Building an Off Grid Cabin for Free to Save Money - Woodstove & Pallet Wood Bed

  • The Off Grid Pallet Wood Cabin is really developing now that the roof and Front Porch are done. Now it is ready to have the Woodstove put in to keep the Tiny House warm in the cold winter months. We also use more free recycled Pallet Wood to build a raised bed in the one-man Cabin. Using the stove we boil water for soup and cook up some food on the stove. Closing the door on the Cabin it got really warm and next time we hope to put a thermometer inside to track the temperature.
    There are still plenty of jobs to do though. We need to chink the walls, perhaps with a primitive style of moss and clay, although there isn't much of that around so we might use materials from our garage. We also need to fill in any holes in the roof, add a chair to the porch and a small chair and table in the Cabin. It is now ready for me do some overnighters in and I'm really looking forward to this.
    Thanks to all who have watched this Primitive Cabin build by father and son. It's been a great Wilderness Project so far and we have done it all for free to save money. An awesome DIY project!

    It isn't a PROPER cabin WITHOUT BOOKS!!!!! That your Dad went to the trouble to make a corner bookshelf (and the fact that he has caught and prepared squid for your dinner on several occasions - amid cups of mulled wine), tells me he is a man of ultimate refined taste. This is 'roughing it' at it's finest - hats off!!

    Loving that hot water stove attachment! Your dad is the man, love his wit. "The man is in control of the family thermostat." Tell it to my kiddo. Ha ha. Side note... 8 ft x 5 ft is just about the size of a jail cell in the US.

Ooooooooh, it's an even nicer stove than I previously thought. Yeah, I want this stove. I really want this stove. Can I get this stove? I can get this stove. This is an incredible stove. I love this. I've both laughed and cried. The father reminds me so much on my own father who has passed away. He kept everything in case it would come in useful. No matter what we needed he could find in his shed. He kept all the nuts, bolts, screws etc. in jars and tubs and he could turn his hand to anything. I have subscribed to your channel.

    What you guys are doing, reminds me of in my early forties. I bought a house, and put a new roof and stuff on it.
    After that money was short, and my dad, who has gone now, and myself decided to extend the front of the old shed and make the rest waterproof. We just used recycled materials from the scrap pile from the house.
    It was the best time we had together....problem solving and doing it as a team. I recomend this sort of thing to any father and son

    You should make a little table for the stove so you don't have to crouch down to refuel and a little table for plates and drinks to sit on that easily be put away. Outside you can make a small shed to keep coats, hats, and tools. Keep this project up, In MI we have about 2 ft of snow but I'm a similar shelter but bigger by a little and a wooden inside roof!

      Apparently you've never heard someone from Lancashire speak "English". Ask an Italian how to say pasta, and tell me if the Americans or the Brits are closer to proper pronunciation. Anyway, the English language is already a butchering of Middle German with a bunch of Latin influence, hence the inconsistent grammar. Also, the "southern" Appalachian American accent is closest to what the first wave of European immigrants would have sounded like i.e. English.

    i’ve been thinking of building my own cabin out of recycled materials on my dad’s property so that when I am of age and i’m not quite ready to buy my own house, I can still live by myself and be close to my family. Your videos have given me a lot of information on how to save money and repurpose materials! i really enjoy this channel! thank you both!

    Be it a simple cabin or a shed,I love the idea's you have come up with. and building it with free materials well that's just great. The wife may not like the idea bt this next summer I plan on a simular shed for my side yard. And a word to the wise. Stay close to your Dad , time is short and bonds like yours last for ever.

    When I was a kid, my father always had me straightening nails and reusing them and nuts and bolts and screws. He had big tins of assorted fasteners. To this day, I always pick up screws and bolts I find while walking around and making my own big tin of all sorts. Cherish this time with your pops!

    Hello!I got to missing you guys after 2 weeks and I am back after this'n'that. Now I have some free time to "hang-out" with you two.I really appreciate the easy camaraderie of you two, it kind of reminds me of my father, who taught me carpentry & other handyman skills. He's been gone for 8 years & we miss him.Meanwhile, life is mighty fine here in SW Virginia, USA, near the Blue Ridge Mountains. We got 1 & 1/4" of snow this morning, which will probably melt tomorrow or the next day! Hopefully whatshisface up in the world-capital-wannabe won't screw up our planet too much, and we'll all still be here for many years to come!Happy Trails...

    Cannot wait to learn how the Pallet Palace compares to Badger's Rest as a cold overnight camp! Neither place is particularly insulated as yet and each will have its own charms. Your Dad's touches to the bed just about knocked me out of my desk chair: a headboard...and finials, yet.

    I would definitely put some tin on the floor and walls around the wood stove. That stove is little but it is really close to your wall. Your first really cold night in there, when you have the stove roaring for 8-10 hours straight and the front door closed, you will be surprised how hot that wood wall near the stove will get. I'd hate to see you lose your little cabin, or worse. Another option would be some brick or stone. You would actually improve the performance of your stove a bit more if you built a little stone or brick hearth under it, because the masonry doesn't just protect against fire, it absorbs heat and then radiates it back out slowly, which helps to keep the temperature even.

    • @Wolfyjinny
      @Wolfyjinny Před 6 lety

      This worries me too, I have a rocket stove outside next to a pallet wood fence, well it was next to the fence until i realised that the fence was bubbling as the moisture in it started to vaporise, those little wood burners can churn quite a lot of heat out and the flash point of pallet wood is only about 300 Celsius, with good ventilation into the firebox the stove walls can hit about 600c in about 1/2 an hour.

    • @TAOutdoors
      @TAOutdoors  Před 6 lety +1

      trustbuster23 thanks for the tip, we will look into a solution

    • @Wolfyjinny
      @Wolfyjinny Před 6 lety

      Just a bit of old tin roof with an air gap between the stove and the walls is a simple solution, maybe some slate or a bit of tin on the floor too, I know you are trying to not spend any money on this project so if you can find some clay on the property you could daub the wall and make a pad under the stove.

    Hi Mike. I really like this series. To build such a cool Cabin together with your father is a great experience for sure and incredibly valuable for the relationship. The oven is fantastic and make the cabin very romantic. Only the canopy did not eat the beautyness with the big spoon :-D Greetings from Switzerland
