- I took the EP-133 K.O. II around NAMM 2024 to sample sounds from some awesome musicians playing their instruments, straight into the KO II using the on board microphone! After the show was all done, I took the sounds back to the studio to see if I could make anything with the sounds that we got. This was beyond fun and shout out to everyone who I sampled. iIf you see yourself in the vid let me know down below!

Now this is how you make a NAMM video, I love it.
Rhett! Just saw your Revstar video. You still using it regularly?
Wait…Rhett Shull dropping in on a Ricky Tinez video!? Worlds colliding!! How rad.
I don't think that was just any dude playing that Otamatone, but it was THE dude from Maywa Denki that invented it, Nobumichi Tosa. You should look him up, his creations are wild!
It was the DUDE.
WHOA! I ended up staying for his performance way longer than expected too haha, now it all makes sense
If it sounds good….🤷🏾♂️
Hey Ricky, there's a slightly faster way to change velocity sensitivity on the fly: Hit SHIFT+ERASE to enter system, then type a 3-digit code and hit enter. Velocity OFF is 300, HI is 301, and Lo is 302. It's not as good as a dedicated button but you don't have to read menus.
Yo now that's a big brain shortcut right there thank you!
Great example of how powerful and flexible the KO II can be as a portable sampling device.
I have learned so many undocumented features that make the ep-133 that more intuitive and fun to use. For example When you hit the FX button and the A,B,C or D you can mute but then you can let go of the FX button and use other buttons like tempo on a sample to repeat or turn the FX delay/reverb knobs. Its so much more freeing to fingers once you engage a button and the counter button you can let go of the first button.
wow! I'm really impressed by the quality of the microphone!
Same! Was expecting quite a lot of background noise / folk milling about, but there’s not a bit of it! (well, apart from the sax sample 😊)
SAME! and I only ever really pointed the power button at what I wanted to sample or the back of the device. it picked up stuff super well!
same!
Bro you and your channel never bore me! What a delight you are to all us gear heads. 🥂 🙏
For manual chop - wait for the sample to play through once and then you can press the pads and the sample will start from the beginning - great video thanks 🎉
Been waiting for another koii vid from you. This one didnt disappoint. Dope
Nice..Thanks for sharing your experience. Plus using the KO2 in the field was dope 👍
In these trouble times... your creativity is much appreciated!
U Da MAN!! Keep Pumping & Teaching!!💪🏾💯
I love my KO2, it’s such an inspirational piece of equipment for whatever I’m feeling, wherever I’m feeling it. So cool to see you use it like this.
Ricky, you are so talented and inspiring! I loved watching you produce this piece of music!
That's fun watching you be creative❤ thanks for the musical inspiration😎
Hello Ricky. I'm a big fan of yours. You're super cozy to watch. I've seen your videos closely. You show us in a calm and relaxed way how to make music. Thank you for your work. ❤🇩🇰
Love the looseness/ groove of this track!
I love it, best video about the event.
Namm just encourages my GAS, this is a much cooler approach.
I kind of wish you'd sampled some guitarists though, two of my favourite musicians were there but we strill! :D
I doubt it would've fit in with your jam so, I'd be just Stanning to see some of my favourites together.
Best and most creative KOII tutorial I’ve seen.
Can you throw together some B-roll footage of Namm? Would love to see a vlog of your time there
Sweeet,You cruisin now & havin fun by the looks.😊 Bet most workflow issues can be worked around, more updates and hardware in the EP series to come, win win,can only get bettah. Thanks for the Knowledge thanks for the Vibes.👏🤝✌
Loved this little Jam from NAMM 👌🏾
Sounds like some jet set radio music and I’m here for it
blown away by the mic but even more how you remember where everything is on all these devices.
Hallo Ricky, Nice idea to take the KO with you to sample! I bought mine for the ecact same reason. To simoly sample outside. Somehow I am Bit getting used to it. Didnt find the sweet spot. Either recordings are distorted a.f. or recordings starting to late. 🤷♂️ … and they should change Firmware that you can choose to preselect a sample slot (arm) and *then* press record. Thanks for the Inspiration. Cheers from Berlin
Isn't it about time for something like this from Elektron? I.e. a portable, battery-powered sampler groovebox with the Elektron workflow? Digitakt mk2 in plastic, meant to be carried around. Stereo sampling, polyphonic, with a granular synth machine. Make it happen, please! 🙏
Dope!
