Congo: The tribe under threat | Unreported World

- In ‘Unreported World’ we’re in the Congo with a tribe under threat, as the forest they hunt for food in is put off limits to protect the wildlife. The Baka tribe tell us of threats and intimidation by the proposed park’s guards who are part-funded by the World Wildlife Fund.
Ade Adepitan travels deep into the rainforests to see how the Baka are fighting for food. Is the survival of endangered species being put above their own?
WARNING: You may find scenes of
butchered animals upsetting.

A lot of respect for this reporter. He is always sent to the least wheelchair accessible countries and does an awesome job
Maybe because he wants to go...
@Too Much BBC's
.
this made me laugh out loud! so true!!
I know you didn't mean it this way, but I love how your comment somewhat implies the documentary team just send him to rocky and muddy areas just to fuck with him. "Oh you're in a wheelchair? You're going to Africa"

Its wonderful to see someone with limited mobility like me reaching places like this, and making a difference. Thank you, it gives me hope
Youuu broo, I might now a bit how you feel I spend a good time with a locked knee and a wheelchair. But yeah really don't let anything ruin your fun! I really hope you have some support though we're you're staying and yeah man I can just wish you the best.
Keep up the positive energy and climb greater heights Mijc Osis. I wish you the best.
Mijc Osis he was in the british para olympics, think he won a gold medal. He does appear to be a very humble man and has done quite a few documentries.
Mijc Osis God bless you
just truth K thought it was the same guy from Oz Penitentiary.
If the government dont want them to hunt in the forest then they should've provided alternative source of their foods.
As long as it looks good on paper and the government comes off as concerned for the rainforest. They don't care about the people; don't even care about the animals, there's no restrictions or hunting Seasons/licences at the bushmeat market. but to be making the right sounds ; use the words Elephant and Protected Forest it's all that's needed. Despicable third world political.
www.jw.org/en/bible-teachings/questions/what-gods-kingdom-will-do/ .
That's the whole point of making their hunting impossible. They want everyone to be dependent on the powerful for food. Let people find their own sources of nutrition.
no,provide them with alternate food like bread, cheese, pizzas, prawns can be killing them silently like u and me a now addicted
I love Ade Adepitan. His documentaries are fresh and breath taking. Kudos to Unreported.
*i love how the reporter takes critical look at the issue from both directions without supporting any.* *thats how journalism should be like*

when that girl said you can only complain if you have money, it’s sad but she’s very right everywhere around the world indigenous people are being ripped from their cultural.
So true💯
That's true
The other people that is trying to control them are also from the area ,but it is the outside interference that is causing all the problem.Maybe the outsiders wanted the land to do mining
Not so much in Aotearoa bro,
Im right behind our Maori people and most pakeha are.
I respectfully suggest you broaden your perception and understanding.
There is no such thing as 'indigenous'. Indigenous only exists in present tense. However, the people who live in a region today, 100 years back, 500 years back, will be totally different.
Humans mutate and migrate. The only true definition of 'indigenous' relates to all humans being indigenous to earth.
The entire human species is at crisis point. The solutions we need are global. We better start thinking global if we want the species to survive. One race, one planet.
I am not saying we shouldn't acknowledge and honor the culture of a people. On the contrary, we need to honor each other in a much more profound manner.
It's absolutely ridiculous. They have lived there for generations in balance with nature, but some external corporation imposes they must leave their own land. This needs to be raised if anything, they should have been made the guards not outsiders.
@@survivalinternational3026 "decolonise conservation" wow I'd never heard it termed like that before but these 2 words you've used have suddenly opened my eyes even further so thank you! I was going to share this documentary so now I'll add that point when sharing
Welcome to america.yes I am black my ancestors were captured and tortured to build this America that used to say we weren't even considered a whole person but a fraction
Am also wondering, how come now's when there's a danger after all those years of existence?
@Survival International - Subscribed.
@True ToHim - Exactly: this rainforest has been inhabited by our kind (Homo Sapiens Sapiens / Anatomically Modern Man) for some 100 000 years. 90 000 y/o harpoons are piled underground, yet no "civilised" _conservation_ was needed.
Guards of what? White people need to stop trying to control life and it's cycles.
Congo maybe the poorest country but it has the richest forest and untapped natural resources including diamonds!!
Very true 85% of the natural resources comes from the Congo such as coltan Congo is the richest country in the planet! And also Angola and Congo used to be one country years ago called Kingdom Kongo if we stayed together we would’ve been the biggest country in Africa !
I'M GoneWithTheWind! FABULOUS!! And how do you benefit from?

I’m all for protecting wildlife but this has gone way too far human rights has been trampled upon. These Bakka people don’t deserve these kind of treatment
It's just a land grab tactic. They did the same to the Massai in Kenya then turned around and built resorts for tourists on their land. utter bullcrap.
Well they are killing endangered species, if they were more civilized, maybe this wouldn't be happening
@Canadian Guy😊 and to add some more, they should also plant rice, corn and any plants that gives carbohydrates then it will be abudant foods for months or year or till the next harvest. I can see the soil is very fertile so no need to aply any fertilizer. If somebody will teach farming to them, then surely they will not depend only by hunting in the forest.

