- What's Happening Everyone! In this video I build planter boxes for pressure treated 4x2 and 6x2 lumber. These are a simple build with a super strong construction. The design can be adapted to any size you can make them entirely from 4x2's if you want. I do not have a cutting list as you can make them to suit the space you have.

I’m still watching for two reasons: you have a great voice, and you said it would be simple, with only a miter saw. You have my attention, and hopefully I’ll do your build. Back to the vid…
A project that most people can make without needing ridiculously expensive tools like so many other you tubers who seem to forget their audience. New subscriber here 👍
Exactly
Maybe you weren't paying attention, (obviously)... he mentioned you could use other types of saws that could be used to include the hand saw for all of you unsuccessful, unskilled, low wage leftist viewers making ridiculous, unnecessary comments who no doubt also would have complained how long the video was because he did it as you poor, unsuccessfuls at life will have to do them, the rest of us who didn't make poor life choices, knows that electric saws are not "ridiculously expensive" at all, What happened to you two?
@@easygoing302 What happened to you in life for you to be so angry and bitter? Like WTF? I feel sad for you, must be hard getting through each day.
Very true!!
Yeah it is ridiculous, you start watching a DIY project and they use 30 tools in the first 3 minutes.
Quality. Exactly what I'm needing to build for my garden.
"Yes my legs are very white I'm a ginger-haired Irish man what other colour would they be, so lets crack on" Hahahaha XD
❤
Your legs are better than some I've seen! Great planters you've made!
Greetings from Germany. Now that the last of the snow is gone I can finally spend some time in the garden.
Been building shelving and work benches like this for years. Simple but effective and very sturdy. Never thought of doing the herb and veggie garden boxes in the same manner… great idea. Built a couple today and made a corner unit to join them, turned out great.
Very impressive, I am sure they will last for years.
I like those planting beds perfect
Fantastic project, brilliant craftsmanship and skill, loved it 👍👍
The algorithms are scary! Had just said to wife I wanted to build planters all over front driveway. I've never had planter vids pop up before nor have I searched for them. This is perfect and perfectly timed out of the blue. Thanks!
google nest is listening to you...
@@copeyhagen4249 and your phone service provider, Amazon, Facebook, any app you download, your emails, text messages, your ISP, bank records, geographical data, and even your grocery rewards cards. But hey, at least we get relevant videos recommended to us 🤷♂️
I just searched planters and got here organically. It can happen!!
So glad my phone listened to me lately... Happy to see your build in my feed today. Ready for the summer project!! Cheers!!
THANK YOU! This is super easy and I appreciate your explanation. I will be building them very soon.
I loved it I will be happily building this week end with the onslaught of spring next week
Great stuff. Really thorough, helpful, easy to follow. I'm gonna use all of this and make a box just a bit shorter. Really appreciate the explanation of the design / gap for the 2 x 6 ends. Thanks!
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks, simple design, but look amazing, thanks for sharing
Absolutely love the video; especially your teaching style. I'm getting ready to build several of these raised garden beds and your 'how to' video has definitely put me at ease.
Thanks for this! Great design and easy to build.
Great simple design and construction! You’ve inspired me to give it a go
I built a 3ft x 6ft planter for my mother and she loves it!!! Thanks John
I just got through building one without a bottom. I'm thinking of building another one. I been watching so many videos about building wood planters. This video is far the best, Thank you!
Just bought my first Mitre saw. This will be my first project once the weather gets a bit warmer.
Perfect for a house warming gift for family! Thank you for making me look good. I can put labor of love for family. 👍 New subscriber.
Update 5/1: Success! I did all the cutting in one evening; packed the car and roadtrip with just a few tools and screws. Built in hours and shared a beer! I'm sending U a beer. Cheers from New Mexico!
Thank you once again Green for your tips and details, much appreciated.
Solid Gold!!!. No messing about - simple and Clever.
This one is the gangsta of diy flower beds. You rock. Your awesome. Stay safe
Just what I’m looking for!
Simple is best!
They look great will definitely make a couple for the patio. Will put a smile on the wife's face.
Great video! You're very easy to listen to and the planters look awesome! I'll be building a few of these over the next couple of weeks! Thanks again!
Just got through building 3 of these boxes love how they turned out. Thank you for sharing.
You are welcome!
Thank you for this!! I made one 8ft long. From start to finish 1 1/2 hour. So easy. The results are absolutely beautiful!
You are most welcome! Glad it worked for you.
