Please take this video down or put it behind a paywall… if my wife and her family see this I’m going to be very busy.. ha ha…. Seriously nice build. I like your take on this..!
Lol thanks!
All these videos should be behind a pay wall. After the last fence picket project, I got down to the lumber store and half the pile was gone.
@omm2745 Your comment had me laughing.
My wife walked in and saw me watching this, sat down on the couch and actually got out a pen and paper and TOOK NOTES for a materials list. She then went to the bedroom, got on her YT account, looked up Matts channel and planned my next two weekends. I've only been watching Matt for a couple days. Really glad I found the channel but I'm afraid its gonna turn into a second job. Keep cranking out the videos Matt. Maybe I can use the builds as leverage....🤔
I was going to show my husband it lol
I enjoyed this build and built one for my wife. Now i have a few members of the family that want one.
You should have a place where we can upload pics of the things we build with your help.
Last year I built a similar item with a twist. Instead of a shelf on the bottom, I built a plastic lined wood water tank. I then got a very inexpensive solar water pump (usually used for bird baths) and ran a tube through the flower bed on top. All day, the water pumps up into the flower bed and then drains back down into the tank. Largest and best blooms I have ever had.
Awesome twist!
Nice, Thanks for the idea!
I watched this video then realized: I have enough spare wood that I saved from old projects to make this without spending a dime. I even had some old waste scraps of composite decking to use on the bottom of the box so it won’t rot out the bottom. Thank for this!
Perfect.
I've made outdoor planters with pallets that were going to scrap.
I saw another idea where they put PVC tube (cut lengthwise to serve as a water slide and out the side) across the middle shelf, then lined it so any water would drain to the tube and out, protecting the bottom shelf.
These are really nice. My wife watched with me, and you have convinced her to say make these for me. Lol. I appreciate how you don’t edit out things like the broken drill bit. For us long time woodworkers (30+ years and I’m 64) we all have done this very same thing.
Lol sorry about that! And thank you!
Suggestion: At about 3:1`4 you go through marking the center on all four sides of the rail. I have found an easier way to do this. Use a test piece, mark one and if it is correct, put a stop block at the other end and then all four will come out at that same point (midpoint) just by rotating the rail. You can make all the "points" with just one setting of the stop block.
I built two of the large planters and it cost me $240.😢 I used pressure treated 2x8s for the frame, cedar fence pickets where the dirt is and free pine for the bottom shelf. I also added a shelf on the side at the top for a work surface. I built these for Mothers Day and my mom was over joyed with them. Thanks for the plans.
This is my favorite build yet. I think they would sell very well. Really nice design.
Thank you. Enjoy!
Thank you for your guidance and inspiration. Your words, not your videos have pushed me to JUST START BUILDING after a very long time of not knowing where to begin. Its been a year of learning and testing my equipment as I am new to wood working, but comfortabe with any type of new equipment. Safety First, Safety Second, Safety Third.. My first project is making planter boxes out of OLD SHUTTERS. Hope to share the build with others and give back. U.S. Marine retired.
If only everyone had a table saw…
Nice build!
Man you just don’t ever stop and I’m glad. Thank you
I have a problem with stopping... or sitting still... or sleeping... lol.
I coated the inside of my planter with Flexseal clear. Surprisingly holds up really well. Really beautiful planters!
Great tip!
Great idea thanks JP!
Nice work.
Suggestion.
Seal the fence pickets inside and out.
Moisture will get trapped between the liner and the pickets leading to early failure.
Thank you!
What would you recommend to seal/paint?
@@crippledcrippled Acrylic Latex based stain and sealer.
Pick the brand and the color you like they are all about the same.
For rough cedar a semi translucent works well.
If you sand it down smooth a clear coat looks pretty cool.
These are gorgeous 😍 Thank you Matthew, you got my family going into woodworking & we are so excited 😂❤😂 Love your videos!!!
Awesome! Thank you!
@@MatthewPeechWoodworking Thank you man, seeing your kids inspired mine & they always have new idea's... it's a beautiful bonding experience & we owe it to your video's so keep up the AWESOME WORK!!!!
