I remember when you first got Leon, everyone and their sister was telling you how to raise Leon and that you were maintaining his tank incorrectly -- seeing your son set up his jellyfish lab makes me realize how much experience you've had with aquatics, probably way more than anyone commenting at the time lol. You didn't race to prove anyone wrong, or prove your knowledge, you're just a humble dude.

It’s always the few Reddit, Facebook and some fish keeping or related topic forum people who act as if it’s their way or the high way. And very often times the same people do not even own the species that they’re critiquing on said husbandry. There’s a lot that can be said about how some hobbyists gatekeep aquatics fo no reason. A lot of it is not rocket science.

Every time i put birdseed in my feeders, i tap the empty cup on the side of the feeder in a rat-a-tat pattern that's the same each time.
The birds will come flying to the tree from all over the place, the minute they hear me tapping out that rhythm.

There used to be a cardinal who would tap on the glass of my bedroom window if I slept in, and was late with the sunflower seeds. He was definitely calling me and wasn't fighting with his reflection. He'd fly down to the sill, peck a few times, then hop back to a nearby branch to wait. Repeating until I opened the window and gave him his tablespoon of seeds.

When you said you check the water in the buckets for creatures after cleaning the aquarium- yes, I feel the pain. I don't have an aquarium, only a pond, but it's so amazing how many creatures are in there. Usually a pond is not much work. But whenever I do just a little cleanup and reduce the overgrowth of plants, I have to sit for hours to pick all the newts, newt larvae, firefly larvae, water bugs, water snails etc that I don't want to end up on the compost. So much effort, but I wouldn't want this on my conscience. 😕 After all, this is why we want these little biomes, to watch the living creatures thrive.

As someone who has TNR-ed for over 20 years, I can say, most feral adult cats CAN be tamed. Keep them separated from the other cats, isolated, and use a bath brush to touch them when you get to that point. Eventually, you should be able to substitute a hand. Some of the best cats I've had were ex-ferals. More loving and loyal than cats you raise from kittens, though they do retain some skittish reactions.

Birds will definitely sound the "dinner bell" if it's a regular feeding spot and food is being put out lol. You'd think they'd keep quiet so there would be more food for them, but I think they just get so excited and happy that they can't help but to start singing and calling. You'd also be surprised about the the networking some types of birds have with small groups of each other, even to where they'll take turns being the one bird who sticks around to watch for feeding time at a particular site in order to then be able to alert all the others who are off looking for food elsewhere in the interim.

Naming the feral mama cat Freya is actually so fitting! In Norse mythology, Freya's chariot is pulled by two cats rather than horses. I think it's a great name. As for the hermit crab and its arrangement of shells, I feel as though some creatures (including them) know when their time is coming and will do what makes them most comfortable as it draws near. It may have moved back into the old shell because it was more comfortable to it, like an old shoe that fits better than the new one, despite being worn out. The extra shell is a bit of a question mark though- it may have been that the whelk shell had a crack or weak point that it was trying to cover. Or maybe the sea urchin habit of 'wearing' shells is starting to catch on! Awesome video as always.

I know you really appreciate hearing how this series has impacted people's lives. So I felt that I would explain how leon and this series has helped me stay connected with my partner despite us living on different continents.
Both me and my partner have been struggling with loneliness for most our lives, but through chance found each other regardless. My partner then later introduced me to Leon th lobster, and we have connected even more over our shared love for the lovely creature, even with this video we sat in front of our respective screens together and watched it.
Without this series I think the distance would have felt so much bigger, but luckily we didn't end up having to know that.
Many other stressful things have happened, I found out I have a cyst in my brain, and the prospect of potentially needing surgery to fix it made us decide to finally find a date for when we could meet in person.
I know both me and my partner have permanent conditions that limit our lives in fairly noticeable ways, and for me at least. To see Jett who's missing one of his legs still be loved despite that disability be perhaps even more loved because of this limit as well as him living his best life, it gives me a lot of hope and motivation to keep going despite all the obstacles. But also just Leon himself, to see him go from the scared little thing to so clearly being happy and thriving. It's been a genuinely special experience, even from behind a computer screen.
So just to summarise, these videos have helped us so incredibly much in finding hope and love. And I just wanted you to know that

We need to start holding people and companies accountable and treating our earth better. The second unsettling part is that our society has become so rotten that vandals feel no compunction about creating hateful trash, simply because they’ve never been held accountable for bad behavior or actions. This is not kids will be kids, this is willful destruction, simply because there is no values or morality taught. Again, America needs to do better.

Yes, it is very possible to tame a feral cat. You just have to have her vet checked for diseases after you capture her, isolate her in a small room, like a bathroom with food, water a bed and toys. Everyone will get used to each other’s scent, and then you can start to give her more room to roam. If you just give her space, she will eventually begin to trust you. She may not trust you completely, but she should start to warm up to you. We have had several feral cats come into our house and some never completely trust us, but will come and sit beside us. We just have to give them their space, and let them evolve on their own. We accept them for who they are.

