- Olivia and Nathan here! We rented a car and took a road trip around the entire island of Madeira! Definitely recommend this for a 3 or 5-day itinerary especially to explore the majority of the things to do in Madeira. This video is intended to give you a visual of many of the coastal cities you'll encounter as well as show you on a map where they're located! Roads are CRAZY in Madeira, so be prepared! Lighter cars tend to perform better!

Scary was for my brave ancestors who where heroes that come for the first time for this island. They were coragous people that's why maderian people are so resilient.

Archadas da Cruz was one of the best places I’ve been too! Really felt like I was transported to a time when the first settlers arrived on the island!

Visited quite a bit (or as much as we could) of Portugal in October last year…beautiful country, people, history and food. Did not have time for Madeira but planning to go to enjoy. Thank you for the view of the island and helping with our on plans

Awesome exploration and fantastic content!! My great great grandparents are from Madeira island... Family names are: "De Freitas", "Da Silva", "Botelho", and "Esperanza". They all moved to Hawaii back in the 1880's. Crazy that I only found your channel today, wish I found it sooner. You both are terrific!!

We used Sixt. I just recommend a lighter car that does better on hills. You can ask them and they will recommend some. If you are just 2 people you won’t have any problem

Another amazing video. Thanks for the tip about the Achadas da Cruz cable cars. Curious what car rental company you used? I read some mixed reviews about the typical U.S. car rental companies over there like hertz, enterprise, etc. Not sure if I should rent from Madeira Rent or Sixt… or do they charge extra for American tourists 🤔😂
I read a reply up higher on this feed where they mentioned using Sixt. I personally LOVE Sixt- have had great experiences with them this past year.

No it's not, it does have parking machines in Funchal and touristic places, most with coins. There are a lot of parking paid underground garages at the malls as well.

You would need a bigger car for sure but several places offer convertibles. Make sure you get a car that does well on steep hills, let them know you will really be driving around the entire island if you plan to do so. All the best, you’re going to love it! 🤘🏽
Hi Olivia and Nathan! My hubby and I loved this video of you all exploring Madeira! We have a question- we are heading to Lisbon mid August of this year and so far are planning to stay 2 nights in Lisbon, 2 nights in Sintra and have 4 more days after that. Do you guys recommend the last leg of the trip be in Algarve area or in Madeira. I was thinking Algarve until we saw this video- now we are thinking the quick flight to Madeira might be worth it(=

Madeira is the spot to holiday. hotels and car rentals can be pricey though.

Please please please may I ask a question? We're hoping to move to Portugal (possibly Madeira or somewhere near Porto), but we have two cats! My husband says it will be absolutely impossible to find a rental property that allows pets, unless it's mega expensive or charge a lot on top for the pets. What is your experience if you have any or noticed anything? I'm desperately wanting to keep my cats 😭 (both have passports, vaccinations, were from EU). Thank you ❤

We used Sixt but I would just look up which ones have high reviews and practical drop off points 👍🏽

Segundo, ouvi duas vezes Portugal. A ilha da Madeira tem governo próprio, bandeira, hino, parlamento, orçamento, tudo, leis, impostos, saúde, etc, tudo diferente de Portugal. Dizer que somos portugueses é apenas uma questão formal.

Madeira is a small island, 34 ish miles long, 14 ish miles wide. You can do road trips around the island but head back to the same accommodation each night.

Do not use Sixt Funchal airport a franchise owned by JAPrec rent-a-car read the reviews. Horrible experience.
How was parking at all the places. Debating getting a car….?
As a madeiran speaking.... Don't, really don't, just hire a guide and go in an " escursion ", renting a car here, roads are narrow, you're ALWAYS going up or comming down, and if you take the wrong turn... It can be a significant emotional event ( renting a taxy or a " tour group " is probably cheaper and not remotelly as stressfull
)
