We Don't Appreciate the Toyota Supra Enough

- My fondness for the Toyota Supra has grown over time, and now that I've gotten to live with it on three separate occasions, I can safely say that I'm smitten by it. Sure, there's the BMW Z4 connection, the fact that the Nissan Z exists, the Chevy Camaro is faster, some version of the Ford Mustang GT are, too... But the Supra distills a number of attributes that we enthusiasts prize into a winning formula. Now that my children are getting older and one of them can drive herself around, I can once again realistically live with a two seat sports car. The Toyota Supra just might be my first choice in this situation... See my progression of emotion in the reviews below, and check out some of the Toyota Supra's closest competitors as well.

had my supra for 2 months now. It just feels special. I used to have an integra gsr and then a 370z. all soulful, and so is the supra. its like a legendary pokemon
That’s a good way to put it!
Great video. Fell in love with the Supra last year. It puts a huge smile on my face every time I take it out and I’ve found it turns more heads than any car/bike I’ve ever owned too.
True story: the first time I tested one, I was picking up my daughter from volleyball and I guy in a brand new Porsche 911 pulls up next to me and goes, “wow, that’s a nice Supra…” There’s just something about it, I guess. 😉
Hows it holding up?
@@Rocket9944 so far so good. Almost 8k miles and just basic ToyotaCare maintenance so far (e.g., oil change). I did have the dealer fix a small gap in the driver side door panel
It really is an amazing car. The 8-speed auto is so impressive. Best auto I’ve ever driver. Lightening fast shifts and it downshifts perfectly.
You’re absolutely right. Personally, I’d take the auto in the Supra given the choice. Thanks for watching 🙏🏻
It's like a good marriage between the GR86 and the LC had a baby born (and raised) in Germany (!) Thanks for doing this...
Hahaha! See?! When you put it that way, the Supra sounds AWESOME!
If you hate the Supra you need to go outside, go for a drive, and touch some grass. Outside of the internet and 20 year old boy racers this car is loved.
Haha! Not untrue. Really don’t understand how someone could flat out not like this car.
I love driving mine everyday!
It’s a likable car, but the Supra name has 30 years of pent of demand for a new Toyota engine to be in it.
@@diversityandcomicsbear2625 That demand would be crushed when the price tag is well over 100k for something like that. See the Lexus LFA. Most people complaining about it would never be able to afford the car they claim they want.
FACTS
I have no regrets buying mine. I like it better than my Evo VIII and X, GTO, plus all the friends cars I've ever driven
Then on top of that the performance delivery to cost of the vehicle. In today's new car standards, it's a rewarding deal. Do some modifications and you can get to near supercar performance for less cost.
Nice! Glad to hear it. If I wasn't such a Corvette nut, I'd probably get one of these as well. I really like it that much. Thanks for watching!
Same people who are crying about the MKV will be wanting one liked how the MKIV is wanted now. I am old enough to remembered the hate for the MKIV.
This is true. I have a C5 Corvette, and a lot of the people who crapped on it for one reason or another sure wish they had one now.
People also forgot that a brand new MKIV wasn't cheap. Adjusted for inflation, the MKV is cheaper and with way better tech, and while the powertrain isn't as tough as the 2JZ, the B58 is a hell of a motor and makes more power stock for stock.
I've always told people that even on release, the MKV is a worth successor to the Supra name. It just needs that third pedal, which it finally got. I plan to get one soon.
I love my supra. It's beautiful in my eyes. Its extremely nimble and playful. Just a good package all around. The interior is built with quality and the b58 motor is a real pleasure to ring out. The Supra will be missed when it's gone.
It really is a great all around package. Thanks for watching 🙏🏻
I'm getting my Supra next week, so excited.
Nice! Glad to hear it!
Gorgeous video. You should have 1,000,000 followers
Why thank you! And thanks for watching 🙏🏻
Love your channel 👍🏻 Yes that Supra with the B58 married to the 8 speed auto should be considered the benchmark other engine builders should covet. Had it in a 2020 BMW 440ix coupe that showed me the light on what an awesome combination tune of engine and transmission should be like.
