Just did this for mine! Dropping a comment to say thanks so much for the guide, this worked for me perfectly. Much love !!!
You're welcome!
Sir, BIG BIG BIG THANKS TO YOU!!!! I just finished doing this with my Alienware m15 R2 and I could not believe my eyes on these new temperatures. COD Warzone was spiking my temps all the way to 95 and 100C while the processor was undervolted. I have the processor running normally and the temperatures are 60C while gaming and around 40C on idle. I did exactly what you did and bought the same paste you have in the video and I have not seen any overheating whatsoever. Subbed and liked your video.
Glad I could help! It's a little daunting at first but once you know what you're doing its not too bad. The screws are the main problem IMO. The fear of not getting one out is really terrifying. Congrats on your temps.👍
@@Meanpooh I actually stripped one and had to force it out with a tool. Thankfully I had a bunch of dell laptop screws laying around and I replaced the right screw. What terrified me the most doing this was the little touchpad flex cable. People should avoid removing it from the motherboard and remove it from the opposite end. I actually broke the little tab off the mobo connector (I could not express in words how careful I was being and still broke it) but I was able to repair it.
Sad to hear that. Opening these machines can sometimes be a risky endeavor. Glad everything came out alright afterwards.
Hi! I have aliware m15 r2 and i want to repaste. What is the thermal paste you used. Complete name of you can
Damn alright this comment convinced me to do mine :)
thank you for the demonstration meanpooh, i just saw your m15 r3 videos in order, it seems that your temps were way better before the repaste video? Before your cpu was 70s-80s , in the repaste test video it shows 90s-104s, am i messing something?
Awesome video man,I repasted my m15 r3 couple weeks back, the screws suck.stripped a few haha
You are welcome. It really sucks that the screws in such a premium machine are so delicate. Screws in the Acer Nitro 5 are stronger IMO. Surely they wouldn’t have went with a lighter screw to cut down on weight because that’s what it’s looking like to me?.
Awesome Video! Bro Used this to Repaste My Alienware m15 R4 (2021) Thank you keep up good work
Glad it helped, I appreciate the comment!👍
How much was the temperature and performance difference ?
Idle 44c highest temp 70c both CPU and GPU
Performance I'm able to hit ultra setting with no throttle
it might seem like a long process but i found it much easier to do this than with other laptops. no bs mechanisms that make it hard to disconnect cables/connectors.
Thank you so much for this step by step and very informative guide. I have the same pc
This was extremely helpful. Though I do wish that we could get to see which screws he was pulling out.
Hi! Would you know if the insides of the m17 r3 is pretty much the same? Great video!
05:00 😆
Thanks a lot for the detailed video. Repasting didn't solve my temperature problem, but thanks to you I tried it on my own and put the laptop back together without making anything worse.
Does your laptop turnoff due to over heating?
Hey! Unfrotunately, my CPU fan just gave out and I will need to replace it. Just to make sure it's replaceable, is it actually possible to un-latch the broken fan and attach a new one?
Thank you! This will be my go-to guide when I repair my unit.
Thank you so much for this. Everything was going good till the last cooling system screw ....the same one actually that you had. I had no tools so I did something risky and turned the entire board like a wheel and it loosened it lol😅 and mission success !!!
Now that’s something that I’ve never come across. 🤔. Turning the complete board. When you’re desperate to get something done, you’ll try anything. I know, I’ve been there before. Anyway congratulations on getting it resolved👍
Thanks for the video man much appreciated. My r4 cpu gets to 100° even undervolted on most games. I've just been turning the mhz way way down and taking a big performance hit.
Where did you get the replacement screws? Gonna grab some preemptively haha
You're welcome. I got them here amzn.to/3DryMLe. It's a shame really that such a well built machine suffers from this thermal problem. Although the machine can handle the high temps without throttling I too would much prefer it to be lower. Every game I play for the most part gets a modified undervolt setting. The Alienware control center from my experience interferes with Throttlestop so I try to keep it closed and or not loaded. I can usually keep the temps pretty low while staying almost near 4.3 as seen in this video.czcams.com/video/2vkE6JQi5U4/video.html&ab_channel=Meanpooh
Hope all goes well with the repaste.
quality tear down vid . Well done
Thanks, I appreciate it. The screws that are used in the machine are very delicate so be careful. They are easily stripped.
