dude,I have to stare at my phone almost in tears because on how much this game mean to me and to know that I am not alone having this emotions makes me feel very VERY happy. this game has something in the music that still until this day i can bring my childhood back in a matter of milliseconds,I mean the entire childhood not only in gaming but at life at bests moment of my life. thank you so MUCH for the video!i wish i can hug you man shit I am so excited
:D
You're not alone bro
Another one here. same feeling and many goosebumps. ❤❤
the same thing happened to me...isa ema
Same here mate. Of of my best Christmases of all time when I got this.
"So we got on our skateboards and went down to the mall..." Perhaps the second most 80s/90s thing ive ever heard
whats number 1?
"We were sitting in the school yard showing each other our Pogs..."
+RetroHellspawn nah, that ain't it.
Nerd Cave Sounds gnarly dude.
My first ever Console as a kid was the Sega Master System. I got it for Christmas and I LOVED it. However, Santa (My mum) got it me and so I had no choice in the games I got when I opened it.
Hehehe my Mum chose for me Golvellius and Spellcaster. I had no idea wha the hell either of them was about. But for the next 6 months I played them to death... getting to level 2 on both of them. They was sooooo fucking hard! hehehe
After those 6 months I found some fool in school who swapped me for Mickey Mouse: Castle of illusion and California Games.... classics!
Since that day I have never heard the name of that game from anyones lips. RIP Goly my lil mate, we had some good times :D
Great video mate as always, took me back to those special times in the 80s... thank you!
This is one of the best things you've ever done. I love the RPG book you made and the editing, game footage, plot summary, and enthusiasm are all excellent.
That's actually a really adorable ending for that game. I actually can't wait to play this and I hope I enjoy it as much as you have.
I really appreciate the way you describe how gaming was back in the 80s. I often feel I can’t even decide a game to play now a days. Back then, you played what was available and found the gems, like you did with Golvellius. And, what a wonderful game this was.
I miss that day. It didn’t require a AAA game that was heavily advertised to share the experience with your friends. You just sat down with them and showed them. We saw the magic.
Great video, Johnny! Haven't seen a proper review video in a long time. Keep 'em coming. Love when you review the classic games of our youth!
Glad you mentioned the soundtrack. I've found it doesn't get much remix love on youtube. Last year, I made a Golvellius arrangement and uploaded it to my channel, however it hasn't gotten many views at all compared to my others. Maybe I should have done one of the overworld or underworld themes.
Might do another sometime. We'll see.
Golvellius is better than Zelda 1 and Crystalis. This game has a rocking soundtrack, a very awesome ending and a simple yet very awesome gameplay, the one hole per map rule ot thumb is really awesome, much better than Zelda 1 random cave. This game is the best although my biggest complain was knowing that you needed to find the aqua boots to be able to finish the marsh. Not to mention grinding for money is very fast too.
Golvellius, Landstaler and Lennus 2 are the three games hinting at a sequel I want the most made. I mean come on you can finish a game but when it's to be continued like this and Lennus 2 it's annoying that there never was any sequels, not to mention in Landstalker how they talked about the continent the whole game only for you to never even go there.
Great post. And i agree with Golvellius being better than Zelda (which i also love). Other Master system games i rate higher than Zelda are: *Golden Axe Warrior* and *Ys:The Vanished Omens.*
yessssssssss
Crystallis is pretty bad and repetitive, i would say
nah, Crystalis is better
Alundra on PS1 is apparently a sequel to Landstalker.
I also really loved Govellius. I was a Master System kid. I had friends with NES's, so I'd played a number of the key titles (SMB Legend of Zelda I & II). Still, getting to play some of the SMS highlights was awesome. I remember being stuck for the longest time and then accidentally finding out that later underground areas weren't hidden under a rock or accessed by killing monsters, but rather adding trees and tombstones as things to be swatted to open the screen underground passage.
I'd always wanted that Govellius sequel where you had access to all three characters. It could have been awesome!
Nice. Love the review. Golvellius have a really special place in my heart. Me and my dad spend hundreds of hours into this game. We drew maps and everything. Even found some special codes that made no sense(millions of gold or invisible).
The ending always bugged me, to be continued. I really thought it would come a sequel to the master system or a big slam from nowhere to the mega drive, but it never happen.
I think the msx got one tho. :/
Great game John :)
wow you had a hip dad for back then, nowadays a lot of parents play video games with they're kids but back in the 90's it was rare and in the 80's it was almost non existent, lucky you.
Agreed! You are lucky! my parents thought I was crazy!
Crazy jealous of you and your dad!
the music, the mechanic of the gameplay, everything was awesome..the best game in my entire life never will forget it..never
I'm the proud owner of that game and it still plays great after all these years.
