Honestly I don't ever want classic sonic to ever die as it is part of sonic's franchise and history with the 2D Sonic games.

It's just an older character design. There is literally nothing that the old design can do that the newer design can't. If Superstars was the exact same game but featured the Modern character designs, it would be no different, in fact it could arguably be better because they aren't limited by this whole "Classic Only" rule, and can include fan favourite characters like Shadow or Silver. Literally the only complaint would be from these Classic purists going "But I don't like that stinky green eyed Sonic! I don't want that edge lord hadow and that lame-o Silver shouting *IT'S NO USE* in this game! GET RID OF 'EM OR I'M NEVER PLAYING ANOTHER SONIC GAME EVER AGAIN REEEEEEE!" And ask yourself, do these kinds of demands really deserve to be catered to?

@@afronautexplorer144 My point is that Sonic's design has absolutely nothing to do with the quality of the gameplay. This whole "Sonic 4 exists, so that means that Modern Sonic can NEVER be in another 2D game ever again" attitude is just ridiculous.

How long can that last though? How long before being only able to play as Sonic, Tails, Knuckles and Amy gets boring? And if they're going to include "New Classic" characters, well then they aren't Classic, are they? They're new!
I'ma be honest...
I love Classic Sonic content. Mainly because I grew up with 2d Sonic and have never legitimately played a 3d Sonic game other than a small bit of Colors and Adventure (my mom hates video games).
At first I was a very skeptical on the timeline separation thing from Gens but thanks to Mania and Superstars I'm... actually very glad it happened. (Even though he was used horrendously in Forces.)
Also about the repetitive use of Green Hill I also didn't mind it. Mainly cause I see it that Green Hill is Sonic's HOME. It's where he grew up before Eggman came in turning animals into robots. I get it that Sega CONSTANTLY uses it for nostalgia bait, but I like to see it as more than that.

I'd like if they sort of swap between 2d and 3d for both. Like whenever classic gets a 3d game, modern gets a 2d game, and the other way around. Not to mention the occasional spin offs.

Not a bad idea on paper, but this is the Sonic fan base that that we're talking about here. There's always bound to be some incredibly petty and vocal group who will complain for some stupid reason or another.
If they make a Modern 2D game that has even the slightest flaw in it, then they'll whine "See, that's why lame-o Modern Sonic doesn't belong in the 2D games! Keep him and his yucky long legs and his stinky green eyes as far away from the 2D games as possible, for they are sacred!"
Likewise, if they make a new 3D game with Classic Sonic that actually turns out to be good, you'll get them saying "Oh look at that! Classic Sonic had a better game than Modern Sonic! More proof that he's a million, billion, squillion, kajillion times betterer than that Modern imposter Sonic!"
It all just seems so divisive and isn't really doing the series reputation any good!

Gosh I still remember when I saw the Sonic Superstars trailer for the first time, I was literally screaming of excitement-
At this point, I don’t care much about Classic Sonic coming back as long as he’s not stupidly shoved into a Modern Sonic game for no reason like in Forces, his appearances in a Modern Sonic game should’ve just stayed at Generations cause it worked there with how that game is, there was no point in him being in Forces so hopefully after that Sega will just keep him to his own games and not force him to share Modern’s spotlight
I don’t mind Classic Sonic as an idea, but the fact that he’s been used to the point of exhaustion is why older fans groan. Like why do we have to say ‘Classic’ or ‘Modern’, why not just Sonic? We had our time with the past, we gotta move forward. But the marketable angle of the idea ‘Classic’ resonates more with the investors and fans in terms of image. Overall, I wish things would be slightly different.
Exactly! I have no doubt that Superstars will be a fun game, but the way that fans are treating it already before it's even out just feels like they're praising it for what it isn't, rather than what it is.
Yeah, no Avatars and overly dark stories and villains, no Deadly Six, no Wisps, no storybooks and swords, no Werehogs, no snogging princesses, no guns and swearing, no super power of teamwork, no emo edge lords, no convoluted and confusing story, THIS IS THE GREATEST SONIC GAME EVER!!!"
Meanwhile, do the same thing with a modern game and these Classic purists start going "But it's not Classic, SO IT SUCKS!!!!"
There's clearly an unfair bias here, and it's not doing the series any favours.
I honestly think Sega keeping Classic Sonic separate from Modern Sonic is a good idea. And BTW, I look forward to Sonic Superstars.

Aesthetic wise, yes.
I might get some hate for this, but I'd be open to another Modern and Classic crossover down the line. It'd be cool to see how they combine the classic style gameplay with the new Open-Zone gameplay.
I kind agree with you, when sonic forces was announced I thought they would do some like remixed old levels with twists or even for characters, imagine what an rainbow hill zone or an magma chaos could look like, I also thought they would finnaly do this on frontiers but it was the same thing as last time again, I hope someday they visit this idea

Hear hear! It's all just putting unnecessary labels on things and limiting the game's potential. And this all started because a bunch of whiners complained about Sonic's eye colour in Sonic 4 and Sega for some reason feel obligated to appease them. And have been doing that for over a decade!

