Good advice on the hydraulic hose for them, I made a line up for my pressure side with cheap braided line and screw together fittings and it only lasted a dozen drives before the hose blew off and dumped oil straight onto extractors and caught fire. Luckily I had an extinguisher. I too now have a hydraulic hose line 👍
Good info here mate, very much appreciated. Much better to take the info from someone that’s actually had a crack at doing the job than someone that picks up on b/s and has a cry in the comments. 👍
Thanyou my good man time is one of the few things u cant get back and u sir saved me a good bunch . Nice build btw . . And alot of that hate would b comming from people without a build . They just dont get it . . Cheers for puttin this shit up
Good video thanks mate,I was going to put under guard in the xd though thought it mite look good in the boot with fuel cell and battery 👍.. you solved my problems thanks mate
I used a 70amp circuit breaker for the large constant . Thin black connected to accessories and blue and white to ignition and pump spools straight up .
You need to use a controller mate that follows steering torque input and revs , the guys in the UK are doing this for the Volvo and Ford pump . Without the controller you'll find heavy steering when you really start to push quick lock to lock manoeuvres.
Another tip - (4:10) I used a time delay module to delay the ignition feed and stop the slow spool up. You can set the timer for a 2-6 second delay and the pump starts instantly. Check eBay - NE555 DC 12V Delay Relay Shield Timer Switch Adjustable ModuleB^D
I've had 8 hq to hx holdens in 40 years & converted 5 to power steering & kept the long arms only thing i noticed was quicker response to steering wheel input no difference in turning circle at all still hit the lock stops on all of them
I noticed it on a hz 1tonner I had it had around a finger gap from hitting bump stops but I never looked much into it. Could have been the tierod arms not centred and just when I turned right it was very bad, so you might be right 👌. I do know the power steer boxes dont have as much movement as the manual boxes.
@@MCFRYMotorsport yeah could have been i didn't ever get an original v8 car that didn't have a crack behind the left hand lower control arm one one was that bad it had moved that much the extrators started hitting the steering shaft
Not familiar with the Holden steering box but my old Toyota crown (1980s) power steer box has a pressure control solenoid on it. I have the astra pump ready to put in, am I just ignoring this solenoid I.e. remove it? Cheers man, good video
What fluid have you gone with? Did you match the box or the pumps specs? My understanding is that the pump requires synthetic and the box uses dex 111.
Gday mate, are they just normal hq power steering boxes? I need power steering wss gunna go rack n pinion but expensive.this looks like a great alternative.thank you
I did this conversion and I love the feel of it. However, my only issue is that it seems a bit slow to react and turn up the pressure. Is there any way to makje it turn up the pressure quicker, or trick it to always be at 100%?
@kennyconomos5222 not that I know of unfortunately, they seem really good in my cars. Add some caster to the front which will put more load on the power steering which might be what it likes.

Iv just installed my set-up on my ute and when I turn its stiff in spots then loosens up then gets stiff again while turning in the same direction. Any ideas anyone?
Not to sure on that one, I have installed a restrictor in the return line to try as I had issues with it going stiff when I turned left to right hard. I haven't tried it yet but will at Powerplay Sydney
@@MCFRYMotorsport @MCFRY Motorsport mind if I get a bit more details about what's needed from manual to powersteering? You mentioned in your video that you need to change the nuckle on the steering shaft what do you mean by that?
@@macc4 if you have a manual box now and it gets stiff in spots it's probably out of adjustment. To go to powersteering really you need a ps box and the rag joint to mount box to steering shaft can be brought from rare spares as its different to the manual steering one.
I would double check with a blue slip guy first on that one, it depends if its in the rule book that it needs to be engineered or not. That I am not sure about.
Im new and this is on my list of 1st mods to get done

Am considering do the astra pump upgrade. My only concern is the age of the TS astra pumps now. Have you heard of any issues with them?
Great video
They do seem to be very reliable and also cheap

Th UC arms or the A9X arms that harrop sell are better for the bump steer than the standard torana arms.
