Söngvakeppnin 2024 - My Top 10 (with comments) [Icelandic ESC Selection]
Oh boy, Iceland...lots of issues with this one, from the selection itself being weak to people acting like RÚV is gonna destroy Eurovision or something because they dared to have a Palestinian in their selection...even though he himself said that he's been working on his entry since August and as such was not brought into the contest specifically for political reasons. 🍉
As I said, though, this selection is extremely weak and a real contender for my least favorite of the year (I'd have to really think hard about whether I like this or DMGP less). I legit had no idea what to say for like 3/4 of these songs, so if my comments seem rushed, that's because they are lol. On the whole, Iceland seems to have a real problem of picking songs with absolutely no personality in them; this was also an issue last year, and both times it's made for selections that are extremely dull and hard to sit through.

The semifinal split in this selection was so ridiculously uneven that it was actually kind of hilarious. SF1 was full of vocal meltdowns and generally weak songs, while SF2 had all of the serious contenders and was of a MUCH higher standard overall. Unfortunately, this means that some really awful entries snuck through SF1 and some really good ones got left out of SF2. I guess that ultimately d...

So...I actually had to rewatch this whole selection because I accidentally deleted my semi rankings lol. Honestly though, I didn't mind it; aside from my Bottom 2 here, for the most part enjoyed all of these live performances. I guess it helped knowing that literally everyone knew who was gonna win going in, which took a lot of the pressure off. Let's just hope they scrap the AQ system next tim...

Denmark.............................................................. It's become quite clear to me that DR's priorities are in completely the wrong places. Their show looks absolutely fantastic (arguably the best looking NF stage of the year), but that doesn't matter if THE SONGS are of this quality. To me, song-wise, this is the worst selection of the year. Very little genre variety, no nativ...

Lithuania actually had one of my favorite Grand Final lineups last year, so I was excited to see what they had in store this time around. This lineup is nowhere near as strong as 2023's, but it's very diverse and it does still have some songs that I really like. Apparently there was some really good stuff that NQed, but I haven't seen much of it myself :P (P.S. why would they change the name fr...

I wasn't very invested in this selection, if I'm being honest...mostly because the one song that I really loved was never going to Eurovision in the first place (which, I mean, based, but that didn't exactly leave me much to work with lol). Then I watched the live performances and only felt strongly about 3 of them. Then it turned out that one of the only 2 songs that I actively disliked actual...

Honestly, I didn't feel much for most of these songs when just listening to the studio versions, but after watching the live performances...I've gotta say that this was a STRONG selection. Almost every song here was elevated live in some way. They decided to go with arguably the most predictable NF winner of the entire season so far; it'll definitely do well in May, but it's not really among my...

I'll be honest, this was one of my least favorite selections of the entire season before the show, to the point where I was genuinely considering skipping the live performances entirely...that said, only Latvia knows how to take this many bad songs and get surprisingly enjoyable live performances out of them, and this was actually a fun selection to watch as a result. Unfortunately, a bunch of ...

I had no expectations for Luxembourg because they've been away from the contest for so long, and yet I'm still pretty disappointed. They completely took the wrong approach with this selection and scrapped authentic self-written songs in favor of a bunch of Swedish and Norwegian ones that don't actually showcase the Luxembourgish music industry like they said they would do. Then they didn't even...

    My top 10 with some comments: 10th | Belarus | It's a fine entry personally, I quite like his voice and the performance is good as well. 9th | Bulgaria | It's so different and out there with a weird voice but I love it, greatly performed, well sung and well done. 8th | Serbia | Definitely a deserved winner, despite it not being my winner. Powerful, vocally perfect. Great entry. 7th | Norway | A very random entry to have in my top 10 I know, but it's just such a danceable song, Guri is a great singer. The dress changes are cool as well. I really wish it qualified. 6th | Slovenia | Originally 4th, has dropped recently due to a couple of other favourites coming into it, but it's a great song, I usually love opera as well so yeah. 5th | Georgia | Was my winner until recently when I relistened to the year and realised Georgia is no longer my favourite, it's a great song, amazing debut for Georgia. 4th | Hungary | One of the two growers, I absolutely love Magdi's voice, the rasp in there is beautiful, the entire song is done extremely well. 3rd | Germany | The second grower, I never realised I liked jazz until this song, Roger was great, the song was great, everything about it is great. RIP Roger. 2nd | Finland | When I re-ranked 2007, Finland ended out on top, 1st, for 2 days. (Poor Finland), I still listen to this (along with Norway and Germany and 1st place) all the time, it's a brilliant rock song (and dare I say... better than 2006 and 2008 Finland) 1st | Bosnia & Herzegovina | This was 5th, jumped to 2nd and 2 days after becoming 2nd became my winner, I love everything about this entry, the dress, the stage, the vocals, the song itself. It's such a good entry, it definitely should've ended top 10. Running order may have killed it a little (it opened the final) but overall it did well and was amazing.

