Long ago for my African culture too, it was considered a curse. The mom would have to choose which twin to kill off, because the elders believed if you keep both of them alive then bad things would happen like parents dying young, or even bring bad luck to the family. We have since evolved and now twins are considered a double blessing.

Notice the women leave with their children but the men leave their wives and children for a safe and undisturbed life. Kind of like most cases in our countries too. The men jump ship to shell off the responsibility of a child while the women face challenges far greater than most surrounding them. It's not always the men, of course, but it overwhelmingly is in every single country. Such a shame.

Actually, I think it likely stems from the days when people were nomadic. Raising twins was very difficult then, as women could only care for one child at a time since she had to carry them every where while doing her own work. Often babies would be abandoned if they were born when the mother already had another infant because it was simply not possible to care for another child. I wonder if this is a manifestation of that.

Yeah & I'm sure the elders are all men SMH & black men at that smh. If I was that reporter I would have shouted, twins are a blessing from GOD!! All because of something that happened long ago. Nothing biblical at all... They got massacred because they went back a big group of people to a place where a massacred was happening! The story seems made up too. How can you forgot one twin while fleeing? They left without grabbing the child?? Then why take just one & not both? Fake just to push these women into giving them up so the men don't have to take on the responsibility of an abundance of children. Such a small village to produce so many twins within that community!

I remember bright red cotton dresses with full skirs paired with a black vest with shiny rickrack trim for Christmas. My mother thought that was cool. LOLOL! It's crazy because I have a twin sister and was born in canada and can only imagine whatever my mother would have had to go through if she had us in madagascar and raised us in places that currently have that taboo. I love being a twin and think I'd be so sad if either of us had to be given up or abandoned or even killed just because we were twins. It makes me feel sad that being a twin is seen as such a bad thing and that i wouldn't even be considered as a person in some places over there. I hope that these people are able to find it within their hearts to change their beliefs to stop harassing these women and children and that it changes soon.

This woman had 3 sets of healthy twins in abject poverty?! And they're all alive? They should give her a medal.
Also the tradition started during a tribal war with a tribe being massacred because they went back to save one of the twins that had been accidentally left behind. And they honor the tradition by... leaving their babies behind? What? Wouldn't the moral actually be "keep your twins close to you so don't endanger other people?"
Also, I fear for the reckoning that could be coming for these people. It would be absolutely crazy if the tribe that started this tradition was suddenly attacked by a rebel group made up entirely of twins who had been abandoned at birth and grew to hate their own people.

And how strange that the documentary woman invited an adopted mother to judge the birth mother and herself insinuates the younger birth mother does not value her child by making the comparison between them? That's like going to a middle American adopter and inviting them to judge an immigrant with a worse quality of life who knew their child would have a harsh quality of life if they stayed there (in a patriarchy where mothers have no power in this situation unless they opt to be close to homeless), had other children to care for, and was poor enough to need to be doing hard labor a week after her babies' birth. I have a distaste for her after this. And how about some respect for the topless woman doing field work? I'm sure she didn't imagine she'd be part of a "national geographic" animal, voyeuristic display or sign a nude consent form in anticipation of being internationally televised or digitized in channels next to Western women who have their body parts blurred.

I'm glad the twins have kind and caring people watching over them when they are giving up and they aren't harmed. However, I'm sure the children adopted to families outside of the community will have questions of their origin one day and seek to find answers. Maybe the taboo will be broken when they see the twins doing well or maybe not because people don't want to face their guilt.
