  • "A Silent War: Stories of Human Suffering and Resilience in Congo" is a poignant documentary that sheds light on the ongoing humanitarian crisis in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), particularly in its eastern region. Through a compelling 28-minute narrative, the film delves into the lives of individuals who have been internally displaced due to persistent intercommunal militia attacks and military operations, unraveling the profound impact of the conflict on the Congolese people.
The documentary is set in the city of Goma, where countless individuals have been compelled to abandon their homes and livelihoods. Featuring firsthand accounts from internally displaced people (IDPs), it paints a vivid picture of the once-peaceful lives they led in their hometowns. The film navigates the intricacies of the conflict, implicating various entities, including the Congolese government, the Rwandan military, and armed rebel groups like the M23.

the m23 claims to fight for the rights and wellbeing of discriminated peoples from that region of DRC, mainly kinyarwanda speaking peoples, but they say they generally fight for everyone that needs better services that the state doesn't provide there, mainly like basic security and justice, being able to walk outside without fear, schools for kids, etc..., although despite their claims, they still seem to have commited a few crimes themselves, although to a much lesser extent than most other armed groups of drc, I don't know if those crimes are part of their strategy somehow or bad apples that messed up.
As for the drc army, M23 are clearly stronger than them, they had to call in europeans mercenaries and burundians, but that still doesn't work, now they should have an SADC force, we shall see what results this give.
For international sanctions, the proofs aren't strong enough, most proof still show that most of m23 material and ressources still comes for DRC itself afterall, and that DRC itself, as their military, police and state authorities, still commit most crimes, against their own people, more so than any other armed groups, so sanctions against Rwanda would be quite hypocritical and non sensical. DRC gov doesn't even provide basic security for their displaced in camps, they refuse to. At the end of the day, the main cause of this situation being so bad is just that DRC is a failed state and failed people, so much land and ressources, more than enough to be one of the main powers of the world like the us or china or any top 10 countries, 65 years of independance and freedom of self determination, yet this is what they ultimately decided to self determine into after all those years and 4 generations of congolese, at some point their is nothing anyone can do if they themselves don't want to go forward, in the sense that to speak factually, even if rwanda has a play in this, the main issue with congo and congolese people is congolese people themselves, so much corruption and non development for so many decades, but that doesn't seem to bother anyone there and no one protests, but rwanda? now they want to talk but that's not the right hill to die on. the very fact that tiny rwanda messes with them should tell them more than enough where the real problem is, but unfortunately they are slow and blind.

Anytime I watch DRC documentary featuring the suffering of the civilian populace, I recalled the brave efforts made by Late Col. Mamadou Mustafa Ndala. This late Colonel single highhandedly took the rebels in their own game and restored order and peace tot he North Kivu Prefecture. But, what happened, Congolese Army Generals in Kinshasa got jealous and had him killed with a RPG on is truck in broad daylight. Thus reinforcing the belief that even the Congolese State, itself does not want the crises to die off. Partly because the Prefecture is rich n minerals which is exploited without state control and everybody is making money out of the misery of the people. Secondly, the UN Task Force is just there earning salaries in USD, while writing reports. And the rebels knew the UN Task Force are just "tourists". Doing nothing while civilians are butchered right before their eyes. As long as the region continues to habour the remnants of FDLR (Hutu extremists), Rwanda will always create another force to engage them and keep them at arms length, rather than use the Rwandan Army. The Congolese Government is simply not serious about bring peace to the region. It prefers to pass the buck and the UN is complicit in it.

The conflict in North Kivu, Congo, is rooted in the historical discrimination and marginalization of the Rwandaphone population, particularly the Tutsi community. The Congolese government's biased policies, which favor the Rwandphone Hutu population over the Rwandaphone Tutsi, have created deep-seated tensions and resentment. The Rwandaphone population, which in general constitutes a significant portion of the region's inhabitants(you can tell from the names of the victims interviewed even in this documentary , they reflect rwandaphone background like uwiwana, nduwayezu etc)
and the majority of this rwandaphones feel unjustly targeted and oppressed by the government. This ongoing discrimination and neglect have fueled the emergence of armed opposition groups, who are fighting for the rights and recognition of the Rwandaphone community. In contrast, the Congolese government's military, known as FARDC, is primarily concerned with securing control over mineral-rich areas and maintaining power, rather than protecting the interests of the local population. This disregard for the well-being of the Rwandaphone community further exacerbates tensions and perpetuates the cycle of violence. It is essential to address the historical context and root causes of the conflict, including the land ownership issue and the cultural and linguistic heritage of the region, in order to find a lasting solution and bring peace to the area.
Once more, let's delve into the history of the contested region(North Kivu): its original inhabitants, the roots of the Kinyarwanda place names (such as Muremure, Ngoma, Masisi, Bunyakiri, and many others), and the Congolese claim that Rwandophones do not belong in the area. The government should provide evidence to illustrate who inhabited the region from the beginning of time. People should refrain from relying solely on one perspective and instead take the time to comprehend the issue's historical context rather than viewing it solely through the lens of war.
