As a german Asterix Fan (i got all the comics, movies, everything) i have to correct you, that the magic potion doesn't heal the gauls. It turns them into superhumans so they can fight off the constant barrage of the roman onslaught. That's kinda based on the gauls actually fighting off the roman conquerors in ancient times of course. The comics are usually a lot of social satire, comedy and also portraying real life events (the best book is the gauls helping out the brits who are just about to be invaded by the romans, it's chock full of all stereotypes and cliches, to the point were the magic potion gets destroyed, so Asterix instead hands the brits a bunch of leafs and thus tea was discovered giving the brits the strength to fight off the romans) Up until Rene Goscinny's untimely death, Asterix and his texted Lucky Luke comics were the epitome of euopean comics, just the absolute best in terms of humour, social commentary and satire. That being said. While i prefer the first game, this one is actually nearly as good, just is a bit worse in terms of level design in my oppinion (and Obelix feels kinda weak) The Core game that followed was crap and was in line with all the bad french games about Asterix (kinda funny that they never could get their most famous comic book hero right, doesn't matter if it was Coktel Vision on PC or Infogrames later in the 90's, but the best other Asterix game came out of Japan, courtesy of Konami in the Arcades)
If you read the manual about this one, it specifically says that they need the potion, because everyone is getting sick, and if they remain in that weakened state, then they won't be able to defend themselves against the Romans. Perhaps it's a slightly different potion than normal, but that's the plot of this particular game.
Good old Asterix, I spent many an afternoon reading the comics. The video games never lived up to the glory of the books, unfortunately, but they're still worth the play 😎👍
The first master system one, as well as the Konami Arcade game definitely live up to it, they are great overall and definitely weren't a "let's slap a license on some random game"-thing.
I'm just here in the comments section to let the world know that the island of paradise scene from The Twelve Tasks of Asterix movie is absolutely bonkers bongos acid trip.

Thank you! Sometimes it's nice to be able to play these smaller games, and just be done with them in an afternoon, versus current day, where you're spending multiple weeks to play through a game.
This one passed me by as a Kid, I do remember playing the 1st one however And enjoyed it, Maybe I have to give this 1A go someday but from your review I'm not in any hurry, I'm new to the channel and have just subscribed, I look forward to checking out more of your great Saga Content
HAH. Thanks. Yeah, the outer cover on that copy is a little bent, so I could probably find one in better condition relatively cheaply, but I don't think it's worth it.
Yeah, very curious about how that went, and with the Genesis vs Master System version, since that Genesis version is the only one that made it to the US.
Recently completed it. Like it, but it isn't as great as the original. The third has a different developer. That one probably is the worst, but not horrible by any means. A bit rare though.
Actually, both were efforts from Sega CS, which was a spinoff from Sega R&D #2. But I'm sure even though they were from the same studio technically, it was probably a different team. And yeah, I've already been warned that Asterix and the Great Rescue isn't as good, which is surprising, because I normally like Core Design.
This series has been the perfect companion to me getting back to collecting for the master system.

I could see that. I've been curious about the recent ones, on modern consoles, but I haven't sat down to play any of them.

Those graphics are exceptional for an SMS game. Squint, and it could be mistaken for an early Genesis game.
They are quite good, and why I liked the original so much.

I’m afraid the third one, as you say by Core, is not quite comparable. Although there’s still a lot worse.
