- Asked why Bob Dylan never shows up for the interviews, George Harrison has the perfect answer: "He's lucky".
Interview with Jeff Lynne, George Harrison, and Tom Petty promoting their second Traveling Wilburys album, Volume 3, on NBC's Today Show in the U.S. Broadcast 30th Oct 1990.
The interviewer is Rona Elliot. Rona is an American music journalist and interviewer of television, radio, and print. She was the first news anchor on music channel VH1 and music correspondent for NBC’s Today Show for ten years.

George looks so good in this interview. Don’t ever remember seeing him smile so much, have so much fun and seem so happy as he did during the many Wilbury interviews and videos.
It's probably George loving working with these great singer/songwriters and musicians. He respected them and they respected him. He didn't get respect a lot of the time from Paul or John, when he was in the Beatles.
Even in this interview he don't laughed as others peoplea would do in his situations. But you see he loves playing, and be in THIS BAND,HIS BUDDYS. Every of this characters are,is,was,be when you separate them... they greatest musicians of our time. Every one is outstanding and then they collaborated... puhhh hard to beat this formation
Sorry for my bad english
Greetz from Germany
I agree with you that he looks great in this interview. But you should watch the tribute to Carl Perkins that he organized with Dave Edmunds. I thought he was going to injure Dave with his smile it was so wide.
If there ever was a super group, this was it. Love all these guys music as a group and as individuals.
RIP Roy, Tom, and George. Live forever Jeff and Bob!
I love seeing George and Tom sharing a microphone. RIP friends.
It’s truly a collaborative effort for them … no competition… just fun …
As much as we can measure this band by its great sound, I love it because the members are together because they WANT TO HAVE FUN
Handle me with care baby, handle me with care. Hasn't aged a day, and means more to me now than ever. I miss Tom, George, and Roy. What an assembly of talent and just plain great guys. What a hang baby, what a hang !!! 🎸🎸🎸
Can you imagine getting to interview these three legends in person all at the SAME TIME?
Only Bob and Jeff are left. 😔 RIP Tom, Roy and George.
“You’re Not Alone Anymore” is My Favorite Tune by The
Traveling Wilburys (For Now)…
I think Bob is on his last legs as well. He doesn't play much guitar anymore.
@@cockoffgewgle4993 Maybe not as badly as you think. He's on tour and will be coming to my neck of the woods, Akron OH soon.
They were just brilliant together and bucket loads of talent between them all and to have someone like roy orbison in the band was just amazing his voice was like no other, he truly was the best singer in the world.
What a band! It is sad to see most of them gone now. Love the Wilburys
Greatest supergroup ever
cant understand why the guy from ELO was in it
@@skero7359 Why wouldn't he be? He was friends with George, Roy & Tom,, produced albums for them, and he was a good musician/songwriter.
@@CB-xr1eg Yeah, definitely. The least recognizable name perhaps, but massively talented, and integral to the production of the project.
@@Hexon66 Exactly, he also produced the Wilbury albums, and wrote/sang on them too. I think the least recognizable name would be the drummer who hardly gets mentioned, Jim Keltner. he wasn't officially a Wilbury but he was on the albums.
Jim Keltner was Georhe Harrisons drummer from 1973 untill he died. He was even in the Bangladesh concert in 1971 as George did not trust the heavily drinking Ringo Star. The next album had Jim Keltner playing on it or you can say he was Georges drummer since 1971 as They released an album from the concert. Jim Keltner even left on of his drum sets in The Friar Park studio as he knew he would come there all the time and it was too much work to ship it back to US. In George Harrisons 120 room castle Friar park the best studio in England was located. Many groups came there to record their music, usually living in the lodges around the castle. There were 16 houses located on the promises and the enormous castle George lived in which is the most beatiful home any rock musician has ever had with 250 000 Square meter garden. Or their was actually 7 gardens on the property. That castle snd its gardens must be worth billions of Dollars by now.
Without a doubt, George was playing with four guys that really appreciated him.
Hopefully he appreciated them more since he was third best
They appreciated his immense talent that made it easier for them
@@bill-fk7tlGeorge was the best then Roy then Dylan and Jeff are fairly even....petty is a complete nobody and it's a disgrace he is there and only ruins the songs when he sings or contributes in any way.
"She's My Baby..." What a way to kick off an album!
Talent overload, you can't replace Roy Orbison there are no replacements for any of these super musicians! Struck while the iron was hot! ❤
You even can't replace anyone of these great five musicians. Their music will never die and sounds still like done yesterday.
