Politically and economically, Vietnam stands to gain from closer ties with the US. As President Biden continues to de-risk from China, American businesses are shifting their operations and manufacturing from China to Vietnam. And the U.S was the one who brought the war to the country, the entire of Vietnam never wanted this war, both North and South didn't wanted this. The reason why the North have to go to battle is because they know the U.S was trying to turn the South into a puppet, take a look at the Middle East countries, they're still at war because the U.S influenced them. I don't think Vietnam is like a communist country as the media propaganda says they are more open and free than China. Vietnam is very interesting, how can they compete with 3 superpowers: America - China - Russia? It seems that history has proven that in Vietnam they only have one independent nationalism, not capitalism or communism. Vietnam is a country that has experienced the most wars in the world and has been under a long-term embargo, but they have transformed strongly from a poor country into an emerging industrial country. it comes from hard work

Us Americans don't deserve such a warm and forgiving Vietnamese public for the horrors of the 60s and 70s of the US. It genuinely brings a tear to my eye how many veterans from both sides can understand the level of trauma that they had faced in the past, but it's beautiful how Vietnam has been so accepting of US Veterans trying to do what they can now as retirees and survivors to help the people they were ordered to destroy, and had many of their friends killed by the NVA.
I hope us Americans can honestly keep up with the graciousness the Vietnamese have shown us, when they have every right to despise us. Hopefully we can supercharge Vietnam's development by giving them the tools to be honest and respected competitors in their respective markets. That would be the biggest win-win scenario imo, since it shows that a cooperative and rules based world economy is not a zero-sum game but one that is mutually beneficial.
Hoping for the best for you, Vietnam :)
P.S. those Vietnamese EVs really look like solidly designed and well made vehicles, something I cannot say about the Chinese exports to Europe. Since Japanese manufacturers are MIA from the EV market, and mid-range crossovers being the most commonly sought after family vehicle in the US, it will give Kia and Hyundai a run for their money, as the US is focusing on EV SUVs and trucks. My dad passed what must have been a prototype here in San Francisco and he just kept going back to how nicely the car was designed, not too futuristic, not too traditional, unique in its design from other companies, and when I told him about the brown leather seats that they say are a possible optional upgrade... he may be buying a vinfast to replace his tesla model 3 from '18 since the battery is starting to wear down after 140k miles.

Everyone says Vietnam is the beneficiary, but if businesses investing in Vietnam do not benefit, they certainly will not invest in Vietnam.
People often assume that businesses invest in Vietnam because of low labor costs without evaluating other factors such as:
    - Vietnam is a country that has free trade agreements with many countries in the Americas, Asia, and Europe (CPTPP, RCREP, EVFTA...). Production in Vietnam will be almost tax-free when importing raw materials and will not be subject to export taxes to countries with free trade agreements.
    - Vietnamese students are always one of the leading countries in the Olympiad exams of Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Informatics... or Pisa. Young population, large market, high skills, can produce products from agriculture, shoes, clothes, to mobile phones or electric cars... and without much training costs create.
    - Goods produced in Vietnam only take a maximum of 8 hours for the goods to move to the port. Electricity and service costs are cheaper than other countries
    - Vietnam has a culture similar to China, workers are hard-working, do not pray, do not protest... thus ensuring high working intensity in a continuous production environment
    - Vietnam is one of the countries that uses the largest renewable energy in Southeast Asia, ensuring the high standards that Europe is aiming for (Lego factory in Vietnam uses regenerative energy)
    - In addition to the government incentives offered to investors, provincial governors also offer additional incentives to compete with each other to attract investment.

Well , might be true in some cases among the younger people, how ever, the economic relations between China & Vietnam are close to the point that both countries have to move in the same direction in terms of Vietnam developing its infrastructures more closely link to China as the borders of both countries are next to each other. At this point , Vietnam is dependent on China’s prowess for its technology in infrastructures , telecommunications & networks. The economic might of China alone would create the spinoffs for Vietnam’s economy as well. The U.S. may try to upstage China for greater influence on Vietnam’s economic development but the political and post Vietnam war situations may prove to be a tougher hindrance in reality. Today, the U.S. is not the only source of chip technology or a generator of other investments while China has that capacity to provide similar investment & technology opportunities for Vietnam, but Vietnam’s economy itself must be at a stage to meet such challenges.!

