How To Braid A Diamond Tread Pattern For Your Bullwhip Handle - A Tutorial
In this video I'd like to show you how to set up and braid a 24-plait handle for your bullwhip, in what looks like the common slip resistant pattern seen on floors and toolboxes around the world.
This is different from the 24-plait we are used to, as there are two types of strands being used together - Type #95 paracord, and 550 paracord. Three strands are being plaited together at the same time to make up this pattern, so don't let the large number of strands scare you! These two different types of cord working together don't just create a unique look, they also create excellent grip and comfort in the hand.

I've teamed up with my friend Martin Guerra to create a new and unique type of bullwhip handle! Martin has been forging knives from scratch for 40 years, and has been stabilizing exotic woods for nearly as long. In this video we'll take a look at Martin's beautiful work, and delve into the exciting process of shaping Martin's hand-crafted turning blanks into handles for whips.

A Visit From The Whip That Changed My Life - 7 Years Later
I purchased an 8ft kangaroo leather bullwhip. It came with a tapered leather fall with cracker. The fall was 26" and the cracker was 12". I was able get a crack using only the cattleman's crack and only then when using significant effort. I shorted the fall to 24" and the cracker to 8" per your video. Whip performs cracks significantly better now. Thank you.
That was very well explained and I now have an awesome whip.Thank you.
thank you for this video
May be too late But I want a 3 FT BullWhip
It's funny that the Bob Ross of whipmaking says this about squinting, my painting teacher used to tell me same. :)
I want to try this, but where I live (over here in Belgium) it's not easy to find the right type of cord. Especially sinker cord seems to be hard to find. Is it similar to coreless 650 paracord? I can also find 750 or 1250 locally and I could take out the core myself if that would be better. Does anyone have some words of wisdom for me?
My grandpa 🥲🫶🏻 Thankyou for your kind words
Thank you for your kind words Papa truly was the master of his craft,he is missed every single day
Thanks nick. Great tutorial.
Many thanks your video is helping me out.
Aug 15 ..my Birthday..can I get one?
He he he. I do use my feet a lot while whip making.
great. i could tell the difference , as your hand speed was less. also, the knot is a great tip.. thanks nick.
dear nick, thanks much for sharing this information. my second whip was a 4ft snakewhip, using your 2018 method, and it came out nicely. subsequently i received my first request for a whip. my go-to is the bare bones (for now) as it is a time saver. i learned so much, making a bare bones for the second time. much appreciated. i hope that the two of you are well.
Nick please give me a whip!!! I'll trade you one that I made 😊
I'm a bit confused on materials. Do I need stuff with adhesive backsides? The items listed in the description dont have that. Do I want adhesive neoprene and pleather?
Nick where’ve you been at man? I need more content! But in all seriousness, I hope all is well! God bless you
I’ve built 2 of your micro whips. The first one turned out rather poorly, the second one was better. It still had a few errors. The problem I am having is the mid and heel knots. I can’t follow along because the video goes through it too fast. I would appreciate tutorial videos showing the process at a much slower pace. I have been trying for at least two days, and just can’t get it. I also had problems keeping the strands in the correct order, but the second one was better, but it still has some errors.
Yes I am very intrested thank you brother 🙏 ❤️
Самый простой метод! Молодец! 🤝🇷🇺
Your paracord bracelets are great, a question, what do you recommend, for the w we are starting what the kit is The ideal
Great end product. Pretty poor confusing explanation tho...
I wish this was a tutorial on how to make the Indiana Jones whip.
That is so cool . You color choice excellent. I'm will try ,if I don't get it
It would be nice to see a video of how you made that one because that's the kind I want to make, not the one in the suggested tutorial.
Hot cowboys
thanks nick. just finished the 2nd belly. watching you makes it easier for me to do the quality i desire. the bare bones bullwhip i built in April is holding up well. i extended to 4:, so my taper is not ideal, but i am learning much. how is everything with you?
Great job good cinematics too :)
Lol loved the end
This was awesome to see something a lil bit more managable as a first whip project
I just wanted to thank you for the quality of your worksmanship both in the whipbuilding process; in addition to how you showcased how much of a daunting task this was for you throughout the process and trusting your skills is what got you through it a lot of people, myself included watching your sheer determination and perseverence even when you doubted yourself. This whole video was worth its weight in gold in every second including wishing batman would come around again. Wish you luck on your continued journey and I hope this video inspires people to persevere😊
I really enjoyed trying this one out! I found that at the end of the plaiting, I had a lot less leftover in the strands than Adam. Does that mean I should be plaiting tighter??