@MatthewPeechWoodworking, I am working on the 3 planters 2 benches and the 2 planters 1 bench. This will complete my set.
Thank you for always putting out top quality and instructional videos. Happy Sunday.
Thats so awesome! Have fun with it!
Beautiful upgrade to a picket project! With the bench planters, your backyard will shine ☀
Thanks for including the drill bit snappage. Feel your pain brother! Borrowing a line from my favorite rapper Akala, “Take shortcuts…get cut short. Long road, hard road but more sure.”
💯
I just took a picture of one of these i saw on a customers porch on Friday and was working out the build just before you dropped this video. Thanks for breaking it down Matt!
Wow that is wonderful looking and so much nicer looking than others I have seen out there.
Thanks!
I love hearing you teach. It’s prompted me to choose your design and build one for my husband (Fathers Day) who likes to garden in the back yard but nothing looks pretty like these planters!
Mathew, this is a very interesting project. Plus it's refreshing to know ,I'm not the only one that has a bad project day. Lol
Thanks for another great video Matthew and for the continued encouragement for all of us. I can't wait to get started on my next project.
Another awesome build and really appreciate you leaving in the things that can and most probably go wrong . Lol. Wife already saw the build and wanting a set now
Thank you to the crew and maybe you too for all that it's done ✔️
awesome work as always there matt keep up the good work
Thanks, will do!
I'm doing this build with a metal frame. 3/4" x 3/4" x 16ga. Sq. Tube. 1"x6" lumber for the boxes. Thanks for the great idea Matt!
Great idea!
What is the straight edge ruler with the gage that you use?@@MatthewPeechWoodworking
Mr. Matt I found your videos and now I am hooked!! I am a woman who's a jack of all trades and Master of All. But after seeing your videos especially the one building the concrete coffee table I can't get much done in a day because your videos are so funny 😂 and you make woodworking look seamless. Thank you for the ideas, inspiration, and the Crack up laughs.
I have learned to keep a pair of visegrips handy for when I break a bit off or need to remove a decking screw. I love your channel!
this project looks great. i bought Matthews plans yesterday and made the first of the 3 planters. his plans are very detailed and easy to follow. the only thing i have done differently is cutting the 1/2"rabbits in the rails. i still get that puckering feeling every time i see the small cutoff left between the blade and the rip fence. thanks Matthew for all the work and effort. best wishes
First of all, before the video is even done, I have to say, I appreciate that you are nothing if not predictable. Now on to the rest of the video. 😊
Love your channel. Just built these planters but put my own twist on it as you suggest.
Dear Matthew, thank you so much for everything. Would you have a video on how you manage the hours in your day/week? As mind-expanding as I'm finding the woodworking world to be, I'm contemplating sort of ahead of time (as I'm not yet established) how to tackle the management of a) many and varied ongoing projects with b) time/money/motivation ebbs and flows, within the context of the demands of regular life, and was wondering if there's inspiration to be found in what a 'day in the life/week' looks like for someone like you! Thanks again! Sarah
Made planters last year as one of my first projects. Now i want to remake them in this style lol. Or possibly the tiered one that goes against a wall. So many options!
Love, love, LOVE this!
Amazing! I build and sell a lot of your projects and I get tons of compliments on your designs! I can't wait to build this! Thank you so much for making these videos.
Awesome! Thank you!
Thank you Matthew
Have you thought about the tall planter for the inside corner of the three planter/two bench unit? My wife likes that idea.
Making the long one for my mom right now out of redwood :) Great video man. Thank you for the detail.
Always such great designs. Thanks, Matt. 😊
My pleasure!
Perfect “Mothers Day” project. It’s easy to just use a thick mil garbage bag/plastic liner stapled to the inside. Put a mulch layer down for the bottom 1/2 or so, top up with potting soil - not garden soil. Stick in a few herbs & geraniums, put a nice layer of mulch or sphagnum as the final layer.
Great idea!!
Sweet! love it!
awesome tip about the wider boards!
Glad it was helpful!
