This represents a once in a generation perfect marriage between a performer and a lead character in musical theater. Its up there with Zero Mostel in Fiddler, Merman as Mama Rose, Joel Grey in Cabaret, Christine Ebersole as Edie Beale. They were born to originate their roles, their particular voices, skill sets and acting styles merge flawlessly into their roles. Platt created this character with such depth and integrity that its hard to imagine anyone else putting much of an imprint in our imaginations.

Yeah, he sung differently in Found/Tonight because he wasn't in character very good observation sorry im new lolol
I think he was vocally tired when doing this performance...he said in some interviews that the show was a long and tiring run and he arrived to a point of not talking at all during the day so to rest his vocal chords.
For fun, you should also review one of his live performances of an original song (I recommend Rain or Bad habit), just to see how he is when he is singing naturally. It always blows me away, since I saw him in DEH first!
The performance that made me want to get tickets to DEH. I had heard Ben was doing a show & my friend told me to go see it then I saw this & knew i had to get tickets. I was lucky that me and my family were spending Christmas/New Years in NYC so I got to see this in its first month or so into opening on Broadway.
He has literally the best voice
Your Ben platt fangirling is showing but it’s ok. He’s all our favorites too. He’s just amazing honestly. He does some funny songs (he’s got one where he sings as Mrs Lovett in little priest) and it’s hilarious and it’s such a flip from his character as Evan. He’s just that awesome . And I do agree that vocally here, he’s veering more towards enforcing his character since this is more about promoting the musical as opposed to his performance at the tony awards

It's just a master class in performing through song. All characterization even when the right character choice is to purposefully gasp for air or flub notes. Masterful!

I love this song, but how did you find this video that plays all the way through, theres a version of this video floating around that repeats "Tapping on the glass" over and over on a constant loop...the first 30 secs was hilarious, then it just got annoying. Lol 🤦♀️ Great review though! The creaters of this musical are in talks of making this into a musical Movie, and Ben Platt wants to play the lead, if it hits off within the next year or so...so lets all hope. 🤞🤞🤞❤

It's worth tracking down if you're interested in the show in general though - there is a killer version put out by the DEH official channel where it's performed by two Heidis and two Cynthias from the Broadway and tour companies.

love ben platt to pieces. i would say (imho) that he was having some vocal fatigue. he mightve been doing 3 or 4 of these things in one day. who knows. have you listened to his original music on youtube. he is so fabulous. i liken him to dolly parton as a storyteller through his music. :)