Music is music is music. LOVE your channel, Ricky. You’re a “dope” musician!
TE should pay you for this ! great jam / tutorial time !
Very nice man, super dope
Felt the same about the seqtrack, woaw it was an amazing idea to sample stuff at Namm also I’m sorry but the mic quality of TE gear are amazing! Sounds do good!
Awesome 👏🏿😎
Duuuuude the first time I heard that snare playthru towards the end of the video I was ohhhdang that was sick!
Dude, that's not Renassaince music, that's Klezmer ;)
Looks like you’re enjoying it more now ! Great vid
yea I've come to terms with it haha
Awesome video!
Seems like the limited amout of voices is a real bummer! Is it a deal breaker?
Lots of fun watching your process! I agree the workflow would be a lot smoother by automatically duplicating the pattern when extending its duration. For my workflow I’d love to be able to copy patterns from one pad to another, currently the copy function only seems to work for the entire group pattern :/ or perhaps I’m missing something? Thanks for the inspiration!
amazing vid
THIS WAS DOPE! 💪🏾🫡🌹
hey! nice jam! one question sticks tho: why do you think the Seqtrak is not worth it? Could you do a video with your impression and explaining why?
Great video. I’m kind of new at this, just wondering about the key differences between the ko2 and OP-Z. My use case is I basically want to sample, add drums, sequence it and be able to play live while I play my electric guitar.
A KO2 sounds good when Ricky Tinez plays with it, but he could come up with a nice tune with a broken slinky and an eggbeater. I would like to meet the Otamatone guy, Tosa-san. I learned about him when I bought my Otamatone. He is a very interesting person and inventor.
WTF your last few vids have been absolute fire with the tunes. Get them 3 min jams after sign off back again pls ❤
No filter on individual samples? 😅 Thanks for your demo!
Thanks Ricky!
thank you!
Hey Rick! Amazing as usual. Do you prefer KOII over SP404? I thought you would use the SP404 (but not microphone is a big reason to discard it haha)!
I bought 404 instead of KOII, but after using it for a while, I can see the advantage to having both. The 404 is a little more rigid and non-intuitive.
This one did my head in 😂
best NAMM video of the year. ✊🏾🤣
Is your KO II way better than mine or are you just a genuis compared to me? Great stuff 🙌🥁
That sax sample gives me Pete Rock vibes. Still don't have a clue on the KO II workflow, looks confusing as ever. The display reminds me of walking down the Vegas strip...way too much.
Wow wish I could make music like this lol. Its like some magic alchemy. Looks sounds amazing!
8:57 oh my goodness that’s beautiful
Best NAMM video.
Cool🤟
❤❤❤
Nice finish
“…Seqtrak, it kinda sucks.” 😂 lol thx for the tips and checking the demo on IG the other day 👊🏼
Shots fired!
You win NAMM 2024!
I'm surprised and amazed how great the samples sound 😮!!
Right?! they came out crazy good. also with how NOISY Namm was
THIS is the way.
Ricky, you don't seem to be using the punch-in FX 0 much (tip: hard press to re-shuffle). Combined with punch-in FX '.' can lead to very nice surprises. Thanks for your videos
It’s cool seeing someone else’s work flow
U should mess around with the compressor too, it sounds neat
I dig. 😎
Honestly, that thing just seems like a hastle to use. Looks gorgeous, very inspiring aesthetics…but it’s 2024…it’s ok to expect better from something that costs more than a used 404.
Sorry to hear that you didn't like Yamaha Seqtrak, I was looking forward to see you review it. It looks quite impressive, good price and very good software.
I really want to want the KO ii but the quality control issues are putting me off. Are they improved?
Filter per sample like on the original KO is so needed…
Nice.
