- Part one: Sonny Crockett's Wellcraft Scarab 38KV from the hit eighties TV show Miami Vice - fully restored and driven on Lake Erie in 2011. This is the first video I ever made as a marine journalist and was the trip of a lifetime! A 'thumbs up' if you like it would be much appreciated.

Now that's what a sports boat should sound like! Sounds just like a Hemi engined late Sixties Dodge Challenger, but with two motors! Great stuff....

I take it that the deck has been painted to a different color nice in the show the deck is white. Nice work on the restoration. That show made me fall in love with exotic cars, short skirts, and tall heels!!
I've never once seen a Miami Vice boat whether bought or personal use or for the show (they used several) with a white foredeck. Regardless, obviously the boat has been repainted simply due to age.
No, the Scarab was the second boat to be used in the show.
The boat with the white front deck in season 1 was a Chris Craft Stinger 39X. IT WAS THE ORIGINAL MIAMI VICE BOAT!

When I saw this boat the first time in the 80’s I fell in love with Scarab boats. This boat would be useless in Australia, especially where I live in Melbourne due to the rough waters of Bass Strait and the short choppy waters of Port Phillip Bay, my home waters, but I want it. It is a beautiful sleek boat that would blow anything else here out of the water. I’ll never own one but it’s good for an old man to dream.

You really should do a little research, these boats are used for offshore racing in huge chop, they slice right through it.
Not only that but Don Johnson is the only actor in the world to become a champion in a professional sport when he took the world championship racing cigarette boats offshore in 1988.
Buy a stepped-hull Fountain of the same era and you'll never fear swells *or* chop.
@@dukecraig2402 He's not the ONLY actor but he is famous for this also. They built many more better since but this 1 lead the way for popularity. Unless you count Copeland's POPEYES race boat.

I stumbled across this video and thought I would watch it just for the heck of it thinking that it was going to be in Florida and within a minute I noticed the mainland and mouse island and I thought wait a minute this is lake Erie and then put in Bay what a small world I know all world I now live in Naples and used to belong to the Crews Nest

FYI to those people that don't know they used few of these on the show and my friend has one on lake Erie as well. I think it was about a dozen give or take one that they used. If you really want one it's for sale just look for it. around 200k.
this model and paint scheme was available to the public for 225.000 in so fla I know of one in dry storage with low low low hours of run time a total time capsule

People are so ignorant sometimes. The original Miami Vice boat was a Chris Craft. The 38 Scarab is a nice boat but it is NOT the original Miami Vice Boat!

nice boat, however, the original boat was a Chris-Craft 390 stinger. It was replaced by the Scarab 38KV in the second season. I had the same stinger in Red.
You are absolutely correct! Indeed the Chris-Craft 390 Stinger technically appeared in more episodes, as it was in the title sequence. Apparently Wellcraft were offered the chance to supply the boats first and turned it down. After the success of the first series they realised their mistake and made good!
I gotta buy this model of boat. I never knew I needed something so badly.
There are some still left around wellcraft produced 150 kvs so keep your eyes open I saw 2 for sale on boat trader a few months ago not vice colors but kvs

It was his boat, and called My Vice.
There used to be a teacher in Monroe Mi that had one of the boats from the show and the Monroe Evening News did a small pc on him in mid to late 90’s he used to keep it a MBC in Bolles Harbor and people always tried to get photos with it.
Rick brown. Was at DBBC, sold went to Florida. A guy from Cleveland bought it brought it back to Ohio and did a full restoration on it. It was a vice edition, not one of the star boats.

Such an impressive boat and the restoration looks good. Lake Erie is my home lake( 20 min drive, although Huron is 45 min, and Ontario is 1 hour. So all are close). What area was this shot at?

@@AQUAHOLIC Seiko was a guess of mine aswell but the two pushers look like some chrono complication and the whole thing seems to be a bit more sophisticated than a base seiko.

There is a guy from Norway that says he bought Miami vice boat in 2001 or 2002. Is this the same boat or where there more than one?
I heard a little stumble on initial throttle up at 1:01 and another stumble on ramp up at 1:13 sounded like a lean issue possibly, but other than that those 565's sound awesome! This is my favorite boat of all time.

Rico Crockett i read somewhere the owners trying to get rid of it in the Keys, she got hit pretty bad with a storm down there. i’m pretty sure she was going for less than 40k USD? awesome piece of history.

If it is the same boat, they screwed up on the paint job, because it never looked anything like that.
That depends which season you're watching, they used different boats each year which had slightly different colour schemes. Go and look at Season 2, for example 'Out Where The Busses Don't Run (which was this actual boat). czcams.com/video/QEIvgC6Aias/video.html
@@AQUAHOLIC When the title states 'THE ORIGINAL BOAT' that indicates the first Scarab that appeared in the show. This video should have been titled: Driving One of the Miami Vice Scarabs. Sorry, but I am a stickler for accuracy. Just like another video that claims to be the original fake Ferrari Daytona used in the show, where it was only a car used for exterior camera shots as the real hero car had the full Ferrari interior, including dash, seats and manual shifter while the one in the video was still equipped with the standard Corvette interior including an automatic transmission.
While it is still amazing to own something connected to the show, people need to be accurate. Especially as in at least one case, there is a Scarab and a 'Daytona' being sold at the asking price of $20 million, which is completely insane.
It was the first Scarab that appeared in the show. 🙂
