- Not many people recording their thoughts as a longtime MK5 owner on CZcams. Here goes! I personally don't think I will trade my car in just because of the 6-speed, but I believe that it still will be a great car! I plan on driving the 6-speed Supra sometime soon so I will report back with my thoughts. Hopefully that it is good!

Really appreciate your thoughts on things. I was waiting til the MT came out to get a Supra but honestly I can't make a decision. This car will also be my daily so part of me is leaning towards the auto. I've mostly owned manuals and I've daily'd a manual 2020 Miata RF for the past 2 years, giving up that type of experience is tough lol. Although MTs are the bees knees in terms of driver engagement I think the ZF8 is an awesome, awesome auto. Very tough choice to make!
Yes, it definitely is a tough choice. I was torn because the car I had right before the Supra was the FK8 Type R! I loved that car even though it's polarizing with its Gundam looks. I had an AP1 S2000 as well. I honestly don't mind the auto now just because of how convenient it is. Either way, you will win since the MK5 Supra is honestly a great sports car!

You're going to regret getting the auto. I've had the WRX in CVT because I didn't know how to drive manual, I traded it in 10k miles in for a next year manual. Best choice I've ever made even in hour long traffic. Although I've never driven a fast auto before, a manual is a world apart in engagement. I might have to test drive the auto.

Got this car in Auto as a secondary vehicle, not a fan of convertibles unless it has a hard top, so this car is a great choice personally. With more money to burn a Lotus Emira is enticing, but a v6 and some options can easily cost 90k-120k, the oil change is also a painful process requiring body panels to come off; also very difficult to allocate parts. Corvette C8 Z06 would be the ideal car, but again that's basically the price of two Supras. The ZF8 is a great transmission used in a lot of good cars, including Porsche, Maserati, Rolls Royce, and Lamborghini
Same. Targa tops > convertibles all day. Only convertible I would consider is the S2000. The Emira is beautiful, but I completely agree with your points. It would just get annoying trying to change the oil yourself. I'm so impressed with the ZF8 and it feels great in my friend's old Aston.
Great video, I'm in the market for a supra, and I still can't decide between an AT or MT either. I already have a daily drive car but I'm not proficient yet in driving an MT.
my only future concerns are the heavy traffic and hills where i stay. what are your thoughts about that?
Thanks! If your daily driver is an auto, then you could go the manual route. HOWEVER, I have met some folks who bought a manual sports car because they have a daily and they ended up wanting to drive their manual sports car more than their daily.
If there is heavy traffic where you stay, it will be a huge pain in the ass just driving back and forth. I can just say that from experience. Even if the car you drive shifts smooth and the clutch isn't too crazy, there will be days where you will just want to press the gas and brakes and not deal with the gear changes. If you're in a hilly area, I would recommend the ZF8.
If you're still unsure at that point, I would say reach out to your friends who have manual cars local to you and see what their experiences are. I hope that helps

I’m going to buy a AT MK5 when the time comes. I’ve driven manual sports cars all my life (previous mk4 owner). I just want something easy to drive.
I've heard it from both sides! People on social media are either ZF8-centric or 6-speed, either way, the car is fun with either trans.
I just picked up a 2023 Supra A91. When it's your daily or primary vehicle yes automatic 1000%. If it's a weekend driver or fun car manual all day.

Would you consider ppf essential or just ceramic coat? My A91 should be at the dealer within a week or so. Lucky getting at MSRP.
I would say essential. Ceramic coat won’t protect you from paint chips or rock chips like PPF. Congrats on the A91! Definitely enjoy it.

I was one of those people that was hating on the mk5 for not having a manual and said I would buy one if they made one. So now Toyota has forced my hand, waiting for mine to arrive at my dealership now. I will be daily driving it too, don't trust my FD as a daily XD

Auto is more fun for daily drive and comfort. NSX, GTR, and M4 were auto and enjoyed it. Only two cars that I had manual were Miata and 370N Nismo, fun too.
Yeah 100%. I love my manuals and dailied a manual for many years and I personally will stick with auto for daily driving and for comfort especially during traffic hours.
Awesome video! I’m in the market for a supra and somewhat divided. I currently own a gt350 with an awesome gearbox. I’m thinking of switching to a supra, but heard the feel of the manual was just ‘meh’ compared to the gt350, and keep hearing how awesome the automatic is. I’ve never had an automatic sports car, so I figure this might be the right choice. Plus, the wife can drive it too.

I live in LA, and I work kinda far so I’m in traffic every day. A manual sounds really really really fun! But, when it’s 6pm and I’m sleepy as hell and I have an hour drive ahead of me, an automatic would be fun and practical 😭 but a manual is real shit 😂😂😂
I feel sorry that you have to deal with the LA traffic, I can't imagine that lol! I don't blame you though, you're tired and you just want to go home, you don't want to be dealing with a manual with an hour commute back!! Manual at the end of the day for pure enjoyment is indeed the real shit!

