  • Ipswich Town have reached the Premier League for the first time in over two decades. What's more they've done so while building an incredible reputation for open, dynamic, attacking football.
    It's invited all manner of speculation of boss Kieran McKenna's future, but Adam Clery looks at his side to assess exactly why the Premier League might be in for a rude awakening when the Tractor Boys arrive next season.

    For me, an avid Town fan who watched almost every game this season; Morsy (and the combative CDM role in general) for our team was the most vital component of them all.
    He was an absolute monster last season, and this season too. And he's our captain. Having him as a ever-present protection for our backline, and holding balls up and driving forward (both of which he's amazing at) and also having the ability to play balls out from that inside defensive area; this all allows our other holding midfielder, in your example Luongo (and for much of the season) to be more creative, forward thinking and adaptable - this is also where you see them dropping in to cover other positions.

  • @Ulfcytel
    @Ulfcytel Před měsícem +25

    Re-signing or replacing Hutchinson is going to be quite important to how we do next season. Like Chaplin, he is a player who can *make things happen* . Actually, there's a few in the team who can do that, but Omari's form was just climbing rapidly in the last weeks of the season. His decisionmaking had improved massively since the early stages of the loan, finding the right balance between wanting to do too much by himself and utilising the players around him.
    The adaptability and lack of stylistic/formational rigidity I think comes from League One, where you can play all the pretty football you like, but the 10-man block has to be broken down somehow. You don't turn down any route to getting goals. McKenna's first half-season, the latter part of 2021-22, was characterised by defensive solidity, but often struggling to get the ball into the opposition net. I think he learnt from that and made chance-creation from all sources a priority. Particularly shooting from outside, or on the edge of the box.

    The biggest change to Ipswich's fortunes was the ownership. The dark days of Marcus Evans sent the club into a deep pit of depression (think Roy Keane and the four Paul's) but the new owners have invested heavily in restructuring everything within the club, and were the ones who took a chance on McKenna which turned into a genius move. Everything they did paid off so well that Ipswich still have most of their league 1 side playing first team and they absolutely demolished the championship. Prem will be the real test but McKenna isn't a fluke, and doesn't seem the type to buy an entire new team before the season starts like other clubs have tried and failed at

    • @joefair1137
      @joefair1137 Před měsícem +3

      @@joefair1137 yeah, spot on, like Paul Hurst deciding to buy a bunch of league 1&2 players to compete in the championship and wondered why Ipswich were dead last. @mrwabbit9576 Před měsícem +3

      I don't worry about McKenna. I do worry about some of the squad. Particularly at fullback and CB. The premier league just leaves so little room for error on and off the ball. It'll be a big test to stay up and I'm not sure going very attacking again is a smart option. We'll see.

      Marcus Evans did his job by saving us from administration. Perhaps he should have got out 7 or 8 years before he did. He would have seen a better return on his investment (maybe) and perhaps we wouldn't have sunk into League 1. However, the Gamechanger investment group admit they were looking at "a football club in England" and had we not been in League 1, their investment may have been made in any of the other big clubs down there at the time - Sunderland, Sheffield Wednesday, Bolton, Portsmouth, Charlton, Wigan..... Dark times for sure, but one heck of a silver lining.

    • @guitaringjarmin
      @guitaringjarmin Před měsícem

      @@rozeeboy74 that's very true. As an Ipswich supporter, I am expecting everyone to say we will go back down, just as people said that we would not be able to compete in the Championship last season.
    Not least, because that is what normally happens, but we are anything but normal.
    Last season we loser the fewest games, scored the most goals, had the same number of clean sheets as Leicester, 15, conceded the third fewest goals away from home, got the most points from a losing position, had the player with the most assists in the league, the player who won the ball back the most, the most different scorers, the most goals in the last 15 minutes, the most goals from substitutes, the best home record in the league, the second best away record, and our top scorer only scored 13 goals.
    We sold 97% of our home tickets, the 3% being away tickets not being sold, and we sold out our away allocation every game.
    We had the highest average league attendance in our history, and sold more than 60,000 shirts, having sold 50,000 in L1.
    We sold out of season tickets for next season weeks ago, and have already installed three new pitches at the training ground and a new pitch at Portman Road last summer, and will begin building world class training facilities this summer, as well as upgrading to Academy Category One Status.
    We have only lost 10 games over the last two seasons, got 194 points from 92 games, scored 193 goals and conceded 92, giving us a goal difference of plus 102.
    We also managed to be the only club int he Championship without a single red card, we had the highest running stats, we are the fittest team, and had the most shots and the most shots in target, as well as having very few penalties considering all that!
    So, yes, it is a big challenge, yes it is a bigger jump than from L1 to the Championship, but we are more than capable of staying up, and we will be adding four/five/six players, hopefully including Sarmiento continuing his loan and Hutchinson coming back from Chelsea.
    People are also overlooking g the fact that Leicester are likely to start on minus ten points, there are whispers of other clubs potentially facing financial penalties, whereas we have been praised for our transparent and strong financial position.
    We have not got to this point by accident, and the progress we make over the next two seasons will not be by accident either.