@TienNguyen - I think you're over simplifying the Vietnamese's attitude towards Communism as if it's meaningless. The fact is while all of the economic and global experts scream for VN in the 2000s to focus on expanding economic zone in Dong Nai, VN was insistent on getting FDI in different provinces, many are "rural". This balanced growth allows rural province to join in on the growth while not overburden metropolitan areas. Vietnamese have access to good basic health care, good education in rural province which fuels educated and skilled young workers. These are not traditional free market thinking. Same thing with how VN coped with Covid. It has underlying Communist/Socialist belief that everyone make sacrifices to benefit the country. Look at the West and how we mucked it up and ended up killing hundreds of thousands of people needlessly. All of this has underlying Communist/Socialist belief in giving everyone, rural and urban, men and women, access to economic opportunities. Thai, Filipinos, Indonesians are regretting their decision to focus their growth in their 1 main city which is now resulting in unbalanced growth and a large population that is inadequately educated and trained. So stop it with this Western propaganda about belittling your political heritage.

Note these are the main strategies the US uses around the world to get what they want
USA needs VN maybe more than VN needs the wAr-mericans. The biggest market in the future of this area is China, not the US. It would be stupid to align with a declining power instead of the rising one.

Vietnam government is very unlikely going to listen to the people on foreign policy, so when push comes to shove, they'll ditch the friendly facade towards the Americans and try to appease China as much as possible. The reasoning goes beyond the similar systems and ideologies the regime has with Beijing, it's about "not being able to choose our neighbors, so we must learn to live peacefully with them".
While on the outside it may be more friendly to the US than China, when the times comes for Vietnamese government to pick a side, It's unlikely that they'll pick the one that's ideologically and geographically distant to them, even if it means having to compromise.
Afterall, would the US come to rescue Vietnam when it actually gets into a conflict with China? highly unlikely. The US is already reluctant when it comes to defending Taiwan, let alone a communist state that has little tangible interest with the US other than being "an enemy of their enemy
US lost the war to Vietnam. Is the US army really that powerful when it has never been truly tested in battles. All the countries that US defeated were militarily weak but US did not even manage to tame the Afghans & Talibans.

Red Sea crisis is still going on after 60 days and disrupting global supply chains. Main maritime carriers - like Maersk, MSC, Evergreen, CMA CGM - keep diverting all container vessels from Red Sea routes around Africa’s Cape of Good Hope. The number of cargo ships in the Red Sea has decreased by 90% compared to 2023 (Clarksons Research).
The repercussions of the Suez Canal Crisis reverberated across the global shipping industry.
Hundreds of large vessels are rerouting around the southern tip of Africa, a longer route adding 10-14 days of travel, to escape drone and missile attacks by Yemeni Houthis.
This has created a multiple-front storm for global trade: freight rates increasing daily, due to longer shipping times and container ships and oil tankers’ shortage (occupied for longer). Higher insurance costs must then be added to the cost of fuel.
Vietnam is connecting the intermodal railway to China and through China to Russia, Mongolia, Kazakhstan, Central Asian and European countries... Through China's railway infrastructure, Vietnam also transports tea , coffee, ,tropical fruits, food, etc. to Russia, transporting garments, leather and shoes, manufactured goods, etc. to Europe...
Compared to waterways, rail transport time is also significantly faster and the US navy is nowhere to be seen. For example, a container transported by ship from Vietnam to Russia can take up to 45 days, while transporting by rail only takes 25 days. Railways also have an advantage when it comes to bringing goods deep inland.