Great job John. It really helped that you provided visuals AND explained as you went along. I can’t wait to get to work. Thanks again.
No problem glad it was useful
These are perfect to make as my patio border! Thanks for the how-to-tutorial!
Glad you like them! check out my planters with the bench seat too!
I freakin love this guy. Awesome project, will be making two for the lady soon
Nice work John. I just replaced stair stringers on my deck that were put in seven years ago. About 1/3 of the pressure treated lumber rotted because I never sealed it...big mistake. Your planters look great but I would paint them. I live in Massachusettes and the seasons can raise havoc on unsealed wood. I definitely like the job you did on the planters..
Well done John great job.
Very Nice John, love the way you construct them.
👍👍👍
One of the simplest planter instructions I have seen for anovice like me. Great vid thanks
Cheers John, built 2 using spare decking
Ty bud I made an 11 foot mitre station after your video works awesome going to give the planters a try keep it up
I used scrap wood for mine, but used your design. Turned out great! Thanks for the clear instructions and well-done video.
Nice! Always good to recycle.
Love this! thanks for sharing John
Nice planters, easy to follow instructions. I make my planters from large plastic boxes. On the outside of the plastic box, I attached 4 x 2 , cut to size, and clad in Pressure treated Shiplap, and top off with a 6 x 2 mitre cut. Add draining holes, and some rocks stones in the box to aid drainage
Great video John thanks
Made similar with decking boards but leg supports inside never thought of this design so simple and so much more professional you live and learn, however to save rot at feet small cuts of roofing felt.
This was my first time watching you. Thank you for showing us how to build boxes. I'm wanting to build some planners for my wife and I wasn't sure where to start and your instructions were very simple and I appreciate that. Plus I really enjoyed your excitement of doing what you're doing. That was fun to watch. I'm sure there's others out there that can make comments about the way you do things but as far as I'm concerned you did a great job and you help me start out with the basics and thank you.
You are most welcome
That is one quality product - well done JMc.
That flat base really does help, my shed floor is up, down and all over the shop.
Just built 3 today for school with 4x2 and 6x1 for walls. CZcams has its uses. Thanks alot
Very nice as a beginner at woodworking your build is something that I would like to make for the yard, thanks for sharing.
I make mine exactly the same way apart from my timber is premium 140mm wide decking board, and I rip a board in half to make the legs in the same way as yours but I biscuit joint mine to eliminate screw holes... enjoyed your video.
I've built a few of these with and without pocket holes on the bottom.. the ones without pocket holes seem to crack the wood when it dries out a bit, but it doesn't hurt it structure wise and it's hidden on the bottom. great video.. great presentation and content ;)
If you can clamp and then pre-drill a hole into the section that will be receiving the screw it may reduce the cracking from the screws pressure.
I'm a wheelchair user so obviously bending down to the ground to plant stuff isn't the easiest thing to do, unless, like me, you can get out of your chair and sit on the floor, raised flower beds like this are great for that situation, and they look good.
Cracking idea... gonna give this a go myself I think
Absolutely fantastic!
Thanks John these look so sturdy exactly what I’ve been looking for in a idea
No problem Adam. Glad it was useful.
Looks really nice!
Love, love, love this box..made one 41" long for smaller area and have been contracted to make one for sale...yay
Many thx...imma builder...lol
Brilliant! I'm glad it was a useful video.
Built a slightly smaller version - brilliant having seen it done first. Very helpful, thankyou, but I never realised how heavy it would be once built and needing to be installed in the garden!!
Thanks. Will do here in Canada. Very helpful.
Great video have made something very similar. I used urinal drains from screwfix in th uk. Put some gravel around them, work great for drainage.
I just got done recycling part of a shed into three garden boxes and the same day you post a garden box video, almost in sync. Nice proportions those will look great.
Great minds think alike. Lol
Those planter boxes caught my eye for the simple reason that I made those planter boxes in early 2017 out of pallets and I planted some asparagus plants in them. The planter box and the asparagus are still going strong after so many years.
Thanks for producing a video that is simple to understand.
Pressure treated is absolutely the incorrect product for planters designed to produce food for human consumption. Natural or cedar is the only safe means by which to construct a garden planter for the production of food. Basic stuff......
@@dennisjohnston2914 That's the real reason for the liner - to prevent treatment chemicals from leeching into the soil.
Great design and build. These are great for keeping the rabbits out too.
