Been waiting for this one! 2016 is easily my favorite year out of the ones I've watched. I don't think it's the most consistent year in terms of the quality of the entries themselves (that would probably be 2014), but the overall production is just so good and there are so many great entries near the top of my list. I have everything from my 22nd place upwards as 7.0/10 or higher, which is VERY good. Also, the fact that Sweden is hosting ESC 2024 is very exciting to me because we're more or less guaranteed a well-produced Eurovision from them.

This video got blocked by the EBU and I had to wait 48 hours for the Content ID claim to process before I was allowed to make it public, so I hope you guys like it :V
Some unpopular opinions here for sure but it's far from my most disagreeable yearly ranking (that'd probably be 2012).

I'm just gonna pop in to say how great it is to see someone not absolutely smash Azerbaijan for their vocals. I truly never got that criticism in the slightest.
Also, it's always a bit of a whiplash moment when I see people like Denmark this year. Before the dark dark 20s I saw that as by far our lowest point since I started watching. I guess that honour goes to 2022 now, even if 2023 had a worse result.
    Also also, great winner!

This really was a great year. Great winner too; I wouldn't pick it as my favourite but I can totally see why it won.
All in all, my pick as favourite would be Bulgaria. Great catchy pop song in which you could hear its country of origin, fantastic fun and charismatic performance. It just makes me totally happy.
Georgia was a truly exciting entry! On the other hand, I never cared for Poland. And I'm among those few Eurofans who have never thought much of Iceland.
    My top 10:
    1 pt Italy
    2 pts Sweden
    3 pts Serbia
    4 pts Belgium
    5 pts France
    6 pts Ukraine
    7 pts Australia

You said there were only three genuinely bad entries...and then didn't include Moldova?
It definitely deserves to be in that category.
With Azerbaijan, at the time, we all heard the rehearsals without those backing vocals turned all the way up to drown poor Samra out. So yeah, this isn't *great* to listen to, but when fans refer to it being horrendous, it's mostly from what we heard previously.
Your top three are all really good but I feel like this is one of the years where we're most in disagreement. You've got two of my most disliked ESC entries really high up and you've underrated a lot of stuff that I think is great. XD
2016 is one of the best years, if not THE best year I've watched.

    • @JH3Eurovision
      @JH3Eurovision  Před 10 měsíci

I don't mind Moldova. I just think it's "meh" more than outright bad.
Idk if you saw my ratings on your spreadsheet but I gave it and the songs around it (39th-37th I believe) a 4.0/10. Basically "ehhhh" territory, at least on my scale.
I'll have to get back to you about the Azerbaijan rehearsals because now I'm curious lol.
      UPDATE: That first rehearsal. Oof

Hello and welcome to my 2016 thoughts!
0:24 Man I wish I could sing away my overdue school assignments and the impending doom waiting for me
0:33 I feel like it wouldn’t be as bad if it was in a higher key, because it’s clearly too low for him.
0:54 A perfect place to talk about my opinion on Germany: they’re not absolutely awful at Eurovision, but they’re not good enough for me to actually care about any of their poor results (this year included)
1:15 Okay, would I get a brutal sentence from the court of public opinion if I said this entry is actually pretty good until it changes time signature? (or is that why everyone apparently hates it?)
1:57 This is a sensory overload in the most uncomplimentary way possible. Also what is up with those faces? Something out of a bad creepypasta
2:20 How unpopular of an opinion would it be if I said this was one of the better songs of 2016? And also if this isn’t strong by Bosnian standards I am very excited to see the other Bosnian entries
2:51 What’s “production” by your definition?
3:03 Fun story: the day I watched semi 1 I was upset over my vocal range and how I thought it was too low, and him being a bass singer was literally the thing that made me snap out of it. He sings great!
3:15 Thank you thank you goddamn it thank you to North Macedonia for the only non-English song in semi 2
3:36 I heard it at times. I think you could be hearing the backing vocalists because they seem louder than her at times.
4:18 “so you’re just gonna…refuse to end?” -me watching the semi
5:01 Thank you thank you goddammit thank you to Austria for the only non-English song in the grand final
5:24 Completely disagree: the tempo changes don’t work at all and make it feel like a clumsy mashup, and “I’ll be your icebreaker when you’re stuck in frozen water” sounds like they were desperately trying to come up with something.
6:07 I love the way every country tries to sneak their flag in somehow
6:20 My favorite part of Czechia’s songs as a whole are their staging colors. I haven’t seen the 2015 and 2017 entries in full but from all I’ve seen every single one of their stagings is eye candy. This is probably the best of all of them.
6:42 And here’s my favorite of all of the songs (though 1944 is the overall best). The way she sings Italian makes it sound different in the best possible way, and I love the garden theme they went with too.
7:13 What on earth does “what color is your life” mean?? That’s the one thing keeping me from liking this
7:25 Tied with Albania 2010 for my favorite instrumental in any ESC song ever
7:35 The entire jury voting I was just begging for someone to give Bulgaria 12 points lol, glad they got a massive televote though!
Overall, I’m unfortunately one of those people that doesn’t enjoy 2016 much. Not many songs that stand out to me, and it’s also depressingly English-heavy. On the other hand though, this hosting is making me even more hyped for next year