    Should you not also mention how good Kieran McKenna has been at developing players? I think I heard that 8 of the 11 starters for the Huddersfield match were division 1 players in the previous season.
    For that last game, there was a gulf in performance between Ipswich and Huddersfield. That gulf was best described by the Sky commentators as the difference between a premiership team and a division 1 team - which was effectively what was on show. Ipswich has a total team spending of about £4 million. Leicester defenders alone were valued at £80 million.
    Kieran McKenna is not only strategically brilliant, as your excellent video demonstrates, but he also excels at doing more with less (at least less on paper, although the whole team proved magnificent at being more than the apparent sum of their collective parts)

    Really good break down on the way we play.. but I’m surprised you missed out a massive part of our attack. Wes Burns wide right. He makes such a difference when we play. A proper old fashioned touch line winger, who’s ridiculously quick.

    Lovely to see Luongo’s movement explored- he’s a 6, but he’s a mezzela and a half back and an inverted wing back and I dare say he sweeps the dressing rooms at the end of every game too- there’s nothing the man can’t do.
    Unsure if he will be able to replicate this in the Premier League or if he will be exposed by lack of cover around him, but I’ll never forget the job he did this season gone by- a pleasure to watch and we were consistently worse when he was out of the side.

    Fantastic season for Ipswich since I decided to follow them from a distance as a Yorkshire schoolboy in 1971 Lovely club and given the size of the town a very proud history of punching above their weight The defence needs improvement but with that proviso and keeping the brilliant Keiron Mc Kenna a decent mid table position is well within reach The top five or six clubs in the Premier are obviously first rate but the remainder are beatable

    I do love this discourse of the "not having a playstyle" playstyle. And that spot that's just above average for direct speed and just above average for passes per play that seems to be where you find Liverpool, United, Ipswich. So none of them have a playstyle, and yet they all have the same playstyle, which is high press without the ball, and tactical flexibility with the ball. It's almost like, "high press/tactical flexibility" is a playstyle...
    It's like playing with "Balanced" tactics on FIFA, and there's this crowd that wants to see possession, or direct passes, or direct runs, because it's a clear "style of play". But anyone who knows anything about FIFA will tell you, there are situations where you could easily get goals with a quick counter, but you've told your team to do possession, so all your players come back and show for the ball when they should be running at the space.
    And there are times where you're getting pressed like mad, and you need your defenders to sit in so you can play out, but you've set it to "Fast Build Up" so your full backs run up the pitch and stand next to the wingers, leaving you completely overrun and exposed.
    Whereas if you're flexible to the situation you're facing, you're more difficult to work out and should be harder to stop from scoring.

    We'll take survival, much as this season we'd have taken consolidation. There will be changes, new faces coming in, but it will be players that KMc and Ashton will have been looking at for the last six months. We won't do a Forest and change the whole squad. It's a huge gap, hope we can bridge it.

    Hmm so basically it’s a shape shifting team. Reminds me of how SAF has setup Man Utd in the past. His past Utd sides were dominant in possession in some games but does play direct and transitional on some other games. More options to play as the game progresses. But that’s really hard to execute nowadays in the Prem League (or any top tier leagues) though, it’s like jack of all trades improvisation situation which can easily confuse current players and recruitment.

    Ipswich were a midtable club in terms of budget last year. Most of their starting 11 comes from players with 0 Pl experience, who came as either loan signings from top PL clubs or very shrewd deals from championship, league 1/2 clubs. Mckenna is a great coach and hes took his players to a level no one thought possible and achieved something magnificent, but they need some serious recruitment to survive, never mind thrive. lets hold before saying theyre perfect.
    Though i truly hope they stay up and we get to see the players there and mckenna become top class. especially excited to see how mckenna develops his style and coaching over the next few years.

The way luton did it basically, but a little more adventurous. Probably a midfielder and a centerback with prem experience then a few young signings to bed in in the front.
      Plus you need to replace key loan signings like hutchinson, hed be great if you can get him again, or maybe look for someone like amad Diallo.

He couldn't stay onside to save his life, would lose the ball in 1-1s constantly, and could barely pass let alone get a shot on target. The incredible player he has become is nothing short of miraculous and a true testament to the unbelievable quality of McKenna as a coach and manager. I have noticed McKennas team do try various techniques and waiting games to open up the opposition. They have many ways to open up the opposition and players that understand each others movement. If you could, this is how you'd have your team play I think. Takes long learning time, plus also the defensive patterns have less focus, just score goals! Its the Ipswich way. In the Premier League we will sign 6 defenders and keep an extra player back.

  • @eagle_rb_mmoomin_418
    @eagle_rb_mmoomin_418 Před měsícem

    The issue is the quality of player and specifically defender is much better in the prem. The big thing is in those clips the Champ teams are not pressing the ball but players. More teams in the prem press the ball and counter press the attacking team. Certainly interesting in that Ipswich look to have a balanced set of tactics which will help them greatly...the old plan A and plan B. Or just good old situational variety depending on the specifics of the match. You do need a heck of a midfielder/s though to make that work. Which I think is increasingly important in the Prem. Roy Ball/Dyche ball etc doesn't work so well anymore.
