What amazes me about Adam (aside from all the obvious things) is that he seems to remember every single person who ever taught him something about whipmaking. Everything he shows in the video is "I learned this from.." or "This is the way so-and-so does it". He even just casually name drops Nick.
Adam has an incredible memory for sure!
@NicksWhipShop I just recently got infatuated with whip making and I fell onto your channel and even though Adam has tons of experience and a completely different way of whip making I feel that the extra steps you use in your whips have to give them a bit of an edge in functionality but I have little to no experience whip cracking so I cant positively say that. I'm only basing that opinion on the construction of your whips. Great video. Long! But great. Thanks for your vivid explanation in your posts.

It’s the very end of 2023 and despite having seen this video before, I’m FINALLY starting my own whip. I got the belly done today; it took me all day long lol. But this is a terrific video to help beginners like me and I’m really proud of what I did so far and I’m actually impressed with how well I could do it; I think it’s the really great explanations and video work that made it perfectly clear what to do. Thank you guys both so much for this video, I think I found a new couple of hobbies!
When I saw this video with both of you in it, I freaking squealed in delight. Its an honor and a privilege to see you two working together on a video ♥
Thanks for watching!!
I watched from start to finish. I am so hooked this is my new passion hobby to learn. Just facinated! I picked up a vintage Bucheimer Bull Whip for 20 bucks and fell in love with it.

WOW! Thats pretty much the way it works out sometimes.
I can’t believed I sat through the whole thing with my jaw on the floor. WOW! Beautiful work!
I must have watched this video 4 times in its entirety, absorbing more and more information every time. This video literally revolutionized my whip making, and Ive made 4 whips since this came out!

Nick, I've watched a lot of your videos. I really enjoy them, I watched this one and remember Adam joking about whether anyone would watch the full length of it. I did...over and over, since this was the first whip I made. Though I had to go through a learning curve, the whip turned out great! A big thanks to you for your great instructional videos and to Adam Winrich for sharing his design and whip making techniques!
My first good whip was made by a nice maker named Dakota, her whips are not expensive but extremely high quality. You guys both taught me how to make custom crackers. I prefer Kevlar or Dyneema. You guys are all awesome for helping others learn.
I was waiting forever for a video like this!!! Thank you Nick and Adam!!!!
Welcome!
Heck yeah! Good stuff.
I've been watching your videos for the last 3 weeks. I love how you have guest whip makers. I think a nice tight community like that is great. I just got back into braiding and offered my son a belt. Odd he didn't want a belt he wanted a whip like I made way back (like 30-35 years ago) when I was messing around with a piece of thread all and some paracord. It was a cute little whip and I used it all the time then My son took it over after bout 15 years. I think its lost with time now. Maybe I will come across it in a box some day. till then I'm gonna try to make one the right way. Thank you for all the tips and pointers. Maybe I will post you a picture of a 60+ year old mexican made whip that is now in 2 pieces. the handle broke off. It was my Grand-fathers.
Always great watching good whipmaking tutorials. My next projects will be two matched 4‘ Bullwhips, one for me and one for my significant other, after those two I‘ll propably attempt this build as well as a stockwhip
This is my third time watching it from beginning to end. Love you guys work. I've made 5 whips because of you guys. Thank you so much
I needed a functional stock whip. I grew up braiding and fixing tack... Adam, thank you for this! I was able to expand my knowledge and craft a stock whip that will be greatly used. You can't buy anything crafted so well as what you have taught how to make here. The best whip maker on youtube I've found! Thank you.