    • @JH3Eurovision
      @JH3Eurovision  Před 6 měsíci

      - Your take on Germany is about right, I'd say. Pretty much all of their entries are around that level for me (with a handful of exceptions).
      - I don't really get why everyone hates Greece's entry tbh. I guess because it's noticeably worse than most of their other recent ones?
      - Bosnia & Herzegovina were an absolute juggernaut in older years. The first Eurovision year I went back and watched in full was 2006, and to me they were probably the strongest Eurovision country from then until 2012. They also had some fantastic entries in the 90s. Their 2016 entry isn't BAD but it really pales in comparison to the ones they sent earlier on.
      - "Production" in that context means the audio production (AKA how the instrumental is put together).
      - If done well, deep male voices are some of my favorites. Definitely don't feel bad about that.
      - Czechia's not a country I generally think of as having the strongest stagings, but yeah I can kinda see it. 2017's staging is pretty bad, though.
Fair enough that you don't like 2016. You're not the only one, either; this year is a lot more divisive than I initially realized.

i also reranked this year recently, and to me its the epitome of mid and I don't really care for it. but still, some standouts.
    comments as usual lol
-have you seen finland's stand in rehearsal? it's so much better.
-i like moldova more than i care to admit. catchy little bop, and i thought the staging was quite dynamic and had some good energy.
-agree on greece, i give it points over some greek entries (cough this is love) for trying a lot of stuff. unfortunately, none of it really worked.
-nina's dress is the best part of lighthouse and i will take no criticism
-kinda same with armenia, i think i have it as a pass in my rankings but i also find it quite forgettable. i think it's to do with the fact that it doesn't really have a climax for me.
-to me france was quite bad, i don't really know how it ended up as a fan favourite. to me it just sounds like radio filler.
-malta is an interesting case for me, it's everything that i claim to hate (manufactured, soulless swedish pop) but i dont' care because it has a banging breakbeat.
-despite how grating i found 2017, i actually like zoe a lot. i remember watching the semis and not getting why the crowd was so crazy about it, but it clicking when i watched the final.
-i am forever sore about icebreaker, one of my favourite NQs. although the vocals were kinda rough (i think she was sick), i still think it wasn't bad enough to tank it.
-i hate the UK this year as a brit because of just how much it reeks of bland british pop music that you'd see on some shit BBC show or something. non-brits might find it less offensive.
-i am one of the few eurofans who doesn't care for hear them calling. I think it's quite clunky and a bit too mechanical, and it just doesn't come together for me overall. surprising but not inexplicable NQ for me.
-1944 is my favourite winner and my 2nd favourite entry of all time. perfect.
-simply agree on both bulgaria and georgia (theyre my 2 and 3)

