I'm a 72 yr old female petrolhead and in love with my 2009 NC. Nothing to touch it on the road. I have a permanent smile on my dial and look for any excuse to drive topless which, in sunny Cape Town, is nearly every day. Best choice I've ever made 🥰
I agree, for the price right now there really isn't anything that can touch it. Glad you enjoyed the video, don't forget to subscribe for more!
Impeccable good choice, luv!
This is the best coherent non bullshit review of this MX5 i have heard so far. Thank you, i just might buy one as an everyday car. 👍🏼
Wow, that’s so nice to hear! Thanks for watching!
I just did
@@nfscooterguy me too its ready friday im so excited
One of the best NC reviews I've seen, thank you 😊
Wow, thank you!
I bought an 06 MX5 last March, drove it all summer...I love it, mine is in copper red mica, black interior/top with the 17in 10 spoke aluminum rims...it's such a beautiful, cute, fun car..... I'm 52, have always owned a convertible, but this one is by far my favorite, it's just incredibly reliable, and the fun factor is outta this world....
Hi...Im thinking of getting one of these mk3's myself...have been looking on youtube for several weeks now..it will be a second car for me. Can I ask whether its comfortable enough? And how tall you are please? And is there much wind buffeting in the cabin? I dont actually mind a bit of buffeting though😀
Fantastic, I have just bought a 2007 MK3 NC 1.8ltr :) so much fun, you don't need big power to enjoy yourself.
@@user-ck6kq8zl2i I'm 5-8...not much wind in your hair, lol, it's designed quite well...the inside noise I don't find to be terrible...music is usually playing anyway, and it has a pretty decent 6 speaker sound system, I have the touring model, automatic/with paddle shifters for "manual" mode..and the small, contoured trunk spoiler, that adds just a bit more "sportier" look to the lines of the car
@@MrSunnyBhoy I love my mx5...just drove it home from work, and I feel completely happy and relaxed...it is, just pure, driving, fun!...
@@libra42ful I can totally relate now! :) What colour is yours? Mines silver
I love my 2006 NC , it's quick and nimble and makes commuting fun. I take trips to see my son and his wife 450 miles away and enjoy every mile.

I actually look for excuses to drive mine.
I have an NC....it’s a lot of very good things but the last thing it is....is quick!

I got my midlife crisis over and done with early and bought this car last week aged 25. So far, no regrets. So much fun to drive!
I think that’s called a quarter-life crisis
Been looking at picking one of these up recently, really nice and helpful review 👏👍
Hi Dan, thanks for your kind comments. Hopefully you find the one you’re looking for!
Cracking presentation and fun really love the mx5 and having one for my retirement next year. Cheers

Beginner's sports car? Hey, if you can find one in good condition that's been properly maintained, get it! If you're on a budget and that's the only sports car you have for the rest of your life.... You're better off than most folks.
I mean I'd be very happy in an MX-5, but I would be happier in a Porsche GT3
Just came across your review - very interesting! Been considering an MX5 for a while - NA's are now very expensive for a half decent one, like the NB but finding a solid one that hasn't rusted away and is half full of filler seems almost impossible! Now thinking about an NC and it seems they are as much fun although in a slightly larger, more modern package - still hearing some concerns on rust issues!
Thanks for watching!
Very good. I'm thoroughly entertained, and informed!