I love all the Leon updates! It’s the first thing I watched when I got home from work today, and my four cats watched with me! Thank you for feeding the birds. And yes, birds DO communicate with each other when a food source is found! Chickadees, Titmice, Nuthatches, Cardinals etc.. all have different calls to say “Hey everybody, there’s food over here!”. 🙂

Every time i get a Leon notification i stop everything to settle in and watch...you never disappoint Mr. Brady Brandwood! Still really enjoying the exploration videos around your area. Such a different eco system from where i live in Colorado where if something disturbs a natural area it can take decades to recover if ever. What beautiful country you have there! I also love seeing how all the cats are doing especially now since both of my fur babies recently crossed the rainbow 🌈 bridge due to old age. My female looked a lot like your black female with the pretty ruff...in fact almost identical except my Sweetpea was huge in size and weighed 18 lbs without a speck of fat on her! I feel kind of empty without them now. Anyways, thanks again for the update, may your days be blessed 🙌 😊✌️

I am right with you there! I’m only 48 years old, but I am disabled. Last year my 32-year-old parrot died of old age, and I am still in deep grief over it. I’ve had him since I was 16 years old. I’ve also lost two dogs that I loved with all my heart. I cannot longer take care of animals to the extent that they deserve, and it hurts my heart because I love animals with all of my being. I’ve been a vegetarian for over three decades because of how much I love animals. My home is so damn quiet now, and I have no one to talk to here anymore… It’s awful!

17:00 Your shrimp has eggs, they may by now have already hatched into their plankton stage and either eaten or filtered before settling onto the substrate. I don't know how long this takes bit they go through several molts.
I kept a 75-gallon marine tank similar to yours, I used a Magnum cannister filter mainly for aeration and some filtration, I never vacuumed the coral gravel because my reasoning was, it wasn't done in a natural marine environment, I had great water quality and no troublesome algae, I only added fresh water treated to remove any chemicals from our city water source. I had a large mat of grape caulerpa (Caulerpa lentillifera) and daylight lights. My only resident was a 18" snowflake moray eel that would eat shrimp from your fingers.
I had a 10-gallon marine tank I used water from Dyes Inlet, this one was unheated, I only added treated fresh water and it had polyps from likely from the genus Metridium, plankton and other tiny life. I miss having a marine tank, but I don't have the space.

The cat with a scarf is most likely part Norwegian Mountain Cat or possibly Maine Coon. It is also likely that the kittens had different fathers as cats can get pregnant by multiple males at the same time. Thank you for rescuing them! It would be possible to tame the mother! One was named Paleface. She had a pale orange face mask. She was the easiest to tame. I was the first to pet her. We didn’t know at the time but she was pregnant. The other was named Blackie. There werent really any other visitors at the point yet but we got in through one of the building connecting to it. My friend said her older brother had a job working there. We never saw him but we went up to one of the ride operators and told him that we were told by Jimmy (her brother) that we could get free rides. The guy asked us "Do you mean Bill?? Large guy, big stomach and big beard" I just answered yes even though we had no idea who Bill was. He gave us the free ride. We rode every ride in the park that morning for free just by dropping Bills name. What a happy memory to find buried deep in my brain. Thanks for that.

I had a phase where I got really into cat genetics for a while. When black cats have silver collars and undercoats, they’re called Smokes. It’s caused by the inhibitor gene, which is also responsible for silver tabbies, which is what Bunny looks to be. It’s recessive, so it could be that mom was homozygous and dad was heterozygous or vice versa. Either way, they’re great cats.

    • @thewitchbasket
      @thewitchbasket Před 3 měsíci +2

Looking at mama cat, she seems to be a dilute tortoiseshell. This means that she has both black and red fur that have been “diluted” into being grey and a sort of pink color. If she had a smoke kitten, she’s probably the heterozygous inhibitor carrier. She doesn’t have much white, but cats only need a little bit to pass it onto some of their kittens, so Bunny probably got his from his mom.

It’s entirely possible for a mom cat to have a litter from multiple dad cats. eggs can be fertilized at different times. I rescued a litter and a few of those siblings had different DNA than each other by 50%. Very interesting to see - but I agree with a few others that Bunny looks like his mom cat. Jet and his sister look like they have the same dad for sure. Certain genes might not have expressed in Bunny. Out of the 7 babies I rescued there were 3 distinct fathers, but two of the kittens who looked nothing alike were 100% related

Brady, may The Good Lord bless you for the way you care for His sweet creatures!!!
I had someone with animal control in my area, tell me the best way to tame a feral cat. She said that you need to put a big cage with them in it, food, litter, in the middle of your busiest room. That way they have absolutely no place to hide, will still feel an element of protection and have no choice but to get acclimated to their new situation and see there really isnt any threat for them eiher. I would put a couple of dog crates together if I were you to acclimate Jets mom. Plus for her to be in the same surroundings as her babies will make her adjust faster.
Like everyone, I love your beautiful videos!

Hi Brady! Love your videos! The hermit crab could have died of what we call shell stress. I have had hermit crabs for over 20 years, and shell change time is always difficult. I provide many shells of a couple close sizes - I usually size up a smidge bigger than their big claw. The shells I provide have different shaped openings. Hermit crabs are really picky! To that end, they often have buyer’s remorse after a shell change - they loved it at first but after a few minutes to hours to days, they decide they don’t care for it much after all…. And they switch again; sometimes back into their original shell or decide on a new one. This is a really stressful process for them (hence providing many options for shell changes - increasing the chance they find a shell they love) and sometimes the stress is too much; I think that is what likely happened here. The little one may not have been really resilient either. Hugs to you, your fur babes, Leon, and aquatic friends! ❤

They have a specific kind of chirps combined with a specific number of "dee dee dees" to announce when I fill the feeder, when I go out or come into the house, when the cats goes out, and who knows what else. Other birds and even squirrels seem to pick up on this language.