    • @JH3Eurovision
      @JH3Eurovision  Před 10 měsíci +1

      - I looked at Finland's rehearsal and Oof. Getting outperformed that hard by a stand-in is embarrassing. The song itself is still bad though.
      - I don't mind Moldova's entry either and I'd have it higher in a weaker year.
      - Agreed about France. Even within this year alone there are much better pop songs, but I've already been yelled at for putting France low. I seriously don't get it.
      - Pretty much the same thoughts about Malta. That said, have you ever seen Romania's 2003 entry? I'm personally not THAT big a fan but I feel like you'd be into it lol. That's about as close to breakbeat in Eurovision as you'll get.
      - I don't think Icebreaker is one of my *favorite* NQs but I still think it would've been Top 10 in 2017 (and probably also 2018).
      - Fair enough about the UK entry. I don't think people realize how different the US and UK music industries are.
      - I'm very much a "whole package" person when it comes to Eurovision so I stand by that Iceland should have qualified (although I do agree that the song itself is very lackluster).
      - Interesting about 1944. So what's your favorite winner and your favorite entry of all time then?

Ahh, the year with most misheard lyrics ever for me. Well, when it comes to the quality of songs and performances I like almost everything more ot less. My favourites song from here: Ukraine, Norway, Italy, Poland (absolutely not biased), France, Iceland and Georgia. Special category mixed feelings awards go to: Australia - I don't remember anything except the powerful chorus 5 minutes after listening, Russia - too much of everything, Sweden - it was overplayed that summer, not bad song itself but so overplayed in my part of Europe I was sick of hearling it.

I always feel bad when people say that If I Were Sorry was overplayed because I think the studio version is quite bad. Frans sounds much better live without all the vocal effects

Personally, 2016's a BIT overrated - I mean don't get me wrong it's still great and has loads of fantastic songs and has something for everyone I feel - but it's not outstanding imo. Some comments on some songs:
    - Jaime-Lee deserved a much better song I agree, she's a great vocalist
    - I find a lot of Armenia's entries overrated personally, this included. It's fine, still a good song, but it's missing a kick of sorts and feels a bit clunky at times
    - MUCH prefer 7th wonder to walk on water, which isn't a great look on walk on water tbh. boring, all i can say really
    - OK hear me out, I've got Estonia 6th in my rankings.... the song's too good, so much so that I can easily look past the whole Juri being creepy thing. Maybe he overdoes it slightly (ok, a lot), but the overall vibe and look match the song perfectly, and it's just so catchy.
    - yeah I think Samra sounds fine, dunno what everyone's on about.
    - I love Imagine Dragons, so obvs I'm gonna love Hungary
    - I had Australia on my 100 song long Eurovision spotify playlist for a while (it was and still is my winner btw), and icl every time I heard it it was kinda boring at times. but the live performance elevates it to a whole new level and completely transforms the song to make it my winner.
    - I hate Douwe Bob and how he comes across (he betted on himself to win i think?), but the song itself is solid, nothing more nothing less
    - I agree that Scream is better than YATOO, but I love both to bits (this is 2nd and Scream 3rd on my lists). I think when you have a staging as advanced as this then it elevates any song no matter whether it fits or not. I just find it funny that they broke the bank and then some to try and win, but completely forgot that there was also a jury that existed and which ultimately stopped it from even getting 2nd place
    - I shouldn't like Loin D'Ici, I really shouldn't, the staging's WAY too princessy for my liking, but she's so bloody adorable and the song's so catchy that I have to overlook the princessy feel.
    - Sweden... I like this a lot. Complete contrast to the previous year where staging while they outsmarted everyone ever, and then here where there's nothing but a few words on a screen. And I like lax songs like this, it's calm and laid back. Top 5? probably not, but still like it
    - Even when they don't get it right I love Norway. It's my 4th place, too high maybe, but I don't care. Euphoria rip-off at times? yeah probably, but I think 4 years on is enough time to make it seem less of a rip-off. The beat change from verse to chorus puts a lot of people off, but for me when everything's quality like it is, I can look past it. Norway have been in my top 10 every year since 2013 without fail (apart from rybak), and this is up there. fight me.
    - you like our "flop era" entries? so you like 20 years worth of music from us? this, well it's ok. but just ok, nothing more. i mean it's a MASSIVE improvement on the monstrosity the year before, and it's professional, the two look like decent lads and the song's got a decent meaning as well. but there's nothing much more to say apart from that, just average all in all. at least we didn't embarrass ourselves, unlike the year before
    - say yay doesn't feel spanish??? it's a disco song, of course it feels spanish! i get what you mean though, it feels more mainstream than usual, but i love it all the same and i'm stunned it didn't do WAY better than it did
    - thank christ czechia qualified with this, otherwise i don't think they would have ever qualified and thus bring us the quality they've brought us since 2018. decent ballad, but screwed by getting 2nd spot
    - hear them calling and tick-tock are the two songs that i don't think anyone will ever figure out how they didn't qualify.
    - 1944 is my 10th and i feel SO bad for putting it there. even though i prefer australia and russia ukraine deserved the win WAY more than the other two, if that makes sense?
    - poli genova legit just walked in and began a golden generation for bulgaria (they were in my top 3 4 years in a row beginning with this). a song should be illegal to be this fun, and yet it is somehow
    - i totally get why our jury gave this 12 - it sounds classic british indie-rock. the last time they qualified as well...