Thanks for a really good review, to the point and lots of information. I must say I really like the design, but I’m an architect lol. Seriously I believe this design will hold for many years to come - this is a future classic. The best sport car is the one you actually use and this one is practical, fun, reliable ... and good looking.
The NB is the classic
@@EdA-bz3bu nah the na is the classic
The NA & NB fanboys dropped their comments. I'll rely on an architect's sense who says this NC is a future classic though 😊.
Thanks for sharing!
The only MX-5 that anyone over 4 foot tall can fit in. I just got mine a few days ago, and I absolutely love it, even stock and on winter tires! What a riot to drive.
Awesome choice 👍.
2nd favorite motor next to 550 Spyder.
I certainly had a hoot
I am 6'-2", although very proportional legs/upper body, and just fit into a ND. It is tight, but it works.
Really nice video mate! I'm looking at getting one of these and this touched on several points I was considering/worried about, such as it being my first RWD and being worried about it slipping out on me. Thank you very much, really detailed and helpful review!
Glad I could help! Thanks for watching!
Excellent review! The NC is terrific in every way as a fun and affordable roadster. There aren’t any better 2 seat convertibles like this except for the Porsche Boxster and BMW Z4. Those are luxury roadsters and cost twice or three times as much depending on the trim level. A Used MX-5 is a fantastic buy as long as you get a clean one in good condition!
Thanks for watching Joel!
@@BuckleUpShow - You’re welcome...keep it up!
I mean the S2000 would like a word but the NC is great
@@PatrickTCAPIreland - S2k is a terrific high revving car but sadly hard to find in good shape! I had a 2001 S2000 and finally after several years I traded for a 2012 Porsche Boxster. They both were lots of fun. Now I’m daily driving a 2008 Miata, also a blast. You just can’t beat the value and fun of the NC with the power retractable hard top. Mine is automatic which is so easy to drive while the nimble handling and overall balance is really nice. Actually the lightness makes it even better than a Boxster which feels much heavier in corners.
Really good review, I have an NC and an NB ( couldn't bear to sell the NB when I "upgraded"). If you have an NC the must do mod in my opinion is fitting lowering springs, 30mm at least. Cost about 150 quid and totally transforms the handling without turning it into a skateboard. Great cars, so much fun.
I just bought mine so thanks for that info, will look into :)

Haha thanks for watching!
I liked this! One of the few reviews to actually look at the interior properly. You are lucky to have your long suffering camera woman 🤩

Harry, just bought my 2nd MX5 - an NC - and had an NB ten years ago, so I'm on my second mid-life crisis. Great, personable presentational style - and I recognised some of those N. Yorkshire locations. Not too sure about your rust-related comments - certainly not taking mine out after gritting.
I think it's water sitting in the sills due to blocked drain holes rather than salt from the road that is more likely to cause problems, it still susceptible but not as badly as its predecessors (especially the NB)
Great comment from 2:30. I've got an 06 with the 17 inch rims that were standard in Oz. I've since gone with 6kg/4.5kg coilovers and grabbed a second set of rims with ye olde Federal track tyres... highly recommended. I would like a little more side-wall for a smoother ride. In Oz there are issues with fitting 16s despite them being standard fitment elsewhere. A previous car I drove for some years was an 07 Fiesta with 15s and good rubber. Prior to my NC that car was easily the best driving car I've owned. In hindsight I should have sprung for the Mazda 2 version, given the litany of issues, but it weighed very similar to the NC and drove well on 15s...
Thanks for watching
Yes, yes wheel tyre ratio agreement from over here!
Preach it Al!
a top video i had a 2009 nc mx5 really liked it but it was rusting an rotting away underneath they have zero rust protection so part-ex for a 2002 mr2 roadster really a good drive and zero rust on it there rare and still not seen another on the road! there so so underrated !!!
Thanks for watching David, I had always been led to believe the NC had at least improved on the NA & NB in the rust department, especially on the chassis legs, but I know sills are still an issue. Swapping to an MR2 sounds like a good trade though, I wish I could get my hands on one but as you say you don't see many out on the road
Hood gap is bigger as the hood is made of light gauge aluminum and it moves more. (It wasn't necessary to make it that large, but I think it was a new experience for Mazda.) Front fascia and bumper gap is tight as they were trying to make it look as much like one piece as they could.