How did you get the io back port removed? We have one and it seems like it doesn't want to budge. Removed all the screws required
Does the fan connected to the motherboard??? I was planning to clean the fans of my m15 r3 since there are dust that accumulates the fan blades itself, but I'm too scared since it's only 5 months old.
Very informative video. Unfortunately, all the same screws stripped for me as well. Screw No. 10 in the final part got completely stripped and I could unscrew it. It's so unfortunate. My laptop has been hitting 90-100C ideal. And, it's unable to push more than 30 fps in New world because of throttling. Atleast, I got it back together and it works. Awesome video by the way. I was so close.
Congrats on the successful repaste. I have yet to replace the screw even though I have the replacements sitting on my desk. I may have to revisit this machine. When I first stripped a screw I was pretty upset and scared at the sametime as it was so small and I knew it would be a pain to get out, which it was.
The same no. 10.
Jesus Christ i dont know jow u guys did it. I still cant get it out. Only option seems to be to cut open a slot on top. 🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️😭
I just bought this exact laptop from micro center for $1,900. Loving it so far and it does get pretty hot. Hoping I won't have to have this done anytime soon. I still have my alienware 14 laptop from 2013 going strong, never had an issue, however, they both live on cooling pads. 🍻
ACC has some really good profiles to keep it cool. Balanced power and Cool is a good combo.
solid instructions, amazing video.
Much appreciated!
Hello I got the same laptop and after repasted on thermal grizzly extreme my GPU Mhz going down and temperature just going up to 85c. What I can do now?
Gonna try this this weekend. Got a thermal pad measure tape, gonna replace the pads with valorant thermal pads.
Good luck. 👍
Thank you SOOOOO mush
Wow thats a big ass job, when i buy a laptop now i always check to see how hard it will be to change the paste and clean/replace the fans and if the ram is upgradeable/slotted.
Yeah, it sure is. Not a fan of the reversed MBs.
I was gonna do a LM repaste, but this doesn't even seem worth it LOL.
Edit: Think I'll just stick to undervolting and small frequency changes to the CPU. As long as it's under 95 C I don't care enough to go through this hassle and mess up some screws. Kudos to you!
Thanks. Since replaced the screws and all is going well. Taking it apart is a job but once you do it, it’s alright. Getting the undervolt just right will pay off with most games. Here lately, undervolting is giving my machine problems and ACC uses undervolting within its software. Could be a conflict.
Dear god I thought the same, I'm going to sell this stupidly designed laptop and get something better like a Razor or XMG...worst laptop I have ever owned !
Una pregunta, no me funciona el teclado. Aunque el botón de encendido si funciona el teclado no responde y tampoco brilla, el botón de encender y los Licea de atrás funcionan pero las del teclado no. Me podrían alguna posible falla?
Opened up my m17 r4 to dust off the fans, followed this guide on disconnecting the battery from this video. "Gently pull to the right/use tab if needed" all that did was lead to me pulling the tape thats on the connector off. Horrible advice, watched another video where the guy sorta shimmys and just pulls it off, that worked. Couldnt even get the tape back on all the way now i feel weird cause the cables are exposed.
Any before/after temps under load? I might have missed it but I see only a before/after comparison when idle. If you can still remember, how much did you gain in temps when the GPU is stressed and with fans at full speed? Thanks!
More than likely you will have to look through my review of the machine to see some load temps before repaste. All videos are uploaded in chronological date order.
Best of all. Thank you
Thanks my friend. Glad you found it useful. I know its pretty long but I tried to put as much as possible in there.
I have like 3 of these that need thermal pasting, they all have heat issues. I've worked with Dell but last time a tech came out he messed one up worse than it was. I not scare of doing tech stuff like this, have plenty experience on working and trouble shooting electronics but just didn't want to have to do it myself. I got my Thermal Grizzly but do I need any special tools? and those boards make me feel like I'm gonna break something, anything special you did to remove those screws that gave you problems? Great video man, perfect guide to see what I'm in store for.
