Fun fact: Lin (who plays Hamilton) said that the reason he does a sort of gravelly voice on “as long as I’m alive Eliza swear to God you’ll never feel so” is because it makes Phillipa (who plays Eliza) laugh :)

I definitely believe her voice in “Helpless” is character choice. Eliza is young and naive here. When that changes, her voice is exactly what you want to hear when she sings “Burn” later on. I’m interested what your thoughts are in the comparison of the two.

    • @noellerose28

I agree. I think in Burn is where she would appreciate the vocal ability of Phillipa more - especially how she held back at the start, the build up, and how she opened up her voice with emotion in the latter part of the song.

Is it just me or did it feel like she didn't read any of the comments saying that Phillipa Soo chose to not sing with full open mouth drops because she wants Eliza to be seen as a bit naive and still quite young in this scene?

    • @weirdbunmi
      @weirdbunmi Před 3 lety +24

@@orchidsarepretty1422 Usually in singing, you want your jaw to be relaxed and open downwards, like when making the 'ooohh' sound. Renee shows good examples of this in Satisfied.
However, when Philippa sings Helpless, she tends to open her mouth lengthways, like one would when making an 'eeee' sound. This makes her voice more narrow. This is because she is using a stylistic choice to make her voice sound younger and more naive.
This information has been brought up in comments for previous reactions to Helpless and Satisfied, and was addressed in the newer reaction to Helpless and The Schuyler Sisters.
      Hope this helps!

you shouldve watched them in order back to back. theres a story there. Angelica (renee elise goldsberry) is attracted to alexander on an intellectual level but feels she cannot marry a poor man so she introduces him to her sister, Eliza (Phillipa Soo), who was smitten at first sight. "helpless" is essential to understand the context of "satisfied" and why its such a sad song because you get to watch the same moment twice from different perspectives. eliza's happiest moment in her life is angelica's saddest moment. the songs go hand in hand.

Helpless and Satisfied are the opposite. I think that is why she sings a little more high tone like you say, and Angelica sings more open. It is happening at the exact same time. But in two different perspectives (Eliza’s and Angelica’s). But yes Alexander and Angelica were a thing also.

I think the big difference in the other video is that she was singing on a zoom meeting and was controlling the projection (creating more tightness/ping-y-ness) because she was tentative/conscious of not blowing out people's ears since they all had earbuds in. It's very difficult to gauge your volume and sound in that medium and it caused her to sing in an unnatural way.

I think what you're missing is that this musical is a bridge of hip hop and Broadway. All the numbers are purposely created to not only pay homage but to showcase how hip hop in a stylistic way. In this song it's supposed to be the R&B singer Ashanti and rapper JaRule. So some of Eliza's choices are due to singing like Ashanti. If you ever heard JaRule rap you clearly pick up on that when Hamilton raps. I watched a lot of these Hamilton reviews you did and I think if you understood why and how the music was created it would help you better understand the stylistic choices that were made. It will also help you understand that the same character is channeling different hip hop artist throughout the play, which is why sometimes they sound so different from one song to the next. One example is in the song "Schuyler Sisters", they were embodying the R&B group Destiny's Child. But here Eliza isn't no longer a member of that group but embodying Ashanti.

The sisters sound was inspired by Destiny’s child and the way they harmonize together

You should do a watch-a-long of the entire musical on Disney. You could put it in Patreon.

The reason her voice was more strained and everything because she is wearing a corset so there is less stability to prepare for the notes and breathing.

Yes! There is some Beyoncé influence in there. The line where Eliza sits “two weeks later in the living room stressing, father stone faced while you’re asking for his blessing” is a nod to Beyoncé’s countdown.

I like how they're like " ya never know it could still happen" but it's a historical play/musical so it can't really happen since it didn't happen in real life when it comes to Angelica and Hamilton

THIS! I was like "but it's a real story they can't change it" maybe they just didn't know its about on a real story, actual history.

  • @jennyfromtheotherblock

Do Satisfied next, it will explain the Eliza, Alexander, Angelica dynamic. Fun fact: most this is historically accurate and mostly taken from Eliza's accounts from soldiers and congressmen and friends of Alexander's life.

I thought the strain was intentional… she seems to be emoting much more in this version and her vocals seem more emotional here, I hear the almost desperate tone in her voice