Lol, Japan did that to themselves. They overinvested in real estate and a lot of other things. China did the same thing, only 10x worse and now that China's economy is collapsing due to their mismanagement, they are blaming the U.S... It turns out you can't build ghost cities and bridges to nowhere using debt forever😂🤣 At least Japan got rich first. China is still dirt poor with a GDP per capita of a poor African country. 600 million people in China make less than $125/month. The CCP already spent all their pension funds and soon retired Chinese people won't be able to get even the tiny pensions they worked their whole lives for😂 And the biggest difference between Japan and China is Japan didn't make enemies with the entire world forcing the entire civilized world to decouple from them. Everyone likes Japan and is able to do business with them. China only understands how to lie, cheat and steal. China built their entire economy on stolen western tech. They steal $600 billion a year in IP theft from the U.S. alone. It's amazing that western countries put up with them for this long😂🤣

Gone is the shine of the US onto the world... cant imagine that in the 1980s a city like San Francisco and the bay cities impressed me during my undergraduate days of study in the US... now in the 2024+ homelessness, drugs and dirty streets of San Francisco and aging same buildings in these cities compared to the amazing cities of China in Shanghai, Beijing, Shenjeng and most of the other main chinese cities where u can even walk around to the wee hours of the morning completely safe and sound, I doubt anyone will take the risk in the US streets of New York to California cities....
Anyways, kudos to Vietnam cuz these will uplift their economy and help accelerate their economy upwards and is good for the region. China is already retunning their economy towards the dual track which is internal domestic growth and export driven growth, the belt and road initiative planted decades ago has matured and will slowly pickup steam as more of the global south economies move forward and these countries will contribute to the world economy.
There will come a day where US exported wars that fuel their economy will dry up as more countries are aware of the US Military Industrial Complex meddling to destabilize regions to keep continue to sell their exorbitant and useless military hardware to the world, the Ukraine conflict has shown that all the bell and whistles of the US and the west cant even make a dent in old Soviet upgrades use by the Russians, also the era of drones and hypersonic missiles is more effective together with drone intel technology that is much faster than slower satellite image technology for real time combat on the ground!

The cross-border standard railway connectivity between China and Vietnam will be completed after a year. The grand vision of the Pan-Asia Railway took a significant step forward, becoming the most tangible echo in Sino-Vietnamese cooperation.
Railways also have an advantage when it comes to bringing goods deep inland

To some of my Vietnamese brothers and sisters in Vietnam and other countries (such as the US, Canada, etc) who think that Vietnam "must" sides with the US or China. Whatever naive thoughts (democracy, freedom, human rights, good friends, etc) about the US or China you have in your mind, the only result of this action (in which Vietnam sides with the US or China) is death and suffering of nearly 100 million Vietnamese people living in Vietnam. If you're a true Vietnamese who loves Vietnam, or moreover, a human who has human feelings. Would you still be able to sleep well and continue your normal life without guilt when knowing that you played a direct/indirect role in those deaths and sufferings?

I don't think it'll be the top winner, but rather a beneficiary. Western companies realize it's risky to rely solely on one country, so they're spreading their supply chains across multiple nations. This prevents any single country from gaining too much leverage. Plus, Vietnam lacks the population and infrastructure for all industries.

The idea sounds fair and smart however it is not feasible for Vietnam. A country like Singapore with its own inner powers could apply, but a developing one like Vietnam. Economically Vietnam depends on Chinese products, the Communist party sides with their bigger brother despite the fear and the hatre while socially young people adopt the US way in the way they understand it but holding the nationalist mindset as China :D Walking on the rope might be risky if your muscles are weak.

The result would probably be Chinese supply chains reaching into Vietnam to sell to the West without sanctions. Vietnam will develop, industrialise and integrate with both the West and China for maximum economic benefit.

Why must the east follow the west rules amd instructions? All these rules are for the west advantages . Also they no longer the authority to tell people in the east what to do. This is not the 10th century when China was a begger and attacked by the west and forced to follow their instructions. Now China is boss in the east and they will set their rules for others to follow.

I wish USA would court Philippines more exclusively to avoid conflicts with Chinese satellites…. Not that Vietnam is such a satellite, but more so not to encroach on more Asian regions that don’t share a history as the Philippines does with United States.
Also Mr. Clark shows the devotion for human rights by giving back to the country. The world should know, most Americans are very caring and kind hearted like this despite what our government does.