Struck* too.
Fantastic band. Great musicians. ♥️❤️💕💖🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶
It's funny to hear George say that part of the magic was this attitude of 'we don't really give a damn' that made it fun. Ironically, all of these guys give BIG damn. They put their best efforts into these songs. It's the weight of the music business being off their backs that makes this great music possible.
Absolutely correct! This was their life, music. They gave a damn alright and thank god they did!
I get what you're saying, but I think the point is that quality is intrinsic for the true artist. And you're right, the 'don't give a damn' is about industry or commercial expectations. In layman's terms, they love their jobs, but the work is not drudgery.
Wilburys forever! Great fun! Superb professionalism.
This is great. So nice to see George and Tom. Thanks for sharing.
Tom smirking when she brought up carousing & drinking .... so cute!
The first Album was the best, RIP ROY, George, Tom.
R.I.P............George Harrison...........Roy Orbison,,,,,,,,,,,,Tom Petty....................you are all missed............
The recording of album 1 with Roy Orbison is a good watch. All the guys looked up to Roy, couldn’t believe he was in the band…he had the biggest voice there. It must have been so sad when he passed away. And surely took the wind out of their sails for a while
Love these awesome beautiful guys♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️
They could hamonize together unbelievable great super stars
One of the best supergroups of our time.
One of the great Super Groups. Thanks for this.
I just discovered them last year, AND I'M IN L 💓 V E !
Inside out, right side up!!! This made me smile so big, nice to wake up to this Sunday morning!
Long live Jeff! Summer and Fall Tour in 2024! Get your tickets 32 concerts in North America ❤️❤️❤️
Get your tix, there is a 2024 tour
The super group that gave the words meaning.
The wilburys were just the epitome of authentic rock and roll.
I wish Bob and Jeff would do a wilbury reunion with Dhany Harrison and Roy Jr
George said that Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers were the greatest pure rock band he’s ever heard..now they’re playing ukuleles in Heaven
Why not mention their fantastic drummer, Jim Keltner? Like saying Beatles without Ringo.
Jim was never officially a Wilbury, more like a session drummer.
To be fair, who knows what NBC cut. Don't know if the guys would have mentioned him, I suspect they would have, if they'd remembered. But the name probably wouldn't have meant much to NBC execs or the Today Show's audience anyway.
I did, too! Thank you so much! Love The Wilburys...fun to watch and listen, too.
Volume 3 kicked butt."She's My Baby" will always be my #1 fave.
I spent ages looking around for Vol 2, thinking I'd missed one, then I asked the guy at the record store and he explained.😐
@@CB-xr1eg Maybe it's an inside joke even more meta than we thought. And there *_ACTUALLY ARE_* Volume 2 masters sitting in a box somewhere, only to be released after the last Wilbury passes.
Love these guys
The loss of Roy was hard..his contribution was so unreal
I like the fact that Roy Orbison would do a vocal take, the rest of the guys chins would hit the floor. Roy would say "how was that?"
"We were drinking Dos Equis, weren't we? Not buddies." Love George.
"Bud"ies. George has been so quick and subtle for decades
Best group ever.
🎶 by now you've got the gist

Very nice music! Better than the Rolling stones during their all career.
Travelling Wilburys wonderful refreshing music... Much missed. A joy to listen to. Not the synthesized, shrink wrapped audio horse dung that constitutes modern "Pop" music!!!
RIP Tom,George and Jeff
Omg what😮??
Jeff Lynne is alive and well AH!
I hate that they stuffed them on a couch so that they would be easier to tape. The answer to why Bob doesn’t show up is “…Because there isn’t enough room on this damn couch.”
I know! I wished they said that as an answer!
So you don't think that they already knew Bob wouldn't show up, and got the correct-sized couch?🙄
George harrison was a very unique soul
and a very good one at that
Only two Wilburys left.
Yep, 3 down 2 to go...✌
Enjoying Bein' Creative Together with Ur Peers & having Fun Collaborating with Them! 👍
A true Super Group made up of the very best in the business . Still sound as good today as they did in ‘88 . You can have today’s music … no match for ‘ the real stuff ‘ RIP Roy , Tom and George , nice work boys ; your music is immortal .
I'm with Homer Simpson , Jeff Lynne is my favorite Wilbury!
And so many people say George is their favorite Beatle
Wow, was it really THAT long ago? The first Wilbury's album (1988) came out a year after I graduated high school. Jeff is all alone now (2023) from this interview line-up! Seeing this (nice looking!) woman with her 80's hair & 'shoulder pads'. Seemed so boringly normal back then.