    No one knew at the time how unique and great this year would be, with the rubbish that followed; it was the same after '12 and '17, long waits in the doldrem's afterwards, years with only 1-3 good songs that are forgotten now. Pretty fair selection; Swiss and Italy in my top three

    Molly was 17 when she performed her song that night, she actually was the youngest Irish participant ever. • @JH3Eurovision
      @JH3Eurovision Před 2 měsíci

      I'll copypaste my comment from under Groot's review of it: "Anyone that knows me knows that I'm a HUGE fan of Georgia in Eurovision, but I knew I wasn't gonna feel that strongly about this song as soon as I saw that Darko Dimitrov was involved (I just don't really care for most of his upbeat stuff, he's a lot better at ballads). I don't mind the song that much myself but it's not what I enjoy Georgia in Eurovision for. I've been looking into their music scene for quite a while and I've found that they mostly excel at indie rock; not only that, but they've already had some success in Eurovision with rock entries like One More Day and Midnight Gold. THAT is what Georgia should be doing if they want to qualify while still staying true to their music scene. I like Nutsa but it's very clear that she didn't have much input in the composition of the song itself. I agree with [Groot's] critiques; the "wall of sound" approach can work VERY well if done effectively but this just doesn't really hit. 'Lacks finesse' is a great way to put it. All of that said, though, Nutsa is a fantastic live performer and she'll likely get a lot of RotW points due to her having been in loads of singing shows internationally (most notably American Idol where she was the first non-American to make the Top 10 iirc). The song is definitely made for a live performance and Nutsa absolutely will deliver in that regard. I won't be that surprised if Georgia NQs again, though." (NOTE: I've since seen Nutsa's pre-party performance and am now a lot more confident that Georgia can qualify)

