      I used to prefer smaller plants, but now all the ones that made it are big and now I can not agree with you more, bigger plants are easier to care for in that they give you more wiggle room for error. So big plants all the way. But the accomplishment of growing them from a small plant is special. Ahh.... yeah, bigger plants for sure.

    I do love big plants, but having small ones gives me the chance to have a large variety at home. It is also lovely watching them grow into bigger versions and comparing how far they have come. Smaller plants can also give you chance to afford a more expensive variety. Basically, I have and love both sizes at home ! 👍🏼🌿xxx

    Small when I first buy plants because I like the feeling of nurturing something to grow; and large a year later when they aren't as big as I want them. I worry less about my established plants and I enjoy that. I take care of plants because it's supposed to relax and de-stress me, so I try to avoid plants that need a lot of helicoptering.

    There are some plants that I notoriously over/under water (adansonii, ferns and calatheas for example). I switched a lot of plants to semi-hydroponic in a pure rocky mixture of DIY Lechuza Pon (1 parts lava rocks, 1 parts pumice, 1/2 parts zeolite) and fertilize with diluted liquid fertilizer and many of my plants are living their best life. It's a good option for people who struggle with watering.

  • @lindsayjohnston1785
    @lindsayjohnston1785 Před 3 lety +1

    I've noticed that some times when I bring home a bigger mature plant, it struggles more acclimating to my environment compared to if it were smaller or a seedling. For example, I bought a moderately mature philodendron verrucosum with super furry petioles and big leaves, thick stem, etc. It definitely slowly declined over the next few months as far as the foliage go, but the roots have remained good. Eventually a leaf got stuck unfurling and it stunted its growth. Although it kept growing, its foliage reverted big time as if it were a mid cutting. On the other hand, I also bought a small verrucosum that was pretty much seedling size. It has absolutely thrived and has never had a hitch. I'm not sure if it's because it's so much younger it's easier for it to acclimate compared to a mature plant that might experience more shock moving to a new home. But definitely an observation I've made.
    I do agree in alot of cases with you, though. Small plants are typically definitely more fussy than more established ones in my experience. Just a few types I've noticed are the opposite as far as acclimation goes that I found interesting.

    I prefer buying small plants first so I can get to know how to care for things with the higher, more specific needs, and get to understand them better! I'm only a couple of years into pot gardening and been taking it slow, I want to understand what I'm doing and it would break my heart to get a big plant only to slowly kill it. I have sprung for a couple of bigger plants now though and some of my first plants are starting to get big, so I'm getting more and more confident! I'm fussy and tend to lean towards anxious helicopter plant parenting so it was a bit of a journey figuring out how to care well for them

      @Kev1nL Před 3 lety

      Not all. Some aren't quite as picky, but peace lillies and prayer plants for example would not like it and will show it on the leaves. If you do use tap it's best to let it sit so the added chemicals evaporate off which decreases issues with using tap water. People say 24 hours but for some plants I don't bother waiting that long every time. My dwarf banana plant doesn't seem to care. If you're unsure of the plant, distilled may be best. Or you can just risk it and see how the plant reacts if it is a less sensitive type of plant.