The screws are very fragile. They have loctite on them, some more than others. If you accidentally strip a screw it’s going to be a bitch to get out. I had problems with 3 and managed to get them out. Going to replace them on the next repaste. I used other drivers all the way to needle nose pliers. Others have ran into the same problem, some could not remove the SSD. Good Luck.
@@Meanpooh ok good to know. Thanks. Of all things the SSD’s, lol.
@@Meanpooh So worked on two of my units and though the SSD screws were a little tighter than others, the real pain was dealing with a stripped screw. Number 10 on the heatsink assembly gave me issue so I used the super glue trick and used one of the fan screws to replace it. Ill replace that screw soon. Thanks for the guide, really helped. Oh I did come across one issue. I had an extra cable, tiny ribbon cable that I can't seem to find on your video. Its connected to the white connector above the let fan power connector. It's right near the end of the board on the left side as your looking at the board. It was a pain because its so tiny and has tape on it and wasn't sure how to remove it.
@@madmandocrypto Those darn screws are a mess. I tried to find that ribbon but I don't see it in the vid as you mentioned. Glad you got it back together. Nothing worse than putting something back together and you have an extra screw laying around.
Amazing video! I am facing a small problem where my mouse pad isn’t working after I reassembled. Can you please indicate which cable I should recheck please.
It's the black and white checkerboard cable at the bottom middle.
Out of curiosity, where did you get your replacement screws? I see various screws for sale from various places, but I wanted to know if there was a place you preferred to buy stuff like that.
I use these from Amazon. amzn.to/3JsZ96s
@@Meanpooh Thanks! That's a good little collection. I think I need to pick up one today.
Would the process be any different for an M15 R5 Ryzen edition?
Did I miss it, or did you not repad while you were in there?
how did you remove the stubborn screws on the laptop? I'm scared to open my m15 I think that i might strip those screws
I answered your question here czcams.com/video/TENPhiqxOTU/video.html
Hopefully your repaste will go smooth. These screws are so small and fragile, using a driver at any angle other than 90 degrees could cause an issue with stripping.
How do I clean the fans if they are all dusty?
I completely stripped screw number 8 anyway to get it out?
Thank you so much
I have a question I have a father from Alienware M17 R4 Both of my fans were damaged, and when I searched, I found many different sizes than the ones I have. Is there any suggestion?
You will have to search by your machine model or find the schematics. You may find them on Dell's site in the downloads section.
Hey meanpooh what's your experience with Kryonaut how long do you go between Repastes I can't seem to find any information on longevity of it and I have this exact laptop now. I keep reading about pump out etc I don't like repasting alot
That's all I use. I only repaste when I detect a significant increase in temperature. Most of the time I repaste when making a tutorial.
@@Meanpooh have you used it for longer than a year before without needing to repaste? I just don't wanna have to repaste every 6 months especially with this flipped motherboard
@@vidfinnx No, I only had it for a week. I just wanted to do it for a video.
@@Meanpooh sorry I meant on your other laptops how long your Kryonaut Repastes have lasted or needed to be redone as I have no experience with it I only have used Arctic MX4
@@vidfinnx On the machines that I have, they've only been repasted once. Still doing good.
Just did this repaste and it lowered my temps a lot! I do get an error on startup though, a display error, but the machine still works if I plug into an ext. monitor but keeps flashing the 2 red 7 blue error. Any ideas on what I should do to stop the error? I've already tried reseating the display cables 3 times and that did not work.
Have you taken a magnifying glass to see if any pins on the cable are damaged? The error you are getting is a sign of display failure. If it was working before you did the repasted then its safe to say that the problem lies at the connector. If you think it may be damaged, you can try here for a replacement www.parts-people.com/index.php?action=category&id=151&subid=1413&refine=lcd+cable
Make sure nothing is inside the motherboard connector that may be causing the pins to not touch.
Does anyone know the thickness of the thermal pads?
