  • 'The True History of The Traveling Wilburys' was filmed in the spring of 1988 whilst the band were recording 'Vol. 1' in Los Angeles, and includes footage shot by Nelson Wilbury.
In trying to explain how the Wilburys originally came together, George Harrison once said, “The thing about the Wilburys for me is-if we’d tried to plan it, or if anybody had said, let’s form this band and get these people in it-it would never happen, it’s impossible. It happened completely, just by magic, just by circumstance. Maybe there was a full moon that night or something like that. It was quite a magical little thing really.”
    Director: Willy Smax
Producer: Willy Smax and Olivia Harrison
    Edited by: David Kew
    Director of Photography: Nelson Wilbury

"The Wilburys is a testament to George's ability to make and keep friends"... tells it all.
They were enjoying their time together and like some people play cards... others play football or soccer.. or even "handball" they were doing what all of them loved more than anything. This is so great a "last...(ing) goodbyes or greetings" from truly great musical inspired people who got famous because of their love of music... Roy, George and Tom have now traveled over to the other side... but Bob, Jim and Jeff are still traveling on this side... in 2022.

After watching the "Get Back" doc, it's easy to see why George was so worried about his friends happiness. He didn't want his friends to feel pushed aside like he had with the Beatles, the whole mess that had become. So he became the leader to make sure everyone felt included. Everyone had a voice here and a strength in a certain area to lend that made the group work. I loved all these guys separately and to see them together is magic. I watch this docu once a year, it's so good!

I always thought of Lynne as an engineer of sound, or a craftsman really. A sculpter. A sculpter of sound. I hear the Electric Light Orchestra sound organically fused into the songs. There's the classic rock and roll and rockabilly song, or a George Harrison song or riff, or the Dylan twang. It's fresh but its the classic sound and it has this something else. An ELO presentation and energy. All the songs were so nicely put together.

This was so incredible, the man, the myth, the legend that was The Orb stole the show even in a group full of other certified geniuses. That voice, the greatest voice, no one could match it. It wasn’t a voice, it was a miracle. I got goosebumps just thinking about it. I think he struggled to accept the adulation, he said he didn’t know what to make of it but he remained humble and gracious.

The Travelling Wilburys were a final validation of Roy Orbison’s contribution to Rock&Roll from the mid 50’s of Rockabilly at Sun Records to his last recordings with Virgin released in the late 80’s and early 90’s. Jeff Lynne produced Roy’s Mystery Girl album around the same time as the Wilburys and helped ensure Roy went out on top. It had been 25 years since Roy toured with George Harrison and the Beatles in the U.K. during 1963.

@Harry. B. Renner. jr. Interesting history lesson. I didn't know that about Sam and Ooby Dooby. People needed to learn to listen to the Man in Black! I love Johnny Cash, was so sad when June died bc I knew Johnny would be fairly quick to follow.
Both he and Roy had unmistakable voices, when you heard one or the other, yep that's Roy or yep that's Johnny.
The same can be said for George, Bob, and Tom as well. To think there's only 2 Wilburys left... Love old Bob! That'll be the day the music truly dies. I'm not a huge fan of Jeff (Geoff?) and ELO is too over produced but any friend of George's is a friend of mine kinda thing right? Thanks for the insight into Roy. 🌹

Thought I'd add one for the absolutely brilliant and perfect work of Jeff Lynn- any one of them could have produced this unbelievable gold mine of mind gold, but Jeff was the only producer capable of turning those sessions into some of the finest sounds ever put on tape- I can't remember, was it the kitchen or the dining room that was the vocal/drum booth-no the kitchen was the guitar booth!
So much for the notion that you have to record In a multi-million dollar space ! It's the music thst makes the room.
      Thank you forever Jeff

@@willyrocker4746 - True, and the term 'Wilbury' appeared during the making of Cloud Nine, which also became the fundament for creating the band. Harrison referred to errors from faulty equipment, joking to Lynne: 'We'll bury 'em in the mix'. After that, they used it for any small performance error and more.

The generosity of spirit and friendship that was passed around was amazing. Growing up in the 60'sand 70s as well as beyond we have so many talents still available today. Watching them I know we took them for granted.

George certainly has a knack for pulling together the most talented and compatible people, and then have them bring out the best in each other. He did a super job putting together " The Concert for Bangladesh", on pretty short notice as I recall. But the "Traveling Wilburys" were a recording group. A super group if ever there was one. And if not for the untimely death of 'LEFTY WILBURY' in late 1988 I'm sure there would be more than just volumes 1 and 3.
One can only imagine what other tasty tunes these brothers would have created....and lets not even think about touring!

I love this. I come back to it every few months. George was my favorite Beatle when he was alive, now it is Ringo.... The talent in the Wilburys is unbeatable and can never be matched, but the true love these guys had for each other is the real heart of the group. We all wanted them to tour, but it wasn't possible with the schedules and commitments each of them had.
