  • Hi everyone, in today's video we'll be focusing on building two 7x6 Turk's Head knots (tied in Whipmaker's Cord - see links below to purchase) around a ferrule on the transition of this Zorro style, custom bullwhip that I made. For the foundations we will be using 1/32in thick lead sheeting, a material that I've been using often to build transition knot foundations as well as heel knot foundations. We'll also be building up the heel foundation using a new method, as well as tying a knot on the thong that is characteristic of Zorro style bullwhips. I hope you enjoy!

I like the fact that you talk us through the knot every time. Even though I have got it down, it helps to have reminders. Also there is a lot of people that struggle with TH knots, so talking us through every knots is very helpful.

Yeah I'm trying to get them down. I've made about a dozen whips now and I'm trying to get them down, they're definitely challenging for people who've never even heard of them before lol, once I get that down I'll be much better off. One other issue I have is when transitioning with and continuing the overlay off of the end of the belly and closing in the end of the belly, for some reason, it ends up working its way through on two of my whips, idk why it's happening either. I keep watching nicks videos to see what I'm not doing right.

I'VE MINED THE INTERNETS FOR INFO ON LEAD AND SAFE HANDELING PRACTICES. HOWEVER, I DIDN'T WANT TO PUT ANYTHING HERE WITHOUT YOUR SAY SO. LET ME KNOW IF IT'S OK.
Also looking forward to another weather video. Sometimes, when it's windy, I walk up to the basket ball courts to see if I can spot any eddies, and sometimes further up into the fields to spot some dirt devils; they're so fun to watch. Great video and another awesome whip👌🏽.

Good to see you back around Nick! I’m not a builder of whips, but learned from you what whip to purchase first and different ways to CRACK it. I own a 5 and a 7 footer. 7 with ferrule. Looking for a 9 and a Stock Whip. Love all your work and videos

Once again you guide me in a new direction. Lead stripps... as an rc glider pilot I have pounds of that. And I just finished the overlay of a Zorro style whip. Might I recommend a very small drop of super glue to hold the foundation at the 3mm mark prior to nails.
Thank you for the new lesson my friend.

Absolutely fantastic stuff man! I have yet to make a full blown whip, BUT I have made some fun bb loaded maybe 5 foot small whips from your information, and they are a blast to mess with. I also have bought a (I legit have no idea) whip from a local farm supplier that has a handle that spins (kinda weird) for a very cheap price. However the last almost 1/3 of it basically blew out after a bit of me practicing (first "ligit" whip 😂) so I did rebuild the last section. It's VERY far from ideal, but it's 100% better than it was. I have made the thong, and cracker as you have shown from 550 paracord, and obviously the transition there is abysmal, but again it's way better than the thing was when purchased. So far I'm on I think my 5th cracker tho, and can split maple leaves of a tree in my back yard every shot, so I thank you a LOT for at least giving me enough knowledge to make a complete POS whip I picked up for about $10 into something usable with a little bit of work. Of course one day I would love to be able to make a full whip myself. Thank you for your time and patience making these videos.

Fantastic video, after years of dithering I'm convinced. I've finally decided to take the plunge and make a whip. I'm thinking of a six or seven foot bull with a single belly like the one you built with Adam Winrich in 2019 but with a ferrule as you've done here.
One word of cuation from this beginner though, lead is deadly! Bare handed handling of it and abradding or burnishing it increases the likelyhood of absorbing it through your skin. Always use safe handling percautions when using lead. Lead posioning is real and it's deadly! ☠

I completely agree. I've been mining the internets for info educating myself and would like to paste some of it here, only if Nick's OK with it, of course.

Always appreciate a longer tutorial; I know how much work it takes. Repetition isn't a problem; someone may watch this video before other's and feel confused/intimidated for lack of knot info - plus the ASMR value. I knew you wouldn't leave the second transition knot as it was and thus felt no panic haha. Would it make sense to try blunting and shaping the ferrule side of the edges before nailing them in place, or am I over thinking the process? I'd worry about damaging such a beautiful ferrule. Could pleather or neoprene be used for cone knots as well, or do you recommend Lead?
There's always that split second temptation to try old food when finding it, and regretting it straight after😂. I hope Tipper, or whomever, is well😺.

Use Lead wipes if you really want to remove any residue from your hands; better to just wear gloves though. However, there are some that aren't fit for anything beyond general cleaning - the microns are too loose and certain chemicals/ residues can penetrate through. SKC are an interesting company that do those kinds of things along with Ghost Wipes used for surface detection of Lead.