Lots to respond to here oh boy:
      - I've started to appreciate Armenia's entries more recently but I agree that many of their older ones are overrated.
      - Walk on Water is MUCH better than 7th Wonder song-wise, but 7th Wonder is elevated by the really likable like performance and honestly wouldn't have been too bad of a winner (at least compared to everything else in 2002).
      - I don't feel much for Australia's live performance either tbh, at least not staging-wise. It's a bit boring and the digital screen thing is so out of place and an obvious attempt to capitalize on the kind of staging brought by Heroes.
      - Yeah, Douwe doesn't seem like the most likable guy in the world. I only just recently learned about his beef with Hovi Star. Hilarious.
      - Agree that Russia's staging elevates the song (because the song by itself is nowhere near 3rd place worthy), but there were several other entries that I thought did the same thing but better, particularly Belarus, Iceland, and Georgia; Iceland especially stands out to me because of how well the staging fits the themes of the song and the message behind it. Russia's just looks cool and that's it.
      - Do people actually think Icebreaker is a Euphoria ripoff? Not every song with a long note in the chorus is trying to be Euphoria...the songs are completely different. If anything I think the song is taking inspiration from I Feed You My Love, especially in the live performance.
      - Spoiler alert, I actually do enjoy the UK's 2015 entry. I've known about that song since around when I first became an ESC fan and I've always liked it. Thinking about it, I actually like all of the UK's entries from 2012-2020 (except maybe 2013, sorry Bonnie :V). I also really like their 2000 and 2001 entries and even get some ironic enjoyment out of the cringefest that was their 2010 entry. And then of course, they completely knocked it out of the park with Sam Ryder.
      - With almost every Spanish Eurovision entry (or at least the ones I've heard), I feel like you could listen to it and immediately be able to tell that it's from Spain. To me Say Yay sounds more like it could've been sent by Norway or Sweden. The fact that the song is entirely in English is a big part of that. It's not really a bad thing though, just an observation.
      - Tick-Tock was in a very stacked semifinal with 3 songs fighting for 10th place, so I can see why it happened. I can at least *understand* the reasoning behind pretty much every NQ, even if it's one I strongly disagree with like Latvia or Georgia this year. With Iceland 2016, I can't.
      - I completely get what you mean about 1944. A lot of my personal winners are entries that I don't necessarily think would have been good as *actual* winners (Denmark 2002 is probably the biggest example).
      - 2016's UK jury might be the most based ever for giving Georgia 12 points

