  • Ancient Carthage, founded by Phoenician colonists in the 9th century BC, evolved into a dominant empire stretching across the Mediterranean. Boasting economic prowess and a powerful navy, Carthage engaged in rivalries, notably with the Greek city-state of Syracuse, marked by political intrigue and military conflict. Despite the resilience of both sides during the Sicilian Wars, Carthage gradually asserted control over much of the western Mediterranean.
The pinnacle of Carthage's rivalry came with Rome during the Punic Wars, a series of conflicts spanning from 264 BC to 146 BC. These wars, fought over trade routes and territorial dominance, saw Rome emerge victorious, culminating in the sacking and eventual destruction of Carthage. Despite its demise, Carthage's cultural identity, rooted in its Canaanite heritage and marked by commercial acumen and unique governance, left a lasting impact on ancient civilization.
Reflecting Phoenician traditions, Carthaginian society contributed innovations such as serial production and the cothon harbor, while its system of government combined elements of democracy, oligarchy, and republicanism. Despite the destruction of much of its history, modern archaeological research offers nuanced insights into Carthaginian civilization, challenging historical narratives and enriching our understanding of this ancient powerhouse.

your videos keep getting better, always a joy to watch!
nitpick: Carthage literally meant "new city" in the Punic language, so it was... always referred to as such!
    brilliant though
