl Give Us Everything (Intro)
    02:04 - Theme 1: Beauty Expectations
    05:17 - Theme 2: Lack of Gratitude
    06:40 - Theme 3: Health is a Privilege
    09:34 - Subverting Expectations
    12:48 - Art for Art's Sake
13:50 - idc we won (outro)

Thank you for explaining why this song is actually good. I think a lot of it gets lost in translation, most of us outside of Serbia wouldn't know that artists there are often not eligible for health insurance, that's insane!

      @sonjak8265 Před 8 dny

They are eligible but there must be some conditions.

The best part of the performance was the obsessive hand washing to the point that it was no longer being “healthy.” And the fact that we are so obsessed with being healthy (on the outside) that we often neglect our mental health (hence the sad soul in a healthy body). I didn’t realize that she was referring to healthy as being pretty so that just adds that extra sweet layer of symbolism that made me love this song for the 2022 year.
I also think she took the Megan Markle bit straight from a magazine which further highlights our cultures obsession with being “healthy” which actually is just being pretty. Which was genius of her to do as an opener considering how weirdly obsessed we all were with Megan before her world wide privacy tour lol 😂
Now every “health” video I watch I’m definitely going to look at it they mean healthy or pretty (looking at all of those what I eat in a day videos where they eat a small bowl of oatmeal with like three almonds lol).

I adore In Corpore Sano and Samo mi se spava equally, I find they both succeed at being avant-guarde in different ways, and Samo mi se spava just speaks to me more personally because I am more intimate with the themes it touches on than those of In Corpore Sano. Maybe I'm just too weirdness starved as a Swede to truly discern quality weirdness

And the fact that she has still one of the most iconic performance ever and that she is also a lot present during the 2023's Eurovisin season and is most of the time the moment of the night just show how she is a genius

I was deeply impressed with Konstrakta's whole performance, I clapped soooo hard! But I didn't know the meaning of lyrics, and boy, it's so powerful... Thank you for allowing me to look at this song from a different perspective and admire it even more!

I think the song also speaks to a corruption of sorts of the pursuit of health. The first verse talking to the conflation of beauty and health, obviously, but the second talking about how the pursuit of health can, itself, become almost neurotic. Particularly the part about walking the dog. Nowadays, you have to get your steps in, get enough fresh air. Fitbit on your wrist tracking how much you did, what your heartrate was, how many steps you took, how long you've been out, how many calories you've burned. But sometimes you just walk the dog, and that's it. It doesn't need to be more than that.
The visual performance does the same thing, with the background singers fulfilling the role of cult priests, as that is what the pursuit of health has practically become. A worship of health, of the pursuit of health. Violations of privacy, ethical quandaries getting skipped, U ime zdravlja, all in the name of health.
A curious pop song that'll always be remembered as 'the lady who washed her hands on stage', but Konstrakta painted a dystopian portrait of our society's corroded relationship with health. She's my winner for 2022, always will be, and it was one of the best Eurovision performances of all time.

Completely agree, absolutely loved this song and thank you for unpacking some of the nuances I miss by not speaking the language. I thought her just sitting centre stage for the whole performance was such a power move and by the end of it I was so hypnotised she could have made me do just about anything. Also I think by not stating her meaning behind the song she was allowing room for people to find their own meaning in her work and thus connect with it in their own way

    Love the Eurovision content! ❤
But I will forever defend Bojana’s 2015 entry. It was the surprise banger we didn’t know we needed until that live performance! 🎉🥰

Might as well leave a top level comment because I don't understand your dislike of Luke Black and I am a local music photographer who photographed both artists at their shows AND fixed the Latin for this particular song by accident, not even knowing what the lines were for.
    1. Both Luke and Konstrakta can sing. Konstrakta does not need to utilise her entire range for her work from, say, 2017-2018 on. Luke's singing on the ESC song sounds slightly helpless and deranged on purpose. They're both conceptual artists.
    2. Luke Black and Konstrakta performed this together last Saturday. I could not photograph AND film at the same time, but there will be a televised version of Luke's entire concert - an enormous filming crew was present in a cosy 800 people venue where I mostly photograph. We're going through a turbulent time politics-wise and the show was hours before faked, set up elections.
    3. At the said concert Luke stated that this it was his dream to perform solo at the said iconic venue ("Amerikana" of the Youth Centre of Belgrade) from the time Konstrakta's band Zemlja gruva held a mini-festival there and he was featured. They know and support each other as artists.

I always listen to all the songs before knowing their countries or artists. Makes things more objective to me!
I loved the winner and only later the war happened, or at least I didn't know it was from Ukraine before I already thought it was the winner.
I always hate comparing! I'm Dutch and my favorite ever Dutch entry lost to Conchita! Still think it's awesome she won!
Serbia had an absolute amazing performance that will definitely stand out in Eurovision history! Even though I couldn't understand a word the message did come through! ❤️
Glad voting helps and she got so high, well deserved! Was really rooting for her that year! ❤️

Yeah, How the hell were the lyrics juvenile?! It's literally about people having their heads in the sand as the world falls apart - it's basically a COVID depression song? Also he sings fine. I honestly think he just doesn't like the video game imagery.

    • @RustlingRagazza
      @RustlingRagazza Před 5 měsíci +6

@@MadameChristie His song and the book "My Year of Rest and Relaxation", neither of which are juvenile, made me realise that I spent most of the pandemic sedating myself to sleep and not realising that it made me feel worse. I'm nine years his senior and he's older than what he looks like. Nothing juvenile about that. Glad we agree.

Well before hating this much at 1:26 u should analyse his movements and lyrics too….it has also very strong meaning and point, and performance is amazing and he can sing amazing..his song demons and gypsy are vocally strong songs but this one has better concept

Why would you say that "jury was changed so Luke Black can win", when that's the regular procedure that was also done in 2022, when also jury was changed between semis and final???
Also talking about ignoring world issues is very much NOT a juvenile topic, and you can see that very clearly in the state of the world we have today and how the big serious adults are "dealing" with issues like climate change, inequality, poverty, inflation etc

at last someone pointed out obvious. biti biti biti (with hand gestures Konstrakta makes) have clear double meaning, to be and to must be by force, healthy). the only weekness of this song is a problem to understand all subtle meanings unless native serbian speakers. even the way she pronounce words has the meaning

If you think Luke Black can't sing you aparently didn't listen to any of his other songs. Also it is ironic that you say that for Luke and then you are full of praise for Konstrakta who barely ever sings.

1:23 what does "jury was changed to have him win" mean 💀 Pesma za Evroviziju and Beovizija always had a different set of jurors for the semi-finals compared to the final
He can sing, he can perform, the lyrics are deep and meaningful, you're just kind of a hater