Lol literally just found out about the seqtrak and wanted rickys take on it but didnt see a video so i watched this and lol’d @0:56
For somebody who was so critical about the KO-2 you surely are showing it off a lot now..
The mic is sick on the ko2 - had no idea cause the speaker certainly aint 😅
hahahaha!
really cool little track btw - those samples really came together, finish it !@@RickyTinez
Yeah, I have a strong desire to play around with the Seqtrak for a day, but the limitations steer me away from actually buying one.
I received my K.O. II yesterday. NGL, it feels so cheap/flimsy. Yeah, it’s only €350 but I don’t feel like traveling with this thing at all.
cool
Amazing! How it all even fits in 64 mb??
No one can improve on the sampling workflow better than JJOS on the mpc
Bro it was great catching up with you at NAMM and we had a gret conversation. Good times
Shazam! thanks again for saying what's up, really appreciate it :)
Back in my meth days I might have had the patience to tweak on hardware samplers but DAWs make more sense for me.
Also, fuck that umbrella!
"Down Below Sent me Here"
At planet fitness you can scan any bar code and you can still go in. I think the same just happend to you.😂
Wish you came came to my booth!
Hold up, we need you to at least review the seqtrack 😂 I don’t have either so can’t compare but on paper the seqtrack looks way more capable than The EP
“on paper”
I'd be interested in seeing him make a track on it, too. I feel like the presets on the Seqtrak would work with Ricky's genre of music.
@@vinylarchaeologist exactly this.. in practice the record button is in the middle of the sequencer/keyboard haha. really strange stuff
Dodgy UX aside it's 64mb v 500mb user 🤷🏻♂️ throw in an FM synth and I'm thinking it might be worth looking at. But it's all personal preference, I'll watch your videos whatever you review. They're like a warm cuddle in a cold world.
Seqtrack is dope as fk!!!
Why the instant Seqtrak hate? Not exactly a nuanced take. I get that it's borrowed a fair bit from TE, but having used the OP-Z a fair bit, it looks way easier to use. I love the interface design, both hardware and software, it looks really good, if limited.
I'm probably going to buy the Seqtrak. Could you tell me why you think it "kinda sucks"?
?
The main piano loop is half a beat ahead of the rest of your sequence isn’t it?
0:45 David Grusch? 🤔
Great idear. But I’m Shute there’s an easier way to make a sample track.
What's wrong with the seqtrack? :) Just ordered myself one?
I think you’re losing voices because the high hats are automatically assigned the same choke group?
NAMM was lame this year, as was the coverage. You have the best vid on NAMM 2024. Good job.
Damn, bummed to hear your quick take on the Seqtrak. To me it looks better than that KO thing, but now I'm considering cancelling the pre-order.
Don’t! He’s wrong about Seq
Track
@WyattLite-n-inn Good to hear that. Haven't canceled yet. My thought was it would be an awesome companion to my m8.
@@CrescentRollCarl Don’t cancel…Just make sure you have a midi contoller of some sort _Akai mpk plus or something similar..
@@WyattLite-n-innA midi controller for a portable, battery-powered groovebox sounds like a pretty significant design flaw.
@@sinewaymusic Not at all .
So how does it feel after a few days of NAMM craziness? ... and cool tune but I have to say that high "voice" to my ears is a little annoying :) The rest is great as always. Thx!
Is it me or did the PO screen crack?
its scratched :/ no clue how it happened either
@@RickyTinez At least the track was minty fresh! Thanks as always!
Seq Track 😂
don't conflate 'jazz manouche' with 'renaissance fair', please.
skill factor zero
Elektron guy carries around gear from another company... Clever way to tell us how stagnant the elektron product line is.
Wasn’t he at Novation, not Elektron? But that was some time ago, why couldn’t this change?
@@bolobolognese It did change. He went from Novation to Elektron.
You must be new around here :) Welcome, and thanks for tuning in Kingof9x!
You saying that a decent new groove box "sucks" sounds very un professional.. just saying.. I know you work for electron but still , it's very disrespectful..and actually that KO2 sucks big time
honestly, that sounds horrible. But they cant all be winners.