Oh my, my loved game Golvelius :)
The only game of my childhood that beat Mystic Quest soundtrack, what a feat ;)
Golvelius was an experience
Golvellius is one of the best 8-bit games *ever.*
Chilling on a Sunday morning. New HCG vid? Nice.
Man I wish we would of gotten Govellius II for Genesis. Maybe with Sonic Ma ia being recieved so well, we will finally get a 2D sequel to Govellius.
I remember this game. I _WISH_ that they made a Golvellius 2. That would have been great!
Awesome review. Love it. This game me and my brothers often bring up when thinking back. I play the soundtrack every now and then.
My younger bro even made me a Golvellius Cake for my birthday :D
Just recently subscribed. HCG, you deserve way more subs. Your reviews are always insightful, interesting, and educational. Keep it up man!
Great review! I love whenever you talk on the Sega master system!
Great video, love Golvellius + SMS
For anyone that don't want the ending to be spoiled stop at 8:00 and skip to 9:20 :)
This is a game we really need to pick up and play. You speak so highly of it and it really looks right up my alley.
-David
Golvellius is one of my favorites, the music is really catchy and the whole experience really feels like an adventure. Still a joy to pick up and play through.
I am glad I am not the only one in this world that loves Golvellius!
Amazing review, Johnny! I wish I could play this now!
Golvellius, an awesome game on an awesome system!
Agree on that good sir.
Excellent video, very entertaining, i just love playing Golveillius, Phantasy Star & The Dragons Trap. thanks for sharing this with us :)
Loved this game back when I was a kid, one of the first titles I completed.
I grew up in a Sega country, so Master System ruled, and agreed, the music is so nostalgic. This game in particular blew me away and has always been my favourite video game soundtrack. I rented it once (in 1995) and for the past 10 years I've had the intro song on my phone so it's cool when it pops up on shuffle. Anyway, I just played through it finally recently. In 1995 I didn't get far, I was young and impatient with grinding and only having 2 days with it. I think I got as far as Bachular. Coming back to it for closure has been on my "to do" list for the past 20 years. I'm proud to say I got through this game without dying once! I won't say it was easy, I came close a few times, but i got a perfect run. I did get stuck for a while, and it was the aqua boots! Maybe took me a couple of days. When I hit that tree and the hole opened I was like "how are you supposed to know this!!??" I only figured it out because I've played many many RPGs, and 8 bit ones are quite small, so you just try everything, You get there eventually. That particular screen had no holes as well, and this game, has a hidden cave on every screen, so you sorta know where to look.
And yes good mention of Miracle Warriors. I played through that about 2 years ago too and got stuck in that same final boss hunt! I eventually just searched every square in that desert till I found it (turns out I had the calculations right, I just didn't get that you were supposed to double it cos Iason took 2;steps for 1 for a normal man...like wtf I just thought that was a throw away comment! 😝)
Anyway thanks for the review. Great to see appreciation for a lesser known favourite of mine from childhood.
Govellius is one of the best Master System games. So many great memories. And as you say, the music was and still is awesome!
Love this game, one of my favorite Master System games! A childhood friend had this game and we played it a lot. Still to this day I think of Golvellius when I think of Master System music. Years later when I started collecting, this was one of the games I had to find. Box and instruction included! ^_^ And just like me as a kid, I couldn't put it down until I finally defeated it. To this day I mention Golvellius as one of the best titles to hunt for when collection for the Master System.
Jealous of the shirt man, love the review ^_^
Hi, I´ve just found your channel while looking for SMS games when I was younger (I´m 31 now). I really like your style of reviews and thus I´m giving thumbs up and a sub :)
the music you showed is is simply awesome ... I love it too..,. Great Golvellius!!!
Watched this video back when it premiered. Watching again as I am getting back into classic games. 5 years in the making this vid.
This and Alex Kidd in Miracle World were my first video games.. I made my dad play this over and over as I was scared of some of the bosses, like the giant bat. Haha! Funny to think about now. It's so heartwarming to see someone speak so passionately about this game. It truly is an amazing journey!
Good to see HCG back doing what he does best, retro reviews👍
I enjoyed this review a lot, especially the point you made about enjoying the SMS because we were not flooded with games back then.
Those were great days. I remember when the only RPG's I had ever played were Dragon Warrior 1, FInal Fantasy and Y's for the SMS. There wasn't very many RPG's to play and knowing when they were getting released was another mystery:)
Those were special times...
Those where the days it's why I love DarkSouls it's got that touch of old school gaming
The MSX versions are what I grew up with. Still own them both...and the spin-off Super Cooks! Never tried the Master System version. Thanks for this, great review as always!