I just got this pc r4 with an rtx 3070. Same chassis so its a similar process. Should I be doing this also? I never did it for my old one
Naa, you should be ok. I pretty much did this for the tutorial. The ACP has some pretty good profiles to use to keep it cool.
2 years later I'm looking to do it haha. Old paste is suffering. I'm going with a Honeywell ptm7950 thermal pad. Have you ever tried it before?
Hi there, is this the same process for M15 R5 ? Thanks a lot
Not sure but I bet it's similar. Hmm that reminds me, I need to replace those stripped screws. Might have to dismantle soon as I've had the replacements for a while now.
Haha, came here looking to repaste an r5 also
hey meanpooh can you please make a video, about what tools you will need to build a PC please?
Easy question.
1 Phillips driver(4way) and maybe a precision driver set for around 5dollars. That's all.
Do you know if there is any variation from this to an M15 R4? i know they use the same boards I think i'm gonna do the same for mine.
I think they are the same besides the R4 having access to the 30 series GPU and faster processor.
Great video, def will help me if I go about attempting the repaste. I have seen they do paste it well along with thermal pads. The CPU series just too hot.
Thermals are a lot better now. There has been an update and has helped a lot. The cool mode is a decent profile to use. Beware of the screws. Some are tight and all have loctite on them.
@@Meanpooh hi, which update are you talking about?
What screw driver you need for this?
How much wattage is the 2070?
Help needed asap
I did this but my alien light is turning on and off now .. flashing red and blue? Everything's connected in the order you connected?
See what you have here www.dell.com/support/manuals/en-us/alienware-15-laptop/alienware-15-r3-service-manual/diagnostics?guid=guid-5c341b78-b63d-499c-89d4-d341c006e437&lang=en-us
@@Meanpooh What is the model of this motherboard? Anybody know
Have you tried lm on it?
on a scale of 1-10, how bad would it be to not replace the stripped screws? thank you for the video, by the way! Very informative.
I've put off doing this to mine for over a year, but the other day it shut off due to overheating (my fault, I had the performance set to "quiet," and forgot, then launched a game)... so it's time to face the music and re-paste like i'd planned to from the start. it was actually this very video that scared me off from doing it back then, because this is all much more complicated than my previous laptops, lol.
It's not that bad. It depends on where the screw was located. If it's around the CPU or GPU area you will want to replace that ASAP as its holding pressure down with the heat sink. If it's anywhere else where more than 3 screws are going in then 1 missing will not hurt. Until I got a replacement, I had reused the screw but just barely screwing it back in. Recently I dismantled the laptop to replace it. I've had it sitting on my desk for months. I had to do it so I could test some thermal grease on the laptop. So far it's going great but more testing is needed.
@@Meanpooh great, thank you! I didn't see this reply til just now. I'm currently sitting in front of my disassembled laptop... And basically all 10 heatsink screws are stubborn and not budging. Would you happen to have some advice?
@@RobertZabulonian I had to add some pressure that’s more than usual. It also helps if you have a driver that fits perfectly inside the screw head. Having a wide handle along with added pressure works. I got most out with a small precision but the stubborn ones had to get the bigger driver.
@@Meanpooh thank you. Maybe none of the screwdriver heads I tried fit perfectly, then... I went so far as to press a finger beneath the other side of the board where the screw was so I could apply more pressure from the top, and still they won't budge. Instead, they warp and strip the screw 😬
So I went and got more screwdrivers and managed to loosen 4 of the 8 uncooperative screws. But the remaining 4 simply will not budge. I suppose I can try super glue, and if not that, then I'll have to put it back together and maybe order a stripped screw extraction kit
But those are expensive and I'm uncomfortable using one on a motherboard.
Also this is so much work to repaste good lord..
Yes, it is.
After I did this i got a warning that said the battery cannot be identified. Any way to fix this?
Make sure your bat is fully plugged in, I had work done on mine.. same issue but they didn't plug it in all the way. Hope it works and if not I hope you got it fixed 🙏
Where's the cmos in this thing?
