  • In this video we'll talk about how bullwhips perform differently, depending on their length. We'll discuss some of the pros and cons of using a longer or shorter whip, as well as discuss my personal suggestion for how long your first whip should be (6ft or 7ft).

Good one brother! Couldn't agree more. My personal recommendation for people starting out is 6-8ft depending on what sort of cracking they're looking to do. I've made quite a bad video in this topic a couple of years ago and I thought about doing a better version of it. Turns out I don't need to as this one covers most of my thoughts on it as well. 👍😄

I wasn't happy with the 6ft, it was too fast. But the 9ft you showed looked too slow. I wanted more weight, and a little slower times.

Hi Nick, that's exactly the video I needed. Few days ago I built stock whip from your tutorial. It came out very nice, I also made custom wooden handle for it. But I feel like it's too fast for me, so I'm gonna build 6ft bullwhip as you suggest. I was looking for strand lengths on your website. In your recent bullwhip tutorial, you said that you are using 650 cord now, so are those lengths for 650 cord? Should I add few inches if I want to use 550 cord?

I started with a 10ft roo cause I figured I'd either learn or I wouldn't 🤷🏻‍♂️ I did and I'm glad. I bought a six-foot-one later and I actually don't ever use it because I hurt myself with it way more than I do the 10 ft whip. Everybody is different, but if ultimately you have a goal length you want to work with I recommend just starting with that length and building the muscle and the timing for that, because the timing is very different between sizes.

You made me a 8 foot nylon bullwhip and I found it similar to manage like one of my 6 foot leather bullwhips.
It's basically dealing with the weight.

Thank you much for explaining. I don't regret building a 9 ft as my first. What length is the rod in your 7 ft? I am considering using Adam's "bare bones" techniques, but plaiting the belly, and using a knot instead of the rubber cap. Will a 16 in steel rod act a bit like a hybrid? Again, thanks for your hard work and kindness.

Since the "action" is mostly linear in nature (since the "action" is actually a standing wave travelling a medium the maths behind the time you have is tied directly to the whips length. In theory: an 8 foot whip would take twice as long to crack then a 4 foot one...

Hi Dean, I have a habit of cracking whips more softly (maybe it's the fear of making my neighbors hate me more!), but I assure you they they are just as loud. Also I am using a lavalier mic, which does not pick up the sound of the whip well at all. I should have switched to the camera mic during the cracking. I'll do that next time, thanks for watching!

@@NicksWhipShop Ahh my apologies Nick. I love the work you do with these. Had an idea for you for a whip project video...
Take a look at the Whips that siren uses against raze in underworld. ?

I'm quite tall and was looking into 8ft as a first timer but this has convinced me otherwise. Would you get the same sound or is a longer whip's sound deeper?

Longer whips tend to be louder.generally

Are there equations for the cord lengths for making whips?

He does a video on that. I've made about 10 copying his videos. Each time I wrote down what I did as my lengths varied each time as I learnt, my paracord was not what he was using so I couldn't exactly copy his numbers and expect the same whip. You just got to make a few and work it out. Your plaiting wo t be anywhere like his to start.