QUESTION:
How come other manufacturers don’t just go buy the B58 and use it? Love my Genesis GV70 & G80, great products but could you imagine how much better those would be with the B58? Until someone else can get that kind of performance and efficiency from a 3.0 inline 6 turbo…just go buy theirs and put them in your badge!
My guess is because BMW is protectionist when it comes to their powertrains whereas GM sprinkled the goodness of the LS V8 all over the world like manna from heaven. You could still buy the LS7 up until this year, which is nuts. Since the Supra is basically just a BMW Z4, Toyota doesn't really have any rights to use the engine as they see fit. They more or less just have the rights to put a different body on a Z4 and call it a Supra... for better or worse. I'm a fan, but I know it bugs some people. I think it shows not only how awesome the LS motor is but also how cool GM is for offering it as a crate engine with no questions asked.
Good vid sir. Keep it up
Thank you so much! Will do!
Totally share the vibe. Great engine, great styling, great performance on a great chassis. Comes manual, RWD and around the 400hp mark. It's priced a little high considering the quality of the interior, if I had to state a gripe.
Absolutely right. And I can live with the interior considering the performance per dollar.
For as long as I could remember I wanted a mkiv supra, when this car dropped I instantly fell in love but wasn’t in the right place financially to buy. Plus I had a feeling a manual would come out eventually. Now I’m waiting for my allocation. I want this car more than a mkiv the size, the looks, the fact that I’m buying new…. I can’t wait
Nice! Congrats! I hope you love it 🙏🏻
Congrats. I should be picking up my 2023 Supra manual next week. I can't wait.
@@chrisginoc that’s what’s up bro! Still waiting on mine. No word yet starting to get a little impatient. What color/portion did you get? I got renaissance red premium
@@Jayflex23 That red looks good! Congrats. I ended up with the A91 in cu later grey. Ive never seen it in person so hopefully I like it 🤞🏼
That's one beast machine! I still love the old one. That old one and R34 just timeless.
Don't mention B58. Some of my friends start talking about if for hours, then days and now it's years! 😂
Hahaha! I know people like that. Thanks for watching 🙏🏻
The nissan Z is what would've also happened to the Supra if they stayed in house.
Maybe. I think the GR Corolla proves otherwise, though. If Toyota had been willing to create the platform, I think an in-house Supra could’ve been great, but a one-off sports car platform doesn’t make a lot of economic sense these days (except for the Corvette).
@@jax1079 I imagine an In-house Supra would have been priced outside my comfort range. I think Toyota did it right with this partnership and glad to see videos like yours finally giving it the nod it deserves.
@@UCLAKoolman Thanks! I just think we should appreciate a sports car for existing at this point, and we should be even happier when it’s pretty damn great. Thanks for watching 🙏🏻
@@jax1079 This is exactly what keyboard warriors don't understand. This isn't the same world my dad brought us up in with Toyota in the late 80s and early 90s. Toyota wanted to cut cost and the partnership made sense now. This happens all the time - they hate it when it's here and miss it when it's gone. I grew up in the JDM world of the 90s and early 2000s. I remember some people weren't as fond of the MK IV when it was out and as production ended more and more people wanted it. Human nature that we want it more when we can no longer have it
Great video, this is my 2nd Supra - 2020 Supra and now in a 2023 Toyota Supra MT (SE- Cu later). MT > AT …hands down
Actually agreed to trade it in for a 2023 ZL1, let’s see if I regret it but couldn’t pass up an opportunity at a supercharged V8 😬
Dynamically, I think the Camaro is superior (nearly all track comparisons show a significant advantage over the Supra), but I think the Supra certainly feels more “special.” It’s kind of a win win. I’m jealous 😂
Can you toggle the auto engine cut off?
Yes, and you’ll want to. It’s super annoying
Saw one other CZcams video by a guy called @Gonin60 on here where he said if you’re above 6ft just forget about buying it owner an A91-MT 2023 Supra as he said headroom is not the problem but you will really struggle with leg room in it.
That immediately dismayed me and I had to begin reconsidering which other car I can buy as my new car being that I’m coming from a BMW background, the B58 immediately caught my attention.
