In this 6 video series I show you how to make a professional quality paracord bullwhip from start to finish! Buckle up, it's over 4 hours of content and I share as much whipmaking knowledge as I can in that time.

Just found your site(bull whip 1;Core)-you are a good teacher. You reminded of a discovery I found many years ago.In trying to slip heat shrink over a rough surface I rub a bit of dry bar soap or slightly dampened over the rough stuff(paracord!), even saliva. That is absorbed and eventually works its way out of the system-never had any slippage or chemical reaction. Thank you again for entertaining instructional videos. Dr. Bill

This looks VERY interesting, and is looks like it would make for an interesting challenge to build.
One thought (ideas for future videos?): some follow up videos that deep dive into the processes:
The big one would be yet another look at each level of plaiting as the primary focus:
1. You use two Different colors for the left and right sides [when you did this on a 16 plait, it made it MUCH easier to see what was going on]
2. You have short pause between each weave step so folks can "Follow along"
Another idea would be to replicate/deep dive into the various sinew wraps + kevlar string lock downs
1. Again do this with contrasting colors to make it easier to see what is going on
These are great thoughts, especially the 2 toned 6 plait and 10 plait layers, this was a definite oversight on my part. Maybe if I do a future video project I'll include this!

Here's an idea: Instead of 1/4 inch shrink-wrap over the sinker cord (the longer second piece of shrink wrap), try 5/16 inch shrink wrap. It would be easier to slip into place. The 5/16 will shrink down smaller than 1/4 inch after it is heated.
Since I made this video I've actually started doing this! So much easier!
have you tried adding the 2nd layer of shrink tubing from the end of the handle and pulling it over? just wondering if its any easier?
why is it only in my left ear?
I would think having the sinker cord go the full length of the steel handle would be better for holding the sinker cord onto the handle.
What waws the purporse of the rug liner?
The tie off method for core material in the video states use an extra 4"; but the provided blueprint link no longer references this it seems -- should we just drop that?
If you're using the tie off methode be sure to use some extra core material, as it's difficult to predict how much material you'll waste in the core loading process. Does this answer your question?

What made you settle on 8 inches of shot in the core? Have you made whips with less or more and how did that effect the whip???
Great question! First, the 8 inches is just for my 6 footers, I load more in longer whips and less in shorter whips. I used to load my cores further up in my bullwhips, but over the years I have trimmed it back to shorter lengths because I like the feel of it more. If you want a heavier or lighter whip by all means adjust to your liking! It's really a taste thing

@whipworks4468 You mentioned 3/8” shrink tubing for longer whips at the beginning of the video. Do you shrink that over 2” x 1/4” piece at the transition after wrapping with sinew? If not, would you be willing to share that information?
Hey, great question! I put the 3/8 inch piece over the 1/4" piece, and THEN I wrap it in artificial sinew, so two layers of shrink tubing and then rug liner and then artificial sinew. I hope this helps!
I know you have a blueprint which is great and needed. However, I find myself wondering what is going on inside the core. A diagram illustrating where all the processes start and stop would help me. For example; Is the shot touching the end of the rod inside the sheeth? I'm having to assume a few things that I'd rather be sure of. Otherwise, your external processes are explained well.
Yes! The shot is touching the rod inside of the sheeth at the tip, but not on the sides of the rod. Deos that make sense? It's a good clarification!
You should be band from using files less it’s a diamond or abrasive coated file it’s directional only cuts in one direction and if you drag the file backwards it kills the file other than that great vid
I am curious what kind of material you would use to load the paracord other than #9 shot. I don't have access to an ammunition like that where I am. Would fishing sinkers do the trick or would they make an odd bulbous shape?
There's all sorts of material you can use! Some people use the beaded strings that hang down from ceiling fans. BB's can work. Anything weighted that would fit in the sheath
Hey man just stumbled across this video. If I was to go the leather route how would it change the design? I would like to go with kangaroo and use stainless cable as my core. Any advice? Love the video thanks.
Hello, great question! A lot of what I show here would be similar, but kangaroo hide whips are very different. There's a book by Ron Edwards, "How to make whips" that may be helpful. There are also tutorial videos out there specifically about making leather whips. Sorry this answer isn't more helpful, good luck to you!

At the 7:29 minute mark you mention "this other piece of string I have here." What is the other piece of string?
It's kevlar string, but any sturdy relatively thin piece of string will work!
What is the string called that you sheath over the steel rod again? And will wax string work?
Artificial sinew! Wax string should work well too!

Watcher from the UK, what type of cord is the core? Trying to source locally and I'm not getting many results?
It's 1/4" sinker cord made by Tufline, it's tough to find even here in the US. I do sell it on my etsy shop if you're willing to pay the shipping
Why not steel cable for the loaded line ?
Some whips are, I find it too rigid. The Whip in Indiana Jones that was used for the car dragging scene in Raiders had a steel cable running through it!
if you are using the refrigerator tube and the funnel how do you do the tie off of the loaded section
You tie off the thong end, and you don't tie it off on the end that will go on the handle, you immediately attach it to the handle, does that make sense?
@@whipworks4468 so attach the rod ==load the shot then tie off after the shot is loaded at 8 1/2 inch as tight as you can?

I was going to comment and say using lead would be better because it's one of the two most dense metals known to mankind, I love lead the only other metal nearly as dense is gold...so it would go without saying that lead is much heavier than steel and wouldn't require as much to achieve the same amount of steel used
For sure, lead's density properties are amazing. For me, I'm trying to reduce my exposure as much as possible, so steel feels safer for me, even if it is less dense

@@FunkyTownFinatic 300 feet is a good buffer for a 6 footer, I know that an 8 footer uses about 300 feet exactly if that's a helpful reference! And one 5 oz bag of shot will work for you for one whip

1:15 When you refer to athletic tape, are you talking about “KT” tape? Or the stuff that they’ll use to tape hands and feet for support?

That's what he used, but I'm sure normal bbs like a few other people use would have a similar effect
If you are worried about lead getting on you as you make the whip, then why aren't you worried about it coming out as the whip ages? The nickel plated lead shot will rub on itself until it grinds away the plating, then you are just making lead dust... eventually, it will leach out of the binding, something to think about if you're squeamish, go all in on it.
I had the idea of stainless ball bearings or even stainless beads that could be strung together with monofilament and pulled through the sheathing with less effort.
bought 1/4 inch sinker cord and it wint even go over 1/2the diameter of the steel rod
should i try the 3/8 inch sinker
tried loosing it up over a wooden screwer that is thinner than the steel rod and it wouldn't fit
What brand was the sinker cord? And what diameter steel rod are you using?
@whipworks4468 Para cord galaxy website 1/4 inch sinker cord and lowes 1/4 inch steel rod and it measured at 1/4 inch
@@robertmainey7274 Hmm, I've never seen this product, I wonder if the 3/8 inch of their sinker cord would work? I've always used the Tufline brand of sinker cord. I sell it on my Etsy shop if you'd like some that you know would work!

What type of paracord is used in the core. This most definitely is not 550 paracord.

@@jackkageweeb7315 I have used paracord like that before and it can't work. You may need to figure out a different technique of loading it and attaching it to the handle than what I show in these videos
@@whipworks4468 One more question for your 6 plait, 10 plait and 16 plait layer I can use 550 type III paracord because I have some laying around.
