Good theory
Just wanna go on record that the "Toxic World" was not made out of snot but rather It was literally coated with the toxic remains of all the other life forms that went into the detoxify chamber. Those zombie creatures were toxic leftovers just like toxic rick and toxic morty. The entire tank that they were in was other people's toxins, left to die in that tank, Rick just happened to be the first one smart enough to invent a way to escape.

The canister that toxic rick and morty were put in after the detox was a container that had all the previous users of the detox machine (so it hadn't been "cleaned" for a while) showing "8 ball" had been to the same resort and used the same detoxifier

this entire idea of a toxic version of yourself was introduced by stevenson in "The strange case of doctor jekyll and mr hyde"
The episode kind of reminds me of the B-Story when Beth and Jerry went to couple counseling. They had to fight the bad versions of themselves... Beth becoming the evil monster, and Jerry becoming the insecure slug. Which means that Beth and Rick and Jerry and Morty are kind of similar.

I think when Rick said irrational attachments he meant more so an unhealthy over attachment to Morty than just a general love, because they seem to just have a normal grand father-grand child relationship after the detox.
