Portugal’s REMOTE Hidden Gem (The Hawaii of Europe)

  • On a whim we decided to pack our bags and head for what we heard was the "Hawaii of Europe". A remote island located in the Atlantic Ocean that is closer to Africa than to Portugal. THIS IS MADEIRA.
    While it's becoming more popular we were surprised that after 3 years of traveling full-time not one person has ever suggested or mentioned Madeira to us. There are cruise ships that come in weekly but other than that we found the island to be incredibly peaceful. The hiking, the views, the people, the food! It's all so beautiful and unique.
    We hope you will fall in love with this island like we have!

    We spent about six weeks in Madeira last winter and are planning to move there later this year. We are, likewise, amazed how few Americans know about Madeira. But the American expat community, though far outnumbered by the Brits, is growing. As much as we love mainland Portugal, Madeira is next level. So much to love, as you pointed out: Breathtaking scenery wherever you go, mild weather all year, friendly people, relatively cheap for an island out in the ocean. Plus, the infrastructure is great, Funchal bustles like a big city and - very important - it is not overrun frequently by drunk college kids that seem to go to every other European island of this ilk. Glad you enjoyed it. Now be quiet: We don’t want the other Americans to discover it . Yet.

    The video is beautiful, stunning and picturesque. Now stop telling everyone about Madeira. lol.
    We have made 3 trips there since 2017 and another planned early July 2024 and it is a magical place for us. We used to live in Hawaii and after landing here and looking out at the ocean while at the airport I said this feels like home in Hawaii. Glad you guy loved it. Did you go to Porto Santo?

    You are so lucky to be visiting the land of my ancestors! Madeira is truly a magical place. I hope to one day return, but in the meantime, I will enjoy it through your eyes. My family is from Funchal in the city.

    If you enjoyed Madeira, please look into the Azores. I think you’d really enjoy it as well. It’s just south of where you are. Definitely a must see. 🇵🇹🍻

      @brigidspencer5123 Před 3 měsíci

      The Azores are north of Medeira too close to the Mid-Atlantic ridge & connected under the ocean to Iceland. It’s why both areas are so prone to earthquakes. Which island is your family from? I’ve been to São Miguel, (also known as St. Michael’s & Ilha Verde), Santa Maria, Terceira and Flores.😊

      We stayed at the Flatio apartment we showed in the video we recorded last month (see below) in Funchal. We will be sharing our next accommodation in next weeks video which is through booking.com. We will also be putting out a video going over living expenses living there for a month in 2 weeks 😀

    Madeira has been on my list of potential destinations for some time now but just haven't gone due to the lack of sandy beaches.

    Actually...I think The Azores are the Hawaii of Europe. And there's even automatic transmission rental vehicles avail. Always a plus.
    Then there's the western side of The Algarve.
    Madeira, and the Azores and prob even the canary islands are all aparently heavily subsidised by the EU. That's what it's so affordable.
    But be careful if you go to the Azores or the algarve... You be figuring out how to stay. Except in the summer.

    I haven't been to Portugal, but I am so torn between Spain and Scotland. They are both such gems!
    This is a beautiful video. Since you like long hikes, there is one of RoamingWildRosie deeming a big trek on Madiera.

    Madeira is oldest than US country. In 1774, John Adams reported to his wife, Abigail, that after tedious days of contentious debate, delegates to the First Continental Congress would sit for hours “drinking Madeira, Claret, and Burgundy.” One year later, Thomas Jefferson famously toasted the signing of the Declaration of Independence with madeira.