I got into an accident WHILE I WAS STOPPED because the guy behind me wasn’t paying attention.. and there’s accident everyday 😭 I love my city, but it’s true, were wreckless drivers. And I say we because I’m in it till the end lol

I mean, I have a 335i with trans tuned on XHP stage 3. Its fast, its awesome, but I still find myself wishing it was a manual at times.
Yeah, I'm right there with you Randall. It would be crazy if someone put Koeniggsegg's new "manual and automatic" transmission in the MK5. What a pipe dream! If I win the lottery, would definitely get a manual one to compliment my auto.
I would like to own both the manual and auto. I used to own older supras; mk2 and mk3s. I wish I never sold them because they are now selling for 10x more than what I sold them. I got a feeling these will be future collector cars. I would like to manual but only if I can get it at msrp. If not, I'll just wait till the hype dies down.
How did you like your MK3s? My friend has a MK3 and MK4 and he said he enjoys the MK3 more. The manual one will definitely be worth a pretty penny in the future.
@@VinceChristmastree I bought a 87 non turbo manual and a 90 turbo manual from a widow who's husband died. And she wanted them out of her yard. They both had blown head gaskets and other issues and I bought the pair for $500. This was back in 2002. I've rebuilt both cars and restored them close to mint condition and kept them factory specs with no mods other than a metal head gasket. I sold my 87 for $2500 and my 90 for $3000 in 2004 due to financial issues. I wouldn't have sold them if I hadn't needed the money. A year later I bought a 85 auto for $1000. Even though it didn't have a turbo, it felt faster than my mk3s from a dig because it was lighter. But I blew the engine racing a motorcycle. I was going to do a 7mgte swap but lost interest and parted it out. I haven't owned a sports car since. I've been driving a economy cars to save gas and money. Now I'm 40 and my house is paid off. Now it's time to bring a supra back into my life. I don't care it has a bmw engine. I want it!
@@VinceChristmastree I couldn't afford a mk4. All because of that movie. But I prefer the style of the mk3s anyways. The new supras remind me more of the mk3s than the mk4s due to it being wingless and it having a long hood. The only thing I didn't like from the mk3s was its handling around curves and they were very heavy. As a daily driver and a road trip car the were great.

I have ordered a Manual Supra.. I wouldn't ever consider an Auto one. Have driven them in Auto. No doubt a good Auto and sure it's faster but definitely not a drivers car with an Auto transmission.
No worries! Yeah completely agree as a car guy, the ultimate driver's cars are 6-speeds.
I am 48. I have 5 other cars. My daily is a 2019 Audi s5 coupe. I got the Supra as a fun car. I love the auto, same transmission in my Audi. The Supra has become my daily now. I have a manual Tacoma, but I don't really see a purpose for a manual Supra. The ZF shifts super fast.

That's not too bad compared to a lot of other cars! The Hyundai Palisade is like a 2 year wait apparently.
Since I already have a Mazda MX5 PRHT that is a fantastic drop-top canyon carver, my 2024 Supra therefore, had to be automatic. Sipping on a coffee or water bottle is easy in my Supra.....not so much in the Mazda.
Good point, if you want a manual, you have the secondary car that you can just jump in. I drove friend's MX5 2 years ago and it was a fun car.

My old 600hp sti and 600hp 350z were both manuals (both sold). I also had an Auto 350z and the transmission was horrible. I'm getting the 2023 Supra and torn between the manual than auto. I track a lot and I know manual won't be as fast, both on drag and track. I'm currently 60% for auto and 40% manual. As for you, you have zero reason to trade in. You have the faster of the two.
Oh man, that's a shame that the 350z was like that. I've heard great things about the 6 speed through, interestingly enough, I have never driven a 350/370z! I personally think the deciding factor is do you want more engagement at the track and also on the street or are you set out for all out speed?
ZF8 is lightning fast on track and smooth on the street, but the manual would obviously be more fun/exciting on track and depending if you're in the city or not, it'll be either cumbersome or enjoyable. Once you get one, reach back out to me because I'm honestly curious on how someone's experience is with the car if they track it a lot!!
Yeah my 2023 allocation is an automatic for health reasons. But it’s in that new blue over black leather

Yeah, definitely do that! Everyone definitely needs to ride or drive one before making a decision. They're not cheap to begin with so it would suck to buy something so expensive and not enjoying it.

Funny you mention that, I was just looking at ISFs since they seem pretty sick! I just picked up a GS350 F Sport and I've been loving it. Evos are getting more rare especially if they're well-kept. Tough choice!