So I’m surprised that your 6ft6 and your legs aren’t cramped nor do your knees hit the steering column or rub on the gear level as a result
Sooo... I'm not going to say it's not a tight fit because it is, and I also mention that I would take the automatic since operating a clutch in the limited amount of space would be unpleasant, but people taller than 6'2" can easily fit in the driver's seat. (As I said, the passenger seat is a different story....) Also, and I mean this seriously, it's not a car for fat people. If you are a husky 6'2" or more, you will not fit. There isn't much room to spare. Hope that helps clarify. Thanks for watching!
What year is this model you driving?
2022 in that video, I believe
I like your opinion. My fully loaded red auto supra is 300 miles away ready to be picked up by a trucker
Nice! Hope you dig it. My opinion auto is the way to go, even though that’s an unpopular opinion 😂 Thanks for watching 🙏🏻
@@jax1079absolutely, it's the smart way to go for a daily driver. I used to commute my s2000 to downtown Chicago for 4 years. absolutely hated manual in bumper to bumper traffic. Texting, drinking coffee and getting something out of my pocket wasn't very user friendly in a manual.
I D C About how fast it goes that's just speeding tickets. Im more into the 500 watt JBL 12 speaker stereo and how it sounds
Put two 12s in the back and an Alpine head unit in it and it’ll be perfect
Every hater has never driven one. And most of them can’t even afford one. #changemymind
You make a good case...
Just like the Lexus F cars - nobody appreciates them until they are gone.
Ain’t that the truth!
I think they've always been appreciated, just too expensive for those who love them. Like I adore the LC500. Not gonna pay over 100k for one. It's just too much for me.
I would get the 4
How dare you
Camero or stang aren't faster... unless it's the ZL1/gt500
The SS 1LE is faster around a track and costs less than the Supra.
The most misunderstood car in automotive history by Toyota purists and internet trolls. Life is too short. Enjoy what you drive.
Very true. The Supra is a damn good car that got too caught up in people's stupid expectations.
@@jax1079 It was also very hard to follow up the MKIV and match those legendary unrealistic expectations. Once we look at the MKV through a the lense of an affordable sports car and not something trying to be better than 90’s jdm cars, is when we can actually enjoy it.
@@chrisginoc completely agree 👍🏻 We have another great sports car in the world, at a time when many are disappearing. That's reason enough to celebrate it.
I like it but a big reason for enthusiasts buying Japanese cars is because they are Japanese. There's a history of JDM cars having great performance, reliability, and massive aftermarket scene. I can't buy one because it's not Japanese. If i wanted a euro then I'd go get one. No offense to the supra owners though, it's a nice car if you don't mind what i said above.
All true, and I’m sure there are quite a few people who feel that way as well. That said… stay tuned this week for a little more Supra content 😉👍🏻
The B58 is honestly such a good engine but it's in so many vehicles nowadays that it just doesn't feel special. Good, just not special. The EA855 in the RS3 is special. The G16E-GTS in the GR Yaris is special. Nothing wrong with throwing an incredible powerplant in a Supra, but with a name like the Supra, it should have been something more special and unique, not something in countless other cars out there. It would have been amazing if Toyota had made a new halo sports car and call it something completely different and drop the B58 in that instead because I love the new Supra. It sounds great and drives great. Just not special.
Totally get what you’re saying, but remember that the 2JZ wasn’t bespoke necessarily. Versions of the JZ straight sixes appeared in numerous Toyota products worldwide. In some ways it was more like the LS1, which is itself one of the great engines of all time… yet LS engines were EVERYWHERE. I think your distinction between good and special is a VERY interesting topic, though. Maybe I need to make a video about that…. 😉👍🏻
@@jax1079 Looking forward to more videos. Cheers!
As a toyota fanboy, we will never accept the BMW supra just like we hardcore fans won’t accept the Subaru BRZ if you want a Supra from Toyota in 2023 get a LC500
I can understand this, especially since the LC 500 is such a fantastic machine, but we live in a world of marketing so nothing is sacred anymore. 😜
Please you ain't got a 100k Lexus in your driveway. I make over 300k and I don't want to spend that much on a slow Lexus.
@@kobedabest then I guess u need to make a little more so u can afford one.