Can't forget that game over melody:)Household classic if you grew up on the Sega Master System.
I remember getting pretty far in this games a kid but could never figure out how to beat it. The clues were hard to translate and I couldn't figure out what they meant. The fifth crystal was as far as I got but then I just got lost. This game was so fun. I loved the aqua boots. I'm glad you reviewed this game. I'm going to go back and beat it now.
Best way to start the morning a hot coffee and HCG game review just awesome!!! :)
Thank you!
God do I miss that 80s/90s anime art. Still sucks to think we have generations of butchered box art here because the original art was "too Japanese".
TriforceRich the art in the game manuals back then , so amazing
Another great review, keep up the good work buddy!
Dude you look so much healthier these days. Cheers and great review as always.
I just picked this up for the Master System, good to hear it was worth getting!
I love Golvellius it was my first game I bought for the Sega Master and my first Rpg I own and finished.I love your t-shirt,now I need to have it 😞.
I love how Golvellius is even carrying the two on his shoulders as they walk toward their next grand adventure. He went from aaabsolute evil to 'Oh, you two are just so adorable, I could just... oh c'mere *lifts them both on his shoulders*' xD
That said! This ending was awesome when I was younger, and a lot of the big bad monsters in my childhood nightmares were suddenly not quite as scary specifically because of this ending. They could be beaten... they could be turned... they could give me a ride on their shoulders >8D
Cool review! Something I noticed. Is the audio hardware in the SMS really limited? I know it's missing the FM hardware but still, it seems like the music for nearly all games sounds very similar, like there's only a handful of sounds that were available to compose tunes with. With the NES there was a large variety of sounds. For instance, Konami games sounded distinct from Capcom games. Nintendo games sounded different from games that came from RARE, and so on.
I would have been the biggest addict of this game if I had known about it back in the day. The old Zelda game took up many hours of my childhood and I always wanted to play another like it but all I had was the Genesis hooked up
I picked this game up awhile back after I heard about you talking about it. I just had to get it!
Great overview of Golvelius after Game Sack highlighted it last week. Looks and sounds great for the Master System. Compile was so good at music. Since I mentioned Game Sack, I haven't been able to watch your vids without hearing Joe's take on you since the parody.
Rena reminds me of my favorite character from Star Ocean 2.
I wonder if Game Sack's episode about clone games reminded you of thos game
Love me some master system reviews!
I always rooted for SMS. NES seemed to lock up the market with license with 3rd party
I need to check this game out. I've just recently got into the Master System. I completed my NES collection but I'm so new to Master System that I've only played though and own a handful of games
Love this, thanks! I was very into Golvellius when it was new.
Great review Johnny! :) I love the Sega master system
I miss the 90s a time when society wasn't as messed up ;-;
I think that things started to slide slowly around the time of the first gulf war.... just my 10 cents
Dave Dogge I want to time travel to the 90s with all my stuff
I do agree the 1990s were a very care free time. Even in Spain were I am now there is a comic book about this era in Spain whose name escapes me.
ah ok I just remembered the name of that comic book about the 90s in Spain and happier times. Lost Felices 90s (The Happy 90s) ... so it's not just you saying it.
www.amazon.es/Los-felices-90-Novela-gr%C3%A1fica/dp/8416400024/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1465445697&sr=8-1&keywords=los+felices+90s
i remember i didn't get sonic with my mastersystem i got tom and jerry and alex kid built in , didnt like tom and jerry, but alex kid changed every thing , then i played golvellius and it was just amazing , i still find my self humming there tunes 25 years later :)
Was so happy to see this ! Bought this the day it came out as well.. had so many pieces of paper with passwords written on them stuffed inside my Golvellius case lol.. this definitely was one of my favorite SEGA Master System games 🤟🏽🤣🤟🏽aqua boots was such a game changer damn it lol.. allowing me to go back and visit areas with water.. and MY JESUS.. u mentioned MIRACLE WARRIORS LOL.. that game gave me so much fucking anxiety as a young kid 😂
Great review! I played this game for the first time last year and was able to reach the end all by myself, no guide or anything. I guess that at some point when you've been looking around for hours you do get desperate enough to start hitting every single tree multiple times!
same here but I played it in 2011. I think it took me like 2 hours to finally find the fucking aqua boots. I had no idea if I was supposed to actually finish the marsh before going to the ocean
I love these review videos :) Johnny would you mind telling me what website you order all of your awesome shirts from? Thanks.
I remember being stuck looking for those Aqua Boots for hours and hours....
I was an SMS kid. I got it for my bday before the NES. Which I would get a few years later. Golvellius was one of my favorite games on the system. I remember playing Blaster Master and thinking the boss fights in that game copied Golvellius's boss fights. They look similar, don't they?
