  • Restoring a steering column in a HZ Holden - or probably any model from HQ to WB - is not hard but it takes time! Also, for the newbie at least, there are a few things to know that might not be immediately obvious. This is part 1 of my restoration of Trixie's steering column, getting the rust and paint and grime stipped off, ready for rust treatment, painting, and reassembly.

    Now I'm all caught up on your HZ videos. Can't add much useful as I haven't played with HZs ( the only Holden's I've really had the pleasure of messing around with are LJ Toranas). Anyway a comment goes a long way to helping out the youtube algorithm 😄. I'm really enjoying this series so thanks for making the effort of filming and editing it all, I know that stuff takes many hours of work

      Shane, thank you for watching them all! It's just great having conversations like this with anyone who shares a similar interest or experience. LJs are special little Holdens too. And yeah, it takes time to make these videos but I like documenting the journey for my own benefit too, as well as sharing what might help someone else in future. See you around!

    I've got the same tear down table as well, its baptism was only 2 weeks ago when I removed the brake booster and started cleaning it up, it had brake fluid galore inside it from sucking the leaky master cylinder for some time. Not sure if I'll bother to do my steering column as it just needs a lick of paint or clean up from what I've seen. But you've made it really handy for anyone contemplating the same.
    I took a break from the grinding also, the weather's been very wet so staying in the house has been more inviting than the shed. I'm also going to give the floor a bit of a going over as I noticed a few spots not looking too good. Also, found some pinholes right near the front drain plug area so I welded in some plate there, it pays to get a bright torch behind some metal areas at times to check for these things, also helped when I welded the firewall to see where some spots were missed, it's definitely not visible without it shining behind it.
    Bought some fish oil and the first place I'm going to put some is inside those holes at the back of the cab there, just because it looks nigh on impossible to do much inside that cavity. I hope it smells like pizza anchovies!
    Keep on keeping on. Stay warm.

      Pizza anchovies!!!!! 🤣🤣🤣
      Fishoilene has virtually no smell... just the propellant.
      You're doing some great work too, despite the weather... maybe you need a channel too 😉.
      Scotty has been using the torch method with his Torana plenum repairs, works a treat.
      I'll check Trixie's cowl that way too. Her plenum is awesome.
      Yeah that table is super useful, just the right size.
      Thanks for keeping up the conversation Spyder.

      A channel? No way, I make videos for my school and that’s enough. I put up some riding my dirt bike but that was ages ago and just mucking about with a small camera on my helmet. I prefer to watch all the talented people such as yourself. I was told the fish oil would smell but maybe that was stuff of old or something, good to know.

      @staceonwheels  Před rokem

      Yeah it's not straight fish oil... see Wattyl Killrust Fishoilene. And don't mistake my work for talent! 😂😂 I'm learning as I go, hopefully with a little bit of common sense and life experience to help.

      @@staceonwheels As in your talent for talking/delivery with your audience, you have that down well. As for the car skills, we're in the same boat, err car! I wish I had done it ages ago, the old bones are finding it hard cramped up inside the cab grinding away, my neck is feeling it. I envy you both having the same passion, my wife has no interest in that area but does boost me up when I feel like I took on a herculean task!

      Thank you! I did more grinding in the cab today... after 2 hours I definitely felt the age in my muscles too.

    Doing a great job 👍🏻 probably what I should have done to mine but I needed to do away with the column shift so I’ve just ordered a billet works steering column

      @@staceonwheels I’m just going to use the haltech ic-7 digital dash. I’ve gone in the opposite direction to your build, I’m pretty much changing/ upgrading everything.

      Like Sam did on Shenke Garage... my next build is a fantasy of doing very modern version of a 73 Challenger!

    If anyone reads this, the key has to be in the lock when the barrel is removed and the lock has to be rotated to a certain point it's either the Acc position or the On position. Otherwise the little spring loaded latch doesn't push in, cool little security feature of these old beasts.

    • @staceonwheels
      @staceonwheels  Před 9 měsíci

      Exactly, and I cannot remember which position the key has to be in as I just fiddled until I got it... my hunch says ON position tho.

    • @stuartsaunders9642
      @stuartsaunders9642 Před 3 měsíci

      It is the "on" position. This is obvious when you remove the cylinder. It all lines up.
      Great video, mate. You are an excellent educator!

    G’day, get yourself a bench grinder with a wire wheel … I’ve got one and I’m always finding an excuse to use it, brilliant for removing rust. I also bought the polishing wheels to fit to it from supercheap.
    Great idea how you de-rusted inside the colomn,
    It’s good to see your going the extra mile, trixie will be loving all the attention haha!!
    Cheers mouse

      Hey mouse. We have a bench grinder and I never thought to try that! But will on the next rusty bits.
      Yeah Trixie will feel young again, I hope. But she has such a good baseline, it feels relatively easy. So far!
