Off Grid Cabin in the Forest - Roast Chestnuts, Woodstove (Camp in the Woods)

  • We head to our off grid cabin in the forest to roast chestnuts on the woodstove and spend time at the camp in the woods. The off grid pallet wood cabin looks great amongst the trees in this area of the forest. We raised up the porch floor on a foundation of engineering blocks to prevent damp from reaching the cabin. It finally feels like the fall is here, as the leaves turn there autumn colours and the air is cooler and fresh. We decide to get the camp fire going using some logs from the bushcraft camp which is nearby. We boil the kettle and get some fresh English tea on! We're looking forward to using this cabin as a site where we can both spend time together learning bushcraft skills, improving survival skills and learning more about self sufficiency and wilderness living. I am looking forward to doing an overnight camp here soon. Thanks for joining us on the adventure! Please subscribe if you enjoyed it :)

I’m watching this and I can’t help my eyes from swelling & tearing up. Watching you talk, laugh & spend time together with your father. What was boy to man is now man to man, but we all retain that boyish charm when around our fathers and always learn something from them. My father & I were very close & great friends. I miss days like this so much... thank you for bringing that happiness back to me again even if only through great memories. Keep spending time together while you can, life is precious & short.

Depends on the relationship , my father & I dont talk but that is because he is one of the most introverted people on the planet. We respect one another and mind ourselves but we dont talk. Different folks, different strokes.

Boiled chestnut with milk is a very folky breakfast in Asturias (North of Spain). You peel them and boil them with a bit of salt until they are soft. Then you just warm milk with a little of honey and throw them inside like cereals. Plenty of energy for a day in the woods!

My Dad used to raise the larger chestnuts yall have there; he had 2 chestnuts trees in the front yard. They would roast them, peel them & chop them fine & add them to stuffing for Thanksgiving. They tasted so good in the stuffing! That was a fitting meal, chestnuts & then the cake that the lady made; the cake looked really good too, with jam in between the layers. You 2 seem like best friends; I think that's nice, when the son grows up, for him to have that close relationship with his Dad. Thank you both for sharing this wonderful video; I really enjoyed the interaction between you both, the best. 😊🙏💖 It's a shame we can't roll the clock back, where there wasn't so many people having cars; horses were a far better idea because they got us where we wanted to go & they didn't cost as much to feed & then they gave us fertilizer for our crops & much nicer to look at than any car! lol

Another TOTALLY ENTERTAINING video! I think I'm about the same age as you Graeme, and a lot of the things you mention in your video's bring back lots of memories. you talking about chestnuts takes me back to my childhood in the fifties. My family lived in Smethwick, on the outskirts of Birmingham and my married sister went to live in Rubery, near Bromsgrove on the outskirts the other side of Birmingham, in a new housing estate that had been built there. Every so often I used to go into Birmingham with my mom shopping on a Saturday, and we used to meet my sister there. You know, mother and daughter "shopping and catching up on the news", etc. We would then catch a number 63 bus to Rubery and spend an hour or two at my sisters' house and have tea there. Afterwards we would walk back down to the 63 bus stop and catch the bus back into "town" (that's what everyone called birmingham City Centre!). While we arrived in Brum we waited at the bus stop near to Snow Hill railway station to catch a number 74 or number 75 bus, there was always a guy there with an oven on wheels like a cart, 2 wheels and a handle. It was powered by coal and he used to sell baked potatoes and roast chestnuts. While we waited for a bus my mum used to treat me to a bag of chestnuts or if they weren't ready it would be spuds. the guy used to sprinkle a pinch of salt over them. The good old days.Sadly, my mother passed away 2014 aged 102. The memories stay with us though, don't they? Keep up the good work (just watched the video at St Audries, what a laugh you are!)

I remember collecting chestnuts as a child in East Sussex and they were so big that you could only hold two in your hand. The reason they're now small is because as the trees age, the nuts gradually reduce in size. We, the older generations, collected too many of them and there are now no new trees to replace the ageing ones. My favourite recipe for chestnuts is to boil them with Brussels Sprouts and bacon.

There is more pollution created by the production of the car, than would ever be produced by the use of the car . The older the car the more environmentally friendly it is.
Happy thanks giving from Mudge Island, B.C.
The Autumn goes for a couple of months around here, its totally awesome :-)

I have bought roasted chestnuts from street vendors in NYC in the past, but they always tasted burned. I had better luck in Seville, they were roasted to perfection. Although my favorite is marron glacé. Yummy!!! Love the relationship between the two of you. I wish I could have had a piece of that Victoria sponge, it looked delicious.

Only ever have chestnuts in stuffing at Christmas. You’ve inspired me to try them another way! Don’t have a fix for pollution, but ‘Show Us Your Steak!’ and maybe we can help men’s mental health. Cheers.
