This is a Motormouth couple car review of the updated 2021 Nissan Kicks. The Kicks stormed onto the screen a few year ago and has been a sales success for Nissan. By taking a subcompact hatchback platform and making it into a small SUV has resinated with buyers. Powering the Nissan Kicks small SUV is the same 1.6L 4-cylinder engine matched with a CVT with122 horsepower and 114 lb-ft of torque engine sued in the Versa sedan. Unlike the vast majority of SUVs, this Nissan Kicks is not available with AWD or independent suspension. What has been added for 2021 is rear disc brakes on the higher trims. The Kicks gets a bigger and bolder front grille and sporty bumpers. You’ll notice the grille expands into the newly designed sharper looking headlights. LED headlights are available on the two top trims, it comes standard with Halogen headlights. 17-inch wheels are available on other trims, 17-inch alloy wheels on this top trim.SV trim as the “Best Value Trim” for $22,898 CAD/$21,350 USD. It comes with plenty of standard features like the bigger 8” touchscreen, heated cloth front seats, Apple Carplay and Android Auto, a heated leather wrapped steering wheel, power windows, power door locks, interior chrome handles, a front passenger seat back pocket, remote key-less entry, 17” alloy wheels and black fascia accents on the front and rear bumpers. If you do want the dark chrome grille, you can get it on the SR trim, the next trim up for $24,098 CAD/$21,990 USD.Blind spot monitoring, rear-cross traffic alert, lane departure warning, intelligent emergency braking with pedestrian detection, intelligent emergency breaking.Kicking it up with the Nissan Kicks!
What’s new for 2021? The Kicks gets a bigger and bolder front grille. You’ll notice the grille expands into the newly designed sharper looking headlights. LED headlights are available on the two top trims, it comes standard with Halogen headlights. The Kicks comes with the same punchy engine as the outdoing model. A 1.6L 4-cylinder matched with a CVT, it has 122 horsepower and 114 lb-ft of torque. I find this to be a great city vehicle, it’s so easy to get around and manoeuvre in and out of tight parking spots. On the highway when passing a little planning is needed before you make your move, as it doesn’t offer a lot of horsepower. We are testing the top SR Premium trim with 17” black alloy wheels, 16” are standard but the other trims offer 17” alloy wheels. This top trim comes with LED fog lights, black painted outside mirrors, body-colour outside door handles (standard), black painted roof rails and a dark chrome grille. There are plenty of standard active safety features on this crossover including, blind spot monitoring, rear-cross traffic alert, lane departure warning, intelligent emergency braking with pedestrian detection and intelligent emergency breaking Fuel economy is quite good for this compact SUV, it gets 7.7L/100km city
6.6L/100km highway. That’s 31 MPG city and 36 MPG highway. Some competition to the Kicks includes, the Kia Seltos, Chevrolet Trailblazer, Mazda CX-30 and the Hyundai Kona.

Hatch practicality is very misleading to a lot of people. If you don't fold the seats down, it is pretty much the same amount of usable cargo space as in the sedan. You can fit 3 standard roller bags in both Sentra and Kicks despite Kicks having almost 200% bigger trunk on paper.

Great review! You folks are cranking out the quality content! Sad we don't get the new Juke over here but for your money, if you want a new car, with a warranty and will not break down and is safe to drive I get it. Not everyone wants to buy used. I do have to say, I can't believe, in 2021, any manufacturer is still offering drum brakes on their cars. We have a hot hatch with 300+ HP, a manual and is crazy fast but you know what, it is not as fun to drive around town as our higher riding, compact cross over plus if I get too close to a curb I have scraped my rim in my hot hatch and I have to break out the touch up paint. Not so on my compact cross over with the bigger side wall tires. If you drive a lot in the city, you get the appeal of these cars. No judgement from me. Keep up the great work!

    Hello Zack and Andrea,
Just a general comment regarding your reporting/reviewing format.
One of my pet peeves is multi host talk shows ... on radio or tv...
    Or CZcams.
When there is more than one host, typically one tries to out clever,
out cute, or talk over the other, and it’s so annoying.
They will often cut off someone or interrupt. And they will typically grow louder and more excitable... and more annoying.
I was skeptical at first before trying one of your first videos, because I figured it might be more of the same.
I guess I decided to try one of your videos one day because of a particular car I was interested in, and because of the British Columbia connection, and I was really impressed.
You two are amazing. You sometimes do disagree on some points but when you do you’re always respectful. You don’t try to talk over the other. And although you may really like the product, your delivery is enthusiastic but calm.
In short very entertaining and exceedingly professional.
    Thanks :)
    Peter

Good video. Remember that safety ratings are for crashes involving 2 similar vehicles. You will have HUGE problems in small car like this vs a full size pick-up in a crash. The lower the vehicle is, the more likely you will suffer head & chest injuries in a head on crash, you are more likely to suffer leg injuries in a higher up vehicle such as a full size pick up in a head on crash. I have a friend that was in a head on crash at 60mph, he only had very minor injuries, he was in a full size pick up. The other driver in a small car was killed instantly. (The small car driver was in the wrong, he lost control and crossed the line.)