35 years later I still hum the music in my car
I was washing my car in my drive way last month and found myself just randomly saying Golvellius in an evil voice when my neighbors walked by, did I mention I am a little crazy too,lol .No seriously I never played this game but heard about it through HCG previously and just was intrigued at the way the word sounded when said, well that's my story for today, hope you all enjoyed it and thanks again John for the awsome work you do.
Honestly! Soooo many friends have always asked what is that game?
What is Golvellliussss??" lol
it must be hard for the younger gamers belive how things were when we were younger,no internet reviews to see what was any good you had to look at the box art and ask your friends, plus there wasnt them many games and a lot were japanese only and RPG were far and few between, its hard to imagine now for younger people
Oh, the password system. In some ways I miss it...not really though:p
That is nifty that the overworld theme changes when you get key items. That ending was definitely trying to set up a sequel. Was there ever one? That music is quite awesome :D
The password system was one of those nightmarishly long ones. I'll always have that password theme ingrained in my head.
If I remember correctly, there was one for The Magic of Scheherazade and that was lengthy. Why couldn't more of them been simple like the Mega Man ones?
@@muragaru553 this game was on Japanese home computers, meaning it's gonna have stupidly long passwords
With that ending they really should have made a turn base RPG sequel, and had those three as the main starting characters, I mean you have a herbal medic/healer, a hero/fighter, and a big tough tank type guy to take the damage for you, you probably wouldn't even need any other party members, they just need an interesting story for their new adventure.
I went to a pawn sup shop and they had about 16 Master System games that I bought for $7.50 total. all of them have a case is in the book which included Phantasy Star and this game. I didn't know much about this game and now I'm very excited to play it. since you have very good taste in games
Can you make a Review of Live a Live for the snes?
Just recently discovered it and it looks quite intriguing
These old school games would be wonderful on the vita
...But a lot of stuff like this has already been coming out on the new 3DS, and it has a considerably better controller layout, and the screen is just as big as the Vita. It also has FAR better shoulder buttons, so I don't see why it has to come to the Vita, when it's already on the superior hardware that the makers of actually give a shit about, and didn't immediately shoot it dead when it didn't perform up to its obscene expectations.. Eh, I'm still sore about what happened with the Vita, I invested a lot into that system, and I'm not even able or allowed to replace the failing battery mine!
I never had much exposure to the SMS. I was a Sega / Nintendo kid growing up. Didn't even get my first PC until the late 90's
I'm buying this game next. I was born in 1990 so I missed out on a lot of master system games.
Oh man, I would have loved this game back then!
Wish they would do a sequel or an updated version of this game...
i got to get around and play this one...i vaguely remember seeing it in a toys r us or something....
i hate cliffhangers tho....would be awesome to see a sequel made....
LOVED this game back in the day. Brilliant gameplay and challenging!!! Really don't understand why it never received a sequel!!
Hey Johnny, I'd love to try this game. With exception of the palm tree to get the aqua boots, would you say that the game is easy to figure out without a guide? :)
Honestly never played or heard of this and I know games. Cool to discover new stuff, good review Johnny
i never even knew about the sega master system because I thought it was the same thing as the genesis with the same games, just a name change with a cooler look.
I've been looking for this game for quite a bit now, I really wanna try it out.
Oh, the memories. . . Johnny can you do the ms review of Rastan?
Just started playing this game on emulation....can't find a real sms copy .....on the lookout...great review Johnny!
I was hoping you'd bring up the Turbografx at the end there and you didn't : P
You're absolutely correct about everything you said. We had a lot of time on our hands and NO INTERNET HELP... LOL
This was a great game back in the day...
Love your tshirt, want the same :) golvellius my best old game on sms
Well, now I understand why you got the bead art today!
Certainly one of my all time favorite games on the Master System.
And I can’t believe there has never been a sequel because the ending promises a sequel!
Johnny I appreciate the imagination you had add a child. Freaking awesome.
*as
Excellent review!!
Have you ever played The Guardian Legend?
I just started playing Golvellius, and I noticed a lot of similarities to The Guardian Legend. It's definitely the same person doing the music, I'm curious if it was the same team.
ah the great master system games! so many memories
So cool! Very nice video bro! Tnhx!
Bro are you aware you can play the msx version of golvellius on nintendo switch? Its on the eshop
That shirt is getting a lot of miles.
Well at least it deserves them, and he's clearly washing it right, must not be using a dryer on it, as I see no cracking at all.
me too
I used to draw my own versions of the cover art!
Hey can you review some action games like contra, super c, and castlevania 3?
I had my folks looking for the sequel of this game for months at Toys R Us :) I was convinced there would be a second one.
