  • Welcome back to part two of the Hope Pilgrimage trail in the glorious Peak District.
Steph and I begin the day at Bamford Heatherhill Farm Campsite. We pack up camp and head up the road a short distance to St. John the Baptist Church in Bamford. We collect our stamps and stickers and receive a warm welcome from the local church community.
From Bamford, we begin our steady ascent up to Stanage Edge and towards Stanage Pole. Much easier ascent compared to day one. This section is a mixture of county lanes, dirt tracks and rocky footpaths. From the pole, we find the trig and enjoy the views from Stanage Edge.
We then slowly begin to descend, over Fiddler's Elbow and onto Higgor Tor, with some incredible rock formations to enjoy. Our route takes a steep turn as we enter the valley into Hathersage's vibrant and busy village, visiting the church and Little John's resting place. We take a look around the village and stop for lunch at the Outdoors Cafe.
From Hathersage, we cross over the River Derwent, following the footpaths through rolling fields boasting amazing views over the valley and edges. There's a lot of up and down of the green pastures until we enter a peaceful woodland enjoying the shade from the trees. We soon began our final climb onto Eyam Moor and Sir William Hill. Again, this area presented amazing views and stunning scenery. Feeling rather hot and tired by this point, we got our first glimpses of Eyam in the distance, which was now all downhill. Tracing the stone-washed walls downwards, we enter Eyam and reach our final destination at the church. 30 miles over two days.... what an incredible adventure, and I loved every minute of it. I would highly recommend this trail and would do it again, possibly over three or four days and take it at a slower pace to spend more time exploring the villages and rocky outcrops.

I've been plotting that in my head, having hiked all this, but certainly not in this way. Several hikes, in fact. That was absolutely amazing, Rachel. 13.08 miles is my furthest, and I know how my feet felt after that. 10 is about it for me. You both crushed those miles. I told my wife Amanda about your analogy, and she agrees with me it's perfect. I'm in a BookFace group, and there is a guy who hiked 30 miles at 2.9mph. I just think at that speed you simply can't take in the views or enjoy it at all. I did one hike at 2.2 mph and had my head down all the way. I didn't enjoy it. 1.5 mph and a lot of breaks to take it in is my speed. The area is so beautiful. I just want to enjoy it. I felt for you with the two closed churches. Back in the day, they were always open. Sign of the times sadly. That was fantastic of Roger to open for you. I've really enjoyed this journey. Thank you so much for sharing.

Hi Christ, thanks for watching and commenting. Unfortunately two stamps missing but I'll claim them at some point. We did well to get as many as we did, especially the one in Bamford. That was potluck! I think this whole trail would be more enjoyable walked over three or four days. We did push it and felt it the next day. It's all part of the learning experience. Yes, more tortoise and less hare, that's the best way to get there! Have a great week Chris, keep bagging those Peak District trigs! xx

Cannot argue with £6 a night to camp an nice that you bumbled into a Rodger on the trail, everyone trail should have one! It looked great walking apart from the suddenly appearing fell runner and I remember us visiting that church were Little John was buried on our one and only trip to to Peak District about 12 years ago. Lovely scenery and lovely churches and 30 miles in 2 days is dam good going, cheers Alan

I'm looking round to do a mini hike with my Jack Russell. It would be about 5 miles a day with a dog friendly B&B at the end of each stage. I'd love to do a pilgrimage here in the UK:,perhaps Walsingham? I love history n nice places. I'm powered by Cocodamol +a walking stick. I do enjoy watching those lovely walks u do

Come on Roger, superb, im glad he let you in, that makes it so much more interesting! Love the border point and the pole dancing! Wonderful trig too. That jogger came out of nowhere! Yes more stamps and lovely verses. We done on the factoring up, lovely weather change, i bet the woods were refreshing! I need to get back into my double number mile walking days! Great tips. Right where is the warden, knock him up, get that Church back open! 👍