Just a note about the strand drops: if you start the herring bone in U4O5 instead of U5O4, it lets you make a clean drop to 16 plait U4O4 without a double strand overlap, and U4O4 also lends itself cleanly to drop to 14 plait U4O3.
thank you adam for sharing the many techniques. both those starts, and the triangular 6plait will come in handy. almost like going down under to learn the secret techniques. thanks nick for your hard work in maintaining such a quality channel.
I would like to Do this but i dont have access to your special cord in my country. Can I use normal paracord instead? Mby paracord type II ?
LOL, and I just used this as a foundation to make a Steve's Universe "Amethyst" Inspired 4-and-a-Half-Foot, 16 Plait, Split-Thong Whip-Flail with Monkeyfists, a Turk's Head Heelknot and Thump-Mat Hand Guard for a cosplay friend. While not intended to be used as a weapon, this thing could still seriously mess someone up! czcams.com/video/k6BlfzTTQUo/video.htmlsi=-cpSB10AaxsWfnDp
just finished this whip. just awesome video to follow. Thank you very much. You have inspired me to start making whips. The first one I made was a micro Snake whip, then a 3 foot snake whip. I made it black and neon green to really compliment the "snake" in it^^ It was a real challange to finish this one but im happy that I made it. I actually really just finished the last turks head (I improvised a little and made it a 3 pass as I used leather instead of lead). It took me plenty of houres haha but it was worth it I want to say thank you! And I want to ask you something too. I really am scared of waxing the whip. It is really nessecary? Will it protect the whip from mud and sth or is it just for the roll-out? I red an article about waxing which said it isnt really nessecary and without waxing you can just wash your whip with water and soak it if it gets muddy/dirty and when its waxed you cant really do it anymore. I am really conflicted tbh I would really appreciate your opinion on the pros/cons and thank you in advance. Only if you have the time of course. Have a nice day :D
Nick, I'm wondering if you have you ever used the guts of paracord to bind? For my last few projects I have been untwisting a single thread of para-guts into its three filaments and using a single filament as binding material. Its not ideal to work with as it can get twisted and fray a little, however i have not noticed any slackening off of my transitions. Also, its free so thats a bonus. have you tried this, and what do you think?
Notes 1:05 Making 3ft / 12 plait / 4 point fall hitch / 2 belly / shot loaded snake whip
3:36 Type 3, 550 military grade paracord (120 ft total)
5:51 Core for shot 1 piece @ 3 ft - 2 inches Empty end knot at 8 inches Empty 1 inch at other end Clamp 0.5 inch into clamp
12:23 1st belly 4 plait cut 2 pieces @ 5 ft Braid to tails about 3 inches left
20:44 2nd belly 8 plait cut 2 pieces @ 7 ft 1 piece @ 5 ft 1 piece @ 2 ft - 6 inches Knot pieces in the center of 7 ft pieces Stagger 2.5 or 3 inches then knot center of 5 ft piece Stagger 2.5 to 3 inches then knot center of 2 ft - 6 inch piece
28:28 Drop shortest strand
I grind or file a couple divots in strategic spots. Often just scuffing will provide enough friction to hold in place.
Hello I was wondering what will happen if you wax the whip two times
Very interested in the braiding
Sticks and stones may break my bones... But whips and chains excite me.
Awesome instruction and a very pretty whip. Thank you. Imma try and do one of my own. I got a bull whip in Hungary on a recent trip and I’m hooked. ✌️
Your the best my friend and we will meet someday in the future.
I just found this video while looking for skyrim furniture to make. What I will say about this video is it's great because you are showing the learning process that everyone goes through. It also looks like you aren't afraid to make mistakes and as this video is 9 years old, you are probably pretty good at several things by now. Again great video!
Thank you for watching! I didn't think anyone watched this video anymore.. Glad you enjoyed!
Ok is there a better video for the 1:45 mark I’m on my 12th attempt and same problem every time the front looks like the video the back is a birds nest
Hi my name is Sonny i am a new fan of yours i have 3 whips under my belt now, and im the guy who is always trying to reinvent the wheel and i have reinvented the cracker and i thought i would share it with you first tell me what you think
hello nick first of all thank for your video for the whip making tutorial ,but i wonder during wax the whip ,Should i worried about immersing the whip in that liquid will degraded my electrical tape ,resulted in loosing the tensile of the whip
how would you do this pattern for a 12 plait whip?