This is an amazing tutorial. I bought a cheap whip when I was out west this summer and while I can crack it quite consistently it doesn't flow the way I see other whips flow. I was looking at buying another and happened to come across some other whip making tutorials where they were using super glue, BBs, and electrical tape. While functional, they just seemed so, I don't know, generic or cheap and that wasn't what I wanted to do. Then this video popped up. Adam was doing the binding when I started gathering materials (pretty much all of which I already had) and absorbing as much as I could on the first viewing. I'm on my 3rd time through, pausing where I need to and rewinding to double check. Currently working on my overlay and I think I'm gonna do a little different patterning through the handle. When it's complete I'll try to send in some pics.
I have used your videos to inspire designs for the way i bread guitar straps. Your plaiting is amazing nws is amazing and this has me wanting to attempt a whip.
Thank you guys so much for doing a collaboration video!!!! You guys have both taught me so much and I appreciate the knowledge you share. Everyone is surprised that I hand make these whips but I obviously couldnt do it without people like you.
You're very welcome! Adam has been such an inspiration to all of us in the whip community.
I’d concur with what Blade said! Just started my second whip as demonstrated here by Adam. Going bigger this time, it’s going to be a full 3 footer this time! 😁 Thanks guys for sharing.
Adam's the man! I followed his advice and my first whip is a beast. It's everything I wanted in a whip. Thanks Adam. Wish you all the best.
That is one talented fellow!
In the sixties my older brother went to Mexico and he brought me back a Mexican bullwhip!
As a young kid I had all of my friends running for cover for weeks until I decided to try and figure out how the thing was made.
Let’s just say that now I know but the whip never was the same.
The core of the whip was wood for the handle and the rest was made from a garden hose and various sizes of rope. The outside was all leather. I wish it had survived till today!
I’ve been looking forward to this video for a while! Thank you Adam for sharing your experience and wisdom and of course thank you Nick for facilitating all this and for your epic video production skills. You have such a creative and artistic eye. It’s always a pleasure to watch!
Thank you very much Christian!
I used this as a starting point for my first foray into whipmaking and while there were some bumps along the way the end product turned out beautifully. Thank you both so much for putting this out there for people to learn from.
You're welcome! Thank you for watching and I'm glad it was helpful.
Super awesome work, 2 legends in 1 video. Made my first bull whip months ago following nick very carefully, and guess who is plaiting 1 after this video. Keep it up guys well done
I am one of the few that watched this video beginning to end in one sitting. Then a second time to take notes and make sketches. Finally a third time to edit my notes for accuracy. Subsequent viewings were in specific sections also to edit my notes for accuracy, Thanks for sharing your whip making techniques.
Crazy to think about but my dad had bought a cheap whip from a yard sale and I was playing with it watching Adams videos and ended up accidentally breaking it so trying to figure out how to repair the darn thing I came across next video braiding a 6-ft black bull whip. I did awful repair job with the whip being leather and it broke in the middle and so the other half of it being paracord but since then I've made many many whips and they've all been very good. thanks guys
Nice work guys, thank you for taking the time to share. i like the variation on the end knot

Very welcome! Thanks for watching!
I know this is your channel Nick, your talent goes without saying! Thank you for making this video possible.
Thanks Terry!
I've learned that using a hook is much better than using a vice when doing a under one over one in a 16 plait because it's much easier to look round the back to check the pattern. Having done a dozen whips in a vice I'm now going to try this method, might be a new learning curve. Cheers Nick and Adam
Refreshing. Thank you nick. Thank you adam. You guys are the best.

I put it on 1/4 to half speed through a lot of it so i could try and keep up. Still had to pause or rewind at times.
Have to watch it and rewind. Even then you will end up watching it a few times if you are following the style.

You're welcome!
Nick & Adam: Many thanks for posting this video! You helped me repair my 9' stock whip I use horse back for moving cows. Very detailed, easy to follow, lots of great additional information. The whip was a 4 thong round braid to 4 thong (2)-twisted to the fall but, I was able to go to from 4-thong to 3 thong twist like in the video and cut out the broken thong. Cracks better then before! THANKS!!
I did it! I made a whip with this video. I even got it to crack a couple times. Thanks for filming this and making more tutorials. I can't wait to make more.
Congrats Fern! Glad it was helpful. More to come!
As far as wax goes I use archery bow string wax with a little extra bees wax and it seems to work well for me ,so now I'll have to try a paracord whip build myself. Thank you love the video, well explained .

Don't know how often i watched this video. Think, i can retell most of Adam's words now. 😄
Replicating core and belly was no problem (hope so), but now i'm struggling since hours with the beginning of the overlay.
I'd like to braid these first inches of the grip pattern, the wedding band i'll probably leave for later projects.
This shall be my first selfmade bullwhip and it was you guys, Nick and Adam, who brought me up to this.
Well, in a distant future, i hope to share a picture of the completed whip.
Best regards from germany!
Yes! This has been exactly the type of whip I've been working on to make a lower price option for commissions
I'm glad to see the masters have also been working on the budget whip design too 😍
I've done some experimenting using a wooden handle core, which being thicker, I shave the end down like a stock whip and bind my core stands only onto the end that way. I'm sure binding the strands over the rod makes it a bit more comfortable than having just hard wood underneath the handle overlay
If this is going to be your “budget” design, what is your regular build like? My point with this design is that there is no real advantage to adding more bellies in a paracord whip other than it sounds cool.
I have also used a dowel foundation and bound the strands on the end of it. The comfort doesn’t change. What changes is the weight of the handle, which is lighter than a steel handle. The lighter handle can make multiple cracks easier.
Recently that actually has become my regular design since I've found I much prefer lighter whips for my personal use. With the whips I've sold, I used two bellies over a steel core to purposefully add more weight per customer request. Or two bellies for a snake whip. Only after experimenting I found my love for lightweight whips and have since been keeping both length and diameter down in my bull whips.
You are right, but the heft of more bellies does give the whip a nice feeling of integrity, especially to the unitiated who want a whip that looks good, cracks loud, and feels powerful to hold
Welp, time to try this baby out. Thanks both to you Adam and Nick!

