- Unreported World is in Madagascar, where young girls accused of minor crimes are being held in prison without trial. Some are incarcerated for years without their families being told that they're there. Datshiane Navanayagam meets these forgotten girls, and tries to find out how they might get back their freedom.

@@jareau7203 No they would't. You can save everyone. But the least they could have done was pay for a lawyer for the family. A top layer would cost 1200 Pounds for 3 months service full time. Others dont need to know where it came from. All they would know is the famiky got her a lawyer and got her out.

Doctor probably not paying the girl proper wages the girl asked for her pay, doctor was not forth coming with it. Great to see the girls family and extended family supporting her, especially the males.

@@a.p.b5520 Poor people generally have less to lose by going to jail so their punishment should generally be harsher than for wealthy people or western workers for example to deter them and their fellow maybe-criminals effectively from committing (more) crimes. In this case staying years in jail for stealing is just.

That rule probably doesn't apply in Madagascar. And even if it did, their government isn't as good as ours so they might overlook it when she gets on trial. It is not Child labour to to them. It's just a child helping around a house. It's like doing chores at home, but it's not at her own home.

We found out that Saholy still is in prison in Antsirabe. She got a lawyer via Amnesty International and her case will be in court 13 june 2019. Her lawyer told us that she will be liberated soon after. We got in contact with her and her parents and help them with their busfees (6 hours single trip) and meals for Saholy in prison. Since winter is coming we also gave her blankets and warm clothes. We are happy that she will be free in short time, but it doesn't change anything for the thousands of people that are without proces in the prisons of Madagascar. So please sign the petition of Amnesty International mentioned above to ask the Malagasy Government to change this pre-trial-detention law. Thank you!

I'm pretty sure there are certain rules and ethics about helping people when you are filming a documentary. It's like that picture of the vulture and a child, where the photographer was actually not allowed to help him. The best they could really do was help their family find out, give them a lift and raise awareness online

These reporters....man. Gosh this is why I love unreported world so much. they FEEL for these people. Offer to help, but the genuine emotion they show when they see sadness just makes my heart fill. I dunno but I just rarely see this happening on 'usual' media reports or anything....

@Crystal johnson Hi Chrystal! I am from the US. I meant to say that our jails are filled typically with poorer citizens and we have a high recidivism rate. Even people with minor infractions, such as traffic tickets or small fines are starting to fill up local jails. So, it is not as bad as this...but I think we are moving on that direction unfortunately. :(
