We just got back from the Sturgis Rally, while there we saw that BMW had a large display right on the main drag with all their wares on display as well as demo bikes. Was so glad they were there as I love all kinds of motorcycles. We rode the R18 Transcontinental, and the K1600 GTL. As an owner of a 2012 GL1800 Goldwing, I was juxtaposing our GL to what BMW had to offer. One thing for sure the storage capacity of the GL smokes the K1600. Now I do understand the K1600 is more of a sport tourer, and wouldn’t quite have the storage capacity. With that said, I loved K1600 it is an absolute beast when it comes to power and handling. The icing on the cake was that the wife was actually comfortable while riding two up! If money were no object I’d have both in my garage.

Cruiseman - Watched all the videos you did comparing the two bikes! Extremely helpful and the key thing you said that separated the two bikes for me was the performance aspect. I am a performance focused guy even at my age (56) so you made my decision. I just ordered the same exact bike you demo'd, the 2022 BMW K 1600 GTL with the same 719 option package. Now I really didn't need the white paint (ya crazy expensive) in the 719 option but it was all they had in the pipeline so it had to be so. Who knows, ride this one for a year or so and maybe it will turn into a Goldwing once I put some miles on it. It is a hard decision...legacy of the Honda is beyond great but there was something about the performance of the BMW that swung me over to give it a shot. Great videos and thanks. Now if the dealer will get the bike delivered before the 2024 model year starts, then I will get to see if I made a good (there really is no right) decision especially when plunking down $37K out the door. Oh ya..and they do not have much in the way of deals in the current market except maybe they will wash it and fill the tank before you leave the floor with it.

I have a 2018 Goldwing DCT Tour and found using the WingStuff trunk and saddlebags liners worked great and make it easy to carry stuff into hotel when traveling.

After owning both, the GW is the bike to own, on all levels. On top of that, a pleasure to work on the GW compare to K. Hands down to Honda !!!!!
@@veilleurmarket4143 Its not an issue for me to remove the bags or not. I use the GW as a commuter bike and it serves me all around. For the overall bike I got compare to the K, its a no brainer for me. I have 15K on her now. I never ever even once, went to the dealer for anything. Zero issues!!!! Great to work on and easy too. Parts are reasonable , always available. The K, on the same miles, I was running to the dealer like I am riding home from work. Always something was going on. Moreover, for a 6'4" rider as myself, the GW is a no brainer. Super comfortable, enough power, if needed in Sport Mode, rides like a Cadillac. I will never ever go on a K again...period, done, end of story. Enjoy whatever you ride.
Love everything about my 2005 k1200lt for many reasons over my 2015 k1600gtl exclusive and 2018 goldwing
The helmets will fit, but they must lay on their sides. I fit my large with Cardo…but on its side. I also LOVE how quick I can take the luggage off the K16GTL. Great video! Gracias
It's interesting to me that with all the advancements in touring motorcycle technology, I still haven't seen anything that has a much volume and ease-of-use as the storage on my 1984 Aspencade (and I'm including my '16 Wing as well). The 1200's, in my opinion, were the high point of Gold Wing storage. Those top-loading bags and big, rectangular top box were just SO GOOD.
You are not alone in your assessment.
I found that helmets fit best in the BMW top case when upside down. The bottom is more sloped than the top and generally placing the helmets upside down will allow two FF helmets to fit.
I have a BMW R1200RT. I added a top case. I is the same size on the K1600GTL. The side bags are advertised 33 liters each the GW is 30 each. The top case/truck is 49 liters versus 61 liters. Roughly 127 on the GW versus 115 on the BMW.
Looks like usable storage in the BMW is greater than the GW. It's just a matter of space utilization.
Very interesting side by side review. I ride a 2008 GL1800 and I’m not a big person @ 5’ 4”…it can be a challenge at times. Especially slow speed and maneuvering on my gravel driveway. I was interested in the weight of the BMW and the fact that it has a lowered seat option. I continue to struggle with holding it up at stops.
Hi Cruiseman, I picked up 2022 blue dct tour. Love the bike and color but they put some strange decal trim under the clear coat. I don't like it, I'd like it gone. So naturally I thought, what would Cruiseman do?? Any ideas about removing factory decals under clear coat?