@@JH3Eurovision lol thanks for even bothering to reply to almost everything here.
      - 2002 was such a shitfest, 7th wonder should have won but i totally get why latvia won given that it was tele only
      - i mean if you're stealing a concept but putting your own spin on it then i think that's completely fine imo, i get why you find it boring, but everything clicks for me for some reason
      - yeah people think icebreaker is a euphoria rip-off. i think there's some elements sonically there, especially in the verses and pre-chorus. agree with the i feed you my love thing as well.
      - yeah 2012-2020 we went VERY safe (apart from 2015) and didn't really send anything offensive at all, which obvs was a bad thing in terms of results. apart from never give up on you (my 3rd that year) everything else was just plain boring for me.
      - only just remembered that say yay! was fully in english, i thought it was impossible for spain to send anything without some spanish, and yeah that does help to make it sound non-spanish. i doubt they're gonna send ANYTHING in even 1 word of english any time soon though after 2017 happened
      - yeah that semi final was completely stacked, 7 points between 9th and 11th as well - but the math wasn't mathing for croatia. in both jury and tele top 10 and still dont qualify - how does that happen? hear me calling finished 14th out of 18 though, so yeah i don't think we can argue too much about it

    My top 42;
    42. Albania 🇦🇱: the lyrics are beautiful but bland and uninspired

    29. Serbia 🇷🇸: Booming vocals, but the song is not for me

    11. The Netherlands 🇳🇱, my fav ESC country, almost got top 10, I like the song
    10. Bulgaria 🇧🇬: Poli should be a movie star! Her presence drops so hard in this performance and deserved 4th place, they will NEVER break us down!

    6. Russia 🇷🇺: the staging and vocals are great
    5. Montenegro 🇲🇪: That’s right, I actually love this! I could TOTALLY see this song playing in a movie with Jason Statham in it. The guy’s deep husky baritone vocals slap so hard, deserved to qualify, and the lyrics are FIRE 🔥! Hopefully they return in 2025!

Ok.....everyone has their 'this song is awazing/really does it for me and anyone who doesn't agree is just wrong" song unfortunately for you Je cherce is mine. So no like for you and I'm going to regard anything you say as sus especially since Walk on Water that i find as generic as all heck, Blue and Red that i think is crap and You Are the Only One which i think is one of the most overated songs ever.....are all higher. Also Miracle generic as all heck and Fairytale - crap are higher too. No If I were Sorry is not understed. Damn you sir! That said you are right about some things. I've never liked Icebreaker and you call Lovewave basic and have Soldiers of Love in your top 15 - wtf! Although i do understand Joe and Jake and thank you from the UK.