You can put a 000 size guitar in the boot, case and all, no problem. I’ve got this car and love ❤️ it.
I think I'd struggle with my bass, it's amp and the monitors that I have to take to most of my gigs
@@BuckleUpShow Yes, for sure. I only use my MX5 for going to local lessons with one guitar. It's a fun car to drive, better than a motorcycle because you can carry groceries and also not have to suit up with leathers and a helmet every time you get in the car. I used to go teaching on a Harley Road King but it got tiresome after a few years. No protection from the weather at all. Anyway, that's part of my story.
I had a nb 140 hp for 2 years (only!) and now I have the same that you show us here. A 2 l from 2006.
Maybe it's a little bit too" big"
But, yes, it has more comfort and is still delivering lots of fun.!
The best sport car is the one you actually use. 👍 a little bit of comfort doesn’t hurt
It's bigger than an NB but still smaller than nearly everything else on the road
To be honest, I always liked the design of the NC because it reminded me of a baby Jaguar XK. I already own a stock NB 1.6 that I share with my family (because I'm nice) and I'm looking for something just for me that works on the Nordschleife as well as on the way to work or on nice country road.
I am looking for something modern without all the fancy gadgets, sporty but still comfortable.
Sounds like the NC fits your bill
The designer on this gen MX-5 was also a Jaguar designer.
the NC does rust quite a lot, worryingly it tends to rust from the inside out especially on the sills so you won't realise until its too late
That’s the MX-5 guarantee
Hi, lovely review, do you think that as a 6 foot 4 guy will I fit inside?
I think it would be a struggle but mostly just for head room, so depending on the climate where you are you could always just keep the roof down
I'm from Spain so I'm guessing it's roof down for most of the year! Thx for the extremely quick reply 😁
I'm 6 feet 2 and I fit just fine. It depends on the torso/legs ratio really. If you have long legs and not so tall torso, you'll fit.
Well done young man.
Thanks for watching Tim!
Hi, which is better to enjoy, smart roadster or mx5 NC? Thanks in advice
The Mx5 NC
Nice review mate, not sure I agree with you on the rust though! haha. Don't give that rear sill a poke with a screwdriver.
Hey man, thanks so much for the kind words! We all watch your channel so this means a lot! Don’t worry, we’ll be sure to go nowhere near the rear sills 😂
looking at buying an NC soon. Found a good example in my area. my only question is, do all 2.0L's come with an LSD, because this would sell it for me.
Had a 3.0 BMW before with an open diff and always longed for an LSD
No, you can phone Mazda with a VIN and they will tell you if it was optioned with one. The best indicator is LSD cars have yellow shock absorbers, but these can have been upgraded/replaced. Also LSDs are most common on the six speed gearbox cars.
I thought the reason it was bigger is that it had to share its suspension design (and therefore track width) with the RX8 to cut development costs.

Hi mate, one year later, and have you had any maintenance issues pop up? I'm about to pull the trigger on a well looked after 06 with 96k kms and just hoping it'll be a good reliable daily (as opposed to my 98 nb I daily drove which left me stranded a few times)

@@BuckleUpShow no worries mate cheers for a great vid!
As far as I'm aware they're very mechanically reliable, the main thing is rust from road salt or blocked drain plugs
Ive just done about 17000 miles in one of these. Verdict: best car ever pound for pound simple as that.
Well done, great review mate.
What model year do you have?
@ 2006

I thought they where wheels off the 1800 nc as the 20L has 17” wheels and the 1.8L has 16”. Could be wrong. Also that engine looks like the 1800 version..
Its definitely a 2 litre model, you check the reg on the DVLA website and it says 1999cc. It's possible at some point the wheels got swapped maybe or they could have a no cost option at the dealer?
Thank you for watching
Great video, but i wish you recorded the sound of the car running, love the engine sound at hi rev.
It's hard to mount a microphone to an exhaust without it melting unfortunately
I didn't mean in the exhaust pipe, every mazda video I ever seen you can hear the beautiful engine sound, I'm sure they didn't have the mike in the exhaust pipe, great come back answer I give you that😊
It's not just snark, the roads we film on tend to be windy so audio from a static camera isn't any good and if you mount a mic anywhere else outside the car it tends to also just be a mess of wind noise
what do you reckon about mx5 vs lotus elise?
What's the basis of the comparison? Track ability? Fuel Economy? Practicality?
@@BuckleUpShow economy im not super concerned about, almost anything will be a step up from what im used to. my last 3 cars have been somewhat tuned subaru wrx sti @ 400whp so absolute gas guzzlers. practicality im a little worried, as well as general daily drivability as thats majority of my use. drive to and from work (40km return trip daily), plus weekend hike missions, that sorta thing. generally i carry some camera gear for landscape photography and looks like the boot space is enough in both, but it seems on longer trips where there is a passengar involved, there is a lot more room in mx5 for additional gear? im torn haha, mx5 nd2 seems great and all , a lot more practical, but the elise seems to have something special and very 'race car' about it. hard to find local ones to test drive unfortunately so trying to gather as much as i can from the vids
What a handsome and well informed presenter

If you can find decent priced insurance then definitely
FYI, Japan does salt its roads. I live in Northern Japan and buy used cars from locations where they don’t need to use salt. I only drive a beater during the winter.
That'll teach me to believe what JDM importer car dealers say, do they salt all the roads or generally just the north island?
@@BuckleUpShow Not only Hokkaido, the North island, but many parts of Honshu, the main island. You would have no way of knowing for sure without inspecting the car. I imagine there are some dealers who are transparent about this, but not all. I got burned buying misrepresented cars at auction twice and now will not but a car without inspecting it myself.

