I agree about Aaron's character. The hair...no. The vical fry...no. and then him being surprised that Cady is good at math.... YOU'RE IN AN AP CALCULUS CLASS, why was he even in an AP calculus class if he turned out to be bad at math? Cady pretending to be dumb and asking him questions and he's wrong about EVERYTHING 😭

@@silas3842I actually did think she was a pretty good fit for Cady. Mainly because I had seen her in Honor Society and really loved her performance. She had also gotten really good reviews for being the wise cracking teen in The Nice Guys. I had a lot of faith in her going in and she’s not horrible in the movie. She’s just not memorable. The writers really took her beginning wall flower personality and made it very literal. This Cady has 0 personality and even less of a story arc. Her transition from wallflower to mean girl happens overnight and completely in the background. They could’ve helped her in the vocals a little bit more to. Honestly I think they gave Angourie zero support in leading the film. Give her a meatier script (ahem Tina Fey, I’m looking at you girl) and a director who knows how to make her shine and we probably wouldn’t be having this specific conversation.

In the musical, (and arguably just in mean girls period) the whole point is that Cady can convincingly dethrone Regina. And in the musical sense, the Cady has to vocally be just as strong as the Regina. And songs like Roar, Stupid with love. Show that. Like “oh she’s fierce too but just doesn’t know it’ And you don’t get that from Angourie…vocally. She cannot hold a candle to Renee and it sticks out like a sore thumb. It’s unbalanced.
I'll say it again: Sabrina Carpenter would destroy it as Cady speaking vocally - and I'm sure her transition from innocent Cady to plastic Cady would be great too.
p.s.: I know she already played the role on Broadway and that's bc she was my first thought, but I never saw anything with her bc for some reason it's like the footage just didn't exist on the internet. 😕
Agreed. Gretchen was way too weak in this movie as well -- she's supposed to be a fierce contender for Queen Bee in her own right, but her self esteem is trash because Regina always tears her down. I'm a firm believer that the best casting for Cady, Gretchen, and Regina would be actors that could believably play any of these three roles.

I lowkey wish they could have gotten Sabrina Carpenter for Cady. She played it on Broadway and her voice might have delivered more. Plus didn’t they Sabrina and Renee share the broadway stage? that would have been a good call back to that!

"Angourie can't pull off both socially awkward Cady and mean girl Cady" is a take I've seen a lot and Sabrina Carpenter could pull off both versions of Cady
The numbers from Mean Girls the Musical require a LOT of vocal strength, and it's just such a mystery why they decided to cast Angourie as Cady!! Her voice simply doesn't fit the belting required for the main character role, and it makes you wonder what sort of directoral choices went into deciding that they'd prefer to change the songs rather than pick a different actress.
i also don’t know why they didn’t just use a different voice / singer / actor to sing the songs because angourie is not vocally strong enough

Guys ya'll tryna coming for me when I literally go to a performing art school, this performance from a music theory standpoint is really nothing wrong with it. Ya'll act like she was singing in a different key, like she was singing in a different octave and her voice was unsupported. Just because she decided to sing with a back resonance instead of a front resonance like the original is just the singers preference of handling the music.

My main issue was Cady's really abrupt transition from sweet, innocent Cady into mean girl Cady (which wasn't really convincing). Lindsay Lohan was able to play both so well and her transition to "plastic" was more subtle and gradual, but this actress really only fit the sweet/innocent side to me (even in her clothing, as you mentioned).