42 Montenegro - this didn't intrigue me, I found it boring. Deserved NQ.
41 Sweden - really sorry, I just don't like it at all, and its result makes me hate it even more, there was a lot better this year, and this came 5th? No thank you.
40 Greece - completely agree, didn't stand out, vocals were weak and not that interesting. Lost in the mix.
39 Denmark - what's this? Forgot about it.
38 Georgia - sorry.. I'm the opposite, not a fan, I can see why you like it, but it's just not me or my style.
37 Finland - bad vocals, not a great song, it's meh.
36 Moldova - another forgotten one, mid.
35 Switzerland - vocals and poor staging ruined it, it's not a great song already, it's not dreadful though. It's bearable.
34 Ireland - OMG NICKY FROM WESTLIFE, WITH THE B- most plain song this year. Nothing special, but he is a good singer definitely. (Also Ireland 2013 was underrated?)
33 Italy - sorry again, I'm not a fan, I definitely understand why it's liked, it's just again styles and types of music I like, this isn't one for me.
32 Spain - I want to like this more, but it's missing something that gives it a wow factor for me, I think Barei is good, nothing wrong vocally, I think the staging was off though.
31 United Kingdom - my country, it's alright, 2 lads having fun on stage, think everyone knew they wouldn't win, but it's a nice little pop song in the middle of the contest.
30 Albania - so upset I have to put this so low, I literally adored the Albanian version, easily would've been AT LEAST 5th for me, however, the English version and performance doesn't hit with me and I dislike it. Such a shame.
29 Lithuania - not a big Donny fan in all honesty, he's a great performer, I don't really think his vocals are outstanding, he's good, the song was mediocre though, I didn't like his 2012 song either. (His 2012 song being my 26th in 2012).
28 Cyprus - this is a solid rock song, the staging is crazy, it's decent. We're getting to the "These songs are decent." section now.
27 San Marino - I don't know why I like this a bit, I find it quite weird and mysterious, Serhat's voice makes it this way, definitely a deserved NQ though.
26 Azerbaijan - Songs decent, stagings okay I guess, vocals were bad at parts but also good at others, she hit the notes she was supposed to, overall a decent performance.
25 Slovenia - I didn't see the point of the pole and the dancer, but still, cool performance. Decent vocals mostly, another decent song.
24 Hungary - an overrated one imo, the fandom likes to say this was heavily underrated and deserved much better. He has a really nice raspy tone to his voice which I like a lot, but the song doesn't go anywhere for me. It doesn't interest me enough to connect with it.
23 Estonia - undeserved last place for sure. I see why it didn't qualify, staging was alright, vocals were alright, the performance was alright, but it DEFINITELY didn't deserve last place.
22 Belarus - guilty pleasure of mine, I didn't like it in 2016 much, but over the years it's definitely grown on me more, I quite like it these days.
21 Israel - Solid ballad, solid vocals, solid song, not much more to say.
20 France - Overrated. Imo didn't deserve top 10, but it's not bad at all. For me there was just a lot better in the year.
19 Austria - Really nice soft voice imo, nice song, glad she did quite well in the televote.
18 Netherlands - solid song, different to the mix of the final, deserved it's place imo, even if my ranking for it is much lower.
17 Germany - generic yes, but I like her and the song isn't bad. I think the staging and her outfit ruined the song, didn't deserve last for me.
16 Latvia - Good yes, good vocals yes, good staging not really. I like this, just not as much as others.
15 Russia - Sergey is so hot. Anyways moving on, solid song, any songs with a pitch change towards the end always seems to grab my attention more idk why. Solid vocals, great staging. Deserved to do well, maybe 3rd was a push, but top 10 was guaranteed imo.
14 Iceland - Underrated AS FUCK. (Excuse my French - Destiny 2021), such a powerful song and DEFINITELY deserved much better.
13 Bulgaria - fun song, glad Poli got her deserved revenge for her undeserved NQ in 2011.
12 Armenia - the opening is great, I think it was a great song to end the final with honestly, it is a bit overrated by the fandom, but overall I think it deserves the love it gets.
11 North Macedonia - Kaliopi, the Queen of 2012, Crno I Belo is 100x better, but this is still great, I think it deserved to qualify.
10 Croatia - Croatias return, odd outfit choice, I think the song overall was good, I don't see why it's hated on a lot.
09 Bosnia & Herzegovina - I really like this, this deserved to qualify for me, it's better than a lot of Bosnian entries, particularly early 2000s Bosnia (2002-2004) and 2008 in particular. Doesn't beat my favourite Bosnian entries of 1993, 2005 and 2012 (with 2005 being my ultimate favourite).
08 Czech Republic - when I originally ranked 2016 back in like 2020, this was my winner for months, then it slowly began slipping down, such great vocals, deserved much better.
07 Malta - I think this will cause great upset, but I think her 2016 entry is a LITTLE BIT better than her 2002 entry, I love both, but idk this one seems better to me.
06 Australia - best vocals of 2016 hands down, boring staging though, generic song as well. But her vocals were excellent and the song isn't bad, it's just generic and unoriginal to me.
05 Ukraine - deserved winner, my 3rd favourite winner of the past 15 years (2008-2023) only both Loreen entries beat it for me (I'm not biased I promise, I don't really like Loreen as a person, but I think her songs and vocals are great.)
04 Poland - glad the televote saved him, great song to me, great vocals, deserved his place, another former winner.
03 Norway - WTF NQ?? If they sent this in 2017, she would've probably qualified and come top 15 at least, such a strong year, we had to lose this beauty.
02 Serbia - Was my winner from late 2021 until about a month ago, it's such a powerful song, deserved higher than 18th for me. I see why it was kind of forgotten about though.
01 Belgium - she was my 2021 winner, then Serbia took over, now she's back again! Laura has such amazing charisma and stage presence, even the running order of 1 didn't ruin her, 10th place, I bet if she went 26 she might even have gained a place or two. Such a banger!
Let me know what you think.