Hi. What about rust in MX5 mark 3 ?
It does rust, but not as much as NA or NB, keeping drainage clear prevents a lot of problems
@@BuckleUpShow Thanks. What engine is best for mk 3 ? Think to buy
My personal preference would be a 2.0 with the six speed and an LSD, the 5 speed is a more robust gearbox but I prefer having more speeds
@@BuckleUpShow true. Thanks.
Did you feel comfortable in the car? I'm a bigger guy and am worried about space.
Harry here (the fella in the video) I felt absolutely fine in it and I'm a hefty lad, I think the first restriction you would feel would be having enough room for your knees as shoulder and waist room felt fine, and I guess that knee space would only be important on a longer cruise where your going to sit with your foot off the clutch for a long time. Obviously the best thing to do is get a bit of seat time if at all possible but I felt comfortable 🙂
Out of Na, Nb, Nc and Nd, the NC has the most overall room for driver and passenger. I’ve had an 2008 NC for 5 years and had 6 footers in the passenger side. They were snug but not cramped to being uncomfortable :-)
I don't know if every one has that but in mine the passenger seat is quite a bit lower than the drivers seat. Nevertheless I (6ft 1) still fit with no problem.
@@tpm2056 so your knees and legs are fine? I am like 1,85m, so that's about that size

Nice job, Harry.
It's a roadster. Many people who dislike the MX-5 dislike it because it is a roadster. Roadsters aren't for everyone (quite small, limited storage and seating, louder compartment, aren't the safest in a crash, etc.).
I enjoy them, though. Roadsters are the sane man's motorcycle.