I liked that montage in the OG where Cady admits that she can't stop talking about Regina, and her hair and makeup gradually gets more girlier. It felt like that was a subtle shift that took months where as the new version just switches Cady up with no warning.
I wouldnt call it entirely an acting thing because they cut like. All the songs i can think of that are part of the transition for the movie
I think that's an issue with the stage musical as well and they just didn't fix it in this adaptation, if you look at Erica Henningson (the OG Cady on broadway) her portrayal it has the same problem
I thought this transition was better actually bc cady actually seemed like she was homeschooled and new to all this and awkward Lindsay’s version she was still so trendy and fashionable and cool at the beginning so i liked how they made her more real in this version and like she was barely even mean in this version just got w the wrong ppl but in the og she was way less forgivable and geniunely horrindously mean
When the primary antagonist is giving "bi-panic" while the main love interest is giving "uuuummmm" then I think it's safe to say the casting team and the writing team were on two different pages.
I can't lie when Aaron Samuels first turned around I was also like wait HE's supposed to be taking our breath away? Like later in the movie his "cuteness" grows on me because he's actually really sweet, but it didn't give the teen heartthrob feeling from the first head turn lol.
Maybe a bit unpopular but I did actually find his really attractive the first time, and he grew on me even more as the movie went on. In a lot of scenes he kinda had a confused stare that made him even cuter lmao

The way Cady killed any comedic and dramatic momentum every time she showed up on the screen really was criminal. She literally felt like an afterthought the whole movie even though she's a main character and that was such a cruel thing to do to that poor actress lol.

Regina, Janis, and Damien were definitely the highlights of the movie for me- they had it all: singing, acting, chemistry, and stage presence.
This was Auli'i's ROLE. She was fantastic! She and Damian were a very bright spot in this movie.
One thing this movie did really well is show that the story isn’t about Cady, it’s about Janice and Regina. Cady was always just the middle-man in their games
I think that's exactly why this movie felt unfocused.
Mean Girls is a fish out of water story first and foremost
tbh the og movie was centered around Cady bc Lindsay was the most popular actress at that time, but in this one Reneé is, so it makes completely sense that it was more focused on Regina.
Poor Angaurie, she said it was really hard to not only sing but then sing in an American accent and I think it probably did a disservice to her vocal ability in the movie
Yeah, since she had to try to sing in a different accent, it would totally cute a lot of the emotions or performance ability. I would dare anybody to try to sing a song that you're just learning, in an accent that not your own and see how it goes.

I don’t think she’s a horrible singer but when she’s in a cast of people that do sing, especially Reneé singing as a career, it’s hard to match that. Nothing about her, I just think they should have casted someone to match the performance of others
@@sarahjones2541 With certain accents and singers, that's not actually true. I mean even Ed Sherran I can hear english pronunciations for words. Angaurie was a decent singer, but if she didn't grow up really singing, her natural singing voice might have her natural accent.

For me, the thing I love most about musicals is how EXTRA everything is. It's not about having a pretty voice (even though they do), it's about conveying all the emotions with every line.
With 90% of the songs in this movie musical, it felt like they just wanted to show off how pretty their voicals were, and absolutely nothing else. They were afraid to get silly with the vocals or do anything other than sing the exact note.
Choices were definitely made in this movie...
EXACTLYYY! A lot of the time in musicals to portray extra emotions is to talk a certain line, like how Cady does in the musical "And being kenyan he ran fast" in the movie shes just like -_- following all the notes but not doing anything fun, also they barely gave her any slightly high notes which is so ridiculous. I will never forgive them for someone gets hurt, they removed all the best parts 😭😭
That and casting a guy who couldn't sing as Aaron were Choices. Also felt like the plastics and Janice could've been meaner.

I think that the biggest musical mistake made in this movie was that they didn’t allow the actors to express the emotions of the musical characters. It seems to me that they were trying to focus too much on the actors and pushing a “modern” take on this movie rather than the musical.

