in that case it kinda makes some sense i guess? easy for the olds to get in and out of, slow because you know they're gonna be going like 63 in the left lane regardless, and big car to cash in on the nostalgia they have for their 1976 buick whatever the fuck. all that combined with the fact that the segment has basically evaporated at this point and it has virtually no competition and i could actually see this car being modestly successful for a while.

My thoughts exactly. Old people were mostly who bought the outgoing Avalon anyway.

  • @Fastar76
    @Fastar76 Před rokem +1668

Here is my reason for this car: Since this is to replace the Avalon which is mostly bought by older buyers who wanted a softer ride and not really care too much about power and speed. So this seem to actually make sense to me (I know my idea isn't going to be a popular one), the older buyers normally do have issues with their legs and knees, etc. My parents for example likes driving CARs, and not SUVs, but with their bad knees, it is really hard for them to get in and out of their cars, so having the Crown as a Car, but with higher seating position, it means it would be much easier for older buyers to get in and out of the vehicle. Also give it a car feel and not an SUV that many may not want to own. One thing I starting to notice more and more is that as we advance in technology and sell more high tech gadgets, it is harder and harder for old consumers to use. Many aren't good with smart phones, many aren't good with new techs in cars, etc. Even some covid tests are depending on apps. While I understand the focus is younger people, but something should still be considered for the older consumers. Just my 2 cents.

This makes perfect sense to me, older folks that want easy access but also still want a sedan. If you look at the B segment crossovers, the ones meant to appeal to 20 something's as a "beginner" car, they have been historically been bought by older people. Why? Because they are small enough to live with but tall enough to get into. Your KIA Souls, Jeep Renegades, Chevy Trax... All of those are meant, except maybe the Trax, to appeal to a youthful market and yet most of the time when you pass them I bet the occupant isn't younger than 50.

It's not weird, it's bringing back the proportions cars had back in the 50s and 60s as opposed to modern sedans. People like the comfort of sitting upright in a seat rather feeling like they are on the floor, and they like a view of the road and head room. This car is a happier balance for someone who wants a more comfortable sedan rather than an SUV.

I live in Japan. The Crown is one of the most iconic Toyota brands in terms of its history, so the SUV-like styling was a big shock to the car scene here when it was announced. But honestly, after seeing a bunch of these new Crowns on the street, I think it looks rather elegant and certainly worthy of the Crown moniker, especially on the trims where the plastic wheel arches are body-coloured and not black plastic, like the new Subaru WRX.

Does any of that even matter when stuck sitting in rush hour traffic, driving to work, taking the kids to school, soccer practice, grabbing groceries ?
I think most want decent safe performance and handling, nice quiet ride and good mpg. IMO.
Same for off road use. Id bet 80% drivers dont go off road beyond occasionally parking on a grass lot or lawn. Now thats not saying AWD is not needed, I love awd especially in snow or rain, but how many really use it to crash through desert valleys or bust a creek trail in the deep woods ?

If you're not really into cars, that's fine. But this is at least $41,000 (+dealer markup) for something unexceptional; if unexceptional modern tech and space for passengers and cargo is all you want, many other cars have these very ordinary features, so just buy a used whatever for way less. Personally if I was going to throw that sort of money down I'd want the moon on a stick.
Besides, one of the major problems with the design of this car (there are many) is that the silhouette is sporty and sleek, but the gigantic wheels and sheer bulk are definitely not; it looks like it is supposed to be fast, but it definitely isn't.

So far based on the reviews I love the Ltd trim of the Crown, what appeals to me is the seat height (easy in and out) and the overall build but for a $50K car that is supposed to be Toyota's flagship I wish they had a tendered to 3 simple items. 1. lack of HUD, 2. lack of a blind spot camera which is available even on a CRV, 3. The trunk lid should be on struts rather than a bar that you have to manually put in place to keep it open. I hope Toyota Engineers will look into these simple fixes for the next model year. FYI, the Platinum is the only model that does not come with a CVT. On the previous Avalon you could get the map in the middle to add. Also the gauge cluster is customizable. You can change the tech to digital or show the RMP gauges. Doug need to do more research on this car really.

"RMP gauges"? What the hecc are those? You mean RPM, like Tachometer? If so, why a plural version?

@Spearmint / Latios Pete's own punctuation is incorrect by placing the second set of quotation marks inside the question mark. Also, capitalizing the word tachometer wasn't necessary. I totally agree with you, but generally, I believe we should be correct if we feel we must correct others. What he did was unnecessary.

I think the high riding sedan concept will work with the crown. The issue the Volvo, Subaru counterparts had was you had to pay a premium to get it. It didn’t make sense to pay that much more when for almost the same money you could get the wagon body. With this, you don’t have to make that decision. If you want a full size Toyota, you get a full size Toyota. The only thing that may hold back crown sales is dealers tacking on ADM due to its nameplate.

In my opinion it lost a lot of the elegance of the earlier 90s models used to have by trying to make it so modern and updated. As someone whose family owns a crown majesta and as someone who sees them very often on the roads here in Bangladesh this new model would be very easy to miss because it doesn't make you say "Wow that's a Crown!" anymore. No offense to anyone who loves this new design but just giving my opinion.

11th, 12th, 13th gen Crown models are the most elegant and humble looking Crowns Toyota has ever made. It used to be very popular in Asian market.
And now , I can't even see it as a Crown. It's a weird looking, with a wide mouth face hatchback.

So basically the way it was worded to me by the other techs while I worked at Lexus was B was for active braking. You will notice it more around the city but it basically activates the regenerative braking without actually applying the brakes. The regenerative braking is the electric motor being swapped in polarity to be a generator and not a motor. This converts mechanical energy into electric energy and uses the momentum of the car to spin a generator. The car naturally does this while braking but with the B mode in use it becomes active without using the brake pedal slowing you faster and using the momentum of the car to stop it instead of the brake pads. This is particularly handy for downhill driving.

It may not become a top seller but I think it's great that Toyota is trying something different. Vehicles are becoming so boring these days, at least they're offering some interesting options.