Both engine die sooner or later with low km. Rust is crazy in those. Brake calipers go stiff all the time. Mx NC is not that good. The boot rust as first. There is no aluminum.
Ford duratec engines are generally reliable to high mileages, as well as being well supported and highly modable. The Rust is far from crazy, the earliest versions are nearly 20 years old, of course there are going to be issues but they don't go from the inside out like NBs. Sticking calipers on any car are most likely due to poor maintenance. The boot floor only rusts if the drain plugs get blocked, which while its a flaw it's not hard to prevent. The boot lid and bonnet are aluminium.
1.6, 1.8 or 2.0 very different cars
It's a 2.0 as mentioned in the video 🙂
There’s no 1.6 on the Nc
For anyone worried about shutlines......buy a dark car
Some cars still show
Dangerously misleading on the rust issue.
Not really, yes NCs rust like a car from the mid 2000s on the sills and round the wheel arches but you would be looking for that on any 15 year old car you were purchasing, NA and NBs rust if you look at the the wrong way and can go from the inside of the chassis rails. An NC that's drainage holes and underbody has been kept in decent nick will be a fine used purchase
@@BuckleUpShow You'd need to add the licence lights, side markers and chassis rails to this to even be close to accurate. This thinking is only based on them being newer, nothing more. It's widely accepted in the community and amongst those that own them that they are the same.
I stopped watching after the cheap TERF shot, why???
For exactly this reason xoxo
It's a very basic beginners review based on one of three variants + the RCs of the car, full of holes and imperfections though.
The panel gapping issue mentioned has not been seen on any of my three NCs which include a model (NC1) as presented + 2 x NC2s, if this is seen as a common topic then I remain surprised as I have done panel gapping with plastic wedge gauges and have found all to be within acceptable and certainly visible limits.
Might be good to mention that the four pot is of Mazda design but due to the partnership with Ford at the time, the MZR unit was in fact labelled by Ford as the Duratec engine, a sturdy and reliable unit even when highly tuned. Worth mentioning that it is a front- mid engined car i.e. engine is sitting completely behind the front axle.
Potholes of England? Really, your on You Tube mate describing a UK spec MX5- geography and terminology.
Were you aware that every Mazda imported of this period came in via Scotland? So very little Engiiish about them in that respect, UK, UK, Uk. Four countries, One Nation. Interestingly too, stats show a very high proportion remain in Scotland in regard to purchases, guess the roads, scenery and misunderstood climate are an attraction.
At the moment we are the UK, please aquiesse to this current state of the Union. Also accept that suspension can and was dialled to accept the larger than the 16" rims on the car displayed to the 17" rims on the Sport version which also carried the almost indestructible 6 speed 'box.
Boot space, we have done a four week 5 k Euro trip in one of these and never worn the same clothes twice in one day , it's a bloody practical day to day driver for two if you simply plan and open your mind.
Top tip, you don't keep the manual in the glove box...
Footwell is tight compared to many a FWD but as a six footer wearing size ten (UK) -Oh, see what I did there? Ive never had an issue with the offset, driven a real Mini, crazy offset position.
Mid Life crisis, most of the MX5 scene have possibly ignored the MLC and actually recognised the drivers car these are, my own default setting since any DSC was introduced is firmly off, I detest nannying and can cope with standard to high powered NC in normal to extreme conditions. Never underestimate an older driver in an MX5, many choose it for a purpose. The "computers" are frankly shit and I run a tuned, knocking on 300bhp at 60+ year old, with a very highly tuned suspension & chassis.
Final note, the NAs can and do rot badly, those in the know accept, repair professionally then protect. Some NBs rot for shits & giggles as can the NC. Owners in the know will at an early age rust protect and monitor their NCs, my 10 year old NC just went through it's MOT test and due to foresight was described as almost new underneath, I beg to differ, it's OK but not tidy.
Mazda's rot with passion so as always caveat emptor please.
Poor review here from some random bugger running MX5s for the best part of 20 years and making a point of researching.
This comment definitely can't come from ... son of Plato 😆.
@@zsb707 well, you may think it lousy for no specified reason but for me, it's down to experienced ownership of three NCs over 15 years. Current NC worked on by myself, extensively modded, circa 300 bhp, suspension mods, braced, brake mods and yet still a daily driver.
Your experience is...
@@sonofplato I have edited my comment after reading your input again. I was under the impression that you were criticizing the review. It's actually an input from somebody in the know. Your reply is gentleman-like and thus deserved a like from me. I've had an NC1 (galaxy grey) for nine years now. I use it as a third car along with my saloon and coupé. It's been fairly reliable. Mea maxima culpa and Godspeed!
@@zsb707 Fair play. Yes, had them for a long time now and only in recent yeats had others do some of the heavy jobs I can no longer managed. Supercharger self installed, other mods very carefully chosen to make for a very different drive to the average NC but still a daily driver that enjoys some good track time 👍

I'm sure it's a great car, but I'll never learn to like that stupid face. For me, good looks are one of the main reasons to buying a sporty car. ND2 is worth the extra $ just because of the much needed extra power, lighter weight, and far better looks. Being new doesn't hurt either, and that isn't usually the case. Mazda MX5 and Corvette are the only new vehicles I'd consider, they've ruined everything else!

Another reviewer who neglects to tell us how how tall he is.
180 cm or 5'11" whichever takes your fancy
Also, how is "the correct side" for the wheel the right? ....I't's like an American arguing for pounds and miles.
Your dominant hand (for the majority of people) remains on the wheel when you are changing gear
@@BuckleUpShow That's the case in UK, Japan ... in Germany for example most people change gears with their dominant hand.
Ignore the MX5 anoraks who look down their noses at the NC. I've had an 02 NB, which had been tweaked with coilovers, hotdog exhaust etc. And my 07 NC is better in just about every metric. It handles just as well, it has more room, it looks better (ok, that one is subjective), it doesn't rattle every time I go over a bump, it's faster and more torquey, and it's safer. I've driven a 2016 ND GT, which was very nice, but not worth paying more than double what I paid for my NC. Yes, non-MX5 owners will bleat about the low power, but I have a stage 5 tuned Saab 9-5 Aero, which chews up Golf Rs and Focus RS's and spits them out. And I'm telling you straight, my NC is more fun to drive.
Whenever I find myself idling browsing MX-5s on autotrader (a lot) I always look at 2.0 NCs, it's just such a well balanced all rounder and great value for money
@@BuckleUpShowwhat about the 1.8? There 2 going at decent prices near me.