    THIS YEAR IS INSANE I totally understand your thoughts on it, but I think this might've even surpassed 2014 for me. There's SO MANY good songs this year; yeah, there's some subpar stuff, but less so than most other years. Also nice, we have the same winner :o You do NOT have to read this, but I'm familiar enough with all the entries that I can actually say something about all of them! Here's my thoughts: *37. Doomsday Blue (Ireland):* I've really tried to get into this, but I just can't. Bambie Thug's style is just way too harsh on the ears for me. *36. The Tower (Poland):* Opposite problem, really; it's not bad by any means, but it's very uninteresting musically and I just don't care enough to put it higher. *35. Titan (Albania):* I actually think the revamp is better instrumentally, but the English lyrics ruined it. They sound really awkward. *34. Firefighter (Georgia):* As soon as I saw Darko Dimitrov was writing it, my expectations went downhill. It's messy to the point of being hard to remember. There's barely a structure to it. *33. Loop (Malta):* I preferred the original; the revamp feels much more static and less catchy. *32. Liar (Cyprus):* At least Cyprus' other "girlbop" entries are interesting, but this isn't. The lyrics are really cringey as well. On the other hand, I have full confidence this will rise in my ranking after the show given it's Silia Kapsis. *31. Hurricane:* JESUS the lyrics are bad. Like wow. I actually kind of like the instrumental, but the song makes me feel absolutely nothing. Who wrote this??? Of course the only good lines are in Hebrew. *30. In the Middle (Moldova):* I kinda like this song, but the staging here is very uninteresting. On the other hand, this is Moldova. *29. Always on the Run (Germany):* Not bad by any means, but it's too far on the radio friendly side to make any impression whatsoever. *28. Hollow (Latvia):* Title checks out. It's all too melodramatic and makes me feel nothing. *27. Sand (Denmark):* This is pretty nice, I'm glad it won DMGP. *26. Scared of Heights (Iceland):* People are REALLY over-exaggerating how bad this is. It's not really good or anything, but I enjoy it. Sure, it's dated, but so is her 2010 song; both of her entries are dated in a more charming way. *25. Zorra (Spain):* The message of this is genius, but the music doesn't really interest me. I'm all for synthpop but it doesn't feel very synthpoppy,. *24. We Will Rave (Austria):* I think this is completely saved by the early 2000s vibe it's going for, because without that you're left with a rave track that _severely_ lacks oomph. The beat drop is not worth the buildup. *23. Ramonda (Serbia):* Beautifully composed, written, and sang? Yes. Does it make me feel anything at all? No, sorry. *22. Fighter (Luxembourg):* I will defend this winning against Drowning in the Rain till the day I DIE. It's like if French chanson had a child with radio pop and I really like it. It could be much more interesting, but it's something I've gone out of my way to listen to. *21. Veronika (Slovenia):* I feel like this is ruined by the instrumental, it sounds way too much like a movie trailer. The songwriting is really interesting. *20. Mon Amour (France):* This is completely saved by his vocals, which gave me furious goosebumps on early listens. Without him, it would be extremely bland. *19. Dizzy (United Kingdom):* I LOVE the synth in this. I wish there was more development after the first minute, though. *18. Jako (Armenia):* I found this a bit grating on early listens, but I got used to it. It's great!! I love the amount of ethnic entries this year. *17. No Rules (Finland):* I wasn't too big of a fan of the UMK performance, but I still think this song is a banger. *16. Unforgettable (Sweden):* I get your comparison between this and 2018, but the one thing that separates those two to me is that M&M aren't annoying performers and make it a really likeable song. Also, once again, the synthesizers are GREAT. I hope they perform the song in its original key signature, as it sounds much better there. *15. Ulveham (Norway):* I'm not too crazy about the song itself, but the live performance and staging of this is just fantastic. Furious goosebumps. *14. Europapa (Netherlands):* I would love if this won, honestly. Just a banger, nothing more to say. *13. Teresa & Maria (Ukraine):* I don't think it's nearly as good as many make it out to be, but I still would be happy if this won. It's peaceful yet still has a powerful meaning to its lyrics; it's just the right amount of subtle. *12. (nendest) narkootikumidest ei tea me (küll) midagi (Estonia):* "Hey guys, VSauce here, and today I decided to go to EUROVISION" *11. One Milkali (One Blood) (Australia):* SEVERELY underrated. I like their style; this is probably an unpopular opinion, but I like this more than "2000 and Whatever". It sounds very cosmic; the use of the didgeridoo makes it sound all the more futuristic. *10. Before the Party's Over (Belgium):* Mostly because of the audio production. It sounds really good. *9. **11:11** (San Marino):* THIS IS OFFICIALLY MY FAVORITE SAMMARINESE ENTRY EVER! I've seen a lot of people blast this as "forgettable", and I would agree...if I didn't loop it for half an hour on Apple Music after it was chosen. *8. Rim Tim Tagi Dim (Croatia):* Would I get assassinated if I said this was better than Cha Cha Cha? Also I'm never listening to any NF song in "radio audio" again because that was like 90% of the reason I wasn't crazy about it initially. *7. Özünlə Apar:* Ignoring the fact that this shouldn't be allowed to compete, this is my favorite entry from Azerbaijan. Hopefully they're about to go out with a bang, huh? It's nothing mind-blowing or anything, but it doesn't have to be. Every time I listen to this song, I feel like the music is coursing through my body. It's just beautiful. *6. The Code (Switzerland):* I had high expectations for this when TEYA was expressing hype for this, and this did NOT disappoint. I have the same "movie trailer" problem with this as Slovenia, but it's not as bad here. I LOVE the mishmash of genres, and I LOVE...well, everything else honestly. *5. La Noia (Italy):* Italian ethnopop??? HELL YEAH! This is a fan favorite for a reason, it just bangs. My new favorite from Italy. *4. Luktelk (Lithuania):* The vibe this creates onstage is just insane. *3. Pedestal (Czechia):* What a rollercoaster this has been on lol. First debuted in last and held second to last for like three eternities, then I realized "hey, the song itself is actually right up my alley" and I moved it way higher, and now not only can I not factor in the live performance but the revamp is even better than the original. I love how it's heavier on the drums than the original. I also really like the added bridge; the original felt like it ended too early, but the revamp solved that issue. *2. Grito (Portugal):* I love how Portugal almost won my ranking after 4 straight masterpieces and then Greece, a country which I've only liked one song from the past decade, inexplicably leaped in front of them. Anyway, this has gotta be one of the most powerful ballads I've heard. It really hits me hard. *1. Zari (Greece)*

    Your Serbia and Portugal song choices were excellent. Didn't know how you felt about those lineups fully, so really cool that you picked songs that were both a) great and b) underrated in the results and amongst fans. Your Italy choice is less for me. Enjoyed the video though!

    So 'Zari' is apparently your favourite song of the season. I appreciate all of your NF winners, even if I don't like some of them, as they are unique and not overhyped/obvious fan favourites. Taste for 'Glow' 2nd. I also like 'Place I Call Home' & 'Zovi me lena', both overlooked gems.

      Zovi Me Lena particularly surprised me because I didn't really follow PzE. Wasn't super into any of the big fan favorites but that song stuck out to me right away. Just has a great vibe

      @JH3Eurovision Based. It wasn't among my favourites (which were the fandom's favourites actually) but PzE was my favourite NF of 2024, so there were many gems in it.