Eles eram os caras.
The TW: one of the brightest, eternal stars in the history of rock and roll.
Tom is so cool 😎❤️💔
Tom looked really great with that hat on.
@ 5:42 that looks like the same building that Steve Perry's video of "Oh Sherry" was filmed in......???? ..... looks similar anyway.....
Not sure who started it Col. Parker, Liz Taylor, or someone before them, but the idea that not giving interviews makes you more in demand and mysterious is sad. There are a few entertainers that have done almost no interviews, Dylan being one of them, which in the long run will be unfortunate for those interested in him years from now. Elvis did hardly any interviews, never appeared on Carson and such, but he has hundreds of videos of his performances. Elvis lives on strongly due to all of his recorded performances. I guess my point is... if you are a performer, record it and don't shy away from interviews... decades from now people will be interested.
I understand what you're saying, but to be honest, Dylan's 1965 San Francisco interview is all we ever need! I love Dylan, and probably have learned more about his life and loves than I ever wanted to, but I don't really care about artists doing interviews to shill product. (I'd never seen *this* until today!). And I think Dylan, specifically, has been pretty clear that he's *not* going to explain meanings of songs (and if he does you can't trust that's just not making stuff up!). The music is the legacy, and future generations will find quality. And if they don't, it's their loss for not looking hard enough.
@@Hexon66 Good point and at least there are a lot of Dylan performances that will undoubtedly stand the test of time.
WooooooooooooooW the T.W.
Só lendas, acho que só Jef line está vivo. Que pena que têm que ir embora
Wasn't Del Shannon being considered to join the group after Roy's passing? There are reports that he was being considered, but unfortunately Del ended his life too soon.
Del would have added a great rocking edge, odd really that he wasn’t offered because it’s well known that Del was Jeff’s rock n roll hero - Del quoted ( oh that’s just a rumour - nice rumour though ) 🎸 rock on Del in heaven!
Not to mention Tom Petty's shout-out to Del in "Runnin' Down A Dream".
@@hutchgott somehow he deserved so much better, another quote from Del ( not everyone is into my music but those that are tend to say fiercely loyal ) well aged 14 Runaway hit my ears and here a I am 60 years later and I’m still listening 🎸😂
Just rumours, but the guys said Roy was irreplaceable so they never looked for a replacement.
We are very lucky the Wilburys got together when they did and recorded. Now Roy, George, Tom are gone…..
Always enjoyed George Harris when he was with the Beastie Boys
Vol 2 is underrated!
Thomas Earl Petty (Gainesville, Florida; 20 de octubre de 1950−Santa Mónica, California; 2 de octubre de 2017), más conocido como Tom Petty, fue un músico, cantante, compositor, productor y multiinstrumentista estadounidense, conocido por su trabajo al frente del grupo Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers y como cofundador del supergrupo The Traveling Wilburys a finales de la década de 1980, donde tocó bajo los seudónimos de Charlie T. Yes it is, and thank the lord for that.
It's worth noticing how slick, clever and bold the white media is in attempting to link and illustrate how these 4 white artists will 'take us back to the early roots of Rock n Roll'. False.
These 4 artists certainly don't resemble the likes of Little Richard, Chuck Berry, Sister Rosetta Tharpe, Fats Domino, Bo Diddley, Ruth Brown, Louis Jordon, Ike Turner, Lloyd Price, Big Joe Turner etc....
And since that host felt the need to mention the word "roots" in her opening intro, allow us to remind everyone that american music forms: Spirituals, Blues, Ragtime, Jazz, Country, Bluegrass, Folk, ROCK N ROLL, R&B, Doo-Wop, Soul, Funk, Punk Rock, Disco, House and of course Rap and Hip Hop---all enjoy well documented African American roots coupled with undeniable African American influence.
Don't get it twisted.
Wow you're so "pure".
@@JesusVazquez-jz2qm it's not a matter of being pure. It's just that it's Black people who contributed to and continue to contribute to America's swag. Get over it.
@@skillet6870 In terms of "roots", maybe. That doesn't invalidate the "branches" and the fruits.

Put your race card back in your wallet, Skillethead !! I didn't recall anyone mentioning " going back to the white roots of early rock and roll. " I'm sure it would have made you happier if the interviewer said " and let's not forget that ALL genres of music in the history of mankind throughout all parts of the world was created by the black man." That's really what you want to hear isn't it ?