I never owned an automatic car in my life, but my new supra is automatic. its got paddle shifters, can you can kind of manually shift. I think there are a lot of complainers out there. Put your money where your mouth is and buy the 6 speed manual. For me unless I am doing track days 8spd automatic is fine and will be fine for 80% of people.
The ZF8 is considered to be the 2nd best automatic transmission right behind the PDK. Glad people are actually buying it, but now I laugh the haters are all quiet now that the reviews are out on how fantastic the 6-speed is. The radar cruise control paired with the ZF8 is so damn good that you'd be hard pressed to find something wrong with it.
@@VinceChristmastree I didn’t even know about the lane safety and adaptive cruise control, it’s so good, the car practically drives itself, well impressed with it. Too many critical thinkers out there and/or car reviewers that have lost touch with reality lol
@@slamtheman Yeah! The lane keeping assist can be annoying and I know a lot of people turn it off, but it honestly doesn't even bother me lol. Yeah it's tough to find a car reviewer nowadays that's not some shill for the brand they are reviewing.
I daily a manual WRX. My dad just bought a cvt WRX recently. The cvt is pretty boring to drive even with all the driver tech/assistance.
I will try to drive manual until I die unless i get a bad left leg.
Completely understandable! I've driven the CVT WRX and it's ass. The ZF8 is top 2 with the Porsche PDK. I'm eager to try out the 6-speed MK5 and I will compare it with the FK8 Type R, STI (3 generations), C7Z, S2K.
The MK5 is the best One 6SP 2023 SUPRA TURBO So Nice!

I believe so, I think if it’s documented on the dealer level, Toyota will replace the engine.

True! There's some I read about selling at MSRP, but those were accounted for due to the person knowing the owner of the dealership or the sales manager.

if the supra is your only car that the zf8 makes sense but alot of sport car owner owns another car for daily purposes and somthing like c class 3 series or even a camary will be a heck alot better at daily driving then the auto supra will ever be.
Well obviously a 4 door car will be a better daily than the Supra lol. The point of me daily driving it is that it is possible. No one will really want to watch someone daily driving a Camry, 3 series, or C-class.
From all the reviews the manual was felt as the way the car was ment to be. Oh and don't forget anti theft deterrent, most people have no clue how to drive a manual now.
Yeah, I actually say that in my video where I drive the car so definitely check that out! I still don't know why Toyota waited, but oh well...at least we have it now!

I don't think the ZF8 is THAT fast, but it is pretty fast. Could probably get 2-3 gear changes in before a normal gear change.

I've been telling people these facts over and over again. The ZF8 is far superior. Manual fan boys just won't give it up. I was one myself until I realized the pro's over the manual. Happy '22 Supra AUTOMATIC owner. You will never shift as fast as the ZF8. I'm really glad you mentioned babayaga too because he wrecks almost just about everything. Manual won't even come close.
Yeah it's still insane that there are some people that keep denying the facts, but thankfully a large majority of people I talk to don't contest it. Glad you're enjoying the car! Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment!

Great point! Pure speed, ZF8 is the way to go. Driving feel and just for having fun, 6-speed for sure. Not saying that the ZF8 isn't enjoyable because I am definitely enjoying mine! Love the RS3 by the way! It's super super clean.

Manual all the way, only purists understand. You don’t buy this car to be a “comfortable daily driver in LA traffic”. You are buying it because you know eventually, these cars will cease to exist and we will all be driving EV’s and unable to heel toe downshift.
True! The car can definitely go both ways. With the amount of miles I put on it as a daily driver, there are days where I just want to chill and cruise. However, there are also days where I miss rowing gears. Hopefully I get lucky with my career choices and I can snag one before they go extinct!

To be honest you don't need a manual. I feel like the car community has over hyped the whole manual transmission.
The only reason to buy a manual is if you are going to use this on a track.
Logically when you want to sell this one day and its a manual it would be VERY difficult to find a buyer.
Day to day driving is going to be annoying with a manual transmission.
You're not wrong about the hype. However, I don't agree with you that the only reason to buy a manual is if you're going to use it on a track. Plenty of enthusiasts just want the ability to row their own gears without any computer trying to dictate things.
I think initially it will be hard to find a buyer for a manual Supra within the first 3-5 years of the release, but as time goes on and newer manual cars get more and more rare, then it will go up in price.
Perfect example of this would be the S2000, 6-speed MK4 Supras, etc. Those were already on the rise in prices even before the whole chip shortage thing. I appreciate the time you took to comment your thoughts! I love these kind of conversations.

A dealer a couple hours away from me is getting a 6-speed in this week. They’re asking $90K when I asked. Almost $100K out the door after everything 🫣
Fuck that. I love this car and glad that the manual is actually getting some love with the reviews, but this car is not worth anywhere close to that.
You can’t even order any supras, what they send is what you get from Toyota and you won’t get one at msrp
