  • 450 Bushmaster Hornady Custom 250 grain FTX ammo ballistics gel test fired from a Ruger American Ranch with 16 inch barrel.
    Range gear: masonoutdoors.com
    Leather gear: www.masonleather.com
    All shots are fired from a distance of 100 yards to encompass the majority of common real world hunting scenarios.
    I will be shooting into 10% ballistics gel from www.clearballistics.com that has been calibrated to meet the FBI ballistics testing protocol.
    While ballistics gel isn’t an exact proxy for big game, small game, predators or defensive situations, it does provide a repeatable medium through which to test various bullets and ammunitions against each other.
    With each type of ammo tested I collect data on bullet penetration depth, bullet weight retention, bullet expansion and muzzle velocity.
    For reference, bullet expansion is measured at the widest expanded point using a calibrated Frankford Arsenal Digital Caliper.
    Bullet weight is measured using a calibrated Frankford Arsenal Digital Scale after having removed as much ballistics gel as possible from the expanded bullets.
    Bullet velocity is measured using a ProChronoPal chronograph set approximately 7’ from the shooting bench.
    I am fully aware that a chronograph measuring bullet velocity from 7’ away from the muzzle is going to register a slower velocity than if velocity were measured directly at the muzzle, but that difference is going to be so small as to be all but irrelevant in regards to comparison of actual measured velocity versus factory stated velocity.
    My goal with these ballistics gel tests is to provide hunters like you and I with the most objective information possible to help us make the best choice for our particular hunting situation.
    The results of these tests are my own and I cannot guarantee the same or similar performance on your part. The views and opinions expressed in this video are solely my own.
    All videos are filmed in a safe and controlled environment on a private range with all applicable safety precautions by a trained professional.

    As an Australian, I work mostly in metric. I sometimes use imperial for length, but that is about it.
    So when a I heard Yanks talk about a round being so many "grain", I thought they were talking about how manny prices of propelent were in it.

    I've never understood this round. 350 legend hammers everything I hunt with a 1/4 of the recoil.

    • @johnnorman7708
      @johnnorman7708 Před 4 měsíci +1

      It's probably a little better than the .350 Legend for the bigger than deer size game.

    • @Yoopermanbeau
      @Yoopermanbeau Před 4 měsíci

      450 was designed for elk hunting within 175 yards. 350 was designed for deer and hogs I believe.

    • @joshuaclark3414
      @joshuaclark3414 Před 3 měsíci

      Well actually I think 450 BM was designed to destroy engine blocks in the military and designed with the ar15 platform in mind.

    I just dont see the use case for this round. Maybe bear in those few weird states like ohio that require straightwall. Other than that....?

    • @Magnum_Express
      @Magnum_Express Před 4 měsíci

      I think it would be a good cartridge for those hunting in wooded areas where 75 yards is a long shot. It would handle anything on 4 legs out to 150 yards. I could see it replacing an old 30-30 or someone wanting to use their AR for bear or elk, while reserving their 5.56 upper for deer or varmints. I mean the 350 legend is just this but weaker and everyone loves that thing for whatever reason. I personally wouldn't mind owning a 400 legend for where/what I hunt.

    • @Matt-dc8lp
      @Matt-dc8lp Před 4 měsíci

      @Magnum_Express you're not wrong but the same can be done with something much more affordable/common like a 308.

    • @Magnum_Express
      @Magnum_Express Před 4 měsíci

      @@Matt-dc8lp i agree. I see the 450 as a mostly AR platform caliber. The reason to own one in bolt would be to compliment your ar15, as a cheap truck/ranch gun for hogs or a camp gun in bear country.
