  • OK, so I've had a spirit burner for a while and it's served me very well over the years. However, this is my first time using an official Trangia 27 cookset. I thought it was about time I upgraded my cookset and felt draw this particular product. I do have and will continue to use my other stoves, but there's something very enjoyable about cooking a proper meal on a spirit burner outdoors. In this short video, I'm making my own homemade Chunky Tattie Corned Beef Hash. Much cheaper than a camping meal bought from an outdoor retailer. Turn in and see how I fair.

    Made the same meal for 3 people when at a bike festival, I used a qecha saucepan on a trangia 25 cooked some salad potatoes first then added a bell pepper, two onions with garlic loads of spices then cubed the corned beef it’s quick easy and a perfect camping meal, if you need too add more bulk just add a little water and a packet of microwave rice. Stirr well until everything is hot and serve……

    I love the Trangia, though it distresses me you haven't eaten Corned Beef since being a kid, it's a staple of my diet (though I guess that's why I'm fat!😊)
    Before using the striker, dip the end of it in the fuel, it will ignite and you have to just dip it into the burner to light the rest of it!
    My boy and I always cook curry, it's his favorite!

    Buy the strainer lid so you don’t have to take a chopping board. Decant tins into zip lock bags. Put a magnet on the back of the simmer ring so you can lift it with the back of a fork and not burn your fingers. As far as the food sticking issues go line the pan with baking paper, also makes it easier to clean up. I also use one of the life venture titanium plates in the kit to fit over the back of the frying pan so I don’t have to clean it till I get home. The toaks titanium fits as well.
    I vote spaghetti carbonara.

    You could light the burner first and put on the windshield after lighting. That gives better access to the burner and makes it easier - at least for me. A small magnet glued to the pot handle or kept with your Victorinox makes placing the simmer ring for extingiushing easier.

    Proper camp cooking Rachel.
    So glad your enjoying the cookset, i love mine.
    In case your wondering why there is a big round hole on the side of the base; its to allow the use a gas burner which fits like the spirit burner and the pipe goes through the hole to a gas cannister. Only £16 on ebay, not made by Trangia but works great.
    As for tips on using, there is not much you can do wrong, just enjoy.

    Hi Rachel, great little video of your outdoor adventure. You might find it easier to use the snuffer to put out the flame by removing the windshield with the pot gripper first to give better access to the burner. A couple of recommended additions to your kit -1 the Trangia Multidisk which acts as a cutting board and strainer and it fits in the frying pan so you save space by not carrying a separate chopping board and 2, a copy of the Trangia outdoor cookbook. I ordered mine recently directly from the Trangia webshop. There are loads of good veg and non veg recipes inside . Their Fried vegetable Tortillas is a firm favourite of mine already. Service from the Trangia webshop is excellent and I generally receive my goods 4 days after I place my order from out here in Malaysia ! Enjoy your Trangia - I love mine .All the best and stay safe

    Hi Rachel, great to watch a fellow person from Northants. I think you would love the lo mein we cook regularly, it's based on a recipe from a youtuber called Wally Cooks Everything, you would probably have to precook the noodles and meat & maybe prepare the sauce but it's well worth a go, it's similar to chow mein but a lot saucier ( oo err missus!). Looking forward to watching more from you. Fiona & Neil

    PS: When packing away, I always put the strap on through the slots of the base before stacking any of the other parts in it. It is three million times easier than doing it at the end. (I dunno, maybe only two million).

    Looks awesome. My mate Perry made corned beef hash on his trangia but added Lebanese 7 spice. It was the best CBH I've ever eaten.
    I use bio-ethanol. It's cleaner; I don't need to add a teaspoon of water, and it smells better. It cooks slower, but if you're using a trangia you're not in a rush anyway.

    Great video! I think the stove Snuffer is meant to stay on the stove when you're using it so all you have to do is slide the shield over the top to put it out. Not sure if there's room in there to keep it open though, since I don't have one of those cook sets. Your food look good! I think I would have made it in the bigger pot so I could stir It without worrying about spilling and I could use that pan as a lid if I needed to. I don't think it makes a difference in the end result though. I think you should do a stir fry next.

  • @modestadventurers
    @modestadventurers Před 6 měsíci +1

    Sorry if this sounds like mansplaining because it’s not intended as such but the technique you used with the fire steel risks you hitting the Trangia with the striker and having to do the meths fire foot dance to put it out. Try holding the striker in one fixed position and pulling the steel towards you. I also use some of the blue cleaning cloths between each layer when I pack it to stop the rattle. The water in the Meths thing has never worked for me. I get less coking if I use bio ethanol.
    The only thing I don’t like about them is re feeding the strap back through the holes when packing away. It can be a right pain when the straps old.

    • @ramblingracheltrailtales
      @ramblingracheltrailtales  Před 6 měsíci

      Yeah I need to work on that. I don’t use the fire striker very often. I’m sure I’ll improve with practice. Not sure why I lit it with the windshield on, but a good idea to add it after litting, makes sense. Thank you ☺️

    I haven't used my slirit burner yet, I used the gas burner while camping last year. I gather that bio ethanol, from B&Q, Amazon etc burns more cleanly than meths. So it doesn't put much soot kn the underside of the pans.

      @ramblingracheltrailtales  Před 6 měsíci

      Ha, yes and no. That’s the generic answer I got from the likes of Google and chat GPT, but with a little more digging it can be traced to Britain with 14th Century cookbook recipes that resemble a corned beef hash, which predates European settlers in the Americas. However, I’d imagine the Americans who developed it into the dish it is today, were of British or Irish descent, I doubt it was a narrative American dish… but I’d love to be proved wrong 😊