Great build. I would have humbly suggested that you add a brace in the center of each planter towards the top to prevent them from bowing out. They are very stout “as is” but moisture, the sun, and hot and cold cycles can do a number on most outdoor wooden builds. Thanks for sharing!
Really enjoy your channel. The tutorials are not too long and offer great, detailed information and instruction. Great stuff, thank you.
Glad you like them!
Brilliant. Loved the video, well explained. Planters look awesome. Thanks.
All in half a days work :) - looks awesome
Great Build!!!!!
This might be a bit off topic, but you have a beautifully lit shop. The lighting is evenly distributed, and even the shadows are well lit. Speaking as one who's shop is all raking shadows and inky recesses, I am envious. Great project/video btw.
Great video
Everything you need to know and nothing you don't need to know.
great stuff! Going to build these next week. Thanks for the video 🙌
Really nice when lumber prices come down I'm going to build them.
Modified the dimensions a bit but made these following this video and they came out amazing! Thank you so much. Looks great outside my business.
Nice! I'm glad the video was helpful
You have two middle legs.......
Thank you for this project. I’ll be building smaller versions for my son’s new home!
Really fantastic work, John!!! 😃
A gardening tip: put a layer of about 5cm of small rocks on the bottom of the planters to help with drainage. Also, mix some sand with the compost, so it won't become muddy. 😊
Stay safe there with your family! And have fun! 🖖😊
Thanks
Thanks. Really understand how to build these from this video. I will get to work.
You are welcome, glad it was helpful.
Something extra to add based on two box planters I assembled, if you want to add a little airflow so the butted wood doesn't hold onto moisture, put a 1-2mm spacer between each slat. It will break up the look of the sides and add an interesting visual element while allowing the air to carry out any water between the wood. And if like me you built them to take a container they will add a few mm clearance for the top sleeves.
Do you have a rough diagram? I like the idea for my first EVER build.
Best DIY for planters I've seen yet. Thanks!
Glad you liked it!
Excellent “kit list” at the beginning of the video, really helpful.
Glad you think so!
I was recently given a load of used decking that had been treated regularly. A quick power wash and it's good to go. This is the perfect use for it. Love the presentation.
Today I built a planter box with different dimensions (5'x2'). Thank you so much, ths exactly what I wanted to create, the video was very helpful.
Great I'm glad you found it useful
This is great! Thanks!
Best DIY I’ve seen for a planter box. All others use super expensive tools. Nice and simple enough for me to try out myself. Thanks!
Glad you found it useful!
I agree!
I liked your editing in this one. More showing along with the telling. They look great! Please show us an in-place picture on a video too... Instagram doesn't agree with my lifestyle. :) I hope you enjoy your beer. I like a cold stout after working in the shop, myself.
Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge!
You are welcome.
Great video! Beautiful planters!! TY!!
Great video John. Well explained. They look great and quite sturdy. 👌👍
Thank you John, that'll be my summer project!
Glad it was useful Nicolas.
Really like this, I'll be making them when it warms up a little. Thanks!
You are most welcome
Just built the first of three planters today following your instructions. They look superb! Many thanks for this video
You are very welcome!
Just build a 10' version of this planter box today. Thanks for the great video!
I so glad the video was helpful!
Thanks so much exactly what I was looking for my wife's garden
I'm glad it was useful.
Great video. Very easy to follow. I made a large (2.4 metre long) box and it already has been planted and in use.
Glad it was helpful
Thank You! I used your video to build the exact box yesterday. Even if I could post a pic, it'd be pointless - it's your box at my house ;-) Thanks again!
Excellent. This will give me inspiration to start my little project. Great job.
Great job!
such a great video, and seems very easy to follow!! im new to this sort of stuff and want to have a go at building my own planters like this when i redo my garden so i can plant fruit trees in them. they are perfect for what i want, i wanted longer ones like these too to go all the way along my side garden wall with a trellis behind.
Excellent video and it looks great. The wood at the top to hide the polythene adds to the superb finish. I noticed you had cut the top wood diagonally so they fit together which was not shown in the video. I want to make a bench with a square planter either side and this has been a very helpful video.
I built two of these planters from salvaged lumber. I painted them to match the house and filled them with a variety of herbs. Around dinner time I’m frequently seen on the patio with a pair of scissors.
Very easy build and so well worth the effort!
Fantastic!!
l built some long plant boxes years ago to grow Herbs, but what l did extra was to put dividers into it to stop plant like mint spreading and taking over the box.