Renee has said on multiple occasions that she plays Regina like she’s in love with Cady and that makes a lot of sense.
YESSS thank you!!! I 100% agree on Aaron, he was not giving me heartthrob at all and that first scene was so cringe, like what were they thinking. I too hated how dumb they made Karen in this movie and the vacant bug-eyed stare was just an extra layer of awfulness. I completely agree that she doesn’t seem dumb she genuinely seemed like she’d had a traumatic head injury or was on some very heavy drugs.
i felt so mean while watching this because i was SO hard on angourie. i physically could not change my face from a mild look of disgust and confusion during stupid with love and hannah's reaction makes me feel so justified. she is trying JUST AS HARD as i was to be as nice as possible 💀

Something we should all keep in mind... there is nothing to blame Angourie Rice for. She cannot play the role, obviously, but that is 100% on whoever cast her. Somebody said "do you want to accept this money and opportunity?" I am an old man and I would have signed on to play Cady in a heartbeat if some lunatic handed me the contract. It is NOT HER RESPONSIBILITY to say "I'm not very good and would ruin your movie." It is her job to be confident and positive and believe in the project. Peter O'Toole destroyed three very expensive Hollywood musicals because he could not sing a note but idiots kept handing him the contracts. Not his fault. Great actor, not a singer -- but important people kept telling him he was exactly what they wanted in order to make these musicals suceed. And his job was to do his best, which he did.
(My Fair Lady was a huge hit with Rex Harrison talk-singing so people assumed any British actor could do musicals. Man of La Mancha is almost operatic... talk-singing The Impossible Dream is like Jack Webb's rendition of Try a Little Tenderness. Check the Webb track out. It will change your life... but not nessecarily for the better.)

My recommendation when people want to watch this movie is to just “not think about anything, shut down your mind and just enjoy renee” and it works wonders! They enjoy it a lot more
I actually enjoy the movie a lot i'm not saying it was perfect but It was a fun time and i think people often forget that's the whole point of watching a movie people are too busy looking for flaws to try to enjoy it

I big thing I noticed in the movie was no one ever finished their song. Most of the time it was quickly interrupted. In musicals you sing your song it the big ending note, then there is a beat where the person kinda takes their moment then the show starts up again. No one got to take a moment in the movie. It was always interrupted by something, most often a bus
It honestly feels like Hollywood these days think that musicals are uncool, bad or weird and if you’re making a musical you need to can’t advertise that it is a musical because then people might not want to see it, and make it self aware of the fact that it’s a musical and for the musical numbers to ‘make sense’ as it were. If you look in the background of certain music numbers you can see people playing instruments as if that’s supposed to explain the sudden music and people singing out of nowhere. Same with the type of jokes that poke fun at it being a musical at all, like when that one girl makes a reference to Revenge Party during the apology scene. You’re not funny or clever, it’s just cringe-worthy.
And to me, this is a major sign of insecurity. Like the people making this movie was so ashamed or embarrassed to be making a musical that they need to poke fun at their own movie if that somehow justifies it being a musical. As well as pop-ify the soundtrack and remove as much of the musical theater aspects of the movie and story so it will be more appealing to the audience you want to watch the movie. Same goes for the fashion btw, but not my point.
Just let it be a musical, and if you’re not comfortable or into making a musical movie, don’t make one!

This movie is a guilty pleasure of mine. One one hand, I can see its flaws. On the other, it had some HILARIOUS moments and Renee, Auli'i, Jaquel and Avantika carried the whole film and I adore them for it.
This is the life philosophy about the movie that keeps me going. It's disappointing at parts, amazing in others. Not the end of the world; just means I only have a handful of the soundtrack songs on my rotation instead of the whole thing. ❤ 🤷♂️
Taking movies like this too seriously is going to always be a let down. They're supposed to be fun and campy, not something to be ripped apart for every minor issue.

It's giving movie adaptation Les Mis and Westside Story. I don't understand why they seem to consistently have at least one or two main cast members just not have the chops required for a Broadway musical.