This man that is in this report is what you call awesome. He is in a wheel chair in the forest shinning light on these peoples problems. It shows that just because you may have a disability it does not have to control your life. Awesome documentary and much love for you and yours.
Great job, so important that you covered this topic. People's basic needs are SO much more important than any other issue named here. Reporter did a great job showing compassion, and the video does a great job that we can look into the eyes of these people and see their needs
A reporter who actually says "sorry" to the subjects even if he doesn't have a part in their misery. Most reporters just ask the most provocative questions and go about the situation so formally you begin to wonder if they any have feelings at all.
Ade Adepitan is a great journalist
These people depend on the animals as a way of survival. Whether you like or not, the animals are their food. I know I'm going to trigger certain vegans with this comment, but I honestly don't care. Stop worrying about the animals and stop withholding food from innocent people (especially children).
Princess Ama The animals would be fine if there wasn’t mass poaching... those people have survived off that jungle for centuries. They’ve sustained each other for a long time. So I completely agree.
@@fional.1144 my thoughts exactly. Native tribespeople have been using the forest as a resource for many, many, years and it still managed to stay intact and not have animals/plants be extinct or endangered. Only when outside sources come in with greedy hands do we see problems of this sort.
I feel sad for these people, but Elephants are a keystone species. I wish all animals were left alone unless you can rebreed them and keep their population under control as well. The government should provide fisheries, rabbits, and chickens to all of the villages, along with proper training on how to raise them, in order to keep fed and support the people in the villages. Read this article and try to understand the value we have of keystone species. www.nationalgeographic.org/encyclopedia/keystone-species/
Vegans are godless fools.
@@ottermooseprime1060 while your point is valid, it doesn't address the problem of outside influence which I believe is the ultimate problem. External entities come in and destroy habitats and animals for their own financial gain, they give little to nothing back to the people who live there. They reap the benefits of the environment but do nothing to preserve or restore it. Native people are not responsible for the damage we see now, and in part neither is the government. It is very hard to repair something that you did not do major damage to, so we shouldn't be telling them that they need to fix a problem they didn't create.
I really love this channel and has really changed how I view the world. I also have a massive amount of respect for the reports and the one in this video in particular.
Give them a 100 chicken. Farm and self sustain. Chicken can live on anything.
Why should they eat chicken they own that land Yes protect the animals But they need to protect the people also Just let them catch animals which are not on any list And put up fire cracker defence to protect there crop no harm done to elephant WWF must know these people need to live for hundreds of year co living.protect the people they have rights

So true Africa is one of the richest continent in the world and its so sad to see the struggled

I didn’t say they aren’t being bought by the Chinese but you are getting things wrong, like I said the poor pygmies are likely hunting the elephants. The guards are against both.
I love watching all your videos.. Kudos to your hard works.God bless You!🙏 It's been a year but I felt like this was taken just yesterday.
I feel that tribespeople who have lived and hunted in the forest and know protected areas should be allowed to continue doing so, within reason.
This tribe has lived in the forests for centuries and centuries and they have managed to preserve the forests and all its inhabitants all this long. But their existence is all of a sudden threatened. It's the same scenario in Uganda where the same tribe is under threat and they are always under looked by the other neighbouring tribes. This is their life and that what they all know-hunting for survival. So if their source of survival is threatened, it's as if you want to wipe this tribe out the face of the earth. Don't just forbid something well knowing that it's their life without offering alternatives!
It’s because they now have the technology to quickly change the landscape, guns and money.

The tribe should have the first say, as the forest is their home and have proved them selves after generations that living with the ecology of the forest so as not to endanger their own food source just by them doing what they have naturally done for generations and wish to exist in their own natural way, who is really at fault? It would seem to me that unless you are of the native tribe just trying to survive as you have always done and are not providing for outside use, you should be left alone. Anyone else, should be given to the tribe as tribal laws far exceed the greed the modern unnatural way of things. The natural people of the forest should by right, have protection without any interference from any other person upon their way of living and be afforded the status of endangered species, as THEY are the forest.
It's always " We're launching an independent investigation "....meaning "we're not doing shit"

Resorts for tourists are good idea , but it will bring tourists which will exploit nature ( liter ring ) , it will bring many zoos and circus
You can get money from tourism BUT NEVER MADE A COUNTRY's Base on tourism , it will fall when tourist dosent find this place good or one day due to excessive tourism the place will not be what it once was

What they really need is for other countries to leave them the hell alone!
I'm guessing that you don't know the history of these poor people, and where they really come from.
These people are not indigenous to that place, they were brought there in the 15th century as slaves by the order of king John lll to be exact.
They are the result of the the Spanish inquisition.
These people once lived in Spain and Portugal arriving from Yahuda, i.e. (from judah) and as a result of not converting over to roman Catholicism, the were put into slavery.

Why aren't these folks involved in the protection and running of their native lands that are to become a nature park? They're just as much a part of that nature and have been for a very long time. Plus involving locals is one of the best ways to protect wildlife.
If they had jobs protecting the area and learned how to tell which animals are plentiful to hunt, which they probably already know, they could continue to thrive for a long time.

See this is the journalism the world needs and deserves to see. This is a complicated and intricate issue with many sides - many positive and negative and various standpoints. Sadly here we are seeing how local efforts are not working and something else needs to be done. I know it sucks saying we can't save all the forest or all these indigenous people, sadly. A solution that allows mass protection for these species and forests WHILE ALSO protecting these people and their way of life. Greed for too long and destruction of such forests - torn away like the rest of the continent of its minerals and resources - has left these issues to be assumingly the solution when it worsens it or makes it easier...hope we can one day figure out what to do. Because these people don't deserve to have their way of life ruined or to have their food sources taken from them