    Love the reviews.
Why you discriminating against the 1.6 engine. I know, that the engines in your vehicles that side are usually massive in comparison to a country like South Africa.
If this replaces the Nissan Juke as we call it here, it isn't available here anymore and a new smallish Nissan came out in it's place, the Magnite. Try being happy with a 1.0 Turbo. And we have family sized vehicles, our family size or small to medium size that doesn't even have engines bigger than a 1.2 (naturally or as it would be said for more punch a turbo). Lol, and 0.9 Turbo isn't uncommon here either.
A Venue, doesn't even come in any other engine size than a 1.0 Turbo. Be glad, your vehicles have bigger naturally aspirated engines, that should outlast the turbos in our medium size vehicle.
The Kicks would be considered a medium size vehicle, with loads of room. Then again, our parking bays won't allow something like a F150 in it as it would go over the lines.
Would I go for something like this? Maybe, but I believe that if you go for an SUV looking vehicle, it should be big. Then again the CR-V, RAV4 are big SUV. I'd go for something the Patrol if my budget would allow it, make that a Ford Everest with the 7 seats, large boot capacity when the rear seats are flipped down. With all 7 seats up, bigger than the last car I purchased which was manual. I had a compact Chevrolet Spark 1.2, as I just needed something to drive to work to and not worry about long distance travels with 4 or 5 onboard. Yes, rated as a 5 seater and the boot only big enough for me to go on vacation. Taught me how to pack lightly, as the last sedan I owned had a boot space four times that size.
And funny enough, the Kicks would be considered a family sized car here, as the boot capacity would allow a stroller in and some bags. Aka, family sized vehicle for the masses. You'd laugh at the road size and the sizes of cars. Sub Compact are below 3.6m, compact up to about 4m, medium size vehicle up to about 4.5m, above that will be large vehicle. If you drive something the size as in the Ford Ranger, it's supersized and makes the rest of the vehicles on the road look like little toys.
I enjoy when Zack decides to make a comical reference to names of the vehicles, seeing that it has nothing to do with the name the manufacturer decided on. The 1.6 would be an average size engine for South Africa, and okay, the youngsters would tell you that they want something with a massive 2.5 engine. Massive my foot, if I can get my dream car, a V8 5.0 in convertible form. Not much guesses that it has 331kW power and 529Nm of torque. Yes, we use different forms to indicate the power and torque.
Love the your reviews. Can't wait for the next. Most probably not commenting on it, as I do have a never ending version of comments.

Yeah I agree. So sad to see station wagons dissapearing. My 2012 VW Golf Wagon has more cargo space with the back seat down than most SUV's. Too bad VW killed them in 2019.

No car makers will especially North America. The first hatch back that was marketed as a crossover was probably the Toyota matrix though... Haha but everyone saw through that disguise and knew it was a hatchback (loved mine though as it was my first car). Now they will have the corolla cross haha.

looking at getting this as my next ride. I currently drive a 2012 sonic, and is the kicks a step up or a step down from my sonic.? also seeing I drive 90% highway the mileage is what also pulled me towards the Kicks. and the style of console ( where the screen is etc ) is close to what I have now. also with having snow ( live in MB) for 6 months a year seeing the kicks is higher this is another reason I like it. yes I know its not AWD but I never gotten stuck with my sonic either. my concern is the CVT never had a car with one.

My wife wanted to look at these last year when we were car shopping. We test drove one, it was slow, had a bad ride and we found it was loud too. 122HP is not enough for 2021. Its like a throwback to an early 90's underpowered car. I went back to the dealer and told the salesman no thanks. Its ugly too, not as ugly as the Venue but still.

common dude how could you? Sunroofs limit headroom, create additional wind noise inside the car, sunroofs can shutter for no reason and rain on you with glass particles and can cost thousands to replace.

  • @msmoniz
    @msmoniz Před 3 lety +1

See, I'm the exact opposite; take a hatchback CAR and make it look like a utility vehicle(HR-V, CH-R, etc), when it's actually not, and I'm out. This is where a lot of car consumers like to purchase on the self delusion that a CUV is somehow better than a comparable hatchback and overpay for the privilege of that delusion. Well, at least it's keeping many people in the auto industry employed, so that's good thing, while giving rational consumers less hatchback options out there.

And worse on fuel than an equivalent sedan because they present a larger face to the wind and allow more air to tumble underneath.

    • @jiayaw
      @jiayaw Před 3 lety +1

I don't understand crossovers without awd. If that's the case, I would rather get a hatchback which gives similar practicality but handles more like a sedan. I've always liked hatches more than sedans as my first car was a Toyota matrix.
However since I'm not a car enthusiast, I see the value of something like a compact crossover over a compact or midsize sedan. The hatch of a crossover is much more practical than a sedan's trunk(especially when you have kids and strollers) and awd with winter tires makes driving in winter in Canada much safer. I also find the sitting height more comfortable in a crossover for longer trips. So there is value in crossovers. That's my opinion, however if there were more mainstream options that offered wagons with awd, I might prefer than over a crossover.