Can i add a Dell M.2 PCIe NVMe Class 35 2230 SSD??
@@Meanpooh I am using power option to limit the CPU clock at 2.6. that helps the heat a lot. I will try throttlestop and see how it goes. thanks
Yeah. Just go into FIVR and set it to your desired frequency across the board. The lower the cooler.
@@Meanpooh well, it's on base clock 2.6 now. I just recently contacted Alienware support and upload my CPU temp data at 4.6 GHz while playing the game for an hour, during the test the CPU clock dropped due to the overheating on the CPU. CPU temp at 100 c the whole time. So, Alienware decides to replace my fan and heat sink assembly again. since my laptop is still in warranty. But I think the problem is the factory paste since the fan and heat sink assembly was replaced a year ago with the factory paste...... maybe this time I will use the paste from your video. Hope it will last longer
144 and 109 values are mV (undervolt)? oO
I’m begging you to get ahold of a m15r6 to redo this video
Nice tutorial will be useful when I change the cooling paste. But I don't think my laptop will survive this. Today the temperature is 96 degrees, everything on the laptop is turned off, Aloenware Command Center is on full speed and the temperature is still 100 degrees. Undervolt does not work, the max CPU power plan of 99% does nothing. I think I'm giving up and it's time to change my laptop, I've had it for 2 years :(
I still have my machine and I hate the ACC. Its a waste of space. I tried removing it with a fresh install and it made it worse. It's almost like the ACC is tied to the BIOS and knows when its not installed. Anyway, your machine is made to run at the temps you are getting. It will not hurt it. What you should do is use the cool setting for your fans and balanced for power. That should drop some degrees off. For good measure try to raise the rear of the machine so its not flat on the table. BTW, ACC messes with undervolting. It will change the settings but will not reflect in the app. If you undervolt, do not open ACC.
@@Meanpooh Thank bro,i try change thermal paste, with your tutorial :)
Good luck friend. Repasting this machine is not fun.
@@Meanpooh But when i uninstall awc how ca i setup keyboard led fx audio etc ?:)
@@Meanpooh I changed the paste, thanks to your guide it wasn't that difficult. ACC still shows 95-100 degrees. However, when it is set to full speed, it doesn't heat up, but the problem is still there, I don't know what to do anymore 😔
Great job, but never use thermal grizzly! I tried shin etsu and it`s much better and much cheaper.
Hello there i really need the wallpaper of alianware m15 r2
No chance I’m every going to do that. I’ll be too scared.
Rightfully so, especially if you have a tight screw.
@pleaseunlinkme Sorry to hear but I would unplug the battery, the AC of course and possibly the battery backup. I would then try to remove as much as possible and then try to shake it out. If its under the board you can be sure that its resting on it somewhere. Try to flip flop it left to right and vice versa. Do it slow so can try and figure out where it is.
Hey meanpooh! Alienware is out of my budget and not my most favourite gaming laptops due to the overpriced prices.
Looks beautifully made and designed.
I wouldn't think it would need a new thermal paste.
I been doing GTA V videos lately meanpooh only story mode since I'm replaying the third time.
remember TG Kryyonaut in a hot laptop will need re-paste every 3-12 months
Yep.
So I returned my M17 R3 and picked up this M15 R3 which is MUCH better with the fan noise, the 17 inch unfortunately was just crazy overbearing you can hear it on my CZcams channel it's sad I like a bigger screen but the M15 is great, mine came with a regular 2070 and Gsync
Loving this machine so far! I know what you mean with the bigger screen. I much prefer the 17 inch. So much better when gaming. 3000 series will be available on the 26th from what I hear.
@@Meanpooh to rich for my blood lol I got a great deal on this one from Dell outlet direct. I have been debating between keeping this one or keeping my MSI GE75 Raider with same specs. My GE75 Raider is WAY louder and only has optimus, my M15 R3 has Gsync and A MUX switch, which refresh rate did you get? If not the 300hz you probably have a mux switch which is a huge diff in performance and temperatures to check open alienware command and hit FN+F7. Such a hard toss up the majority of my time gaming is spent on quiet/silent mode due to kids etc
@@vidfinnx I have the 300hz panel with no Optimus. Direct connect to the graphics with poor battery. I rarely use my machine without an AC outlet nearby so its not that big of a deal. The fans on the Raider are indeed louder and easily drowns out the M15. Although its louder it's still a great machine.
i need help please
Think I am going to rip off the mesh when I do this to mine.
