Off Grid Log Cabin: Recycled Pallet Wood Project - Roof Extension & Sink

  • The Log Cabin Build continues. We use Recycled Pallet Wood to build a wood roof at the back of the off grid cabin in the wilderness. Being able to use recycled materials to make simple and cheap diy projects is a useful skill to have and it helps to save money. So far the Log Cabin itself was free to build. It is heated with the woodstove, which is great for the cold winter months where temperatures drop below freezing.
Although the Cabin looks might look like a shack on the outside, we've turned this primitive hut into a cosy tiny house on in the inside. With a rustic wood chair, folding table, raised bed as well as a woodstove and a book case. It also has candles, lanterns and other items that make it a one-man rustic cabin.
The day started out with me alone in the woods. I got the woodstove going and made a cup of fresh coffee to start the day. Dad then joined me and together we began building work on the wilderness homestead. We opened some more subscriber gifts and answered some of the questions that you guys have been asking us in previous pallet wood cabin episodes. I hope to spend more time at the cabin to practice primitive technology, wilderness and survival skills and learn more about living off the land and foraging for wild food.

you should tighten the screws in the corner brackets evenly, as in screw all of them in half way then do the rest. It can bend the brackets or even the screw and sometimes strip them

I've been watching this series and it's been enjoyable. When I was a little girl, he built me a log cabin play house and he took me with him to get the wood, he let me hold the boards still while he cut them and he taught me how to pound nails. I know it's been a couple years since you did this, but the memories you're making with your dad will be special for a life time. I'm 54 now, but I still remember that time with my dad like it was yesterday. Thank you for sharing this with us.

I can't believe it but I've just spent the whole of Saturday evening watching you and your dad turn your idea of a one-man cabin into reality!! Altogether it was a lovely constructive way to spend time with your dad, who I think is a lovely man. I remembered, as a child, having to help my father extend our tiny kitchen and we had to recycle the bent nails, corrugated iron panels and wooden beams, just like how your dad did! I have always enjoyed bushcraft and survival programmes but your videos have taken it to a different direction. And that stove is a work of art! But best of all is the antique coffee grinder. What a lovely present from your mum 🤗
Thank you so much for posting your hard work.

  • @themainc
    @themainc Před 6 lety +6

Hard to describe what I'm trying to say so bear with me.
I was born in Australia and have lived here all my life. Our winters are about 10 degrees (Celcius) and our summers are about 46 degrees (again, Celcius). I apparently saw snow once as a baby (and don't remember it) and we have no forests here (just dry, scraggly bush).
I read a LOT and the stories were usually set in snowy, quiet, isolated forests. There was a sort of sense of, it was an old world. You lived a simple life, close to the ground. Hard but on your own terms. I guess you could say there was something.....mystical, the feeling I'd get reading these books.
You might not think the English forest is particularly magical and you might think a pallet wood cabin is nothing to write home about. But I don't know. Watching this series gives me the same sort of feeling those old novels did.
Now excuse me while I melt into the footpath.

Time with dad. Priceless. The last time I saw my father alive was in the woods. He had advanced dementia, but when we went into the mountains of Colorado for a day he was transformed. Lucidity returned and we could converse about old times. Sadly, or mercifully, he died of a heart attack a week after our last outing. Those are memories that bring a lot of comfort. BTW. Your dad is a pisser:). You're lucky to have him. Peace.

Here is a 'poser' for your Dad. When we both were growing up there was a Polish song in English about a missing sausage. I have changed the lyrics.
"Who carved my Kuksa, who carved my Kuksa? Who carved my Kuksa: who made it look like that?
Metal cups just burn my lips; the Kuksa's kind to finger tips.
For coffee cup it does quite nice; for soups and stews--worth any price.
Should you have a taste for 'treen' the Kuksa suits just like a dream...(well, you get the tune by now.)

I used to fish and work and just have a great time with my dad when I was young. Unfortunately I didn't really know or understand what I had at that young age. My dad passed from stomach cancer about six months before my daughter was born. I was 26 years old and didn't really grasp the concept of what life was gonna be like withput my pops.
Keep doing what your doing and stay as close to your parents as you possibly can. Your dad seems like a really cool guy and both of you seem like you really enjoy hanging out with each other.

Love the series. I am inspired to keep my dream of building my own house one day and live in the outdoor. Also love your Britishness. Spent 13 Years in London and you two remind me of what I love best about the British people. Keep the series alive. Loving it! What could be good but challenging on a budget: 1) Solar or wind power. 2) rain water system to have fresh water on site.

Nice video as always, thinking about what your dad said l am about his age and remember no handys, no car, and we all sat in the dining room with the wood fire on listening to radio mum was knitting and dad was making little things for us to play with, no tv and all day outside in the forest or riding our put together from bits bikes l am so proud and happy to have lived through these times. Regards Barrie Watson

I'm completely enjoying this process. Who wouldn't want to make a "clubhouse" in the woods? I know I have since I was a small child. The challenge of making it at little cost, forces your creative juices to keep flowing! Thank you for sharing!

Hmm, all them candles and cones, I thought it was cabin on broke back mountain :D What's next millions of pillows on the bed? :P
Nice one, maybe you can make a composting dunny next to the sink (with curtain for the shy types) as a future project. Pallet wood box + bucket topped of with and old toilet seat & lid so you don't get splinters!

Those are really nice additions to the pallet cabin. It's really pimped out now. What sort of provision will you make for Jaxx to stay with you? I miss seeing him.
