Why Alexis Mac Allister Might Win Liverpool The Premier League

  • With both their title rivals dropping points, Liverpool rose to the summit of the Premier League this weekend with a win over Brighton. But with their squad stretched to breaking point and repeatedly falling behind in games, it's been the emergence of one player - at both ends of the pitch - who has kept Jurgen Klopp's championship dreams alive.
Alexis Mac Allister, despite a very weird start to the season, has become Liverpool's most important player. Adam Clery looks at his season so far, and analyses exactly how far he can take them.

He was definitely decent at the 6 once he got settled (and when Endo went off for international duty), but it’s clear that he shines as an 8/10 going forward more than his role as a 6. He’s just a Swiss Army knife though, he can do it all.

MacAllister was dominating games as a no 6. During Asia cup when Endo was gone and the few games before Endo cemented his position in the lineup MacAllister was superb. The 4-1 win against Chelsea, 4-0 against Bournemouth springs to mind.
He is an insanely gifted footballer who has an immaculate understanding of the game. He aced the number 6 role and he is acing the number 8 role now. The idea that he sucked before Endo's introduction to the team is unfounded and focusing on his worst game for liverpool very early on is unfair.

Running for 90+ mins, day in day out is no mean feat. Your sharp mental acuity and thinking speed goes down the more tired you get so creativity often takes a hit. Endo has that doggedness in him, trademark of the Japanese fighting spirit, and is therefore better applied at winning the ball back, even with his very good short passing skills (which is even a better plus to his skills since he is able to get rid of the ball after winning it where he is often positioned under pressure). Him being so good defensively is also why the FBs and even CBs sometimes, make roaming runs into the opponents box so often.

In my view you are pretty wrong when you're saying that Macca sucked at 6, it just took him two games to settle there and he was excellent. Another issue is that he will be missed and better suited to play more upfront, more liberated from defensive tasks. His intelligence, calm demeanor and winner attitude closer to the rival's net it's great.
Yet Macca carrying the ball from the back was really vital in that 6 period and his ball winning assets were great too. So there is no need to invent anything to actually praise his current 8 role, that BTW in his terms, is playings in the same match for moments as a 6, others like an 8 and qhen fully attacking assuming the 10 task. In fact I'm liking too that he is willing to arrive to the little area like a flase 9 when hi finds a gap, he actually neeeds to improve his socring with such a great strike and touch.

As we were getting into the busy December period, he started to dominate in the 6 off the ball and was winning challenges and winning interceptions for the team. Then he got injured. When he came back & endo was at international duty, he started to dominate even more as a 6 and gained a lot of confidence. Now as an 8 he’s playing at a world class level. But I disagree that he was ever shocking as a 6. He wasn’t convincing for the first 5-6 games at most and even then it was only out of possession. I'll be honest. I was a bit underwhelmed with Macca coming in. Good player, great price, I thought. Nothing that gets you off your seat. I saw him as a good player and maybe a bit of an all-rounder like those that left in the summer. Might have been because Brighton, while being an attack minded side, doesn't really need all that much creativity for their football to be effective.
And while he had a stuttering start, he did improve a lot fast in the no. 6 position. So I was happy with the signing.
But man, when Endo came into the team, Macca has exploded. Liverpool being a controlling side has really brought out the best in him. He has been hands down the best midfielder in England since new year, basically, probably in all of Europe.
Not only does he have amazing creativity, his off the ball work and defensive play are also world class.
Liverpool went from the worst midfield in the league last season(Everyone was just running on empty after some amazing years together) to the best this season. Endo is amazing, Szobo is amazing, Jones is amazing, Elliott is a game changer and Macca is incredible. Even Gravenberch, who has had his ups and downs this season, has shown glimpses of the talent he possesses.

Mac Allister is the player I most worry about keeping in the future. If the new manager does not hit the ground running then I worry about the following summer transfer window, he has to be on the radar of that bloody Perez.

Saying he sucked at CDM is so unfair and just patently false. He did really well in an unfamiliar position and has just excelled in a more familiar attacking role.

We dont even need to slag off caicedo and enzo to praise macca, he looks like a veteran 30 year old controlling our midfield. 35 mil was an absolute steal

When Trent is back Mac Allister will just move over to the left side of midfield and play inside Robertson who will bomb on like Bradley is at the minute and Trent will step into midfield from the right the same way Gomez is off the left. Perfect

i dont think mac allister played a bad game yet, ive watched ever single liverpool game this season, he is just now player closer to goal, he is obviously gonna help attack more