It should help a little bit. If you can regulate the outside temperature that would be best.
@@Meanpooh I love my house 68F 🤣 I don’t really need to repaste at the moment because I use an eGPU so takes the stress off the laptop. Temps are in the 68C for cpu with eGPU
That's great, im around 70-72F.
@@Meanpooh theres no way
I had no improvements in thermals with thermal grizzly kryonaught.
Have you tried undervolting as well? Here lately, undervolting is difficult on this machine. I believe it's because of the Alienware Command Center and all the updates that have been coming out.
@@Meanpooh I guess I have semi handled the heating issue by setting the TPD on the CPU to 45w and the heat down to 85C. Set a fan curve for quiet to full speed from 75C and up, and set throttle stop to run at startup. As far as thermals after re-paste, CPU jumped to 100C regardless, probably because Alienware has the processors set to redline for performance...At least that's what I have read almost all the temp complaints source the issue towards. but Idle I'm between 55-60C so that's better than low to mid 70's. Thanks for the video, It helped me to disassemble and reassemble my laptop.
Hi . Where is bios battery?
How can I recover bios?
While disassembling I did not see one. However I did find this.
"This computer is designed without an RTC coin cell-battery. After a service incident where the system battery is disconnected, when the battery is fully discharged, or when the system is reassembled and turned on, an RTC reset cycle will occur. When an RTC Reset cycle occurs, the system turns on and off three times. An "Invalid Configuration" error message is displayed prompting you to enter the BIOS and configure the date and time. The computer starts functioning normally after setting the date and time.
CAUTION Removing the battery resets the BIOS setup program’s settings to default. It is recommended that you note the BIOS setup program’s settings before removing the battery."
Also this may help
"Recovering the operating system
When your computer is unable to boot to the operating system even after repeated attempts, it automatically starts Dell SupportAssist OS Recovery.
Dell SupportAssist OS Recovery is a standalone tool that is preinstalled in all Dell computers installed with Windows operating system. It consists of tools to diagnose and troubleshoot issues that may occur before your computer boots to the operating system. It enables you to diagnose hardware issues, repair your computer, back up your files, or restore your computer to its factory state."
If your BIOS is damaged or you can't get it to POST then you may have to contact DELL.
I did recover my laptop with os recovery one week ago but it resolved my problems, i can't stop overclocking, and alienware command center crashed my laptop, it doesn't work normally when i install alienware command center ,
@@siyastlkbrli9418 In your BIOS make sure that the Intel Speed Shift Technology is enabled in the Advanced tab. This was disabled for me and ACC did not work correctly. This software is complete garbage IMO and I wish they would get rid of it. The last thing you could try would be to do a complete system recovery and start fresh. BTW, I tried doing a fresh Windows install without ACC and it didn't go so well.
@@Meanpooh I'm thankful to you, they are very important information for me thanks a lot. I'll do when your said, ( and so sorry my English, i don't know well in English, )
I love the laptop but man, that is not easy to take apart..
I love it too and I agree. Access is awful.
how do I know if there’s dust or not lol
If you've had it for a while there will be dust of some kind in there. Start by looking on the outside of your machine. If you have buildup you can be sure there is dust on the inside.
can yu point out where the ram is? i have an m15 r3 and is it sill upgradeable even tho its soldered in?
It's not upgradeable
try our all time favourite, GTA SANANDREAS on it :)
I'll try to get to it.

We’ll see. I’m sure it’ll be high.

who tf decided to design the motherboard upside down jeez...
A lot of people asked that question, bad decision IMO.

tooooooooooooo much paste, dont do it like this....
disgusting design
Reversed MB is bad. I dislike it as well.
can we change the processor on this laptop ?