    Fiðrildi is so good, I'm glad someone else thinks it was the best of the selection. Oh and Place I Call Home! It's been stuck in my head for weeks

    Man it sucks St Pedro’s staging was so awful. He could have been an easy jury winner

      Now that all of the songs are out, I will I maintain that his song was legitimately strong enough to win Eurovision if it had the proper staging

    I already know people are gonna complain about the songs I have at the very bottom here, but keep in mind that the songs I have in the 30s here were in the mid 20s and even high teens of my actual ranking...this is just what happens when you have such a strong group of national final winners compared to a bunch of "good but not outstanding" internal selections. I doubt many people will agree with a lot of my NF picks (especially the ones I have higher up) but, personally, I'm very happy with how this list turned out, especially the Top 10. NF season was actually pretty stacked this time around. Some trivia: - I was THIS close to putting The Last Polar Bear in here. I didn't because it's technically not even eligible for Eurovision due to AI being involved, but the song just hits for some reason lol. - I thought Melfest's final was pretty horrendous but I initially had Que Sera in here instead. That or Effortless probably should've won out of the finalists, but obviously, they left some of the best stuff behind in the heats. - I didn't really look into Poland's selection but I'll say that I'm not a huge fan of WITCH-ER Tarohoro even if it would've been a smarter Eurovision choice. - Still waiting for the studio version of Breaking Bad

      Agree about your mello top picks! And last polar bear, there’s something so heartwarming bout it! Also taste for Glow 2nd, Jesse is a rap god =D

      Youre not really losing anything by not looking into the polish selections, almost nothing worth anyones time there this year. With one exception of course... Pan savyan ! I reccomen checking his song "W kolorku amaretto" because its the only one i genuinely enjoyd in my country this year. also not a big fan of witcher. Justice for pan savyan!

      'Witch-er tarohoro' is the kind of loud and meaningless song specifically designed to please the Eurovision fandom. It would clearly be a more competitive choice than 'The Tower', but I am nonetheless glad that we don't have to endure a massively overhyped entry like this during the lead up to the contest and then for 3 minutes at the Eurovision stage. Besides, we already have Slovenia's witch-themed song, which is arguably a better one. We didn't need two of these in the same semifinal...

    Very tasteful! I found myself disagreeing with quite a few towards the start of the video but in the end all of my top 10 are in your top 11, which is about as similar as things get

      @@JH3Eurovision just in general like I thought your bottom 2 were both pretty solid stuff and I liked Finland too whereas I wouldn't have Austria, Czechia, Georgia or Poland top 26 let alone top 20

    • @JH3Eurovision
      @JH3Eurovision Před 3 měsíci

      @@fireburst1760 I had Latvia a bit higher initially but upon reranking I just found it so BORING. There's no personality in it and it doesn't hit at all emotionally. Same deal with In the Middle except I never liked that one to begin with. The song does nothing for me whatsoever and I still just can't see the appeal of the staging. Nothing happens visually, they literally just stand there and clap a few times and that's it. As for Finland, I said this to someone else but it did grow on me a bit. The song is at least catchy for what it is.

    After I saw your expectations on your community post I did not expect you to put Netherlands 2nd. I must say I may be the only one, but that music is just not my type, whatever's the message they're conveying. Otherwise some similar feelings about the contest. About Ramonda I was a little like you until I saw her live performance, that changed everything!

    • @JH3Eurovision
      @JH3Eurovision Před 3 měsíci

      I know some people were disappointed by Europapa because it's a lot less "out there" than most of Joost's other music, but that's actually what I like about it lol. Not to mention that the lyrics are actually really well done for what the song is. Ramonda just doesn't hit me at all, honestly (and yes, I did watch the live performance). I've tried to get into it but it just makes me feel nothing

    Thank you so much for 1st place! Anyway, from your latest community post I thought you were going to boycott Eurovision 2024 and stop uploading Eurovision tops for this year, so I stopped searching for new content from you. I still prefer seeing from you a top without Israel (& Azerbaijan) than no top at all. We have some disagreements, but great taste no matter what.

    • @JH3Eurovision
      @JH3Eurovision Před 3 měsíci

      You're welcome. You guys were really cooking this year lol. I addressed the boycott thing in the description but basically, the way I see it, Before Show tops promote the songs and artists while After Show tops promote the show itself. I don't plan on doing an After Show top but I still want to acknowledge the songs and artists since none of what's happening is their fault, which is why I made this (many of the music videos are on their own channels and I just downloaded the rest lol).