I just feel like keeping modern sonic as the only main design would make the franchise feel more whole. If more 2d games were made with the modern aesthetic, like the advance, rush and "4" series did, I'd love them as long as they're well done. Even so, I do like classic, so I wouldn't say it's that major of an issue to have both designs. Modern does need to be more prominent and marketed though.
I don’t mind Classic Sonic being delegated to 2D games, especially if it keeps him from returning in the 3D games. The last thing we need is a repeat of Sonic Forces. Although I can’t help but be disappointed at the prospect that Modern Sonic 2D games may no longer be a thing. The Sonic Rush games are some of my favorite 2D Sonic games of all time. Maybe we’ll still get Modern 2D Sonic games but as of now, it’s hard to say.
Well modern sonic died out including modern sally Amy etc so im sticking with the classics just for the nostalgic fan purposes only
Sonic Rush is the best 2d game in the franchise, imo and it barely plays like a classic game

@@gunman8452nah it's not but I love sonic rush. And I think that style is a good modernization of the classic formula. Sonic rush just had a few too many trial and error moments at the end. Hopefully dimps can come back and make a new rush game.

No, all I can say is that they should drop the whole separate Sonics schtick. It’s just dumb to have the same guy be plopped into the same game.
If SEGA weren't largely stingy on the whole dimension schtick, make the classic one 3D, no cutbacks.

I think that they could still use modern sonic in 2d. Classic sonic would bring the classic formula of gameplay, and modern sonic would bring different spins of the classic style that are different and unique. This way classic fans and modern fans can be happy, with classic maintaining the original gameplay and modern bringing that experimentation that the 2000 brought with the spin-offs, like rush
Sega already tried modern sonic in 2D *cough* Sonic 4 *cough* and we all know how that turned out. 🙄

Short answer, no. Long answer SEGA will ever stop milking him. But honestly if they produce games like Mania and Superstars, I will have no complaints
If you want modern characters in sonic super stars just use mods if you are on pc
Honestly I don’t blame Sega for trying to shove Classic Sonic in everything. There’s a subset of Sonic fans who love to rip on all the modern Sonic games, say the franchise should’ve never went 3D, there are too many characters, and that the 90s Sonic is the “real Sonic”. Around Generations’ release there were people saying that they should just focus on Classic Sonic from then on.
So while Sega does make a lot of questionable choices, sometimes it seems like any decision they make will be criticized. (Remember the first trailers for Sonic Frontiers?)

pretty much yes, even tho they can do 2D things with Modern such as Advance or Rush or how Mario does it with New and Wonder, but because Classic Fans want it and their money to be made, yes, he ain't going anywhere, but honestly, as long as they keep Modern 3D and make more fully 3D games with him without the nostalgia and actual story while Classic does it's thing and keep those fans happy (and shut) so SEGA doesn't try and do what they did in the 2010s, it's a good compromise I suppose
and to be clear, I don't hate Classic, but, after the 2010s, I don't wanna go back

Classic Sonic has started this whole franshise to the top, if it wasn't for him, Modern Sonic wouldn't even exist.
Honestly.. I don't really care about which timeline of sonic they use, what only matters is if the games are having great ratings and sell well around the world.

Classic isn’t going anywhere because there’s different parts of the fan base Some people love Modern Some People like Classic I think that SonicTeam should stick to the Modern games while Arzest on Classic Games. Also can I recommend a video on IDW being canon or the Sonic Canon now then previous years.

I think from a practical standpoint, various fans need to accept that Sega sees Classic Sonic as a valuable sub-brand for the series and they're going to take advantage of that with stuff like merch, games, and occasional one off comic IDW. That doesn't mean that he himself is a completely different from Modern Sonic or that the classic variation needs to be shoved into modern flavored games, but I do think the reality going forward is that it will continue to be a sub-series within the broader IP.
Sega, whether they intended to or not, did end up creating different types of fandoms for the series, and I can't really blame them for deciding having separate sub-markets to better make bank on it makes more sense than trying do so in single games. The idea of some players having classic games to enjoy and others having modern titles to have fun with entirely works for me because I've always been fond of a TMNT like approach to Sonic where different variations can all be just as valid as each other.
they could've had three Sonics if they didn't mess Boom up so badly with Classic being 2D, Modern being 3D with serious stories, and Boom being experimental with lighthearted stories, honestly surprised they didn't make a part game with it

While I would love to see a new 2D Modern Sonic game at some point in the future, I would totally understand if SEGA decides to have the 2D games be Classic Sonic only from now on, starting with Superstars. The classic and modern versions of Sonic need to remain separate: Classic Sonic = 2D (can have 3D graphics like Superstars but must remain a 2D side-scroller) and Modern Sonic = 3D. That means no shoving in 2D sections into a 3D Sonic game just for nostalgia purposes, especially considering that SEGA said Frontiers is the new standard for 3D Sonic games. Open world games should not have 2D sections unless they are part of some side missions, like how Mario Odyssey is. That game only has 2D sections for certain areas and even then, they only take up a small portion of the game. In the next 3D Sonic game, the open world areas should be completely 3D and SEGA should leave the 2D sections for cyberspace only.

Like him or not, it doesn't matter to me. Classic Sonic is still fun to play in my book. Though outside of that Classic Sonic Improvement Mod for Forces by Showin, I can definitely agree he sucks in Forces.
Don't think classic Sonic being exclusive to 2d is a bad thing, I think SEGA biggest mistake was treating classic and modern as 2 different characters in Forces (and maybe they still do idk)

Superstars looks like it'll be a good game, but I'm not hyped for it. I'm not a huge fan of the classic games. I only liked 2 and 3, I think it's because you know exactly what you're getting with a classic game, they all play the same as well so there's nothing to really look forward to aside new stages and bosses.
True but they can also expand on what a 2d Soinc can do I mean look at Donkey Kong Tropical freeze and how they even had a bunch of 3d sections in that game
The least enticing aspect of superstars imo is the fact that it is 3d. The 3d art is so generic compared to the gorgeous and expressive sprite work.
