  • Finally another duck hunt. After our mid season break, we got back in the blind to shoot some mallards and we got a band as a nice present! We ended with a two man limit of greenheads.
    It was great to be back at it after a month long break.

    I'm glad the banded mallard was the one your buddy worked hard to get. It's nice when the hard work is paid off with a band! Nice vid

    Good shit boys! Glad to hear your wacking em! Just an idea...try and run with a kicks hi flyer xfull for those decoy shy birds, you either hit em or you don't. Good on geese to. I ran that this year and had a lot of luck with my 870. Going to be shooting a lot of trap with it too so I can really get my shot 0 in. Stay green!

      I want to pattern test my Carlson chokes a little bit before I try anything else. Since episode 9 I've actually switched back to my "Over Decoys" choke that came with my Versamax. It's done pretty decent, and overall I've shot pretty well with that and #4s.. however I have seen more cripples. Not sure if it's been the #4s or the choke not being tight enough to get a solid number of pellets on target.
      I want to reduce those cripples, but I also don't want to be blowing holes in ducks like the ducks I shot at 10 yards in episode 9... and that was with an improved cylinder. I think a modified is the tightest I'll go for the duck hunting we do. I may try something tighter for goose though.

      Drake Valley Outdoors I'll shoot #2 at late season mallards. I use Carlson mod chokes. Damn good I like to have options depending on how the birds are acting.

      Jantzen Moore I think that's all I really needed to do, setup shot size. I didn't have any problem with cripples all year really until this last split. I ended up shooting #1s the last day of the season and it seemed to knock em down pretty good. I like to have the options too, but I also try to keep from changing. I like to stay consistent with everything to eliminate as many variables between shots.

      Hey, sorry for the late response. Our limit is 5 mallards. Only two can be hens.

      I have quite a few different pieces. Delta wading jacket, Dakota hoodie and Dakota beanie are what I wear the most.

    Good goin, Fellas! Great hunt, great shootin, great ethics in trying your hardest to track your downed birds, and really pretty video quality! Cheers, Gents! Really enjoyed coming along!
    In other news:
    1) Drake, either you have a twin or I've met your Doppleganger. Do you have a twin? And or do you know an enviro science guy (Marathon Jon from Salt Lake City)? Been following you all this season and it just donned on me like a (small) hammer to the head that I either A) have worked with your twin, or 2) met your Doppleganger! He's a great a guy. You guys would get along swell. Definitely have the same all-business vibe.
    2) I'm a science geek, both for pay and for passion. Recently stumbled onto the national bird banding data repository. SWEET DATA (link below)! My favorite is the bird longevity data. It's not just for waterfowl or for waterfowl hunters (like some of the band sites), but for anyone interested in bio/ecology/avian stuffs. The link is general to the site. You might have to dig for the longevity bits, OR, I have a sweet XLXS I modified with all the data with improved sorting/searching options. Not sure how to get that to you. Maybe I could send it to Elliot and he could forward it to you. Don't want to post email on the Tubes. Anyway, FASCINATING stuff! Albatrosses that have lived for over 60 years!! Who knew? And most waterfowl species, ducks and geese alike can typically top 20 yrs of age, and that is just based on band recovery, which I think is well below 10%. And lastly, who'da thought this data would fall under the USGS umbrella??? Anyway, fun stuff if you're a bird geek like I am
    Okay then! Cheers, Drake!! Excited for your next post(s) and good luck for the closer.

      Thanks Yup! Glad you enjoyed it. I don't have a twin.. at least not one that my parents told me about! I have had a few people say they've seen my dopplegangers before.. even in my own area.
      I haven't read too much of the banding data, but I'm a member on some Facebook groups that post their bands and have seen some very old snow geese reported.. and thinking about them migrating every year.. some of those birds have seen some serious miles! Send me a message on CZcams, and I'll give you my email address.

    what camera do you use to record the shots?

  • @duckhunternjm94
    @duckhunternjm94 Před 6 lety

    If you only got 9 ducks you didn’t limit out , just because you cripple a duck does not mean you killed it . So you’re lying about limiting out

    • @DrakeValleyOutdoors
      @DrakeValleyOutdoors  Před 6 lety

      If I shoot a duck and it clearly hits the water within a reasonable distance, and it is clearly crippled, but I am not able to retrieve it, that counts as against my limit in my book. Especially because I have found one of my cripples while walking back to the truck. If I would have shot another duck during the hunt, then I would have been over my limit. Otherwise, what prevents people from going out and shooting birds then never retrieving them?

      Drake Valley Outdoors very nice. I shoot one myself. During youth hunt I shot two drake mallards in one shot. I recently found your channel and enjoy how you are personal with the camera. Keep up the good vids