Both bikes are made to do the job quite well, Both are high quality bikes, and are both priced good in comparison. The Japanese bikes are very accommodating and will give you years of riding pleasure.

The K1600 absolutely has more storage place than the 2018 and later Wings. And the storage shape is more appropriate being closer to a rectangle than the odd shaped cases on the Wing. The Wing is a classic case of form over function. Having said that, I like my K1200LT better than both of these as it has both a nice form as well as good function. I like the Wing, but I don’t like the smaller storage and the smaller gas tank as compared to my BMW. Honda has addressed the trunk and I am hoping they now address the panniers and the fuel capacity which is 1.5 gallons shy of the K1600.
You travel light. Need to add rain pants, rain gloves, warm jacket liner, tool roll, mini compressor, spare rok straps, blah blah blah and 2 or 3 more ball caps 😀

'21 Wing will hold two large Shoei Neotech's in the top box. At least mine does!
Is it just me or does the GL1800 have slightly more storage? Seems like I can stuff a ton of things in my side bags and trunk.
The Wing Does NOT have as much storage as the Beemer.
My good friend has a 2018 Beemer and he can fit more stuff in his.
I am not sure about 21 and newer Wings, but the only thing they changed on it was the top bag.

Quick question on LidLOX. Can you use a helmet without a D-ring with it? I have a Schuberth, which has the insert and click type.
LidLox says you can, but I have never tried it. You might want to email them.

it must be the shape or your helmet. 2 shoei neotechs fit. you can put 2 helmemts in the GTL top case

Would a 12" LP record fit in the side case? I buy & sell records and am interested in the Goldwing and was curious.

Interesting! I would have put money on the BMW for more storage capacity over your 2018 Goldwing! Glad I didn't! I guess though I'll upgrade to a 2021+ for the larger trunk. I've also heard you can buy saddlebag lids for the Goldwing that help increase storage space, but they are probably pricey. Have you seen and tried/tested them out Cruiseman?
The BMW does have a lot more storage. Cruiseman was using only about 60% of the space in the side cases. About 40% of the space is outside the elastic straps and he had little in that space. I ride an LT and the bag liners for it fit the 1600 quite well as I have used them on several GTL rentals in Europe. When I test rode the 2018 Wing, I was on a trip with my LT and my wife and we had all three of our bag liners packed full. They fit easily in my LT and would have fit also in the GTL. They would not fit in the side cases of the Wing. The lids barely got within 3” of closing. It wasn’t even close. The trunk bag fit into the Wing fine, but the side cases were woefully lacking, and still are on the 2023 unfortunately.
I easily get two full faced helmets in my 2021 Tour DCT top box
The BMW panniers I feel hold more than the GW as they are deeper, I moved all my gear off my K1600 gtl across to my new 2022 GW and straight off the bat I noticed the size difference in the panniers. But I do feel that the Top Box is bigger in the GW ( not sure if the TopBox litre age is bigger on the GW or just better shaped) maybe do a litre by litre comparison. But also I feel storage shape also has a lot to do with it.
No doubt the BMW panniers are deeper and can hold more. I am sure I could have stuffed much more into them on that trip if I needed to. The limiting factor on the trunk width is in how the dampers mount inside the trunk space as opposed to the Goldwing which mount on the outside of the trunk. Those mounts take up about 2.5" of width at the rear of the BMW top box.

You are comparing the Goldwing to a K1600gtl not a Grand America, and to my understanding the Grand America has a bigger top case.
You should have done this with a 2022 Goldwing.

Had. K1600 GTLE totally top heavy and if you add a passenger and enough luggage for a two week trip they are not good. I would never take one up the Stellvio. Not two up. Single rider maybe. I sold mine and bought my third GL 1800 2019 and would not go back
Yes, you feel the weight when stopped and in slow speed. My test ride was so stressful. So, dropped the idea of GTL.
@@zakharmidicheov1681 I know from bad experience. Two up we stopped in a junction on a country road to u turn. My wife turned to look behind and shifted the weight of the whole bike and I went down. Smashing her elbow. Six hours surgery and 6 months rehab and her elbow is now full of metal and screws.