I’m wanting to make a 10ft in this style and you help me determine the core and 1st belly lengths need to be
I made my first whip in Nick's current whip making style. A 6ft. Then I made a little 2 foot pocket whip. Making a 8 ft next in Adam Winrich style. You guys are both awesome. I've picked up a new very fulfilling hobby. It is very time consuming but when you get it all done and waxed. Bring it outside for the first time. Maybe after a few hard wacks to the hands or other body parts. That first crack and others are the best knowing that you spent all that time hand making it yet yourself. Anyone made a 8 ft or longer with only one belly ? Anyone with personal experience with this. I would hate to take all that time and it not work right.
How did it turn out?
Re: Answers before effort. Absolutely agree with you. I can't count the number of times on the jobsite I get asked, "how do I do it?" To which I almost always answer "Tell me (or show ma) how you WOULD do it first."
I tried Adams foot technique with my artificial sinew wraps, last night. Boy was that a lot easier on my arm.
Wonderful professional work
I have time to watch this from start to finish. ;)
This is amazing, I'm astounded by the patience, respect
i think this is my first youtube comment ever. i was trying to find a method of securing a glass condenser tube to a boiler flask to replace an ill fitting clip as a quick and dirty solution. this led me down a rabbit hole of marlinspike seamanship, paracord monkey fists, turkshead tutorials, and eventually whip construction after toying with a keychain monkey fist i made that had a whip like popper dangly bit that gave off an unexpected pop when id spin it around my fingers.
i half assed a few micro whip sized lengths of tapered knots basically, which functioned about like you'd expect, and then ran across this channel looking to see how whips are actually made as a curiosity more than for the instruction. i was just killing time and giving away poorly made keychains to friends during lockdown.
i was sinking into a pretty deep depression at the time as my world crumbled around me, out of work, lost relationship, isolated, sickness, and was dealing with suicidal ideation, drug addiction, and was consumed with debilitating anxiety and stress and had nothing to look forward to, no joy, just an unhealthy preoccupation with wallowing in sorrow and having emotional breakdowns that were eventually going to make me do something stupid.
nick, i watched you make a snakewhip, and at the end you tested it at night in the cold surrounded by snow, and you had the biggest smile on your face. you had so much fun and you were energized by it, you were practically boyant, it brought you peace and happiness and seemed like you were bursting with enjoyment.
i got me some of that. my whips are getting better with each one i make. my snake whip kind of represents my escape from despair. learning to use it and finally hearing it crack startlingly loud as a gunshot filled me excitement and satisfaction and the making of it gave me peace and restored a sense of purpose i couldnt find numbing myself with drugs and escaping reality.
thank you for sharing your joy. your work gave me comfort, your passion showed me the escape i needed exactly when i needed someone to point the way. and there you were, spot lit in snowy darkness, inviting me to have what you had to share. i want to say an addiction to crack, because my sense of humor is back. but really it was a part of your life you shared, and in this video adam shares his too. what was shared with him, and shared with you, and shared with me goes beyond knowledge and whip making. you helped me turn the end of my rope into something else. im very grateful for the gift.
Thank you so much for sharing this with me, my friend. At the end of the day, it's messages and comments like these that ultimately keep me making these videos. I'm very sorry that you exprienced such pain in those times. It gives me a true sense of purpose, far beyond just teaching people how to make whips, knowing that I was able to help you out of that dark place. I'm so glad that you are feeling better. Stay strong and keep up the great work my friend. Many more videos to come!

Hey Nick just a quick question. Sometimes when I drop strands in the overlay, it happens such that I get 2 cords doubled up next to each other, without a strand in between. Is there a way to avoid this, or is it unavoidable in some cases?

@@NicksWhipShop you're welcome! Interesting video, although I don't think I'll make that whip in a while.
But the setup for yoke plaiting was interesting to say the least. Now to figure out how to transform the measurements to an 8 foot long with 2 bellies 🤦♂️
This is fantastic! I spoke with Adam at a Ren Faire about how him and his wife made their performance hybrid whips and discussed this single belly technique with multiple strands of non-gutted cord for the core. Seeing this start to finish totally helped me fill in the gaps from our conversation.
Only one thing to comment on...
Adam mentions as he goes from 8 plait to 4 plait, he starts once he gets to only two strands into the core (1:30:10) ... And when he drops strands he doesn't cut it at the next drop, but rather the one after... (1:34:33)
If that's the case, then with two in the core, the first drop makes it 3 in the core, the second drop makes it 4... So what I'm thinking is at the second drop, perhaps cut one of the two original core strands, that way it doesn't jump up to 4, but only 3 This would take some extra weight out of the end of the thong. Here's a photo: i.imgur.com/wm7oYN6.png
Thank you from Queensland Australia. I watched it start to finish. 😎 I have even stopped and rewound some parts. You must have very strong hands because I have tried knotting like that to make horse leads but it can take me days to do because I get so tired and sore.