Hey Matt! Great tips on the wider material over the 2x4’s , looking good brother , love the project , skål 🍻
Absolutely awesome build! Fantastic, beautiful and so useful...
You are a master of the woodworking craft
Thank you!
I'm a big fan of the cedar and black trim look - very sharp. I have done the same thing with drill bits - in one case (I was so done that day) it became the screw. Good stuff Matthew!
Those are some great looking planters. My wife has been after me to make some for her, and these will look great on the patio. I heard the sound of that bit breaking, and I feel your pain on that one
Lol enjoy the build!
I love the look of those good job...I have to say your very good at explaining things just like Norm Abraham
i am glad you put a video out not them shorts thank you
Looking great!! Love this design and how easy you make it!
Blessings ❤
Thank you!
Been watching your videos a lot last little bit I hid surgery doing a lot better getting ready to try building a few things your videos help a lot keep up the good work
You never fail to deliver a fantastic video You so real and I can relate to your little build accidents Make the video so honest Tend to mess up when I rush
I so need me a bigger shop so I can have a decent work bench Started the ground work for my new shop that I am going to build my self I have to watch your video on a new shop Haven’t gotten to that one yet So want to add me a pocket hole jig to my tools Saving for it but want to get a laser cutter first Anyway keep up the great videos
A workbench helps... but I've worked off of everything. Before spending your money on a laser cutter decide which one you could make your money back the fastest with.
@@MatthewPeechWoodworkingI haven’t even started making anything to sell yet so I have plenty of time to worry about the laser I keep putting it off I made a cheese tray and a set of stackable fruit boxes which I liked a lot I want to perfect the boxes cause they are different than any I have seen Having trouble getting them like I want them I want them to be as close to perfect as possible
Man they look great
I so love this project!!
It's great for someone who has disabilities.
Great!
I would love to seen the installation of the inner fabric. Great build and looks beautiful.
Nothing to it really, just lay it in there and use a staple gun to tack it on.
Great project! Definitely will need to build one or two of these for myself. And I'll consider doing this when I retire to make some extra money (for more woodworking tools!)
I really like your idea's as well as your work, im glad I came across your channel. I love wood working and you inspire me with new idea's. thank you..........
Another awesome idea and video, thank you 😊
Glad you liked it!
Great video man......awesome job
Your insights and skills are impressive! I'm very glad I found your youtube place!! I've never had the type of mind skills you posess. I'm fully retired now and dispite health challenges am wanting to develop wood making skills to supplement my poor working mans retirement income. So thank for your abundant efforts to help others!! My miniscule budget forbids me being a patreon member though.
That is awesome. I’m starting it tomorrow.
Nice!
I love watching your videos i could honeslty watch them all day
Thanks so much!
OMG I LOVE THEM!!!!🥰🥰🥰
Thanks!
I like this one a lot. Nice job.
Thanks!
Nice build.
Love your projects brotha!!
Thanks!
Another nice project. That time of year, they should do well.
I think so too!
Matthew Peech...You Win !
Lol thanks!
They look awesome...I will definitely be getting these plans. I'm sure they will be as detailed as your others. Very well done!
Awesome! Thank you!
Another great build.
Thanks!
Do you not need drain holes in the bottom corners of this planter? I love the contrast of the black and the cedar too. Great design and build.
These are great looking boxes~!! Looks like I'll be busy this weekend. I need to stop watching your videos when my wife is in the room~! ;-) LOL
one of your best!
Im dieing laughing here. I had to slow down the speed here so i could grasp what your saying and now you sound like you bombed outta your mind. 😂. Besides that. Thank you for all that you do. Your a true inspiration. Your videos are top notch and your paper plans are too.
Awesome
needed that little bit of motivation at the end, on my way to create as i type thi-
Thanks!
Thank you so much. I Really appreciate it.
Great build!
Thanks!
Howdy 🤠
Happy Sunday
Morning!
Great video
Thanks!
I broke a 1/16th inch counterbore bit in white oak. I just left it there. Used that piece as a hammering block.
Lol probably a good idea.