Revenge Party has the best moment with Cady deciding to do revenge on Regina…we didn’t get that emotion here and it really bothers me. It’s SUCH a good song from the musical and they did it dirty

Her flirty demeanor towards Cady, the updated R necklace that is half pearls and half a chain (said to be done to give a more androgynous vibe) and all of her wardrobe. Her carrying around the pride pin plush under the guise of “allyship” and her still pursuing Aaron and Shane gives me closeted girl experience comphet

I've seen Angourie Rice in a bunch of stuff. She's good but she always makes safe acting choices. Maybe because she is young and still learning. Her voice is ok but not right for the role. She definitely sounded better than what I've heard previously. She shouldn't be getting all the hate. A lot of it is directing too. And they could have given her more tools to be even more successful. Seemed more like stunt casting to me. They wanted a bigger name when there are so many people that couod have played Cady. Everyone else was great. Some of the writing was trying too hard and then fell flat. Wasn't as bad as I thought it would be but they could have done more.

I am a Mean Girls Musical freak. I’ve seen all the bootlegs with almost every cast. This Cady killed me. Besides not having the power or drama- she never once put a V on the end of “love.” She was “stupid with luw.”

Some of the things I love about Hannah's reactions is how she knows what she wants, so if she doesn't like something but she ends up liking a part of it later on she'll say she does, she admits to it and stays honest unlike most reactors where if they don't like one thing, they don't like everything
Same! She can find strengths in subpar performances but isn’t afraid to point out weaknesses too. Because a lot of this movie ISNT bad, it’s just bad casting for some roles and a fundamental misunderstanding of how and why the original musical works.

I totally agree with you, everything you said is what my opinions were whilst watching it! I don't mind the direct eye contact into the camera though, it gives the songs a music video quality, and I think that is more successful than just randomly breaking into song, like they did in the Dear Evan Hanson movie.
HUGE mean girls musical fan here -- I've seen it a bunch and I've watched both movies a bunch.
love angourie as cady, but maybe not vocally. she has a beautiful voice, but not the best fit for the role because most of her energy was going into the American accent. would love to see her in another musical role, where she can really shine as herself and maybe with less pressure.
bebe has a nice voice as well and i need her to be in another musical role so we can actually hear it!
reneé, avantika, auli'i, jaquel, and everyone else did a great job and were cast very well for their roles! (and yes, they made karen too dumb.. it worked sometimes but not always)
revenge party is strange, but its cool that they tried to make it a dream-like sequence (and they brought back cut lyrics!)

Please don't hate me, but I thought that while Renee sounded great, her diction was a real issue sometimes. In musical theatre the song carries the story and it can be struggle to follow it if you can't make out all the words. It's like Arianna Grande, she sounds incredible, but I worry about her diction for musical theatre style. I would be interested to know if anyone else thinks about the diction as much? Loved her voice though!

The one problem I have is that (in my opinion) this movie completely alienated fans of the broadway show. If you are giving mean girls a “new take” by being a musical LEAN INTO IT! don’t barely advertise it as a musical, throw in a water down stupid with love and put us on our way. I get making creative choices and trying to make your own path, but as someone who is in love with the original musical, I felt like they should have made it more MUSICAL-like. Idk maybe it’s just me. Awesome review 🩷
I watched this movie purely for Reneé Rapp and I was not disappointed by her, god that woman is stunning and great. Were there parts I cringed at? Yup. Am I ignoring those? Also yes. (And yeah the gay panic is real lmao and on Reneé's part definitely intentional)

Stupid With Love is honestly one of my favourite songs from the original musical. I was flabbergasted when I heard it in the new movie. They went against everything the song stands for. It’s supposed to be overwhelming and dramatic and over the top. Cady is meant to sound kind of breathy near the end, and they took it all away
this movie almost makes me wish i could erase the original mean girls musical from my memory so that i wouldn't have to be pissed off about all the parts they got wrong

I think I would enjoy any commentary by you on even the worst of movies... you are hilarious and the perfect blend of sweet and sassy. You are a delightful and lovely person. One question about Descendents 3... did I just miss it or did you intentionally skip over audrey's wicked transition song... that was my favorite song in this movie and I would love to hear your thoughts on it... "its extreme but we can all relate to it a little bit" THAT. this the entire appeal of mean girls to me and this adaptation hurts because it feels like whoever directed and arranged the music didn't understand what made mean girls work in the first place
