      No way. Sothoryos sounds way, way more fascinating, mysterious and awe-inspiring than Australia. Australia is just a vast, empty, open space. No great cultures, no lost civilisations, no ancient mysterious ruins, barely any forest, not even that much in the way of wildlife when you come down to it. Nothing but a few rock-paintings. Australia is basically like the world's largest car park, with nothing but a bit of graffitti, and fucking evil spiders.
      Basically, Australia is THE most boring place on Earth. It's totally unjustified to compare Sothoryos to it in any way.
      Well. Apart from the spiders.

      You have clearly no idea of how Australia is culturally very rich, or at least was, before the English laid claim on it. Have you ever heard of the Dreaming Time, have you ever at least read about it, instead of hearing stupid stereotypical news facts about it? I strongly encourage you to read or search some quality articles or books of Australia’s past and archaeology, before or after European invasion. Some of the earliest human remains ten thousands of years old were found there, and very ancient civilizations as well...

    Sothoryos is currently one of the more interesting places I've read about in the world. Recently, I've also taken an interest in far eastern Essos. That area still remains unmapped, and who knows what civilizations or even empires (or, perhaps, dragons) might be there. And I still wonder what's west of Westeros.

      Doing that allows me to avoid flaws and plotholes, or to write yourself into a corner, etc. It is simply a must for me to plan the world (vaguely) before I really start the story.

    I recommend wholeheartedly the World of Ice and Fire. The descriptions of faraway lands are utterly fascinating. It is apparent that things get more and more alien and messed up the further east you go. This somewhat resembles Europe in the 1500s when all sorts of fantastic tales were being reported from around the world, including mythical forms of man we now know are nonexistent.

  • @lys6295

    It's always important to remember that all these "facts" about places far away are written down in Books by Maesters in Oldtown, who never set foot there. George has hinted quite often, that we shouldn't take all these things at face value.

    My own hypothesis is that the First Men are from both Sothoryos, and refugees from the collapse of the Dawn Empire to the east. Then they crossed the bridge into Westeros. But House Dayne is said to have been in Westeros and Oldtown was founded before the First Men even arrived. So what's the deal here?

    • @sophiawilson8696
      @sophiawilson8696 Před 3 lety +8

      My two cents that First Men are from are from Essos they may have escape from the masters of Great Empire Of the Dawn. The Daynes and Hightowers are or were high noble class from the GEOTD. Now the difference two sets of people that Daynes and Hightowers were send to Westeros to supervise the capture the Giants. Westeros was set up to be a colony for the Empire. A great collapse happens to the empire that scatter the people from that Empire across Essos. Thousands of years pass and everyone just forget about what happens and their origins. Well the religion of Red The Woman, the priestess and the Starry Eye Wisdom Church have a some mythology what happened 5000 years ago or more. What happened?!! memories of mankind are very short or like very painful and the ancestors that experience the horror now wants to block out the horror of the past. GRRM explains that Westeros is in post magic era that they moving toward science and logic rather magic of the pass. I believe the religion of Seven have a big deal to do with it.

    I wonder if Sothoryos isnt really as bad as people say it is, as in the areas around Sothoryos and Sothoryos itself are just wildly unknown by the narrators and they are going off myths and legends when they describe them. It would seem strange for one continent to just be home to monsters and bizarre creatures and diseases when westeros and essos are pretty much parallels to medieval europe and eastern/african kingdoms. Maybe Sothoryos is a parallel to south america or parts of africa? the basilisk isles could be sort of like the Caribbean with it being a place full of pirating and strange islanders (how europeans wouldve viewed them during the time)

    All the worldbuilding surrounding Essos/Sothoryos and the areas in-between is incredible. Any section of these vast lands would make for an excellent setting for a video game (MMO, RPG, survival game, dare I say it battle royale/arena game, whatever), a book series, a TV show, a movie series, or whatever else... to the point where honestly, I feel like overall Planetos would be better if most of Westeros simply dropped into the ocean, leaving only Dorne+the Stormlands and Crownlands as an island, a few other scattered islands (incl. the Iron Islands) and then as a separate landmass, the far north beginning with a narrow strip of coastline south of the Wall.

    The Summer Islands reminds me of the Philippine Archipelago especially the three main islands Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao which mirrors Walano, Omboru, and Jhala. Originally, the Aetas/Negritos (originally from Africa then migrated over for the next hundreds of thousands of years) were the first settlers in the Philippines before the Malay race. Different Rajahs, Sultans, Datus, Lakans, Panglimas, etc. ruled over their respective lands and often fought with their neighbors much like the Summer Islanders and their Prince/Princesses. The textiles are also colorful and vibrant just like them and quite interestingly, some of them were taken captive and sold into slavery much like how the Philippines was enslaved by the Spaniards for more than 300 years.