Broke my Bosch #8 countersink/counterbore bit in my goat feeder, and #8 Bosch hinge bit installing shed door latch bolt pins above my head, both in pine by not being careful 🤦🏼♂️
Keep them coming man!I. I really like this idea, The black makes the cedar pop.
I would use cedar for everything,. Probably get some rough sawn 2 by material (which is 1¾ x 3¾) to rip the legs out of.
Yea for sure. It's just tough to find in a lot of places.
I forget that not everyone has access to Menards. Maybe double up some strips of 5/4 decking?
As usual, these are nice and different. Have you ever considered thinking through a design for a chuck box/patrol box for kitchen items while camping? I have been trying to work through designs myself lately, but your designs are always very thoughtful and functional. BTW.... I built one of your obelisks in under an hour the first time I did it. Thanks for that; my wife loves it.
Just broke my drill bit off in the leg...if I hadn't seen you do it, I would have hung up my hammer forever...Thanks for showing your mistakes so we know what happens in the real world!! ❤
Awesome build. Little accident, though. @16:34, your measurements for the holes are off from the plans. Should be 4½, 22½ and 33½.
Matt this is one of those builds that I just had to buy the plans for right away. Etsy for some reason won't let the plan for the teller planter download.
Message me on Etsy and we can fix it. Just “contact seller”
So you got jinxed by your camera man! Started when putting on you Mortal Combat mask. Then you dropped the boards. Bit came off, then broke! Dang camera man makes you nervous. This is all examples of what really happens sometimes in real life. Don’t forget the air compressor! Awesome build as always! Keep the mistakes as it makes you human and others see this and don’t get frustrated as bad because you did . Keep the builds and advice coming!
I’m not surprised that Kreg countersink bit broke on you. It’s junk, in my opinion. The one I have won’t stay together. Very disappointing. Every other Kreg application I have is dope. Really enjoy watching you. And you have motivated me to start working towards starting my own woodworking business.
Wow!!!!!!!!!!😮
These are amazing!! Curious what the cost was for materials and how much you would sell it for?
These are awesome! I watched the video and built one for my wife who posted it on FB and now I have orders coming in but I don’t know what to charge for them. 😂
What did you end up charging?
Do you have tutorials for planters with the privacy screen wall up behind it? The one with the horizontal slats?? I love your tutorials!!!
Could also lightly burn the legs and braces to weather proof it as well correct. I think they call it shoshugibon
What is garden felt? Does it hold the dirt and water properly while not drowning the plants?
BTW, another star video. Thx 💯
Love the real life mistakes! Happens to all of us!
That it does.
These are great (as always!). Any issue with the construction grade lumber rotting when exposed outdoors? Or does the paint help? 100% cedar would be lovely but expensive around here…
Hey! I really like your builds and have done quite a few!! On this one however, I have an issue that I’m hoping you can help with. The drainage from the top, if plantings are in it, would drop right down on the lower shelf. Any ideas on how to remedy that?
You didn't explain how you dealt with the bowing and the knot.
What I've found is that if you can cut your short pieces around the knot and exclude it, the bowing will straighten our. The unfortunate part in this is that you have to exclude the knot, which means you may lose more lumber than you intended.
But honestly? It's a small price to pay for what will end up as a straight board on either side of the knot.
I've seen so many people trash whole warped or twisted boards without considering the knots. Gorgeous wood they put in the burn pile. Made my heart hurt. I rescued it and fixed it, so free great wood!
Cut out the knot and let it sit flat for a day or two while laying flat. If you have to soak the wood and weigh it down, do it. The worst that can happen is that it still doesn't end up straight.
Still with a bend or twist? Use what's flat, or the flattest because you'll likely have to plane it anyway. Take out the worst stuff, see what straightens out, and deal with the slightly twisted, bowed, or cupped bits to see if you can flatten them. If you can't for the project you're doing because the measurements are wrong, save it for another project that doesn't require the depth you lost.
If you can't correct, or mill to use in another project, then the board was totally bad to begin with.
Great projects what type of paint did you use? How will they hold up outside in the weather? What do you recommend the sale price for these should be?
ANOTHER ONE!! in (my DJ Khaled voice)😁🤩
Lol
